Blood tests showed a condition of rhabdomyolysis.

In rhabdomyolosis, damaged skeletal striated muscle rapidly breaks down. Consequently, the breakdown products of the damaged muscle cells are released into the bloodstream. Some of the products, including the protein myoglobin, can harm the kidneys.

Extreme or strenuous physical exercise is among the known risk factors for rhabdomyolosis. This is particularly the case when a person is dehydrated. Being an elite athlete who endures training, racing, and traveling for months, it is no surprise that Irena could experience this condition.

Fortunately, Irena’s cramping ended after a few days of rest, hydration, and electrolyte intake as directed by her doctor.

Having time available after her recovery, Irena decided to embark upon a juice cleanse.

She would start with a kidney flush. That made sense to her not only because she had the time available, but also because while she had resumed normal activities, she hoped to cleanse her system so she could return to training in an optimal condition of readiness.

After careful consideration, Irena plans and prepares for a five-day juice cleanse. She obtains a high-quality Breville juicer, kidney-specific herbal teas and tinctures, Rejuvenate! superfoods, and lots of fresh organic produce.

Her plan includes consuming raw foods on the first and last days, and just freshly made vegetable and fruit juices (along with teas, tinctures, and Rejuvenate! superfoods) on the middle days. She will consume up to one gallon of fresh juice daily.

She will not stop her training altogether, but not having to travel or train intensely for races means she can match her training level to her physical capacity during the cleanse.

PREPARATION

I have researched, discussed, and read so much about juice cleanses and think I am to tackle it for five days of rebooting my system.

After months of training, racing, travel, and other life stresses I decided I need to cleanse my body of all the toxins and get a fresh start for my kidneys. I returned from a long few months on the road and am just getting over an episode of cramping where blood tests showed rhabdomyolysis in my kidneys.

The doctor had me get an IV of 2L of fluid to help hydrate and flush my kidneys. After a couple more days of rest and looooots of pedialite and hydration the cramping stopped and I felt back to normal, at least with walking and everyday activity.

Training will take a little longer to rebuild however, so it is the perfect time for a juice cleanse. Without the big intensity workouts that require a lot of energy, and good recovery, I am able to stick with just juice and let my body recover.

Discussing a plan and information with Fred Liers, and Dr. Hank Liers of Health Products Distributors, Inc., we have put together the best program and technique for me as a professional cyclist to tackle this cleanse.

Over the next few days I will be posting daily updates about my journey. I will also include advice, recipes, pictures, and discussion of how I feel while still training and going through this cleanse/diet.

PROGRAM: 5-DAY KIDNEY JUICE CLEANSE

Day 1 and 5: Raw Foods – Eating just fruits and vegetables to ease my body into the more restricted and intense cleanse of just juice

Day 2, 3, 4: Just Juice – Drinking as much and as often as I feel. But only juices with a combo of fruits and vegetables to give me enough vitamins, minerals, and energy to keep my day going and keep training (even with no solid food).

Mornings: Start out with a Lemonade drink first off to get my system going. Then 15–30 min later I drink 8–16 oz of Detox Tea. Then about 1 hr later I’m getting hungry and it’s juice time.

Lemonade Recipe: 8 oz purified water, 4 oz lemon/lime juice (about 3 lemons and 1 lime), cayenne pepper (to taste as things get spicy), small amount of maple syrup or stevia to sweeten ( I have also just been toughing it out and doing without).

Detox Tea: I’m in a crunch for time and money so I just bought the Yogi Brand Peach Detox tea and put 2 bags into 3 quarts of water. 1 quart I drink for my morning tea routine, and the rest I drink throughout the day. The kidney cleanse also calls for taking tictures with the tea. These are reduced down herbal liquids that you can find at whole foods or ordered online.

Fred Liers of Health Products Distributors, Inc., recommended getting a couple different ones since I was in a crunch on time and not able to order the correct ones. I found the Uva Ursi at Whole Foods, but they didn’t have the Parsley or Juniper Berry. I took 2 shot glasses almost full of tea and put in a dropper of the tincture, then took them like a shot before drinking my 8–16 oz of tea.

DAY 1: RAW FOOD AND PREP

Today I started the cleanse with the Lemonade and Detox Tea but was happy to not jump in head first to the strictly juice just yet.

I ate an apple, banana, baby carrots, and a salad for lunch and dinner which included an avocado to get some protein and fats (you can also include nuts since that is considered raw food). I also threw in some watermelon and strawberries into the salad which made it extra good.

Since I got my juicer and wanted to get it for a spin and have some fun experimenting I did make some juices and drank those during the day also.

This first day wasn’t too hard since I am already used to eating a lot of salad and fruits. Just not having any meat or protein was tougher and felt a bit hungrier and meals didn’t hold over as long

I also noticed I was peeing A LOT more just from the tea and juices. This will probably be an indication of the bathroom usage to come in the upcoming days, haha.

Training: 1’20″ ride easy just to feel out legs and get some exercise on the bike. Swam about 30″ total, going back and forth between hot tub and pool to get contrast and circulation in muscles.

DAY 2: LET THE JUICE CLEANSE BEGIN

Started off with my Lemonade, the sourness is already a tough chug but beware of that cayenne. Added too much this morning and it definitely woke me up.

After drinking the tea (20 min after the lemonade) I was surprisingly not very hungry during the morning. I had my first juice at 9:30ish and usually if I don’t eat soon after waking up I’m starving. This was a surprisingly common feeling all day. I kept drinking throughout the day but even when I was riding or swimming I didn’t feel weak or tired at all. Throughout the day I’ve felt pretty good overall.

I am enjoying the lack of thinking in this. I don’t have to think about what I’ll have post ride, or for lunch, or for dinner, because it’s already decided for me…JUICE! No dealing with cravings or suppressing hunger or getting snacks to hold off till meals. I like just being able to drink whenever and as much juice as I want. I feel lighter and no stomach issues.

Today’s Flavors:

1 –    Kale, chard, cucumber, celery, beets, carrots, few strawberries, lime rind, about 1/2 scoop Rejuvenate!

2 –    More Fruit (base from #1) – + Apple, orange, banana, more strawberries, watermelon, lemon/lime rind, ginger

3 –    Garlic (base from #1) – + Garlic clove, parsley, ginger

Review of Juices:

#2 – Definitely sweeter and lighter on flavor

#3 – The garlic juice had a funky aftertaste from the garlic and needed the parsley to cut the strong flavor, but probably put too much because the juice came out a bit spicy. Added more Rejuvenate to this one and helped bring down the intensity from the garlic.

Training: 2’ 10″ ride relaxed and feeling good. Not feeling hungry in the ride, but had to stop for a pee break (that seems to be a common theme today). Hungry at end of the ride and juice was great for recovery. Swam 40″ total, with some back and forth to the hot tub for more circulation.

Felt good and never got hungry since I had juice before and after exercise. That is one thing that was important today with exercising, is to keep juice and hydration available at all times. Pre and post is so important for training and on a cleanse you can’t neglect your body’s needed nutrients.

DAY 3: START STRONG, THEN A LITTLE TIRED

I didn’t even wake up very hungry, and once I had my Lemonade and Tea I felt full already before even having any juice. My routine has gotten pretty on point also; I get up and right away put on water for tea, then I start squeezing the lemons/lime for lemonade.

Once I’m done making the lemonade I sip on it while the tea steeps and I prep for juice. Washing all the produce and getting bottles ready. As I drink down the tea it’s juicing time. Lay out the spread and juice out 3 or 4 quarts. I am having a lot of fun with different recipes and playing with the flavors where each bottle is different.

Today’s Flavors:

1 –    The BASE – Kale, chard, cucumber, celery, beets, carrots, few strawberries, lime rind, about 1/2 scoop Rejuvenate!

2 –    More Fruit (base from #1) – + Apple, orange, banana, more strawberries, watermelon, lemon/lime rind, ginger but no carrots

3 –    Garlic (base from #1) – + Garlic clove, parsley, ginger

4 –    Base but added ginger and parsley

Review of Juices:

#2 –    Is probably my favorite, sweeter and lighter without any harder flavors like with the garlic

#3 –    This one makes me feel like I’m being healthy, cause it doesn’t taste so great, haha.

#4 –    This one had a little kick with the parsley and ginger, definitely tasty!

Juicing Tips: As you can see from the pictures juicing can get messy. I recommend getting all the ingredients and bottles ready and layed out so you can juice out more smoothly. Lay out newspaper under the juicer so and splattering or spilling is a lot easier to clean up. Beware of beets!! They stain and any platters in the way or cabinets needs to be wiped immediately, or it’ll leave a mark. The juicer is easy to wash, without oils it makes a simple rinse quick and simple.

Overall today was a little tougher, and I’m only 3 days in!! How the heck do people do this for months?! The morning and all day was pretty good in not feeling very hungry, but my energy level was definitely lower.

I got about halfway through my ride and started feeling my muscles getting tired even though I wasn’t even going very hard. My mind wasn’t focusing as well (bonktown USA) and wanted to finish the ride, but I stuck it out and finished the training.

