The Orthomolecular News Service (OMNS) recently published “A Timeline of Vitamin Medicine” by Andrew W. Saul, PhD, on its website (www.orthomolecular.org). Dr. Saul’s timeline presents major year-by-year scientific findings regarding vitamins and their health benefits from 1935 to the present. You can learn a lot by reading it.

It’s not every day you see a synopsis of vitamin medicine spanning nearly 80 years. In fact, this information is freely available in libraries and on the Internet. But Andrew W. Saul (as in “the” Andrew W. Saul, PhD, author and editor of books and articles on orthomolecular medicine) has done everyone a huge favor by compiling this information into a handy timeline of vitamin medicine.

One thing is clear. Vitamins and vitamin medicine have a long and successful history of use for their benefits to health. It’s not for nothing Andrew Saul calls it a timeline of “vitamin medicine.” Orthomolecular medicine emphasizes the use of vitamins and other natural substances to support optimal health. Hence his title, “A Timeline of Vitamin Medicine.”

VITAMIN MEDICINE: A RECORD OF SAFETY & EFFECTIVENESS

As I noted, the vitamin medicine timeline is a history of groundbreaking findings and published medical research on vitamins. It’s great information, yet Dr. Saul compiled it for a reason. Recently, several studies have been published casting doubt on the effectiveness of multivitamins.

Most of these studies can be discredited based on the fact that the multivitamins used were of low potency and/or not ideal forms (e.g., not coenzyme vitamins). Other studies attempt to show that vitamins are dangerous.

Dr. Saul seeks to set the record straight. He writes:

“Don’t get bogged down by silly claims that multiple vitamins kill, or that antioxidants are bad for you. It is high time to take a look at the record, and review what published medical research actually has been saying for eight decades.”

Dr. Saul’s introduction may sound dramatic. But recall that routinely there are published articles, news reports, and “studies” in the media downplaying or denying the effectiveness of vitamins.

For individuals in the know, such as Andrew Saul, there must be a counterpoint to the misinformation, omission, obfuscation, and double-speak that commonly surrounds this topic. His vitamin medicine timeline puts things into perspective. The timeline underscores the reality of vitamin medicine. (You may also wish to read my earlier blog article, “Why Nutritional Supplements are Vital for Optimal Health.”)

What I like most here is that Dr. Saul tells people to “take a look and decide for yourself.” In other words, don’t blindly accept someone else’s statements as fact. Instead, look around, see the evidence that’s available, and think for yourself. Find the information that’s freely accessible and make informed decisions based upon it. That’s a formula for making educated choices regarding vitamins, “vitamin medicine,” and nutrition for health.

Dr. Saul goes on to state:

“For specific references on these subjects, just copy and paste any of the brief descriptions above into a search engine and press ‘enter.’ Doctors and reporters that say ‘they have not seen any good evidence that vitamins cure disease’ are telling you the truth: yes, they have never seen it. That’s not because it isn’t available; it’s because they have never done even this simple step.”

Search engines like Google are a great place to start. Search engines searches will yield plenty of useful results. One place they likely will take you is PubMed, the National Institutes for Health (NIH) online citation resource. PubMed claims to comprise more than 23 million citations for biomedical literature from MEDLINE, life science journals, and online books.

In order to get started, Dr. Saul suggests you “copy, paste, search” online. I presume you know how to use Google or Yahoo. But here is a direct link to PubMed, so you can get started today or even right now:

DR. ANDREW W. SAUL: CREDIBLE, ESTEEMED, PROLIFIC

We at HPDI have always been impressed by Andrew W. Saul, PhD and his works. He has published more than 180 peer-reviewed articles, and authored or co-authored 12 books. A TIMELINE OF VITAMIN MEDICINE

1935 Claus Washington Jungeblut, MD, professor of bacteriology at Columbia University, first publishes on vitamin C as prevention and treatment for polio; in the same year, Jungeblut also shows that vitamin C inactivates diphtheria toxin.
1936 Evan Shute, MD, and Wilfrid Shute, MD, demonstrate that vitamin E-rich wheat germ oil cures angina.
1937 Dr. Jungeblut demonstrates that ascorbate (vitamin C) inactivated tetanus toxin.
1939 William Kaufman, MD, PhD, successfully treats arthritis with niacinamide (vitamin B3).
1940 The Shute brothers publish that vitamin E prevents fibroids and endometriosis, and is curative for atherosclerosis.
1942 Ruth Flinn Harrell, PhD, measures the positive effect of added thiamine (B1) on learning.
1945 Vitamin E is shown to cure hemorrhages in the skin and mucous membranes, and to decrease the diabetic’s need for insulin.
1946 Vitamin E is shown to greatly improve wound healing, including skin ulcers. It is also demonstrated that vitamin E strengthens and regulates heartbeat, and is effective in cases of claudication, acute nephritis, thrombosis, cirrhosis, and phlebitis; also, William J. McCormick, MD, shows how vitamin C prevents and also cures kidney stones.
1947 Vitamin E is successfully used as therapy for gangrene, inflammation of blood vessels (Buerger’s disease), retinitis, and choroiditis; Roger J. Williams, PhD, publishes on how vitamins can be used to treat alcoholism.
1948 Frederick R. Klenner, MD, a board-certified specialist in diseases of the chest, publishes cures of 41 cases of viral pneumonia using very high doses of vitamin C.
1949 Dr. Kaufman publishes The Common Form of Joint Dysfunction.
1950 Vitamin E is shown to be an effective treatment for lupus erythematosus, varicose veins, and severe body burns.
1951 Vitamin D treatment is found to be effective against Hodgkin’s disease (a cancer of the lymphatic system) and epithelioma.
1954 Abram Hoffer, MD, PhD, and colleagues demonstrate that niacin (vitamin B3) can cure schizophrenia; the Shutes’ medical textbook Alpha Tocopherol in Cardiovascular Disease is published; and Dr. McCormick reports that cancer patients tested for vitamin C were seriously deficient, often by as much as 4,500 milligrams.
1955 Niacin is first shown to lower serum cholesterol.
1956 Mayo Clinic researcher William Parsons, MD, and colleagues confirm Hoffer’s use of niacin to lower cholesterol and prevent cardiovascular disease; Dr. Harrell demonstrates that supplementation of the pregnant and lactating mothers’ diet with vitamins increases the intelligence quotients of their offspring at three and four years of age.
1957 Dr. McCormick publishes on how vitamin C fights cardiovascular disease.
1960 Dr. Hoffer meets Bill W., cofounder of Alcoholics Anonymous, and uses niacin to eliminate Bill’s longstanding severe depression.
1963 Vitamin D is shown to prevent breast cancer.
1964 Vitamin D is found to be effective against lymph nodal reticulosarcoma (a non-Hodgkin’s lymphatic cancer).
1968 Linus Pauling, PhD, publishes the theoretical basis of high-dose nutrient therapy (orthomolecular medicine) in psychiatry in Science, and soon after defines orthomolecular medicine as “the treatment of disease by the provision of the optimum molecular environment, especially the optimum concentrations of substances normally present in the human body.”
1969 Robert F. Cathcart, MD, uses large doses of vitamin C to treat pneumonia, hepatitis, and, years later, acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS).
1970 Dr. Pauling publishes Vitamin C and the Common Cold and Dr. Williams publishes Nutrition Against Disease.
1972 Publication of The Healing Factor: “Vitamin C” Against Disease by Irwin Stone, PhD.
1973 Dr. Klenner publishes his vitamin supplement protocol to arrest and reverse multiple sclerosis. So does Dr. HT Mount, reporting on 27 years of success using thiamine.
1975 Hugh D. Riordan, MD, and colleagues successfully use large doses of intravenous vitamin C against cancer.
1976 Ewan Cameron, MD, and other physicians in Scotland show that intravenous vitamin C improved quality and length of life in terminal cancer patients
1982 In Japan, Murata, Morishige, and Yamaguchi show that vitamin C greatly prolonged the lives of terminal cancer patients.
1984 Robert F. Cathcart, MD, publishes on the vitamin C treatment of AIDS.
1986 Publication of How to Live Longer and Feel Better by Linus Pauling.
1988 Dr. Lendon H. Smith publishes Vitamin C as a Fundamental Medicine: Abstracts of Dr. Frederick R. Klenner, M.D.’s Published and Unpublished Work, now known as Clinical Guide to the Use of Vitamin C.
1990 American doctors successfully use vitamin C to treat kidney cancer, and in 1995 and 1996, other cancers.
1993 Large-scale studies show that vitamin E supplementation reduces the risk of coronary heart disease in men and women.
1995 Dr. Riordan and colleagues publish their protocol for intravenous vitamin C treatment of cancer.
2002 Vitamin E shown to improve immune functions in patients with advanced colorectal cancer, by immediately increasing T helper 1 cytokine production.
2004 Doctors in America and Puerto Rico publish more clinical cases of vitamin C successes against cancer.
2005 Research sponsored by the U.S. National Institutes of Health shows that high levels of vitamin C kill cancer cells without harming normal cells.
2006 Canadian doctors report intravenous vitamin C is successful in treating cancer.
2007 Harold D. Foster and colleagues publish a double-blind, randomized clinical trial showing that HIV-positive patients given supplemental nutrients can delay or stop their decline into AIDS.
2008 Korean doctors report that intravenous vitamin C “plays a crucial role in the suppression of proliferation of several types of cancer,” notably melanoma. And, natural vitamin E is demonstrated to substantially reduce risk of lung cancer by 61%.