Same thing when I went swimming, just feeling like a nap and not high on energy at all. My body is feeling great, clean and light. It’s just that since I am so used to having constant protein and other nutrition inputs this change has come with a little getting used to.

DAY 4: TRAINING A LITTLE TOUGHER

One thing I noticed today is that waking up and getting out of bed was easier and I was ready to get the day going. I don’t feel hungry or sluggish in the morning but found my juicing routine has been pretty nice in the morning. What did hit hard to day was feeling tired in training and then in the evening before bed.

This cleanse is definitely not for the high volume athlete or intense training season. I am glad to be doing light riding and swimming, but I still feel my body tired about 1 hr into a ride and just want to pull over for a nap. I make sure to drink plenty of juice before and after my training for energy, and lots of water during for hydration.

Tip: Make sure you do the cleanse when you can exercise but don’t have intense, high volume, or super focused training. This will drain some of your energy, but you will feel so much better through and after the process is complete.

Today’s Flavors:

1 –    The Base – But no red beets, plus squash, no watermelon + Rejuvenate! mix

2 –    Fruit – + Raspberries and watermelon + Rejuvenate! mix

3 –    Garlic, parsley, squash, no strawberries + Rejuvenate! mix

4 –    Mix assorted + Rejuvenate! mix

By adding this Rejuvenate! superfood mix to my juices it has given me more energy and adds more vitamins and minerals so I am not just drinking the juice alone but also getting other benefits and nutrients that my body needs. There is also extra protein that adds some more substance to the juice to hold my appetite over.

DAY 5: DON’T HOLD BACK, GOING THE DISTANCE

Today should be the last day and the raw food day, but I’ve decided to go for a whole week of cleansing. So I will make it five days of just juice and two days of raw food on either end. I am feeling good with the juice and something in me doesn’t want to stop before complete a full week.

My biggest tip for today when doing the cleanse is to not hold back on the amount of juice you make or drink. It doesn’t matter how much you drank the first day because as the days go on your body will need more nutrients as it burns through stores.

I found that I am losing a lot of weight, not intentionally, but just because of the cleanse and exercise. So if that is your goal then don’t think you have to stick to just a certain volume everyday. Each day I have increased my juice intake by at least two cups. Today I am at four 32 oz bottles (not completely full), and the first day I only had three. Listen to your body and give it what it needs.

Today’s Flavors:

1 –    The Base – + Garlic, parsley, banana, squash, no red beets

2 –    Fruit – The Base – +  Watermelon, strawberries, raspberries, ginger, apple, banana

3 –    Garlic – Garlic, parsley, ginger, red beets, watermelon, no apple

4 –    What was left –  Ginger, apples, kale, beets

I’ve upped the garlic and banana; since garlic is so good for vitamin C and cleansing and banana has some extra calories and energy to run on.

DAY 6: HOME STRETCH

So everyone has said “Wow, only juice, you must be so hungry.” But I’m really not, and I haven’t really had big cravings for anything either. Getting my body into the routine, it has settled and is happy with the nutrients of the juice.

I am happy to start eating real food again tomorrow, but definitely very happy I did this and went through the experience of cleansing. Not just for my physical health but also mental. It was great to refocus on what is important for my training and life beyond just meals and satiating hunger through the day. This helped me rebalance and feel my body in a state of renewal.

One concern for most people when doing something like this is time and money. For time, if you think about the time you take to either make and eat meals or get food at a store or restaurant it takes up about 2–3 hours per day, give or take. I have been getting up each morning and it takes me about 1.5 hrs for prep, juicing, and cleanup. And I drink throughout the day so I am not having to sit down with a plate or meal. It really is a great on-the-go kind of plan.

For money, I have saved all my receipts from the grocery store, so after tomorrow is over I will calculate all of my expenses for this experience. But it has cost me roughly $15 – $20 per day. And that is completely organic produce. I have gotten a couple things from my dad’s garden (which is obviously ideal), but most was store bought.

Thinking about what people spend on meals and eating out, that can get well over $20 per day. And getting juice at a shop or store, can run $5 just for a quart, and I am drinking well over four quarts per day. This is definitely an economical diet if done correctly.

Today’s Flavors:

Basically the same, but today I threw in peaches and more berries…I also strategically put in a banana into my first and second juices, so that before my ride and after I would have the extra sugar and potassium.

DAY 7: ALL JUICED UP

Today was the final day of official cleansing and a day of raw food. I think my body knew it was the day because I woke up hungry for the first time all week. I still did my lemonade/tea and juicing for the day as I wanted to keep my hydration up and keep the routine.

It was nice to think about what I would eat for my first food back, and I went for a banana this morning. Seemed appropriate since bananas are the common cure for cramps, and that’s why I did the cleanse. It was so great tasting and funny thing is, the chewing sensation was weird to get used to again.

The rest of the day was pretty normal and not any huge cravings, but I had half an avocado before my workout and the other half after.

I was surprised to not eat more but just didn’t feel like it, my appetite was pretty slim. But I was definitely satisfied and could say full after just eating a little bit.

In the evening for dinner I went out and had an amazing salad. My body feels so good, I am happy to have completed this journey.

My first solid food in a week!

I did not do this cleanse for weight loss, but to clean out my body and help my kidneys and system recover after the fatigue of cramping. But considering I was in a down time with training it was the perfect time to do it and also shed a couple pounds before harder training again.

So I will say it was incredible to see my weight change as each day passed. I started out at 148 pounds which is pretty normal for me and what I have been racing at this season, today I weighed myself in the morning and was 143.

I am pretty shocked by how much I lost in this short time. And I wasn’t even holding back or feeling the pains someone usually feels in dieting or losing weight, I drank as much as I wanted and never felt hungry or strong urges to eat.

I would really recommend this cleanse to anyone looking to clean up their system and/or to shed some unwanted weight.

It is so important to take on things like this with a smart and prepared approach with the intent of health and well being, not just to get skinny or for looks. If that is the drive then it’s more likely the weight will be put right back on, because it’s about a lifestyle and making good choices for the benefit of your body.

To eat well and be happy with your body is the most important thing.

So I hope this blog post has helped anyone looking to start or research doing a kidney cleanse. Or even just reading along as I go though along my road as a professional cyclist.

It has been an amazing experience and I plan to do it again before my season of hard training starts in the fall/winter.

NUTRITIONAL APPROACHES SUPPORT THE BODY AGAINST VIRUSES

“Flu season” is here. It’s hard to escape it—as evidenced by sick friends and coworkers—and maybe yourself or family members. Not to mention exhortations to get flu shots in the media and elsewhere.

Flu indeed dominates health news during the winter. This year it coincides with massive media coverage on the Ebola virus.

Are flu shots worth taking to protect against viral illness? The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) admits the flu shot may not be effective this year.

In fact, the flu vaccine may offer offer little protection. There are simply too many influenza strains to cover. This year’s vaccine was in production when CDC realized the vaccine does not include the most virulent strain of the season.

What about protection against other viruses? There are thousands. Yet, there are many things you can do to ensure your body can defend itself.

From a perspective of natural healing, the best—and perhaps only—thing to do to combat viruses is establish good health and strong immunity, and then maintain them.

More specifically, natural nutritional approaches supporting the body against viruses include:

1) Establish solid foundational nutrition and optimal nutrients intake though diet and nutritional supplements

2) Build immunity by natural means, including specific immune-enhancing formulas.

3) Take appropriate natural antimicrobial (e.g., antiviral) supplements, including certain herbs, minerals, amino acids, and other nutrients.

In addition, ingredients like artificial colors, flavors, preservatives, as well as deleterious additives, fillers, excipients and other non-nutrients or anti-nutrients.

Important dietary recommendations in the Rejuvenation Program include consuming fresh vegetable juices and smoothies, high-density foods (like chia seeds), and relatively high levels of dietary nucleic acids (like those found in Rejuvenate! superfoods).

BUILD STRONG IMMUNITY (AGAINST VIRUSES)

Building powerful immunity depends substantially on how well the body is nourished. That is, how completely the body receives the nutrition required to support its general good health and enable it to defend itself . But that is not all.

When it comes to defending the body against viruses, two specific types of formulas can play important roles beyond diet and foundational supplements. These are 1) immunity building formulas that include specific substances/nutrients known to support a robust immune system and 2) Formulas that include nutrients/herbs/substances acting as antivirals and antimicrobials in the body.

Many specific immune-building formulas/nutrients, as well as formulas acting as antivirals are included among HPDI’s Enhancement Formulas. These formulas include Immune-Assist™ (medicinal mushrooms), olive leaf extract, Cordyceps, Vitamin D3 Plus, Nascent Iodine, Selenium, Zinc, silver (SilverBiotics Polyvalent silver), and magnesium formulas. Some of these formulas are described in detail in Part Five of the HPDI Rejuvenation Program, as well as below.

Other immune-building foods/herbs and antiviral substances like echinacea and garlic are also part of the Rejuvenation Program. For example, echinacea is considered in Part Five, and garlic is discussed in Part Six as its own supporting protocol. Other supporting protocols include hydrotherapy and sauna therapy. Thus, most of HPDI’s immune-building and antiviral type formulas fall into either the category of Enhancement Formulas or Supporting Protocols. In a few cases, certain supplement formulas or recommended foods/herbs both build immunity and act directly as antivirals (e.g., garlic).