2011 Each 20 micromole/liter (µmol/L) increase in plasma vitamin C is associated with a 9% reduction in death from heart failure. Also, B complex vitamins are associated with a 7 percent decrease in mortality, vitamin D with an 8 percent decrease in mortality.
2012 Vitamin C shown to prevent and treat radiation-damaged DNA.
2013 B-vitamin supplementation seen to slow the atrophy of specific brain regions that are a key component of the Alzheimer’s disease process and are associated with cognitive decline.
2014 In patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease, 2,000 IU of natural vitamin E slows the decline compared to placebo. Data from 561 patients showed that those taking vitamin E function significantly better in daily life, and required the least care. Vitamin C greatly reduces chemotherapy side effects and improves cancer patient survival.

CONCLUSIONS

Dr. Andrew Saul’s timeline of vitamin medicine underscores the fact that the use of vitamins for health and healing rests on a scientific, evidence-based foundation. This scientific background will not easily disappear just because certain people don’t like it, or don’t want to believe it.

Just the opposite, in fact. The deeper science looks at vitamins and other orthomolecular substances, the more they prove safe, reliable, and effective.

Ever heard of Dr. Benjamin S. Frank? Chances are good you haven’t. But his pioneering research on the remarkable health benefits of dietary nucleic acids (RNA, DNA, nucleotides, nucleosides) is changing the world of nutrition. In fact, it’s revolutionizing our understanding of it.

If you have heard of Dr. Frank, maybe you read his book, Dr. Frank’s No-Aging: Eat and Grow Younger. It was a New York Times bestseller in 1976.

Or maybe you saw his technical treatise, Dietary Nucleic Acid Nutrition and Therapy (1977). That was his masterpiece on the topic of dietary nucleic acids for health. (If you read it, then you’re probably a doctor, nutritionist, or health researcher.)

IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT DR. BENJAMIN S. FRANK

Four important things to know about Dr. Benjamin S. Frank:

1) He pioneers the use of dietary nucleic acids as therapeutic agents in anti-aging and degenerative diseases

2) He proves that dietary nucleic acids are safe and effective natural means to support optimal health

3) He discovers and documents many beneficial effects through his research studies

4) He creates a simple diet based on high-RNA foods he recommends for individuals who wish to gain these benefits.

Dr. Frank performed numerous research experiments using humans and animals on health effects of dietary RNA. In fact, he was among the first to report significant health benefits with a dietary approach. In this respect, he is perhaps the founder of dietary nucleic acid therapy.

Today, Dr. Frank might win a Nobel Prize in Medicine. Because what his research shows about the health effects of dietary nucleic acids is nothing short of groundbreaking.

Nobel prizes are not awarded posthumously. But if they were, he would be an ideal candidate for nomination because of the incredible potential nucleic acids hold for improving human health. However, it is important to note that despite their amazing benefits, Dr. Frank never regarded dietary nucleic acids as medicines, but as natural nutrients essential to health.

PIONEERING THERAPEUTIC APPLICATIONS OF  NUCLEIC ACIDS

Dr. Benjamin S. Frank was born in 1923 and became a physician in New York City. He was both a practicing medical doctor and a PhD molecular biologist. This fact made him uniquely qualified to study nucleic acids from both practical and theoretical perspectives. From the 1950s through the mid-1970s, Dr. Frank pioneered the use of dietary nucleic acids for therapeutic purposes in aging and degenerative diseases.

Dr. Frank was not the first to examine the effects on nucleic acids for boosting health. As Dr. Ward Dean has written, experiments with nucleic acids were performed early in the twentieth century. For example, Dr. C.S. Minot in 1908 was the first to propose that nucleic acids were vital for the cellular health of cells and essential for longevity.

In 1928, Dr. T. Brailsford Robertson in Australia presented the first experimental evidence that nucleic acids could promote longevity in a series of studies on mice. By the mid-1940s, Dr. Thomas Gardner at Hoffman-LaRoche replicated Dr. Robertson’s work with several modifications.

In the early 1970s, Dr. Max Odens performed experiments with RNA and DNA using rats that confirmed earlier work, and produced exceptional results. Other researchers (primarily in Europe) focused on using injectable organic-specific animal tissues containing nucleic acids as therapy for corresponding organs in humans.

DR. FRANK’S CONTRIBUTIONS

The contributions of Dr. Frank in many respects overshadow those of his predecessors and contemporaries in the realm of RNA research. He not only performed his research studies over the course of many years, but he also performed many of them using human subjects. It was his role as practicing physician that allowed him to see for himself the direct benefits his subjects gained from dietary nucleic acids.

Moreover, as I noted above, beyond experimenting with RNA extracts in his laboratory or confining the results of his human studies to technical works or scientific publications, Dr. Frank chose to develop concrete recommendations that anyone can follow. That is, he intentionally explores the RNA content of common foods in order to make the benefits accessible to ordinary people. He then builds the no-aging diet around foods providing the highest levels of dietary nucleic acids.

Dr. Frank acknowledges the work of earlier scientists and medical researchers who investigated nucleic acids and their role in health. Yet, he himself distinguishes his work stating:

“I aim at improving the health of the entire body rather than one organ or one disease at a time; my therapy involves both RNA and sometimes DNA; my patients take them orally, as in the diet, not by injection; and I regard nucleic acids not as medicines but as natural nutrients.” (73)

Dr. Frank’s writings often are technical and theoretical. But his focus on the practical aspects of nucleic acid therapy in Dr. Frank’s No-Aging Diet distinguish him from all previous nucleic acid researchers. This work is his accessible, highly readable guide to the dietary program he developed for his patients. As I noted previously, he fully intended his diet to be easy to follow by anyone.

It is the simplicity and practicality of Dr. Frank’s diet that makes his book compelling, as well as popular enough to be a bestseller. Not an easy feat.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF NUCLEIC ACIDS REPORTED BY DR. FRANK

Dr. Frank reports many health building, rejuvenating, and anti-aging effects of dietary nucleic acids. Direct benefits he observed include:

Super-Tasty Morning Nutritional Drinks

If I wanted to jam pack as much ZING/Nutrition/Taste into a 2–3 oz shot for work every morning…WHAT ingredients would you recommend I blend together?”

As I began thinking about his question, I realized many people could benefit from my answer. Certainly many of our customers are satisfied using HPDI’s multivitamins, Rejuvenate!™ superfoods,  and other foundational supplements to create optimal nutrition. There’s no question I’ve formulated many highly nutrient-dense antioxidant formulas, multivitamins, and superfoods.

But his question focuses on how to blend up a shot-type concoction offering highly concentrated nutrition in just a few ounces of nutritional drink. Here was a challenge about which I felt confident we could succeed. But I had no way of predicting exactly what our nutritional drink would look like. We had to build it.

My team set to work in the kitchen creating and sampling drinks that would satisfy these requirements. And that could provide answers to his question about how to pack nutrition, taste, and “zing” into highly concentrated shot-type drinks.

Fast forward to today. After much tasting and tinkering, we have created a practically “perfect” nutritional drink! Now we can our provide answers to the original question.

FORMULATING CONCENTRATED NUTRITIONAL DRINKS

I have been creating nutritional drinks in my own life for a long time. And many of my professional formulation efforts have focused on providing super nutrition. As I see it, here are the basic requirements for this type of concentrated nutritional drink:

I have formulated many excellent supplements in a capsule form that can easily be opened and put into in a nutritional drink. The base for such a drink can naturally be one of my Rejuvenate! superfoods. These superfoods truly are loaded with fantastic nutrient density. Extra zing can come from organic juices. My favorites belong to Knudsen’s brand of organic “Just” fruit juices available from natural foods stores nationwide.