Note: there are other important nutrients like glutathione, quercetin, and certain liposomal forms of nutrients (e.g., vitamin C) that we won’t go cover in this article, but that can be useful for immunity against viruses. While this article is not intended to be comprehensive, our goal nevertheless is to provide resources that can help anyone seeking optimal health.

IMMUNE-BUILDING FORMULAS

As mentioned, immune-building formulas in the HPDI system usually fall into the category of Enhancement Formulas. Enhancement Formulas are the “next-level” of defense built upon the Foundational Supplements.

That is, after individuals have established high nutrient intake using foundational supplements, we typically recommend Enhancement Formulas next because of their unique capacities to support and build health.

While not all Enhancement Formulas specifically build immunity, most of them support health in ways that strengthen immunity. (Note: Another category of HPDI supplements is Specific Condition Formulas designed to address a specific problem or issue.)

While there are various immune-building formulas in the HPDI system, we focus on a select few in this article.

SELECTED ENHANCEMENT FORMULAS

IMMUNE-ASSIST™

Every week it seems, new studies report more information on the importance of Vitamin D for health. Among its many benefits: immunity boosting effects. Vitamin D has been shown to reduce the incidence of seasonal flu, for example. (See Vitamin D Abstracts in the resources section below.)

Vitamin D3 is a fat-soluble vitamin increasingly known as a nutrient essential for health and well-being. NASCENT IODINE

Nascent Iodine is the ideal form of iodine, rapidly absorbed and used by the body when taken as a nutritional supplement. Iodine is associated with a wide range of benefits, not limited to supporting thyroid function and regulating metabolism, boosting energy levels (when iodine is deficient), supporting and maintaining detoxification systems and processes, supporting immune system function, fighting infections (natural antiseptic), and many other healthy benefits. POLYVALENT SILVER

Colloidal silver is a proven antimicrobial. It is highly effective against a broad range of viruses, bacteria, and fungi. It can help you combat these microbes.

HPDI offers a Silver Biotics® product made using a patented method to produce nano-silver particles suspended in a medium of highly purified water. The Silver Biotics® particles have been defined as a metallic nano-silver particle with a thin coating of polyvalent silver oxide.

The patented production method supercharges the silver particles using 10,000 volts AC, whereas other colloidal silver solutions are typically only charged with 100 volts DC. MAGNESIUM, ESPECIALLY MAGNESIUM CHLORIDE (MgCl2)

Magnesium is one of the most important minerals for health. It offers so many benefits that it would be difficult describe them briefly. However, suffice it to say that magnesium supports immunity, energy (ATP) production, vascular health, and total body wellness. Yet, nearly everyone (greater than 90% of Americans) is deficient.

It is required for more than 325 magnesium-dependent enzymes, cellular homeostasis, and activation of the B vitamin thiamin. It mediates the functions of the nervous and endocrine systems, supports proper muscle and nerve function, stabilizes heart rhythm, helps to regulate blood sugar levels, and supports normal blood pressure. As noted, magnesium is important in energy metabolism and the synthesis of proteins. The majority of magnesium within the nucleus of cells is closely connected with nucleic acids and mononucleotides. In fact, magnesium helps to maintain the structural integrity of DNA.

Unlike any other form of magnesium, magnesium chloride is a known infection fighter. As early as 1915, the French surgeon, professor of clinical surgery, and French Academy of Sciences member Dr. Pierre Delbet (1861–1957) used magnesium chloride solution to cleanse wounds in soldiers injured during the First World War. He had searched for an antiseptic that could disinfect wounds, but would not damage tissue (and thereby encourage mortification) as did other antiseptics then available. He reported that magnesium chloride was superior to traditional antiseptics not only in its effectiveness in treating wounds, but also because it did not harm body tissues.

Dr. Delbet discovered that magnesium chloride solution increased leucocyte activity and phagocytosis (i.e., the destruction of pathogenic microbes) when applied externally (i.e., used transdermally). He performed numerousin vitro and in vivo studies using magnesium chloride solution. These experiments led to his discovery that magnesium chloride was a potent immune stimulant whether applied externally (i.e., transdermal application), injected intravenously, or taken by mouth (i.e., consumed orally). He termed this immunity boosting effect “cytophilaxis” (a cytophylactic is a substance that protects cells and encourages their healthy growth). In this regard, he observed increased phagocytosis (the engulfing of pathogens by white blood cells) by up to 300 percent. That is, white blood cells were three times more effective at destroying microbes than before administration of magnesium chloride.

The pioneering efforts of Dr. Delbet were followed in the 1940s by fellow French physician Dr. A. Neveu. Dr. Neveu confirmed the immuno-stimulant effects of magnesium chloride, and he successfully tested magnesium therapy for wide range of conditions. These conditions included colds and flu, throat infections of the tonsils and pharnyx, lung and respiratory conditions, gastrointestinal inflammation (stomach flu), skin infections, septic wounds, and many common childhood conditions. More recently, other physicians such as Dr. Raul Vergini in Italy have confirmed the results reported earlier by Dr. Delbet and Dr. Neveu. Dr. Vergini reports excellent results using small quantities of orally administered magnesium chloride solution (2.5 percent magnesium chloride) both for proven applications developed by Dr. Delbert and Dr. Neveu, and for a broad range of other health conditions.

VITAMIN C

Vitamin C is a Foundational Supplement in the HPDI supplement system. That is, we consider it more fundamental than an Enhancement Formula, and so ideally everyone takes Vitamin C daily as part of a set of foundational supplements. I’m discussing it here because it plays a significant roles as immune-booster, and because the body may benefit from additional amounts of Vitamin C as a means of supporting health when fighting viral infection.

If you’re not already taking Vitamin C as part of your daily basic (i.e., foundational) supplements, then be sure either to add it to your supplement regimen or at least increase your intake during times you’re likely to be exposed to viruses.

Never forget the power of Vitamin C to benefit health, including support for strong immunity. Nobel prizewinner Dr. Linus Pauling documented the manifold benefits of this essential nutrient. If you read his research (in his books like How to Live Longer and Feel Better), you will see there is good reason why Vitamin C is classified a “vitamin” because without it we cannot survive.

IN THE KITCHEN WITH DR. HANK LIERS

Dr. Hank Liers, PhD in the kitchen hpdiI love spending time in the kitchen coming up with new recipes that optimize nutrition and taste good. One of my favorite ways of getting excellent nutrition into myself and my family is through the preparation of exotic egg dishes. Although I enjoy eggs by themselves, I much prefer to prepare combinations of eggs with vegetables.

Whenever possible I use vegetables grown in my garden with the use of rock dust, worm castings, compost, and special fertilizers. Please see my blog post entitled “Gardening for Super Health” to learn more about my gardening methods!

Recently I prepared an exotic egg dish and shared it with Bob, our webmaster. Bob also loves to prepare and consume high-quality foods and commented that he would surely go to any restaurant that would prepare a dish such as this. He suggested that our blog readers would enjoy it as well. So here it is!!

HANK’S EXOTIC EGG DISH

INGREDIENTS

1) Organic greens from the garden including red kale, lacinato kale, cabbage leaves, broccoli leaves, beet greens, and parsley.

2) Onion (organic)

3) Yellow zucchini (organic)

4) Tomato (organic)

5) egg plant (organic)

6) Green peppers (organic)

7) Spinach (organic)

8) 7 organically grown eggs (from local farmer ideally)

9) 2 tablespoons of organic coconut oil

10) 1 tablespoon of organic cold pressed extra virgin olive oil

11) Spices including garlic, black pepper, turmeric powder, and sea salt

12) Optional – turkey bacon, shiitake mushrooms, butter.

HOW TO PROCESS IN THE KITCHEN

1) Begin by cutting items 1–6 into bite size pieces

2) Put coconut oil into a 10–12″ skillet (I prefer salad master cookware) and heat with low-medium setting.

3) Add the cut vegetables and cook until partially done (not too much!) and add the spices in amounts that please your taste buds.

Ahh! The smell of all of this organic goodness cooking might attract the neighbors!

4) Then add a good amount of spinach on top (I use 1/2 bag of Trader Joe’s spinach) (about 3 ounces).

5) Now crack open the eggs and add them on top of the spinach. Put the skillet top on and increase the heat just a bit.

6) When the egg albumin begins to turn white, use a spatchler to break up all of the egg yolks and thoroughly mix them into the vegetables.

7) Put the cover back on and continue to cook – mixing occasionally until the consistency is firm, but not overdone.

8) Remove from heat and sprinkle the olive oil on top and gently blend into the dish.

REJUVENATE RECIPES

As you might guess, I am a big consumer of our Rejuvenate! products and equally creative in the kitchen when looking for new ways to enjoy them.  Here are a few of my recent concoctions using Rejuvenate! superfoods.

1) PEACHES WITH REJUVENATE! BERRIES & HERBS AND KNUDSEN ‘Just Aronia’ and ‘Just Concord Grape’ Juices

I recently picked several hundred organic peaches from my super productive peach tree. I took a few peaches (2–4) and sliced them into a bowl. I then sprinkled 2 scoops of Rejuvenate! Berries & Herbs on top of the peaches. I added about an ounce or two of Knudsen’s ‘Just Aronia’ and ‘Just Concord’ juices and mixed everything with a spoon. You could use any of the other Knudsen Just Fruit juices (cranberry, pomegranate, blueberry, tart cherry, etc.) Then I enjoyed this tasty, highly nutritious treat!! :=))

2) REJUVENATE! BLEND WITH MIXED JUICES

This week I put about 1 oz each of ‘Just Aronia’ and ‘Just Concord’ grape juice in a quart jar along with 1 oz of Santa Cruz Organic Lemon juice. To this I added 2 scoops of Original Rejuvenate!, 2 scoops of Rejuvenate Plus, and 1 scoop of Berries and Herbs. I added enough water from my water ionizer to fill the jar, put on the cap and shook vigorously. This was a good portion of my food intake for the afternoon and evening.

3) REJUVENATE! DRINK FOR MY GRANDSON

In a one-half-quart jar, I add 2 oz of organic unsweetened almond milk, 1 scoop of Rejuvenate Plus, 1 scoop of Rejuvenate! Berries & Herbs, the contents of a PRO-C capsule, the contents of a Multi Two (multivitamin) capsule, a little chipped ice, and enough ionized water to fill the jar. I cap the jar and shake it vigorously. My 6-year-old grandson Olin happily drinks this super-nutritious concoction with a straw! He drinks about three of these drinks daily – lucky guy!!!

KIDNEY CLEANSING WITH JUICES & HERBS

Fred Liers PhD kidney cleansing rejuvenation program hpdiKidney cleansing is an important part of maintaining health. It is not difficult to cleanse your kidneys periodically. This supports good kidney health and overall health. It also can prevent bigger problems related to the kidneys from developing into health-threatening issues. Healthy kidneys are essential for vibrant living. Kidneys serve many functions,  including filtering blood. They are organs of elimination and detoxification. As such, taking care of them via kidney cleansing is not unlike changing the oil in your vehicle. Regular maintenance is far easier than the dealing with the consequences of doing nothing to support kidney health.

Kidney cleansing is part of the HPDI Rejuvenation Program. It falls under the category of detoxification, like liver cleansing. I’ve written about liver cleansing in previous articles, e.g., see Liver Cleanse with Juice & Herbs. In fact, kidney cleansing shares much in common with liver cleansing. Yet, the differences are significant.

 KIDNEY CLEANSING BASICS

There are various types of kidney cleanses available. At its simplest, kidney cleansing revolves around consuming lemon or lime juice in water. I’ve written at length on that topic in articles like Rejuvenate! Lemonade  – Delicious & Satisfying and The Summer Lemonade Diet. Drinking lots of freshly made organic lemonade or limeade (with or without superfoods like Rejuvenate! or chlorella) goes far in supporting and maintaining healthy kidneys. But kidney cleansing goes well beyond consuming lemonade.

A complete kidney cleanse usually involves specific herbal kidney teas and tinctures in addition to a citrus drink (i.e., lemonade). Also, there exist more potent protocols for naturally cleansing kidneys when dealing with issues such as kidney stones or other problems specific to kidneys. I’ll address a few of those, too.

How often? I typically perform three to five days of kidney cleansing every four months. That is, about once per season. And that’s almost always in addition to my “normal” consumption of fresh, organic lemonade for health.

Here is a basic lemonade recipe for a kidney-bladder flush:

1. KIDNEY CLEANSING LEMONADE

INGREDIENTS: JUICE OF ONE MEDIUM LEMON AND ONE MEDIUM LIME (OR TWO OF EITHER ONE), 16–32 OUNCES PURE WATER, CAYENNE PEPPER (PINCH), MAPLE SYRUP (OPTIONAL)

Mix these ingredients in a one-quart mason jar or pitcher. Consume the entire drink within a few minutes. Then about fifteen to twenty minutes later, drink two cups of kidney-bladder tea along with one-dropperful of kidney tincture per cup of tea.

You can obtain commercial kidney teas at natural foods stores. One good commercial kidney tea is Yogi Tea’s Peach-Detox Tea. Perhaps my favorite prepared loose tea for kidney cleansing is Dr. Richard Schulze’s K-B Tea (available from American Botanical Pharmacy: www.herbdoc.com). You can also make your own kidney tea with loose herbs you obtain yourself from natural foods stores or herb suppliers like Pacific Botanicals (see resources section below). If you decide to make your own kidney tea, here is a basic recipe:

2. KIDNEY CLEANSING TEA RECIPE

A) UVA URSI AND JUNIPER BERRY (MIX EQUALLY; THIS WILL BE 50% OF YOUR TEA)

B) THE OTHER 50% CONSISTS OF EQUAL PARTS: CORNSILK, PARSLEY ROOT, DANDELION, HORSETAIL, GOLDENROD, HYDRANGEA ROOT, GRAVEL ROOT, MARSHMALLOW

Use one rounded tablespoon (or more) of kidney cleansing tea per sixteen ounces of boiling water for this tea. Pour water over tea and let steep. You can also add fresh carrot tops or watermelon seed and rind at the time you make the tea. Drink two cups of this tea about fifteen minutes after you drink the lemonade drink. Ideally, you will also drink one or two cups of this tea in the early afternoon and early evening. If you require greater stone-dissolving power, you can increase the hydrangea and/or gravel root to as much as 25% of the second part of the tea mixture. Or you can try the four-day stone dissolving program (outlined below).

It’s fine to make one or two servings of kidney cleansing tea at a time. But I typically prefer to make larger amounts and simply re-heat it during the day. For example, I usually place six tablespoons of kidney tea into 60 ounces of water in a steel or glass pot (yielding six cups for the day). I usually do this the night before I plan to make the tea allowing the tea sit in the water overnight.

Then in the morning while I make my lemonade drink, I bring the water to a boil, reduce heat and let simmer for a minute before turning off the heat. 15–20 minutes after consuming the lemonade drink, the kidney cleansing tea has cooled a bit (but remains warm). I drink two cups (16 ounces) of tea at a time. I strain the herbs when making the tea and then add them back into the pot.

At the end of the each day, I add more fresh dried kidney tea and fresh water into the pot (usually six more tablespoons of tea and 60 ounces of water (i.e., one tablespoon of kidney tea per 20 ounces of water) and repeat this process the next day. After three days, I discard all the “used” kidney tea herbs, rinse the pot, and re-start the process with fresh dried kidney tea.

While the combination of lemonade drink and kidney tea is powerful by itself, greater effects are obtained when a kidney tincture is used with the tea either placed directly into it, or consumed separately. I consume approximately one dropperful of tincture per cup of kidney cleansing tea. Kidney tinctures can be found commercially, including the one I like best, Dr. Schulze’s organic K-B tincture.

Here is a basic recipe for a kidney tincture if you decide to make one yourself using organic or wildcrafted herbs from a supplier like Pacific Botanicals:

3. KIDNEY TINCTURE/TONIC RECIPE

A) 50% OF AN EQUAL MIXTURE JUNIPER BERRIES AND UVA URSI LEAF.

B) EQUAL MIXTURE OF CORNSILK, HORSETAIL HERB, AND BURDOCK HERB. (GOLDENROD FLOWER TOPS AND PIPSISSEWA LEAF OPTIONAL)

Place all herbs in a blender with vodka. Blend thoroughly. Place blended mixture into a mason jar. Label it clearly and include the date made. Let sit for at least two weeks, but preferably one month or longer. Then pour into a large bowl using a T-shirt (or cheesecloth) as a filter. Pour the filtered liquid back into the mason jar. Discard the solids. Ideally you would create the tonic on the new moon and strain on a full moon. As noted, use one dropper (35 drops) of kidney tincture per cup of kidney tea. Because ideally you will drink 4–6 cups of kidney tea daily, you will use 4–6 droppers total (one per cup) of kidney tincture.

START KIDNEY CLEANSING

A basic kidney cleansing program (i.e., kidney cleanse) can be as little as five days long. As I mentioned, it can be as simple as drinking a few glasses of freshly made lemonade and a two or three cups of kidney tea daily. However, I find that reserving at least five days for a dedicated kidney cleanse works best. That doesn’t mean you can’t do a Master Cleanse type lemonade diet for a few days or weeks. It just means dedicated kidney cleansing provides complete support for optimal kidney function.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING KIDNEY CLEANSING

Periodic kidney cleansing with vegetable juice and kidney herbs not only cleanses and detoxifies the kidneys, but also the entire body. For example, a kidney cleanses benefits the entire urinary (renal) system, including the bladder and ureters. It will dissolve mineral buildup and is known to dissolve kidney stones of various sizes. The kidneys main job is to filter and cleanse blood. What this means is that kidney cleansing will help your kidneys do their job of filtering blood. This ultimately improves the health of your blood cells, and thereby the health of your entire body.