A MODEL FORMULA FOR NUTRITIONAL DRINKS

  • Rejuvenate! Berries & Herbs (1 scoop or 2.5 tbsp)
  • 2 PRO-C™ capsules
  • 2 Ultimate Protector capsules
  • 1 Myo-Mag capsule
  • 1 B-Complex-50 capsule
  • 1 Immune Assist capsule
  • 1 Prescript Assist capsule
  • 2 oz of Organic Cherry/Blueberry/Raspberry/Pomeganate/Cranberry Juice
  • 1 oz of Organic Lemon Juice
  • 1/2 cup Fresh Organic Strawberries/Blueberries/Blackberries/Raspberries/etc. (Must be blended.)
  • 1–2 oz Water (Fresh Filtered or Purified)
  • 1–2 tsp Chia Seeds
  • 2–4 drops Stevia Liquid or other natural sweetener (as desired)

We prepared nutritional drinks several times according to my formula (using cherry juice, strawberries, and blackberries). The formula actually makes about six ounces. It tastes so good that all of it goes down easily. However, three ounces could be stored in a small glass container for consuming later in the day. I use a hand blender and glass mason jars to blend the nutritional drinks, but any quality blender will work.

“YAY” & “WOW” FACTORS!!

“Wow!” That was our first response to the drinks we concocted. The taste is there, and it we love it. The nutrition is there, and we feel it. The fact this drink is so nutritionally dense and delicious contribute marvelously to its fulfilling character. Fresh, live ingredients (like the raw berries and chia seeds) also contribute mightily to its overall satisfying taste and feel.

This drink is enjoyable when sipped, but it’s not too finicky to be downed as a shot. It’s versatile. “Yay!”

We often enjoy nutritional drinks chilled, although that may be especially the case as warmer temperatures approach. It’s still winter (at least sort of winter-like here in Arizona this year) and to us this drink tastes equally good at room temperature. You can probably taste some of its finer nuances when it’s unchilled. Of course, whether you chill your nutritional drink is up to you and your taste buds.

However you choose to prepare it, the basic nutritional drink formula should provide all the taste, nutrition, and “zing” you crave! We are pleased we can provide many of the basic ingredients you’ll need to create such delicious, healthy concoctions.

So “Cheers!,” “Bon appetite!,” Bottom’s Up!” or whatever phrase you like best. We love our nutritional drinks. We hope you enjoy yours!

FINAL THOUGHTS

There are many variations of the basic formula we have given for tasty morning super nutritional drinks. Don’t feel compelled to make it exactly our way. Create a variation that suits your taste, or try creating different variations. In any case, there will be high density nutrition if you include most of the basic ingredients (e.g., Rejuvenate! superfoods, Ultimate Protector™, PRO-C™, Myo-Mag, etc.).

As fast and easy as making nutritional drinks can be, you might also try preparing your drink the night before the morning you consume it. That is, just because you may not have time every morning to make the drink doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy it anyway. Just whip it up the night before and keep it in the refrigerator. The many antioxidant nutrients (e.g., provided by PRO-C™ and Ultimate Protector™) in the drink will keep it fresh, entact, and help preserve its nutritional value.

Rejuvenate!™ Berries & Herbs not only tastes amazingly good, but does not even have a lingering hint of flavor that suggests it is a “health” food. It is more like a very berry food. But it might as well be some kind of dessert or smoothie concoction because nearly everyone who tries it, likes it.

For example, I usually start the day with a green smoothie. But in the afternoon, I frequently blend up a fruit-based drink that includes Rejuvenate!™ Berries & Herbs. In this way, I not only get the benefits of variety and great flavors, but also the added health benefits that come from consuming different types of high-RNA super foods. In fact, I know that Dr. Hank Liers likes to make smoothies with all three Rejuvenate!™ superfoods so that he is simultaneously getting all of their benefits at once!

HIGHER LEVELS OF DIETARY NUCLEIC ACIDS

A little publicized fact is that Rejuvenate!™ Berries & Herbs provides the highest levels of dietary nucleic acids (RNA, DNA, nucleotides, and nucleosides) of any Rejuvenate!™ superfood. One serving (2 scoops) gives you a full 390 mg of RNA. The other two Rejuvenate!™ superfoods (original and PLUS) provide 340 mg per serving.

An additional 50 mg of dietary nucleic acids may not seem like much per serving, but those servings add up! If you take one serving daily, then in one week you will consume an additional 350 mg of dietary RNA when compared to other Rejuvenate! superfoods. That is like a free serving every week! Also consider the fact that a little dietary RNA goes a long way. That is, for example, it takes fewer servings of Rejuvenate!™ Berries & Herbs to provide the amount of RNA found in more servings of other Rejuvenate!™ formulas. This can mean that a container of this formula can last longer, or at least give more therapeutic value (in terms of RNA) per serving.

Generally speaking, the more RNA the better. That is, while even relatively small amounts of RNA (e.g., 100 mg daily) can provide noticeable health benefits, larger amounts provide significantly more benefits and create a more powerful foundation for health (Frank 117). Just for example, people who can benefit from larger amounts of RNA include athletes, individuals experiencing greater stress (oxidative and otherwise), and those who seek to heal or recover from injury or physical trauma.

What is an ideal amount of RNA to consume? As I said, more is generally better. Dr. Benjamin S. Frank and other experts suggest an optimal intake in the range of 1,000–1,500 mg. This means 2.5 to 4 servings per day, or five to eight small scoops of Rejuvenate!™ Berries & Herbs. This amount can reasonably be attained daily. A morning smoothie that includes three scoops of Rejuvenate!™ Berries & Herbs, and an afternoon protein shake also containing three scoops of Berries & Herbs is all you need to gain maximum benefits.

After reaching a daily intake of about 1,500 mg, the benefits obtained by increased RNA consumption start leveling out. Additional intake of nucleic acids beyond this amount provides fewer benefits. Certainly an Olympic athlete in training might benefit from a daily RNA intake of 2,500 or 3,000 mg. Yet, most of us don’t have such high requirements because we aren’t pushing our bodies to such an elevated level of activity and intensity, or need for recovery.

But that doesn’t mean you can’t gain similar benefits as those that might be conferred to an Olympian by optimizing your daily intake at a level that gives you sufficient dietary nucleic acids for tangible rejuvenation, as well as greater energy levels and increased vitality. Start with a serving or two per day, and gradually work your way up to 1,000–1,500 mg daily.

Another fact is that it takes the body a few weeks to fully assimilate and become saturated with nucleic acids. This is why it can initially take two to four weeks after starting a high-RNA diet to gain all the benefits of nucleic acids (even though you may notice immediate benefits like greater energy). Conversely, after you stop taking nucleic acids, it takes many weeks and even up to a month to lose the benefits they confer.

What this means is that by regularly consuming Rejuvenate! Berries & Herbs, which provides you with high levels of dietary RNA, you saturate your body with them quite rapidly. Once your body is “filled” with RNA, you can go days or even weeks without it, and yet still retain most of the benefits.

Of course, maintaining a high daily intake of dietary RNA is best for health. But it’s nice to know that benefits gained by regular consumption of Rejuvenate!™ Berries & Herbs (and other high-RNA superfoods) don’t stop just because you take a break from them.

SLOWER RATES OF DETOXIFICATION

Detoxification is one of the major benefits afforded by Rejuvenate!™ superfoods and the dietary RNA it provides. It is also a major reason I like Rejuvenate!™ original greens, which is about 60% chlorella. Chlorella helps speed detoxification. The cell wall of chlorella latches onto heavy metals, pesticides, and harmful chemicals and literally pulls them from the body.

So, the greens in Rejuvenate!™ original and Rejuvenate!™ PLUS support high rates of detoxification. That is good, right? Yes and no. There is no doubt that the greens (e.g., chlorella and spirulina) support processes of detoxification and work with dietary RNA to help rid the body of toxins.

However, greens can detoxify the body too quickly. This can result in a situation where toxins are released into the bloodstream faster than the body can eliminate them without detox reactions. Detoxification reactions are not necessarily bad things. In fact, they usually are a very good sign the body is eliminating toxins, including heavy metals, PCBs, and other unwanted poisons formerly sequestered in fatty tissues and organs.

Detox reactions often show up in the form of skin rashes. Other symptoms include headache, fatigue, and even flu-like symptoms. In most cases, these symptoms are simply the result of a sudden release of toxins and will disappear within a few days or weeks. Yet, not everyone is willing to put up with detox reactions like skin rashes or fatigue for long. Nor does everyone have the time to take to allow to happen and to see how long it takes to completely detoxify.

This is especially the case for people whose bodies hold extremely high levels of toxins. Individuals holding high levels of toxins include those who have been exposed to chemicals and other toxins either through their jobs, at home, or through various environmental exposures. For example, house painters, laboratory workers, pesticide/herbicide applicators, or former soldiers exposed to various chemical agents.