Kidney cleansing provides many of benefits, including providing a significant amount of hydration to the entire body. This high level of hydration will help support proper fluid and electrolyte balance in your body. One of the most important aspects of proper kidney cleansing with lemonade, herbs, and vegetable juices is that it gives the digestive system a break, and allows for simultaneous rejuvenation of the gastrointestinal and urinary tracts. A program for kidney cleansing can include a subprogram for bowel detoxification, which is considered by many to be a foundational aspect of detoxification. I will provide a complete kidney cleansing program (below) that includes bowel cleansing herbal formulas and routines.

There are additional benefits. Kidney cleansing is a great place to start your efforts toward overall body detoxification (i.e., detoxifications programs) because the skills learned and developed in implementing it are also applicable to liver cleansing (the subject of previous blog articles) and other modes of detoxification.

KIDNEY CLEANSING IS FUN

Another fact to consider. Kidney cleansing is fun!! Okay, it’s serious business when it comes to kidney health. It can transform you health and your life. But fundamentally, you will eventually find yourself in a state of bliss during your cleanse. I always do!! This kidney-cleansing–induced state of bliss not only relates to doing something supremely good for yourself, but more practically, it so amazingly improves your nutritional status, your alkalinity (pH), the health and vibrancy of your kidneys, your brain function, and so much more…that you simply bliss out. That’s a fact for the vast majority of people.

EQUIPMENT NEEDED FOR KIDNEY CLEANSING

There isn’t much equipment you will need, but these items are useful:

• Citrus Juicer (manual) (steel, glass, or ceramic) for juicing lemons and/or limes.

• Citrus Press (e.g., Orange-X) (optional) for faster juicing of lemons and limes, especially for larger amounts.

• Juicer (e.g., centrifugal, twin gear, masticator, single augur, etc.) for vegetable juices.

• Blender or Vitamix (optional) for blender drinks.

• Pot (steel or glass) for boiling hot water for herbal kidney tea.

START YOUR DAY WITH LEMONADE

A kidney cleanse involves consuming the kidney cleansing lemonade drink (see recipe above) in the morning. The lemonade is followed 15–20 minutes later by a hot (or warm) herbal tea containing kidney herbs plus an herbal kidney tincture formula (see recipe above). In addition to the kidney tincture, other useful tinctures include echincea tincture or detoxification herb tincture (see resource section below). You will again consume the tea and kidney tincture several times during the day. That is, drink two cups (16 ounces) of kidney tea 15–20 minutes after the kidney drink, and then drink an additional 1–2 cups twice during the day. Make sure to take a dropperful of kidney tincture per cup either in the tea itself or separately, if you prefer.

Fresh vegetable juices and superfoods are consumed after the lemonade kidney drink, kidney tea, and kidney tinctures. Drink at least 64 ounces (two quarts) of fresh vegetable juice daily in divided doses mixed with superfoods. Consume up to 128 ounces (one gallon) of fresh juice daily.

You can do a kidney cleansing program for as little as three days or for as long as three months (or longer) depending on individual needs. At longer durations, one week of kidney cleansing can be alternated with one week of liver cleansing or bowel cleansing.

After a long period of kidney cleansing (e.g., two or three weeks) it may be desirable to take at least a short break from herbs and tinctures. Continue with fresh vegetable juices and superfoods, and any additional protocols you may decide to follow.

You can initially aim for five to seven days of kidney cleansing. This can include one day of raw foods at the start and another day of raw foods at the end. Thus, a five day kidney cleanse might start with a day of raw foods (plus juices, teas, and tinctures) followed by three days of only juices, teas, and tinctures, and then finish with another day of raw foods (plus juices, teas, and tinctures). This schedule can work for individuals on the job, because it can start on a Thursday and end the following Monday.

NOW START JUICING

After consuming the morning lemonade drink, herbal tea, and tinctures, wait at least 15 minutes before consuming juice and superfoods. As noted, you can drink up to four quarts (one gallon) of juice daily (and two quarts minimum), so don’t hesitate to get started consuming fresh juice. Drink juice as often you like and whenever you feel hungry. Spacing your juice intake during the day may work best to keep up your energy. You may experience lulls in your energy levels. This is normal during kidney cleansing. Fortunately, more caloric energy is available in the form of fresh juice, so drink up!

Many people enjoy their superfoods added directly into their juice. Others prefer to drink superfoods separately in water. Because you will be consuming plenty of fresh juice and pure water, experiment to see what you like best. Superfoods can be very energizing, which also means they work well with vegetable juice to provide energy. You may wish to take most of your superfoods earlier in the day (e.g., between 9 am and 1 pm) in order to avoid over-energizing yourself as the day winds down.

WE RECOMMEND REJUVENATE! SUPERFOODS

We recommend taking Rejuvenate! superfoods during kidney cleansing. I primarily use original Rejuvenate! because it provides the most chlorella, which is highly cleansing and detoxifying for the entire body. All Rejuvenate! superfoods taste good (yet everyone has their favorite). I prefer Rejuvenate! (original greens) for purposes of cleansing and detoxification, but all of them provide therapeutic levels of dietary nucleic acids. Few people get adequate levels of nucleic acids in their diet.

Dr. Benjamin S. Frank asserted that nucleic acids are essential nutrients like vitamins and minerals. I personally feel the difference when I consumer sufficient dietary nucleic acids (about 300 mg daily minimum for me). That’s about the amount of nucleic acids provided by one scoop of Rejuvenate! (any version since they all provide about the same amount per serving). 300 mg (the amount of nucleic acids provided in one scoop of Rejuvenate! original) makes a noticeable difference in my energy level, feelings of well being, and improved appearance.

I recommend taking three to six scoops (or more) daily because the benefit continue to accrue at higher levels. 1,500 mg (the amount of nucleic acids in five scoops of original Rejuvenate!) seems to be an optimal amount to take per day. More than that amount doesn’t appear to give me any additional benefits, but I definitely notice a corresponding decrease in benefits when I consume smaller daily servings.

FOUNDATIONAL SUPPLEMENTS & ENHANCEMENT FORMULAS

I always recommend taking four foundational supplements daily. The four supplements are a high-potency multivitamin (like Mighty Multi-Vite!™), essential fats, antioxidant / vitamin C formula (like Ultimate Protector™ or PRO-C™), and a Rejuvenate! superfood. I have discussed the importance of foundational supplements in other articles, including Rejuvenation Program: Part Four.

During kidney cleansing, simply continue taking your supplements with juice. HPDI also recommends seven enhancement supplements important for building and maintaining optimal health. Enhancement supplements include: CoQ10 (ubiquinone) or ubiquinolMyo-Mag (magnesium & malic acid), Hepa Plus (liver support formula), Nascent Iodine, echinacea, and Immune-Assist. HPDI offers all of these formulas. Your use of enhancement supplements will depend upon your individual needs, but most individuals will gain significant benefits from taking them. ADDITIONAL IMPORTANT PRACTICES

Other important practices you may wish to include during the remainder of the day after a morning kidney lemonade drink and kidney herbal tea include: 1) bowel cleansing herbs (no need to take a break from these herbs); 2) liquids (other than kidney tea), including herbal teas and pure water (try to drink at least a few quarts in addition to vegetable juices during the day), 3) exercise (preferably one hour) (at the intensity of your choice, but walking and yoga are good, especially for moving lymph fluid), 4) meditation, affirmations, prayer/mantras, deep breathing exercises, journaling, etc. to relax and center the mind.

If there is a particularly affected area of the body that you wish to heal, you may include hydrotherapy (e.g., hot and cold showers), sauna therapy, castor oil packs, or poultices (e.g., a drawing poultice). I have detailed some of these important practices in my articles on the Rejuvenation Program, including supporting protocols for rejuvenation. I won’t go into much detail here, but you can refer back to my series of ten blog articles on the Rejuvenation Program, and to the Rejuvenation Program page itself, which is on our main website.

If there are any practices or protocols that are important to you, then definitely consider adding them into your kidney cleansing routine. I make many suggestions, but you may know (or learn) what works best for you in terms of practices that will make your kidney cleansing experience better. Please include them!!

I won’t go into much detail at this point regarding many important practices that can support successful kidney cleansing. But I will address the beneficial role of parsley, garlic, and watermelon, as well as the topic of bowel cleansing. I have discussed bowel cleansing in previous posts (see Rejuvenation Program: Part Two), but I feel it is particularly valuable during kidney cleansing.

SPECIAL ROUTINES FOR KIDNEY CLEANSING

Beyond the basic kidney cleansing regimen I discuss above, there are several other routines that can boost kidney health. You can find ways to incorporate these routines or practices into the lemonade-based kidney cleanse, but they also work very well on their own. And for individuals who require kidney cleansing beyond the basic lemonade- and kidney herb-based routine, these special routines may be the very ones that make the difference in terms of kidney health.

PARSLEY JUICE

Consuming fresh parsley and drinking parsley tea are great for kidney cleansing. The most therapeutic form of parsley for kidney health is fresh parsley juice. Run it through your juicer. The best juicers for leafy green vegetables are twin gear (like Green Star), masticator (Champion), and single augur (Hurom). Common centrifugal juicers won’t juice parsley quite as well, but if that’s all you have then by all means use it.