Nevertheless, given the toxicity of the air, water, soil, etc. in our modern industrial society, an individual need not work directly with chemicals or live near a Superfund site in order to exhibit high levels of toxins. Toxins are found everywhere from house dust to unfiltered water to lead paint in older homes. The fact is most of us have toxins in our bodies and would benefit from regular, periodic detoxifying and cleansing. (For more information on cleansing, see my earlier article “Liver Cleanse with Juices and Herbs.”)

When I first began taking Rejuvenate!™ original, I developed small rashes on my wrists and the back of my hands. Because I knew this was a detoxification reaction, I simply pushed through it knowing the rashes would disappear if I gave my body time to eliminate the toxins being released and removed due to ingredients in Rejuvenate!™ My rashes lasted about two weeks.

I have witnessed similar reactions in friends, family members, and coworkers who take chlorella or Rejuvenate!™ (original). In most cases, detoxification symptoms usually last from a couple days to a few weeks, and then disappear. I have seen or heard about rashes, skin eruptions, fatigue, and cold or flu-like symptoms.

Such detoxification reactions can usually be tolerated even if somewhat uncomfortably. However, they should be monitored carefully. If detoxification proceeds too quickly, then it may be necessary to reduce the amount of Rejuvenate!™ for example, or stop it altogether for a while depending on the severity of reactions. Also, what may be tolerable to one person may not be tolerable to another. Some people just won’t live with a rash. Not even for a few days.

A huge advantage of Rejuvenate!™ Berries & Herbs is that it allows for slower detoxification. Because it does not contain greens, the formula leads to detoxification at lower rates. Therefore there is little opportunity for sudden releases of toxins that can cause symptoms like rashes, fatigue, or more debilitating ones. Detox is kinder and gentler. In this respect, Rejuvenate!™ Berries & Herbs is similar to Rejuvenate!™ PLUS, which is HPDI’s light green superfood.

Our PLUS formula still contains greens, but the levels are lower, and thus detoxification slows. Berries & Herbs is therefore our superfood that users are least likely to experience problematic detoxification symptoms.

Don’t get me wrong. Rejuvenate!™ Berries & Herbs supports detoxification processes. Dietary nucleic acids and certain herbs ensure it does. As I’ve discussed in previous articles (including last month’s article), nucleic acids increase the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) in the body. ATP is the key “energy” molecule that powers cells and ultimately gives you the energy you need to thrive.

Increased ATP production means more energy for cells to carry out all their normal biological functions. It means greater cellular energy to do what cells do. And one of the most important jobs of cells is to eliminate waste matter in the body, and to support detoxification in all ways from the cellular level to the level of organs (e.g., liver, kidney).

In sum, high levels of dietary nucleic acids provide for greater energy production, and allow for optimal bodily functioning, including processes of detoxification. Another advantage of coenzyme vitamins is that the body needs less of any given coenzyme vitamin because it does not need to convert non-coenzyme vitamins into forms it can use. Consequently the body requires less of a coenzyme vitamin. This is a good thing because it does not cause the body to waste energy using enzymes to convert synthetic vitamins into their coenzyme forms.

So, we pay a bit more to source coenzyme vitamins, but their value in terms of your health and well being will more than compensate for it. Dr. Frank often specifies additional vitamins for dealing with certain conditions. For example, in his chapter on how his no-aging diet can help with osteoarthritis, he recommends his patients take an additional 250 mg of pantothenic acid (vitamin B5) and 500 mg of vitamin C.

In various places in his writings, and in his general dietary recommendations, Dr. Frank not only recommends B-complex vitamins, but also vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin D. He also incorporated a wide range of minerals in his formulas for patients. These minerals included magnesium, zinc, potassium, and many others. He also mentions other nutrients, such as coenzyme Q (ubiquinone/ubiquinol), enzymes, amino acids (e.g., carnosine, glutathione), and natural sugars (e.g., ribose and deoxyribose).

Because even when the best superfoods in the world are compared to Rejuvenate!™ Berries & Herbs, most inevitably fall short. That doesn’t mean you should stop taking Rejuvenate! (original greens), chlorella, or other green superfoods. Which brings us to another benefit. High antioxidant values. Rejuvenate!™ Berries & Herbs certainly falls into a class by itself when it comes to providing antioxidant power. That is, in its power to quench free radicals.

One measure of the antioxidant values of foods, superfoods, and nutrients is ORAC value. ORAC stands for “oxygen radical absorbance capacity.” An ORAC test measures antioxidant capacities in vitro (test tube). It turns out that ORAC by itself is not the only or necessarily the best measure of antioxidant value because the oxygen radicals are not the only oxidants. A more comprehensive test would be the ORAC5.0 test, which measures the free-radical quenching powers of a sample against five different types of oxidants.

Nevertheless, ORAC remains e a useful guide to the oxidant quenching powers of a superfood. Rejuvenate!™ Berries & Herbs provides an ORAC value of greater than 14,270 units per 38.9 gram serving. There exist very few individual foods, for example, that exhibit an ORAC value anywhere close to this figure. Even the highest-ORAC foods (e.g., prunes or wild blueberries) fall far short being at most one-third as effective. Most individual berries provide ORAC values in the range of 5,000–7,000 units per 100 gram serving (usually one cup or eight ounces), which translates into about 50–70 ORAC units per  gram. Berries & Herbs dwarfs these figures by providing 367 ORAC units per gram.

This means the ORAC value provided by Rejuvenate!™ Berries & Herbs in a single two-scoop serving (about 5 tablespoons) equals the ORAC the average high-ORAC berry (about 60 ORAC units/gram) provides in about six one-cup servings (48 tablespoons). Thus, serving-for-serving, Berries & Herbs is greater than six times more potent as an antioxidant substance than most foods considered high-ORAC. It also means you’ll need to consume far less Berries & Herbs to gain the antioxidant benefits you would from a much larger quantity of high-ORAC foods.

To recap, Rejuvenate!™ Berries & Herbs offers 367 ORAC units per gram! One serving is about 39 grams, so there is a huge amount of free-radical quenching power in just a single serving. How huge? I wrote about about powerful antioxidant nutrients in Rejuvenate!™ Berries & Herbs when discussing the cell-protecting herb and nutrient blend. Yet, the major free-radical quenching power Berries & Herbs actually lies in its berry and polyphenol content.

That’s not really a mystery. The extraordinary free radical-quenching capacities of Rejuvenate!™ Berries & Herbs relate directly to the fact that berries, as well as plant-based polyphenols (e.g., those found in grapes and grape extract) contain relatively large quantities of antioxidants.

NRF2 ACTIVATORS

ORGANIC FREEZE-DRIED BERRY COMPLEX (6,000 mg)

The freeze-dried berry complex in REJUVENATE!™ BERRIES & HERBS is a proprietary blend of organic strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and cranberries. Berries contain many powerful phytochemicals that can improve health. They are high in fiber and relatively low in sugar, and will not lead to surges to insulin when eaten in moderation.

BLUEBERRIES

The berries of the blueberry plant (Vaccinium angustfolium) exhibit among the highest levels of antioxidant activity of all fruits and vegetables. In particular, they contain the polyphenol anthocyanin (a pigment that gives fruits their red, purple and dark blue colors). Anthocyanins are powerful flavonoid antioxidants that help protect the body from free radical damage and diseases associated with aging. Blueberries contain not only 25-30 different types of anthocyanins, but also chlorogenic acid (believed to be a tumor inhibitor), and the pigment cyanidin (an anti-inflammatory). Blueberries contain silicon (an element believed to be helpful for the pancreas) and are considered to be helpful for diabetes.

Blueberries also have been effective for many health conditions, and may protect the body against age related declines in neural and cognitive functions, short-term memory loss, macular degeneration of the retina, and urinary tract infections (due to compounds that inhibit the adherence of bacteria to uroepithelial walls). Moreover, there is evidence that blueberries may improve glucose metabolism via the action of chlorogenic acid, serve as a powerful anti-inflammatory agents (useful against arthritis and other inflammatory conditions), and reduce the risk of tumorigenesis.

The antioxidant power of foods is measured in ORAC units (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity), which indicate the total amount of a food’s antioxidant capacity. High ORAC values indicate greater antioxidant capacity. High-ORAC foods may therefore protect cells from oxidative damage. Two studies have shown that eating high-ORAC fruits and vegetables (or doubling the intake of fruits and vegetables) elevates the antioxidant capacity of the blood 13-25% (see Jrnl of Clinical Nutrition 68: 1081-87). When ORAC values for 40 fruits and vegetables were measured by the USDA’s Agricultural Research Service at its Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging (HNRCA) at Tufts University, fresh blueberries scored the near the top, having 2,400 ORAC units per 100 grams (3.5 ounces). Serum levels of anthocyanins found in blueberries have been shown to rise significantly after ingestion of freeze-dried blueberry powder and correlate with an increase in serum antioxidant capacity as measured in ORAC units (Mazza et al., Jrnl of Agricultural and Food Chemistry 50 (26): 7731-37; 2002)

CRANBERRIES

Cranberries (Vaccinium macrocarpon) are native to the boggy regions of temperate and subalpine North America and Europe. Although Native Americans used them extensively, they were first cultivated in the U.S. in the early 19th century. Cranberries grow on viney plants belonging to the heath family Ericaceae that also includes blueberries, bilberries, huckleberries, and bearberries (Arctostaphylos uva ursi). Cranberries contain tannins, fiber, anthocyanins (and other flavonoids), and Vitamin C. Their tannins prevent bacteria from attaching to cells. Consequently, cranberries have been used against infections, including urinary tract infections. In addition, cranberries may be helpful in protecting against heart disease and stroke. Cranberries are an especially good source of antioxidant polyphenols. In animal studies, the polyphenols in cranberries have been found to decrease levels of total cholesterol and so-called “bad” cholesterol. Cranberries may also inhibit the growth of tumors in human breast tissue and lower the risk of both stomach ulcers and gum disease. 

RASPBERRIES

Raspberries (and blackberries) belong to the rose family (Rosaceae). The red raspberry was first cultivated in Europe about 400 years ago. There are several varieties native to North America, including a black raspberry native to southern states (that has been crossed with European varieties) and a red raspberry (Rubus idaeus) from which originate most commercially grown varieties.

Raspberries contain anthocyanins, fiber (including the cholesterol lowering soluble form pectin), phytochemicals (ellagic acid, coumaric acid, ferulic acid), calcium, and vitamins A, C, and E. Ellagic acid is known to be antiviral, antibacterial, anticarcinogenic, and antimutagenic. It has been shown to inhibit the mutation of cells and to prevent the binding of carcinogens to DNA. Raspberries have 1,220 ORAC units per 100 grams (3.5 ounces), among the highest of the forty fruits and vegetables tested by the USDA.  

STRAWBERRIES

Strawberries long have grown wild in the world’s temperate regions. They have been cultivated for several thousand years and were prized among the ancient Romans. Most of the common varieties of strawberry derive from a hybrid (Frangaria x ananassa). Strawberries have an ORAC value of 1,540, which is very high among the fruits and vegetables tested by the USDA. They are a good source of vitamins C, K, B2, B5, B6, and folate. They also contain appreciable amounts of the minerals manganese, iodine, and potassium, as well as dietary fiber. Like other berries, the antioxidants contained in strawberries may be useful against diseases of the heart and arteries by preventing the oxidation of lipids. The phytonutrient phenols most abundant in strawberries are anthocyanins and ellagitannins. The anthocyanins help to prevent oxidative damage from free radicals in body. The unique phenol profile of the strawberry enables it not only to protect the heart, but also to fight inflammation. Studies have shown that strawberries also protect the brain from oxidative stress and may therefore reduce age-related cognitive decline in brain function.

ORGANIC ASTRAGALUS POWDER (200 mg)

Astragalus is derived from the root of a plant (Astragalus membranaceus) in the pea family. It is an adaptogen, meaning it has a balancing effect on bodily functions. Astragalus is often used to strengthen or tone the body’s overall vitality, improve digestion, and support the spleen. Studies confirm it contains biologically active compounds, including a polysaccharide that stimulates the immune system.

ORGANIC BURDOCK ROOT (200 mg per serving)

Burdock root is one of the foremost cleansing herbs, providing nourishing support for the blood, the liver, and the natural defense system. It is rich in Vitamins B1, B6, B12, and E, plus manganese, copper, iron, zinc, sulfur, and more. Burdock Root is often found in tonic formulas and special blends designed for internal cleansing. In traditional herbal texts, Burdock Root is described as a “blood purifier” or “alterative” and was believed to clear the bloodstream of toxins. Turmeric, a polyphenol, contains substances called curcuminoids that are powerful antioxidants, pain relievers, and anti-inflammatories. Curcuminoids have been shown to exhibit antibacterial activity.

k-RUTIN™ (100 mg per serving)

Rutin (quercetin-3-rutinoside) is a glycoside of the flavonoid quercetin. The chemical structure of rutin and quercetin consequently are very similar. Indeed, both rutin and quercetin are used in many countries as medications for blood vessel protection, and both are found as ingredients in numerous nutritional supplement preparations and herbal remedies. k-Rutin™ is an alkalinized form of rutin having greater solubility than the rutin included in traditional nutritional supplements. That is, based on laboratory studies, it is a more soluble anthocyanin moiety (functional group) than rutin.

Rutin is a flavonoid (or bioflavonoid) within a class of flavonoids that includes hesperidin, quercetin, eriodictyl, and citron. Rutin is essential for the absorption of Vitamin C. While rutin in nature is found in many nutritious foods (e.g., citrus, red apples, teas, broccoli, onions), it is easily taken in supplement form. This is especially important because the body cannot produce flavonoids. They must be supplied through diet (and it is prudent to take them in supplemental form in order to maximize health). Flavonoids boost the effectiveness of Vitamin C, improve eye health, strengthen capillaries, reduce cholesterol, improve blood circulation, and act as antioxidants. Licorice is a moist, soothing herb that is anti-inflammatory and expectorant, controls coughing and has hormonal and laxative effects. Selenium is a trace mineral required in the body. Its primary function is carried out in the form of selenomethionine, which is incorporated into four active sites of the enzyme glutathione peroxidase. This enzyme protects the body against free-radical damage (especially when it occurs in cell membranes) caused by the oxidation of unsaturated fatty acids. Selenium historically has been linked to Vitamin E because Vitamin E blocks the production of oxidized fatty acids in cell membranes. Selenium also appears to exert antioxidant activity by itself. Selenium is involved in the production and utilization of thyroid hormone, and it is antagonistic to heavy metals, including lead, mercury, aluminum, and cadmium. According to a publication of the National Research Council (NRC), “One could reasonably suppose that selenium is involved [e.g., exerts a protective function] in such human medical problems as cataracts, diseases of the liver, cardiovascular or muscular diseases, and the aging process.” Selenium in its vital role in glutathione peroxidase affects all components of the immune system, including the development and function of all white blood cells.

HIGH PROTEIN GARDEN SPROUT BLEND (3,000 MG PER SERVING)

BROWN RICE PROTEIN (NON-GMO) (9,000 MG PER SERVING)

The rice protein in Rejuvenate!™ Berries & Herbs is extracted using a proprietary enzyme process starting from non-genetically modified rice. Our rice protein is processed without the use of acids, bases or other chemicals. In addition, the protein content of the extracted product is over 70%. That is substantially higher than other extraction methods (less than 53%) that leave a much higher percentage of carbohydrate in the end product. The protein of brown rice contains all of the essential amino acids, but it is somewhat low in the amino acid lysine. For this reason we have added supplemental lysine (400 mg/serving) to the formula.

FLAXSEED POWDER (3,000 MG PER SERVING)

Flax seeds (Linum usitatissimum L.) contain essential fatty acids (an excellent vegetarian source of omega-3 alpha-linolenic acid), protein, soluble fiber, insoluble fiber, antioxidant lignans, minerals, and vitamins. Lignans are a phytoestrogens considered to be antioxidants. Flax seeds contain among the highest levels of lignans among all plant foods.

While flax seeds are an excellent nutritional food. However, whole flax seeds can be difficult to digest and its nutrients typically are poorly absorbed. Flax seeds contain natural enzyme inhibitors that prevent digestion. This natural protective mechanism means that a seed may be eaten, pass through the body, and still grow into a plant (i.e., completely surviving the digestive process!). Milling or grinding the seeds does not decrease natural enzyme inhibitors that reduce the bioavailability of flax. Only sprouting decreases natural inhibitors that otherwise will prevent complete digestion, absorption, and assimilation of flax seeds.

Flaxseed Powder provides an ideal solution to maximize health benefits of flax seeds. The process ofgermination fundamentally changes nutrient composition of the seed. Nutrients including enzymes, amino acids, and vitamins substantially increase and become more bioavailable. This allows for better availability and absorption of these nutrients in the body. For example, sprouting flaxseed doubles antioxidant (ORAC) value. In addition, “anti-nutrients” such as phytic acid, enzyme inhibitors, and insoluble fibers all decrease. The Flaxseed Powder in Rejuvenate!™ Berries & Herbs contain oil amounts varying between 38–45%, with the oil offering a high percentage (47–53%) of the omega-3 alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) and 15–18% omega-6 linoleic acid. Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) is an essential fatty acid acting in the human body as a substratum for the transformation into EPA and DHA through the action of desaturation and elongation enzymes. The seeds also contain some omega-6 essential fatty acids and exhibit a favorable omega-3 to omega-6 ratio of 3:1. Modern diets contain too few omega-3 fatty acids.