Tip: If you’re using a centrifugal juicer for greens, then consider running the fresh pulp through the juicer a second time. This will help maximize the amount of green juice you obtain.

Parsley is an excellent kidney tonic.

Garlic is another great herb not just for kidneys, but for the entire urinary tract and indeed the whole body. One neat thing I discovered is that if you juice fresh garlic with fresh parsley, then the parsley removes nearly all the garlic smell and taste. I have juiced a huge, spreading parsley plant from the garden along with an entire bulb of garlic. And you’d never know there was any garlic in the juice. Just use good judgement. If you’re just juicing a handful of parsley, then maybe just juice a a clove or two of garlic. Another tip. Put the garlic through the juicer first, and then add the parsley. That way the parsley deodorizes the garlic.

WATERMELON

Consuming watermelon is healthy for kidneys and urinary tract. If you eat one or two medium- to large-sized watermelons in a day, then you will definitely benefit from it. But like all the other foods I’ve talked about, juicing watermelon is really the most therapeutic. This is largely because it is the watermelon rind that provides significant benefits. It is much easier to juice the rind (since most people won’t eat it) right along with the red, meaty parts and the juice still tastes good. The rind also contains bioavailable minerals (like natural sodium) that are beneficial to kidneys.

Also note that watermelon seeds are beneficial for kidneys, so try to eat and juice varieties that are not seedless. Seedless varieties undoubtedly offer benefits, but watermelon seeds–like the rinds–provide uniquely therapeutic substances.

ADDENDUM

FOUR-DAY PROGRAM FOR ELIMINATING KIDNEY STONES

Okay, I’m including a special program for individuals who are already dealing with kidney stones. There are times when the basic lemonade-based regimen is not the most effective place to start kidney cleansing. As I mentioned, kidney cleansing should be simple and easily done routinely (i.e., once every three or four months). But kidney cleansing can’t be routine if you have large numbers of stones. That is, a lemonade-based kidney cleanse has adequate power to dissolve small stones while cleansing kidneys and the entire urinary tract. When there are a significant number of stones already present in the kidneys, it is best to first use an herbal formula specifically for removing stones. Here is a formula for dissolving kidney stones and a four-day program for eliminating them.

4. HERBAL FORMULA FOR DISSOLVING KIDNEY STONES

2 Ounces Hydrangea Root

2 Ounces Gravel Root

1 Ounce Marshmallow Root

DIRECTIONS

Preferably use all organic ingredients. Take a total of five ounces of these combined roots, either cut or powdered. Take two quarts of freshly squeezed apple juice. Place half the herbs (2.5 ounces) into each quart of fresh apple juice. Allow to sit overnight. In the morning bring the mixture to a boil and let simmer for 15 minutes. Let the mixture cool, strain the herbs from one quart of it. Drink the entire quart during the first day consuming about 2.5 ounces each hour. Also make sure to drink an additional two quarts (32 ounces) of water the first day. Let the other quart sit in a cool, dark place and shake it a few times daily. The next morning, strain it. Then drink this (second) quart at one ounce per hour (during the hours that you’re awake) for two days. On the days you should also consume two quarts of water and two quarts of fresh vegetable juice. On the fourth day, you should aim for a juice fast totaling 64 ounces of purified water and 64 ounces of fresh vegetable juices.

During the entire four-day period, you should consume only pure water and freshly made juices (including the strained apple juice with herbs). The idea is to gradually increase fluid intake daily. Thus, note that the first day you drink up to one additional quart of fluids, then two additional quarts on days two and three, and finally up to four quarts on the fourth day. Fasting the entire four days consuming only the fresh juices and purified water produces best results.

If you opt not to fast, then the diet should be totally raw and vegan (100% plant based) consuming only fruits, fruit juices, vegetables, and vegetable juices. Good juices include orange, cranberry, watermelon, and vegetable juice combinations such as carrot, parsley, garlic, and ginger. Also good are purified water with lemon and/or lime juice and and kidney and bladder tea (see above) at the rate of two to six cups daily.

Most people won’t need this four-day program for dissolving stones. That is, the basic kidney-cleansing lemonade program is quite effective on its own. But I feel obligated to include it for individuals who will benefit from it. For these persons (and maybe you’re one of them) dissolving stones is an important first step in the process of kidney cleansing. Once the stones are dissolved, then you can use the lemonade-based kidney cleansing regimen at any time.

I promised (above) to include a complete discussion about bowel cleansing, which is important for detoxification under any circumstances. Bowel cleansing can be performed during kidney cleansing, liver cleansing, or separately all by itself.

BOWEL CLEANSING

A BOWEL CLEANSE IS IDEAL WHILE KIDNEY CLEANSING

Many natural care practitioners say that all cleansing begins with bowel cleansing. I believe they say this partly because their experience shows that just doing a complete bowel cleanse can significantly improve their patients’ health and “cure” many maladies. Certainly, cleansing the bowel before kidney cleansing is a good idea, and will help prepare the body for it. Bowel cleansing itself no doubt is powerful. But when combined with kidney cleansing, bowel cleansing can facilitate the cleansing process, and support processes of detoxification, rejuvenation, and creation of optimal health. So, it is always a good idea to spend at least some time during kidney cleansing to perform a bowel cleanse. It can easily be done simultaneously or separately.

A basic juice flush usually acts to cleanse the bowel. However, the ultimate goal is to facilitate the body’s creation of health by engaging in practices that act synergistically to support the most complete cleanse possible. With respect to bowel cleansing, we recommend several excellent formulas that can be used while kidney cleansing. These formulas include HPDI’s own Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula, which acts to sweep the entire gastrointestinal tract.

INTESTINAL REJUVENATION FORMULA

We recommend you take Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula up to three times daily (away from food or juice) mixed with at least 12–16 ounces of water). Initially, you might just take it once daily at the level of one teaspoon. Eventually, you can work your way up to one teaspoon three times daily. It is important to make sure your bowel works well at the initial levels (1/2 teaspoon to 2 teaspoons) before increasing the dose. The reason for starting at lower levels is that some people can experience constipation (or reduced bowel transit time) initially due to increased fiber. The body eventually adjusts to it, and then the formula will help facilitate bowel action.

Okay, I realize I’ve spoken at length about bowel cleansing in an article on kidney cleansing. It’s just that important!! PERIODIC KIDNEY CLEANSING SUPPORTS OPTIMAL HEALTH

Kidney cleansing is among the best ways to improve overall health, boost energy, detoxify the body, and increase quality of life. In fact, I believe it is now essential. Given the state of the average person’s diet, the lack of proper overall nutrition, and especially the amount of toxicity in our environment (including toxicity in food, water, air, soil, and our homes and offices), there is no reason not to perform kidney cleansing regularly. That is, at least once or twice per year, and preferably once every season (spring, winter, fall, and summer).

Kidney cleansing can be an ongoing part of your lifestyle even after a you’ve completed a periodic cleanse. For example, routinely consuming fresh organic lemonade, watermelon, parsley, garlic, vegetable juices, raw foods, and kidney support herbs (e.g., kidney teas containing herbs like juniper berry, uva ursi leaf, and corn silk).

As I’ve suggested, maintaining healthy kidneys can be aided by avoiding toxins. Read Part Two of the Rejuvenation Program series (see resources below). Avoid or reduce your exposure to kidney toxic foods, liquids, and substances. This includes conventional produce (containing pesticides and GMOs) and artificial ingredients (food colorings, flavorings, preservatives, and sweeteners). Avoidance of these substances reduces your toxic load and supports kidney health.

LIVING WITH RADIATION: PROTECTION STARTS TODAY

UPDATE: January 6, 2014 – My colleague, Mark Sircus, published an article today concerning the status of the Fukushima situation. In his article, Mark states: “A public health official detected increased radiation levels on a California beach showing radiation levels at approximately 500% of normal levels. On the beach is exactly where you do not want to go and it looks like the further from the Pacific Ocean you are the longer you are going to live.”

Mark’s article continues: “Michael Snyder was saying last week, ‘The west coast of the United States is being absolutely fried by radiation from the Fukushima nuclear disaster, and the mainstream media is not telling us the truth about this. Most models display that the western coast and the middle belt of the U.S. will get the brunt of the radiation.'”

In light of the current situation, including recent reports regarding the possible meltdown of Fukushima reactor three, we believe it is important for everyone to familiarize themselves with methods to protect their health against the effects of radiation coming from Fukushima. In August 2013, I published an extensive updated article on the ways in which this can be done and have included it below. UPDATE: August 30, 2013 – Recent critical developments in Fukushima, Japan have revealed the release of massive quantities of radioactive water into the Pacific Ocean. An article published in National Geographic magazine on 8/21/13 provides details concerning the latest radioactive leak. These revelations make it necessary for everyone to remember that effective action can be taken to protect yourself and your loved ones from the damaging effects of released nuclear radiation. I wrote the following article (which includes a radiation protocol) and first published it on the HPDI blog in July 2012. Today’s version is significantly revised and expanded. I include a discussion of Ultimate Protector™ and how its Nrf2 activators help heal DNA damage from ionizing radiation. – Dr. Hank Liers

Since the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami crisis in Japan, I receive many inquiries about emergency preparation, protection from radiation, and detoxification. These questions typically focus on the means to maintain health during catastrophic events. I’m pleased to offer suggestions depending on individual needs. However, my recommendations always start with the HPDI Master Rejuvenation Program. The program is the foundation on which to build and maintain excellent health under all circumstances. It starts well before radiation exposure is an issue.