Flaxseed Powder possess 15–30% protein (typically 20%) and the amino acids of flax protein have no limiting factors in the adult diet (i.e., they are a complete protein source having all of the essential amino acids in an appropriate balance). Flax seeds are also a source of magnesium, calcium, potassium, phosphorus, zinc, and copper. They also have demonstrated antioxidant activity. The most important antioxidants they provide are phytoestrogens known as lignans.

The human body easily digests flax seeds. The seed’s outer layer is rich in mucilloid soluble fiber (flax seed possesses 10–15% soluble fiber) and absorbs at least four times its weight in water. When mixed with water or stomach juices, the seeds form a gel that creates a physical barrier between the carbohydrates and the digestive enzymes that break them down. We have added the following vitamins to the formula: Vitamin C (250 mg), Vitamin E as d-alpha tocopheryl succinate (90 IU) and high gamma mixed tocopherols (25 mg), Vitamin D3 (1,000 IU), Vitamin K1 (0.5 mg), inositol (100 mg), choline (50 mg), calcium pantothenate (30 mg), niacinamide (60 mg), pantethine (13 mg), pyridoxal-5′-phosphate (10 mg), thiamin diphosphate (7.5 mg), riboflavin-5′-phosphate (6.8 mg), calcium folinate (1 mg), biotin (0.9 mg), and methylcobalamin (0.2 mg).

While coenzyme vitamins usually cost significantly more than the synthesized vitamins (up to 50 times more), they remain quite affordable because they are only required by the body in very small amounts. That is, the body only needs small amounts because there are no in vivo losses related to any conversion processes. We therefore include coenzyme form vitamins inRejuvenate!™ Berries & Herbs in quantities helpful to the body.

The inclusion of coenyzme forms of vitamins significantly contributes to making our supplement formulas more effective than if we used conventional (i.e., non-coenzyme form) vitamins. Moreover, it increases effectiveness without substantially raising our costs. Thus, the benefits considerably outweigh the costs, especially for individuals who consume our formulas, thereby reaping the benefits coenzyme vitamins offer for human health and well being.

ENZYMES TO ENHANCE NUTRIENT UTILIZATION

The complexity and significant amounts of proteins and peptides found in Rejuvenate!™ Berries & Herbs requires the combination of multiple proteases to optimize digestion. Proteins are made up of over twenty different amino acids, with each combination presenting different characteristics. Each of the proteolytic enzymes in Rejuvenate!™ Berries & Herbs offers different abilities to break the chemical bonds found in the proteins. However, the combination of enyzmes shows the greatest rate of hydrolysis.

Peptidase breaks amino acids off the ends of the peptide chain. Our proprietary enzyme complex contains both amino-peptidase and carboxy-peptidase activities, and therefore it can remove amino acids from both ends of the peptide chain. Protease 4.5 breaks bonds at points within the peptide chain dependent upon their bond specificities. Significant action of this enzyme has been seen both in the laboratory and in digestive product usage. Protease 4.5 has an optimal pH of 4.5 (pH range 2.0 to 6.0). Protease 6.0 has an optimal pH of 6.0 (pH range 4.0 to 11.0). Together these proteases provide proteolytic action throughout the human digestive system.

Because Rejuvenate!™ Berries & Herbs contains a large amount of plant-based ingredients, we have added the enzyme cellulase to the formula. Cellulase offers distinct advantages for individuals consuming large amounts of vegetable matter. This enzyme hydrolyzes the bonds in various fibers. Cellulase hydrolyzes glucose-glucose bonds in cellulose. By disrupting the structure of the fiber matrices that envelop most of the nutrients in plants, cellulase increases the nutritional value of fruits and vegetables.

CHLORELLA GROWTH FACTOR (CGF) (200 MG PER SERVING)

In the early 1950s, the Japanese researcher Fujimaki separated a previously undiscovered substance from a hot-water extract of chlorella that is now known as “Chlorella Growth Factor” (CGF). CGF is a nucleotide-peptide complex comprised mostly of nucleic acid derivatives. The sugars identified in the nucleotide include glucose, mannose, rhamnose, arabinose, galactose, and xylose. Amino acids found in the peptide include glutamine, alanine, serine, glycine, proline, asparagine, threonine, lysine, cysteine, tyrosine, and leucine.

It is known that CGF is produced during intense photosynthesis and enables chlorella to grow extremely rapidly. During this process, a single cell may multiply into four daughter cells as rapidly as every 20 hours. CGF not only promotes this rate of reproduction, but also is itself rapidly increased.

In Japan, Dr. Yoshiro Takechi showed that CGF stimulates lactobaccilus (the “good” bacteria) to grow at four times the usual rate. Experiments with microorganisms, young animals, and children have demonstrated that CGF promotes faster than normal growth. In adults and mature organisms, CGF appears to enhance the functions of nucleic acids at the cellular level that relate to the production of proteins, enzymes, and energy, as well as to stimulate tissue repair and offer protection against toxic substances at the cellular level.

D-RIBOSE (2,000 MG PER SERVING)

D-Ribose (or ribose) is a sweet, crystalline, water-soluble powder. It is a naturally occurring 5-carbon sugar found in all living cells. Ribose is a component of RNA and therefore essential for living creatures. It is also a component of ATP, NADH, and other metabolism-related substances. The biological importance of ribose relates to the fact that it is the rate-limiting compound that regulates the activity of the purine nucleotide pathway of adenine nucleotide metabolism. As such, ribose plays a central role in the synthesis of ATP, coenzyme-A, flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD), nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD), DNA, RNA, and other important cellular constituents. Ribose is the only known compound the body can use for performing this critical metabolic function. Specifically, ribose administration bypasses the slow and rate-limited pentose phosphate pathway to stimulate adenine nucleotide synthesis and salvage in vivo. In addition, it has been shown that de novo adenine nucleotide synthesis in skeletal muscle is rate limited by the availability of ribose.

D-ribose is commonly found in foods, especially foods high in RNA (ribonucleic acid), such as brewer’s yeast. D-ribose is essential for life and can be made by the body (e.g., from glucose). However, d-ribose from food sources can significantly boost the amount of ribose available to the body, thereby enhancing processes that utilize it.

Ribose derivatives play a significant role in the body. Important ribose derivatives encompass those having phosphate groups attached at the 5 position, including mono-, di-, and triphosphate forms, and 3-5 cyclic monophosphates. Diphosphate dimers, known as coenzymes, form an essential class of compounds with ribose. When such purine and pyrimidine derivatives are coupled with ribose, they are known as nucleosides(bases attached to ribose). Phosphorylated nucleosides are known as nucleotides. When adenine (a purine derivative) is coupled to ribose it is known as adenosine. ATP is the 5′-triphosphate derivative of adenosine. (The adenine portion of ATP consists of ribose and adenine. The triphosphate portion of ATP consists of three phosphate molecules.)

Ribose therefore is found in many important biological molecules, including adenosine triphosphate (ATP), nucleotides and nucleotide enzymes, and in RNA. D-ribose (as ribonucleoside diphosphates) notably converts to deoxyribonucleoside diphosphates, precursor molecules for DNA.

Ribose generates adenosine triphosphate (ATP) in the body. Supplemental ribose increases the rate at which ATP is generated, thereby improving exercise performance and enabling faster muscle growth. This is possible because supplemental ribose enables the body to bypass the conversion steps needed to create or re-create the adenosine nucleotide. Replacing adenine nucleotides normally takes time for the body to accomplish, and this process can reduce the rate of healing and repair (e.g., of muscle fibers). Basically, supplemental ribose can increase the speed at which adenosine nucleotides can be replaced by providing raw material for the creation of more ATP.

Ribose similarly has been shown to boost synthesis and salvage of other nucleotides in the body, including those found in heart and skeletal muscle. Supplemental ribose again bypasses the rate-limiting conversion processes (i.e., of the pentose phosphate pathway), thereby speeding syntheses of nucleotides that provide energy to these tissues.

RIBOSE AS A SIGNIFICANT COMPONENT OF NUCLEIC ACIDS

Nucleotides are the molecular building blocks of DNA and RNA. They are chemical compounds consisting of a heterocyclic base, a 5-carbon sugar (ribose or deoxyribose) and at least one phosphate group. They are the monomers of nucleic acids, and 3 or more can bond together to form a nucleic acid.

Nucleosides are glycosylamines consisting of a base (or nucleobase) to a ribose (or deoxyribose) ring. Some nucleosides are cytidine, adenosine, guanosine, and inosine. When nucleosides are phosphorylated in cells, they produce nucleotides (see above).

Given the importance of ribose as an essential part of nucleic acids, nucleotides, nucleosides, its role in the production of energy (as ATP), and its ability to increase synthesis and salvage of nucleotides in the body, the inclusion of ribose in a formula designed to provide high levels of nucleic acids appears especially appropriate.

NUTRITIONAL YEAST (1,500 MG PER SERVING)

Nutritional yeast belongs to the same family of organisms as edible mushrooms. It may be considered man’s oldest industrial micro-organism. For more than 50 years, our supplier has been manufacturing primary grown nutritional yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae), grown specifically for its nutritional value. After the fermentation process is completed the yeast is harvested, thoroughly washed, pasteurized, and dried on roller drum dryers. The special growth medium and unique drying process are the secrets to the exceptional performance of the nutritional yeast in our product. The result is a high-quality non-GMO product containing protein (approximately 48%) composed of essential and non-essential amino acids, dietary fiber, B-complex vitamins, and minerals such as selenium, chromium, potassium, magnesium, sodium, copper, manganese, iron, and zinc.

Nutritional yeast is extraordinarily rich in nucleic acids. In fact, nutritional yeast contains approximately 6% RNA among the highest of known foods.   In Dr. Frank’s protocols described in his book entitled Nucleic Acid Nutrition and Therapy he used both nutritional yeast and high RNA extracts of nutritional yeast to obtain spectacular healing and regeneration. Furthermore, nutritional yeast contains additional functional and beneficial components such as beta-1,3 glucan, trehalose, mannan and glutathione. Studies have show that these components have potential health benefits such as, improved immune response, normalization of cholesterol, and cellular normalization properties.

RICE BRAN SOLUBLES (2,000 MG PER SERVING)

Rice bran solubles are one of the most nutrient-dense superfoods available today. They derive entirely from rice. Specifically, they are a highly concentrated soluble carbohydrate and lipid-rich component of stabilized rice bran (i.e., a non-chemically modified water-soluble fraction). They are also a complete, great-tasting, natural source of B-complex vitamins (i.e., thiamin, niacin, vitamin B6) and contain many other nutrients, including amino acids, antioxidants, essential fatty acids, and phytonutrients, rice bran solubles are one of the world’s perfect whole foods, lacking only a few trace minerals.

In fact, our non-GMO rice bran solubles product offers at least 29 vitamins and minerals, and more than 90 antioxidants. Among these are lipoic acid (useful in blood glucose control), tocopherols, and tocotrienols (which may have a positive effect on cholesterol levels). Alpha tocotrienol has been shown to provide up to fifty times more antioxidant power than alpha tocopherol. Rice bran solubles also contain essential fatty acids, including phospholipids, gamma oryzanol, ferulic acid, and phytosterols. Certain antioxidants in rice bran solubles are documented as supportive in retarding the aging process and combating fee radicals. Our producer of the stabilized brown rice bran in Rejuvenate!™ Berries & Herbs utilizes a process that reliably inactivates the lipase in rice bran while retaining the rest of the food’s chemistry. This is done with a mechanical extrusion process that forces the grain to deform as it squeezes through small openings in a metal die. The high rate of deformation during extrusion causes just the right amount of internal heating for the precise amount of time needed to inactivate the lipase. The result is a stabilized rice bran product that retains most of the vital nutrients of fresh rice bran, but has a shelf life measured in years rather than hours.

KEY NUTRITIONAL ELEMENTS IN RICE BRAN SOLUBLES

  • Gamma oryzanol, beta sitosteryl ferulate, and five other related compounds. These are potent antioxidants and trace nutrients that play a vital role in many aspects of human physiology. Gamma oryzanol is found only in rice bran and has been used successfully in dealing with female hormone imbalances.
    Tocopherols and Tocotrienols – These include all of the eight known forms of Vitamin E including d-alpha tocopherol. The importance of the other forms is probably at least equal to the alpha form.
  • Polyphenols, including ferulic acid, alpha-lipoic acid, and four other polyphenols. Lipoic acid plays an important role in sugar metabolism at the cellular level and is a powerful antioxidant. Ferulic acid also is a powerful antioxidant.
  • Important minerals magnesium, calcium, and phosphorous, as well as manganese and other trace minerals. Minerals are involved in all of the enzyme functions of the body including those involved in energy production.
  • Phytosterols, including beta sitosterol, campesterol, stigmasterol, and at least eleven more. Phytosterols have been shown to prevent the absorption of cholesterol, support healthy prostate function, and help to build immune function.
  • Carotenoids, including beta-carotene, alpha carotene, lycopene, lutein, zeaxanthin, and more. Although beta-carotene is commonly sold as a single-ingredient supplement, alpha-carotene may in fact be more important. Lycopene is responsible for some of the recent health claims relating to tomatoes, and lutein and zeaxanthin play key roles in retinal function.
  • Essential amino acids including tryptophan, histidine, methionine, cysteine, cystine, and arginine. Amino acids are the body’s basic materials for building all of its enzymes, DNA, RNA, and connective tissue.
  • Nine B vitamins supporting the body’s metabolic machinery, polysaccharides (known among other functions to support immunity), and phospholipids. Phospholipids are vital to maintaining healthy cell membranes.
  • Lecithin, which provides the important phospholipids phosphatidyl choline and phosphatidyl serine.
  • Seven identified enzymes, including coenzyme Q10 and superoxide dismutase (an important antioxidant).

HIGH PHOSPHATIDE LECITHIN (98%OIL FREE, NON-GMO, FROM SUNFLOWER SEEDS) (1,500 MG PER SERVING)

In recent years, there has been a renewed interest into the health benefits and dietary requirements of lecithin. Growing evidence now suggests that dietary lecithin is very important for the prevention of many pathologic conditions. Lecithin has been used as a dietary supplement for the purpose of treating or preventing several human diseases including cirrhosis of the liver, arteriosclerosis, and certain deficiencies of brain function and memory. In fact, the most recent research has shown that lecithin is an essential dietary component for ensuring optimal nutrition.

Lecithin and its component phosphatidyl choline are known to be essential for liver function. In fact, even a few weeks on a choline-deficient diet has been shown to cause abnormalities in liver function. Studies in primate models of alcohol-induced cirrhosis have shown that lecithin protects the body from alcohol liver damage. This is a particularly important finding because liver cirrhosis caused by excessive intake of alcohol is the fourth leading cause of death in people 25 to 64 years of age in the US.

Lecithin has also been shown to be essential for proper brain development in infants and children. In fact, supplementation of animal diets with lecithin at particular times of brain development has been shown permanently to increase cognitive function.

MAGNESIUM

Magnesium is one of the most abundant, available metals on earth, and plays crucial roles in the sustenance of life and its chemical processes. The divalent nature of the magnesium cation makes it an ideal activator for enzyme systems. Estimates for its usage in human body systems include over fifty different biochemical reactions and its necessary presence for the operation of over 300 enzymes. Magnesium is essential for energy production, maintenance of electrolyte balance, and neuromuscular function. Investigations into rates of magnesium deficiency show that individuals in developed countries are at remarkably high risk for magnesium deficiency. The suspected primary cause of this risk for deficiency are inadequate, depleted diets that are high in processed foods (from which magnesium is removed but not replaced).

There are several nutritional requirements in the body in order for mitochondria to manufacture ATP. These essential nutrients include oxygen, magnesium, food substrate, ADP, and inorganic phosphate, as well as Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, and Vitamin B6 in their phosphorylated coenzyme forms. The body also needs adequate stores of malate (an important Krebs cycle intermediate) in order for most of these nutrients to function effectively in the process of ATP production. When any of these nutrients are not present in adequate amounts within the mitochondria, a vicious cycle can occur in which ATP is not created in amounts sufficient for proper cellular functioning. Insufficient amounts of ATP mean that the B vitamins may not be adequately phosphorylated leading to improper metabolism and further reductions in ATP production. The much less efficient anaerobic production of ATP will be utilized to a greater extent in such cases. A balance point may be reached in which the body produces only a fraction of the optimal amount of ATP. Under these conditions muscle weakness and fatigue may occur. Abraham and Flechas report that supplementing the diet with magnesium may reverse such conditions of low energy (Jrnl of Nutritional Medicine 3: 49-59).

For the above reasons, we have included magnesium in Rejuvenate!™ Berries & Herbs from magnesium malate (providing both magnesium and malate) and magnesium ascorbate (providing additional magnesium as well as Vitamin C).

DULSE

Dulse is a sea vegetable (i.e., seaweed) that is a rich source of iron, potassium, iodine, Vitamin B6, riboflavin, and dietary fiber. It provides a wide range of minerals, trace elements, enzymes and phytochemicals, as well as some high-quality vegetable protein. Our certified organic raw dulse is sustainably harvested from well-protected coastal passages and low temperature dried.