More recently, it has become clear that the nuclear reactor situation in Fukushima, Japan is actually far worse than has been publicly acknowledged. According to physicist Michio Kaku PhD, the threat from the spent fuel pool in reactor building number four is near the tipping point. A small earthquake, another pipe break, or another explosion could tip it over, and we could have a disaster many times worse than Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986.

Dr. Kaku explains that just in the last few weeks it has been reported that reactors two, three, and four have been shown to be in a very dire situation. Reactor two is completely liquefied, something that’s never been seen in the history of nuclear power. Reactor four, on the other hand, has an even worse problem because it is a spent fuel pond that is totally uncovered because of a hydrogen explosion that took place last year. Dr. Kaku concludes we have a worldwide catastrophe in the making. Unfortunately, the probability is high that this catastrophe may happen.

In view of the above, I have prepared this special adaptation of our Master Rejuvenation Program. It provides insight and practical advice about how you can prepare for such a catastrophe, as well as protect yourself, your family, and your community.

MY SUGGESTED PROGRAM
(ADAPTED FROM HPDI’S MASTER REJUVENATION PROGRAM)

1) COMMITMENT

Your commitment to yourself, family, and community to remain healthy during this potential catastrophe is the crucial first step to being successful. I have observed many naysayers claiming that this event represents the end of humanity. However, there are many sources of wisdom and knowledge in the area of radiation protection that can provide solutions for remaining healthy. I will review some of these below.

One of the critical lessons learned from how people and organizations (including governments) react during crisis is that you must take responsibility for yourself because no one else will do it! This involves your learning about the problem and solutions and implementing your own personal plan. We will support you in this process.

2) PREVENT TOXICITY

With regard to radiation, there are some important issues usually not present in most non-radiation prevention programs. In the situation in Fukushima Japan, radiation from toxins such as iodine-131, cesium-137, strontium-90 and plutonium are the major issue. These radioactive particles blow through the air where they can be inhaled, attach to skin and clothing, fall onto food that is either eaten directly or indirectly from the food chain, and settle on the ground and structures where they accumulate and continue to emit radiation for long periods of time.

It may be wise to have access to the radiation data measured in your locality so that you have some idea of the magnitude of the problem you are facing. In this regard we recommend that you use a computer to visit the following website: http://radiationnetwork.com/. This website, home of the National Radiation Map, depicts environmental radiation levels across the USA, updated in real time every minute. This is the first web site where the average citizen (or anyone in the world) can see what radiation levels are anywhere in the USA at any time.

The first step in this program is to avoid contact with radioactive particles as much as possible. This means that you need to avoid to the extent possible exposure to outside air. I recommend using a mask that can filter out the radioactive particles from inhalation. The clothing you wear is also important; consider wearing long sleeve shirts, hats, and long pants to cover your body. The clothing should be changed immediately upon entering your home and it should be kept in a separate room from normal indoor living activities. Clothing should be washed frequently. I also suggest that you take frequent showers to wash radioactive particles from your body.

Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems should be configured in such a way that all outside air is adequately filtered so that it cannot contaminate your living/working spaces. The filters should be changed as necessary to avoid the excessive buildup of radioactive particles.

Before consumption, all produce and other foods exposed to radiation should be washed and rinsed in vinegar solution and then in baking soda solution so that you avoid eating the radioactive particles to the greatest extent possible. It will be impossible to avoid ingesting some radioactive particles. I therefore recommend taking HPDI’s Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula on a regular basis as long as a radiation risk is present. This formula contains ingredients such as charcoal, bentonite, psyllium, and apple pectin known to latch onto radioactive particles and allow them to pass through the GI tract and into your stools.

3) DETOXIFY

It is well known by healers around the world that a well functioning GI tract is critical for good health. This means the food you ingest is quickly and properly broken down into nutrients that your body needs, and unabsorbed food components and body waste from your liver quickly pass through your bowels. It also means that you maintain healthy intestinal flora (“good” bacteria population). In fact, it is believed by many, that 80% (or more) of human health problems initially arise from improper GI tract function. Commonly, the first step a healer will implement in a program is to cleanse and detoxify the GI tract.

Constipation is an extremely common problem in our society and dealing with this issue is the most important starting item. In this regard, Intestinal Corrective Formula #1 (cathartic formula) should be used to keep your bowels active. I recommend that you start with one capsule just after dinner and increase by one capsule daily until the desired effect is reached (i.e., three bowel movements per day). This product can be purchased from American Botanical Pharmacy (800.437.2362). An alternative/complementary method I recommend for increasing movement of bowels is to use Buffered C powder (one or more heaping teaspoons several times daily) and/or Myo-Mag (three or more capsules several times daily).

Once the bowels are moving correctly, I suggest using HPDI’s Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula. Use this bowel drawing, healing, and detoxification tonic every day to keep your bowel clean. This one-of-a-kind formula powerfully supports the health of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. It cleanses the entire digestive tract by drawing toxins, clearing blockages, and supporting natural movement. It works by coating and adhering to the lining of the intestines. This action allows it to absorb fecal plaques and other debris, soften unhealthy deposits, and sweep them away for elimination in the stool. I strongly recommend that you carefully review and implement many of the recommendations of my protocol Chemical/Environmental Toxicity Syndrome on the HPDI website. Here you will find many specific recommendations and references for further exploration that can help you to refine your program.

4) THE FOOD PROGRAM

I advise consuming as much organic raw food as possible. This includes vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds, and soaked or sprouted beans and whole grains. Eat fresh organic produce, preferably in season and locally grown. It may not be possible to eat even as much as 50% raw organic foods under conditions of radiation exposure. However, it is important nonetheless to consume as much raw, organic, locally grown food as possible. It is important to ascertain whether any fresh produce you eat has been exposed to significant amounts of radiation and to decontaminate it (e.g., by washing), if necessary. I also suggest that you consider growing sprouts from seeds indoors (such as broccoli, clover, alfalfa, etc.)

An interesting finding from Chernobyl is that milk from cows fed grass grown on soil enriched with rock dust contained little or no radiation even though milk of nearby cows fed grass grown on soils not enriched with rock dust contained radiation (see: http://remineralize.org/blog/magazine/from-chernobyl-to-japan-treating-radiation-sickness-with-rock-dust). This finding demonstrates the importance of ingesting foods containing significant amounts of trace minerals. Unfortunately, food (even organic) harvested from land not remineralized may not contain the amounts of trace minerals needed by people for good health. Means of getting obtaining mineralized plant foods include purchasing foods grown biodynamically (see: http://biodynamic-farming.com/) or by growing your own vegetables using rock dust, worm castings/tea, compost, etc. (See: http://www.fertilizeronline.com/rockdust.php).

I strongly suggest that you consume at least four scoops per day (e.g., two scoops in the morning and two scoops in the afternoon or evening) of Rejuvenate!™ Plus, Rejuvenate!™ Berries & Herbs, or original Rejuvenate!™. The RNA in these superfoods is highly effective in regenerating and repairing tissues damaged by radiation. The chlorella and spirulina in most of these superfoods can remove toxic metals (such as Cesium-137, Strontium-90, and Plutonium) from your body. Please consume the following nutritional drink (mix in a blender): blend 16–32 ounces of vegetable juice (made fresh in your juicer) and one scoop of Rejuvenate!™ (any formula). You may add garlic cloves, ginger root, and fresh cayenne peppers for additional therapeutic benefits. Try adding 2–3 capsules of PRO-C™ to the drink.

You should drink 32–64 ounces of fresh vegetable juice daily. Buy a juicer if you don’t already have one (as it can save your life!). I recommend the Green Power twin gear juicer, the Hurom slow juicer, or Breville Elite juicer (all available online).

Drink only purified and/or ionized water (I like the TyentUSA or Jupiter water ionizers) with a pH of about 9.0. If you do not have a water ionizer, you can add 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda per 8 oz water several times daily to raise your pH. You also can alkalinize your body by consuming organic herbal teas (non-caffeine) and vegetable juices. Do not consume milk or milk products (cheese, yogurt, butter), most animal products, alcohol, coffee, or refined sugar. You may find it helpful to drink 8–12 oz of Chia Gel daily. Chia Gel is both hydrating and energizing.

You will enjoy eating (as well as drinking the broth of) “Hank’s Vegetable Soup.” This is a great-tasting addition to your cleansing program. It will flush your system of unwanted salts and acids while giving you concentrated vitamins and minerals.

5) THE BLOODSTREAM AND THE IMMUNE SYSTEM

Take Dr. Schulze’s Detox Formula (tincture) (available from the American Botanical Pharmacy) and Super Echinacea. Use two (2) droppers full (70 drops) of the tonics four (4) times daily. In addition, I recommend that you take Immune-Assist™ (at least six capsules) on a daily basis. Immune-Assist™ is derived from six organically grown medicinal mushrooms and contains over 200 polysaccharides known to improve immune function. It is the best immune system modulator I have found. It can rapidly increase your body’s natural killer cell activity. This is especially important because your immune system must clean up tissues damaged by exposure to radioactive particles.

6) NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENT PROGRAM

It is important to include foundational supplement formulas as essential elements in your nutritional supplements program. Foundational formulas include a therapeutic multivitamin, Vitamin C/antioxidant product (e.g., PRO-C™ and/or Ultimate Protector™), and an essential fats product. These formulas along with high-RNA Rejuvenate!™ superfoods provide the basic nutrients required for the body’s metabolic systems (digestion, energy production, detoxification, enzyme production, etc.) to work properly. We discuss these formulas in detail in our Foundational Supplements Program.

Damage occurs in two ways when people (or animals) are exposed to high levels of radiation (also see: Fukushima Radiation Release is Worse than You Have Been Told: What You Can Do to Protect Yourself): 1) only about 20% of the damage occurs from the direct action of the radioactive particles on the DNA and other cellular structures and 2) the remaining 80% of the damage occurs from oxygen free radicals that occur when the radioactive particles impinge on the water in your body (you are about 60% water).

Using this knowledge, Dr. Atsuo Yanagisawa in Japan found that when individuals are pretreated with Vitamin C at the level of about 10 grams daily along with other antioxidants such as selenium, alpha lipoic acid, glutathione, etc., then they are protected from genetic radiation damage when exposed to large dosages of radiation.

Dr. Yanagisawa also discovered that even after individuals are exposed to large doses of radiation and suffer genetic damage, this genetic damage can be reversed by this same protocol of taking about 10 grams of Vitamin C daily along with other antioxidants. Interestingly, this is the same protocol used by many people to prevent or retard aging. This knowledge is important for anyone exposed to large dosages of radiation, such as could be released if the Fukushima reactor situation worsens. Given this information, I recommend taking PRO-C™, which contains Vitamin C and the other antioxidants (i.e., selenium, r-alpha lipoic acid, glutathione) mentioned above, is an ideal supplement for protection against radiation. Nrf2 is normally bound in the cytoplasm of cells to a protein, however, when an appropriate phytochemical agent attaches to a kinase receptor on the cell wall a phosphate group is released that causes the Nrf2 to be released. These endogenously produced enzymes (such as superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, etc.) then protect the body against ROS, electrophiles, and other toxic agents. A recent study provides robust evidence that Nrf2 activators protect cells from ionizing radiation and induces DNA damage repair through direct binding to the 53BP1 promoter region harboring ARE sequences.

In practical experience, it has been found that a combination of multiple polyphenols works significantly better than single ingredients. In fact, in one experiment it was found that a combination of five ingredients all known to be Nrf2 activators was 18 times more effective than any single ingredient. Furthermore, it was found that this combination of five ingredients was able to increase levels of SOD by 30% and catalase by 56% after 120 days of taking the combination.

Ultimate Protector: NRF2 Activator

Ultimate Protector™ contains polyphenols and Nrf2 activators from 29 different fruits and vegetables. These include Wild Blueberry, Wild Bilberry, Acai, Black Currant Extract, Sweet Cherry, Raspberry, Elderberry, Blackberry, Aronia, Black Soybean Hull Extract, Blue Corn, CoffeeBerry®, Curcumin (standardized extract with 95% curcuminoids from Turmeric), Trans-Resveratrol (98% from Giant Knotweed), Grape Seed, Cranberry, Tart Cherry, Prune, Raspberry Seed, Strawberry, Quercetin, Broccoli, Broccoli Sprouts, Tomato, Kale, Carrot, Brussels Sprouts, Onion, and Spinach.

We recommend Nascent Iodine (20 drops daily or more in divided doses) and Vitamin D3 Plus (5,000–10,000 IU daily) because almost everyone is deficient in iodine and Vitamin D. These nutrients are needed for detoxification, energy production and utilization, immune enhancement, and protection against major illnesses. In the event of a radiation catastrophe, it is likely you will receive less exposure to sunlight and therefore will make less of your own Vitamin D. It will be therefore be important to supplement with adequate amounts of Vitamin D.

Please note that radioactive iodine-131 (eight day half life) is one of the elements released into the upper atmosphere after an event such as a nuclear power plant meltdown. It can be carried great distances on high-speed winds, and then fall into the lower atmosphere, where it can be breathed into the lungs. It can also contaminate crops on the ground and get into your body through food and drink. Your thyroid gland quickly absorbs radioactive iodine. Due to this gland’s tremendous affinity for iodine, it may absorb radioactive iodine in quantities that can injure or even destroy it.

Taking non-radioactive iodine (i.e., Nascent Iodine) before and after exposure can protect your thyroid after exposure to radioactive iodine (as may be experienced through fallout). Non-radioactive iodine blocks radioactive iodine from being taken into the thyroid gland. In this way, your thyroid gland can be protected from injury. Taking non-radioactive iodine before exposure essentially “pre-fills” your thyroid with iodine leaving little or no room for radioactive iodine to be assimilated.

If you are already taking the recommended dose of approximately 20 drops of Nascent Iodine (2%) (0.4 mg/drop) (see above), then your thyroid will be protected. However, depending upon the magnitude of the fallout from a radiation event, it would be wise to increase your Nascent Iodine intake to as high as 60–100 drops daily (in divided doses) both before and after exposure until the danger has passed. If the danger is of a prolonged duration (as would be the case with an explosion of Fukushima reactor four), then Nascent Iodine with its extremely low toxicity seems to be the only logical solution for protection of the thyroid. Nascent Iodine

Myo-Mag and Ubiquinol-50 act as powerful metabolic enhancers that lead to significant increases in ATP (adenosine triphosphate) production in the body. ATP is central to the body’s capacity to function. Myo-Mag provides magnesium and malic acid that directly stimulate aerobic energy production in the body. Ubiquinol is also a very powerful fat-soluble antioxidant that prevents free-radical damage in the body’s fat-soluble compartments, including cell membranes.

The liver is the body’s main organ of detoxification and will surely be taxed in the event of a major radiation event. I recommend Hepa Plus that includes milk thistle extract, alpha lipoic acid and other nutrients that help to regenerate and protect the liver cells. I also recommend that you take NAC (N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine), another key nutrient that supports liver function and is the rate-limiting nutrient in the production of glutathione (the liver’s major detoxifying nutrient).

RADIATION PROTOCOL

Here is a summary of nutritional supplements I recommend taking for a complete program of protection both before and after a catastrophic radiation event:

Mighty Multi-Vite!™: 4 daily (Foundational)

PRO-C™: 12–16 daily (Foundational)

Ultimate Protector™: 6-12 daily (Foundational)

Essential Fats Plus E: 3 daily (Foundational)

Rejuvenate!™ superfoods (2–4 scoops) (Foundational)

Nascent Iodine: 20 drops per day taken between meals before 4 pm (you may need to start with just a few drops and build slowly). The dose will need to be increased to 60–100 drops daily in the event of a major radiation event

Immune-Assist™: 6 caps daily (minimum)

Vitamin D3 Plus: 2 daily for 2 weeks and then 1 daily

Myo-Mag: 3 daily (or more) (build up to bowel tolerance)

Ubiquinol-50: 4 daily

Hepa Plus: 4 daily

NAC (N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine): 4 daily

Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula (1–4 tablespoons daily)

7) TRANSDERMAL MAGNESIUM CHLORIDE

I suggest you take warm baths with 2–4 cups of Ancient Minerals Magnesium Flakes (mostly comprised of magnesium chloride but also includes trace sea minerals) along with 1–2 cups of baking soda. Taking these baths significantly raises your body’s magnesium levels (one of the most important therapies you can do). Magnesium baths allow additional trace minerals to be absorbed into your body helping to block the uptake of radioactive particles and alkalinizing your body (and thereby improving oxygen utilization). Additionally, I suggest that you spray Ancient Minerals Magnesium Oil on your body (1–2 ounces daily) as an alternative means of increasing magnesium levels.

8) LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE

I highly recommend any methods of massage and bodywork and other techniques that will significantly enhance lymphatic drainage (such as Swedish massage) as this can clear the body of toxins created by any radioactive particles! Some other practices I recommend include: skin brushing, walking, using a rebounder, using whole body vibration machines, and taking far infrared saunas.

9) EXERCISE

It is important to exercise every day. I strongly recommend activities such as yoga and tai chi. Exercise supports the body in many ways. It supports circulation of blood (to oxygenate tissues and detoxify) and lymph (which must be circulated via muscle movement or deep breathing). It also increases lung capacity, tones the cardiovascular system, builds bones, reduces stress chemicals, releases growth hormone, and more. I do not recommend you exercise outside during a radiation crisis. Exercising outdoors in such conditions can substantially increase your exposure to radioactive particles.

MAXIMIZE YOUR PROTECTION TO PRESERVE HEALTH

It is important to perform as many of these recommendations, practices, and techniques as possible in order to maximize your benefits. When you incorporate them into your life on a regular basis, you will not only be protected against radiation, but you will also gain other health benefits.