FOLINIC ACID

Folinic acid, also known as 5-formyl tetrahydrofolate, is one active form in a group of vitamins known as folates. In contrast to folic acid, a synthetic form of folate, folinic acid is one of the forms of folate found naturally in foods. Folate deficiency is believed to be the most common vitamin deficiency in the world due to food processing, food selection, and intestinal disorders. In the body folinic acid may be converted into any of the other active forms of folate.

Folate coenzymes are responsible for the following important metabolic functions: 1) Formation of purines and pyrimidines which, in turn, are needed for synthesis of the nucleic acids DNA and RNA. 2) Formation of heme, the iron-containing protein in hemoglobin, 3) Interconversion of the 3-carbon amino acid serine from the 2-carbon amino acid glycine, 4) Formation of the amino acids tyrosine from phenylalanine and glutamic acid from histidine, 5) Formation of the amino acid methionine from homocysteine (Vitamin B12 as methylcobalamin also is needed for this conversion). Elevated levels of homocysteine have been implicated in a wide range of health disorders. In the reconversion of homocysteine to methionine the body uses the methionine to make the important amino acid s-adenosylmethionine (SAMe) which is known to be helpful in cases of depression, 6) Synthesis of choline from ethanolamine, 7) Formation and maturation of red and white blood cells, and 8) Conversion of nicotinamide to N’-methylnicotinamide.

METHYLCOBALAMIN (COENZYME FORM OF VITAMIN B12)

Methylcobalamin is one of two coenzyme forms of B12 (along with adenosylcobalamin) and can be used directly by the body without metabolic conversion. Vitamin B12 is involved in numerous important body functions, including: 1) Red blood cell formation and control of pernicious anemia, 2) The synthesis and function of nerve tissue, such as myelin, 3) The metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins (Vitamin B12 is necessary for the conversion of methylmalonate to succinic acid, an important Krebs cycle intermediate in energy production), 4) The synthesis or transfer of single carbon units (e.g., allowing the interconversion of serine and glycine and the conversion of homocysteine to methionine), 5) Serving as a coenzyme in the biosynthesis of methyl groups, and 6) Involvement in reactions that convert disulfides (S-S) to the important sulfhydryl group (S-H).

PROLYT – Proteolytic Enzymes Formula

Dr. Hank Liers, PhD proteolytic enzymes prolyt integratedhealthIn the early 1990s one of my chiropractor clients asked me to formulate a proteolytic enzymes formula in capsule form. Specifically, he wanted trypsin, chymotrypsin, bromelain, and papain in the product. I added to this quercetin and grape seed extract for additional anti-inflammatory effect.

My company has been selling this formula under the name Prolyt ever since. It is best described as a full strength proteolytic enzymes formula with synergistic bioflavonoids. Several years ago when I became aware that most of the papayas grown in the world contained genetically modified organisms, I removed the papain and replaced it with curcuminoids from turmeric.

Prolyt today contains the proteolytic enzymes bromelain (from pineapple), trypsin (pancreatic enzyme), and chymotrypsin (pancreatic enzyme), and the polyphenols/bioflavonoids turmeric extract (95% curcuminoids), quercetin and oligomeric proanthocyanidins from grape seed extract in a veggie capsule. While bromelain is often blended with lactose to obtain a reduced standard strength, Prolyt contains the near full-strength proteolytic enzymes extracted naturally from the fruit.

OUR EXPERIENCES REGARDING PROLYT

In the late 1990s a friend of mine had a microscope and display system that allowed live blood analysis. This system enabled one to take a blood sample, put it on a slide, and view it on a TV monitor. Frequently, when he performed this analysis one could observe that the red blood cells were clumped together and not functioning well. He would then ask the person being tested to take two capsules of Prolyt and come back again in 30 minutes. The test was repeated and invariably the red blood cells acted like billiard balls, bouncing off one another and no longer clumping together.

One of my clients told me the story about two old men who loved to play golf but could hardly walk due to arthritis. He said once a week these men would buy a bottle of Prolyt, take a handful of the capsules, and proceed to the golf course out of pain long enough to play golf for the day.

A German health practitioner friend of mine told a client of his who was having all of his wisdom teeth removed to take 100 capsules of Prolyt daily after the surgery. His client did it and he found that he not only controlled his pain, but he healed rapidly in less than a week.

PANCREATIC ENZYMES IN PROLYT

Pancreatic Enzymes: Prolyt may be used as an adjunct in protocols dealing with the digestion of proteins. Trypsin, a pancreatic enzyme, helps to break down large protein molecules by cutting protein chains at specific sites. The large protein molecule is actually a chain of smaller units called amino acids which are linked, end to end, in chains of hundreds. There are 20 different amino acids from which these protein chains are made. The specific site along the protein chain where trypsin is active are those with the amino acids lysine and arginine, two of the smaller amino acids.

The enzyme chymotrypsin, another pancreatic enzyme, also cuts the larger protein chain but at different sites from where trypsin cuts. Chymotrypsin makes its cut at positions along the protein chain that contain very large amino acids such as phenylalanine, tyrosine and tryptophan. The combination of trypsin and chymotrypsin (often along with bromelain) have been used in protocols for breaking down tumors in the body.

In a 1999 Clinical Pearls News interview, Dr. Nicholas J. Gonzalez had this to say about the use of pancreatic enzymes:

“I didn’t come up with the idea to use pancreatic enzymes to treat cancer. The Scottish embryologist, John Beard, who worked at the University of Edinburgh at the turn of the century, first proposed in 1906 that pancreatic proteolytic enzymes, in addition to their well-known digestive function, represent the body’s main defense against cancer. He further proposed that pancreatic enzymes would most likely be useful as a cancer treatment.

“During the first two decades of this century, a number of physicians, both in Europe and in the United States, used injectable pancreatic enzymes to treat advanced human cancer, often times (depending on the quality of the product) with great success. I have collected a number of reports from that time in the major medical journals documenting tumor regression and long-term survival in patients treated with enzyme therapy.

“I began researching the use of oral pancreatic proteolytic enzyme therapy as a treatment for cancer after completion of my second year at Cornell University Medical College in 1981. My research advisor at the time supported and directed my early work, and later supported me during my formal immunology fellowship. In terms of the theoretical foundation, the exact mechanism of action has never been demonstrated. After Beard’s death, the enzyme therapy was largely forgotten and certainly never generated any significant research effort until recently with the funding of my work.

“There are several studies from the 1960s showing, in an animal model, that orally ingested pancreatic enzymes have an anti-cancer effect, and might work through immune modulation, but these studies were preliminary and were never followed-up.

“Dr. Beard believed enzymes had to be injected to prevent destruction by hydrochloric acid in the stomach. However, recent evidence demonstrates that orally ingested pancreatic proteolytic enzymes are acid stable, pass intact into the small intestine and are absorbed through the intestinal mucosa into the blood stream as part of an enteropancreatic recycling process.

“It is clear from our extensive clinical experience that pancreatic proteolytic enzymes have a profound anti-neoplastic effect.”

BROMELAIN IN PROLYT

Bromelain is a mixture of proteolytic enzymes extracted from pineapple that digest proteins. It contains chemicals that when taken between meals might interfere with the growth of tumor cells and slow blood clotting. In addition, bromelain has been used in conditions such as 1) surgeries and injuries (including sports injuries), 2) sinusitis, 3) poor digestion, 4) inflammation, 5) infection, and 6) osteoarthritis.

One study suggested that a combination of bromelain, rutosid (a bioflavonoid), and trypsin worked as well as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, which are commonly used pain relievers, for reducing knee pain from osteoarthritis. NSAIDs include ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin), naproxen (Aleve), and diclofenac (Voltaren), among others.

There are studies that show bromelain may reduce swelling, bruising, healing time, and pain after surgery and physical injuries. It is often used to reduce inflammation from with tendinitis, sprains and strains, and other minor muscle injuries. Studies of people having dental, nasal, and foot surgeries found it did reduce inflammation. In Europe, bromelain is used to treat sinus and nasal swelling following ear, nose, and throat surgery or trauma.

TURMERIC EXTRACT IN PROLYT

Turmeric extract (95% curcuminoids) contains three main chemical compounds – curcumin, demethoxycurcumin, and bisdemethoxycurcumin – collectively known as curcuminoids. Curcuminoids have been shown to be Nrf2 transcription factor activators that turn on the production of the body’s own protective enzymes (such as SOD, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase). Studies have reported that curcumin and turmeric protect the liver against several toxicants both in vitro and in vivo. A number of reports showed the chemopreventive action of turmeric and curcuminoids.
