ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELDS (EMF) AND NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS

What is EMF? EMF stands for “Electromagnetic Fields.” Electromagnetic fields encompass an entire spectrum of waves from extremely low frequencies (ELF) and visible light to ultra-high frequencies, such as cosmic rays (ionizing radiation).

What I refer to as “EMF” is the non-ionizing radiation to which we are exposed from cell phones and cell-phone towers, Wi-Fi, cellular data, Bluetooth, smart meters, computers, solar panel inverters, AC-to-DC transformers, power lines, and signals from other digital devices.

Is EMF harmful? Yes, there is a large body of scientific evidence showing EMF can be extremely harmful. Plenty of evidence has existed for decades. Do a search on PubMed. The harms of EMF are not publicized to consumers, especially by companies profiting from the digital and wireless revolutions.

The problem: every year there are more cell phone towers, Wi-Fi networks, “Smart” meters, and solar panel inverters. Soon California will mandate all new homes must have solar power, which means more EMF. Beyond this, there are millions of 5G antennas coming to your region, as part of the most powerful wireless network ever built.

Most health care professionals don’t know much about EMF and the importance of reducing exposure. However, there are a growing number of physicians who understand the dangers of EMF. They can make suggestions for lowering EMF exposure and may also refer you to EMF mitigation experts.

There are four types of EMF building biologists generally test for in homes: 1) Radiofrequency fields (RF), 2) magnetic fields, 3) electric fields, and 4) electromagnetic interference (EMI) or “dirty electricity.” All four types can cause health issues, so it is important to measure and isolate them so you can take action to reduce each type of field, respectively.

I tested my house and office for all four types of EMF—and found all four of them at high levels. I have since mitigated them to safer levels. I continue to find ways to reduce EMF and my exposures to them.

Ways that various types of EMF cause damage to biological systems:

• DNA Damage – Radiofrequency (RF) radiation induces both single- and double-stranded DNA breaks in human and animal cells. When DNA breaks are not properly repaired, the long-term damage results in adverse health effects.

• Voltage Gated Calcium Channels (VGCC) – EMF opens VGCCs causing cells to be flooded with calcium. This excess calcium disrupts multiple pathways, leading to various negative effects, including increased oxidative stress, disrupted nerve cell communication, and heart-related problems.

• Blood Brain Barrier – EMF can open the blood-brain barrier causing toxins or other harmful substances to enter the brain, and for the brain to leak” substances it requires, such as nutrients or neurotransmitters.

• Melatonin Hormone Reduction – EMF suppresses the production of melatonin, which is the antioxidant hormone responsible for repairing the body during sleep. When the body does not properly repair itself at night, problems can arise from immune-related conditions to premature aging.

• Microbiome Disruption – Just as all cells—including those in our body, are electrical, the organisms in our microbiome are electrical, too. There is evidence to show that our microbiome is harmed by EMF.

These are some of the ways that EMF can harm health. When you add them together, you begin to get a picture showing that EMF can cause significant harm to biological systems. Many scientists have suggested how EMF can contribute to almost any health condition from autism to Alzheimer’s disease.

Certain people, myself included, can immediately feel the effects of EMF exposure. Immediate or short-term effects can vary from fatigue, low-energy, and mental fogginess to head and body pains, and ringing in the ears (tinnitus). Terms used to describe the state of being sensitive to EMF are “Electromagnetic Sensitivity” and “Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity” (EHS).

Persons who suffer from EHS may range from 2% to 7% of the population or higher. Yet, whether or not you are “EHS” or feel effects from EMF exposure, science shows your body remains subject to adverse effects, including oxidative damage. That is, just because you do not feel it, does not mean it is not harmful.

Note: there is evidence that certain frequencies of EMF can support health. These often fall into the category of PEMF or “pulsed electromagnetic fields.” Another example: the Schumann resonances (7.82 Hz – 33.8 Hz), which are natural electromagnetic resonances created by lightning discharges from the ionosphere and the surface of the earth. The Schumann resonances are natural earth frequencies to which humans and all life has been exposed for millions of years.

MY EMF STORY

In my case, I never really noticed any problems until I had a solar panel power system installed on my roof-—on two different homes, one in 2014 and the other in 2017. In both cases, I was exposed for relatively long periods at short distances to smart meters and solar inverters, as well as solar-related Wi-Fi equipment.

Shortly after the first installation, I noticed fatigue, inability to concentrate, and pressure in my head. I did not initially make the connection between how I was feeling and the solar installation, which included a DC to AC inverter and two smart meters. I tried to keep my analog electric meter, but the solar company told me only digital smart meters are compatible with the solar power system.

My symptoms improved when I moved my desk away from the wall on whose opposite side the solar equipment was located. Shortly thereafter, we moved to a different home in our metropolitan area. A few years later, we had solar panels installed on our new house. I hoped to avoid symptoms similar to what I had experience previously. No such luck.

After the second solar installation in 2017, I again experienced fatigue, inability to concentrate, as well as pain in my head. I moved my desk and unplugged the solar company’s dedicated Wi-Fi unit that measures solar power generation. I felt better. But over a period of months I developed increasing low-tone tinnitus (ringing in the ears). At first it sounded like a small plane or a truck engine in the distance. The noise grew louder. Then it rumbled night and day. I realized it wasn’t an engine when I discovered the noise was significantly louder in my right ear. Alarmed, I began the process of eliminating possible causes. I finally eliminated all causes—except for EMF.

I read every book I could find about EMF. I read dozens of books, watched videos on the topic, and spoke to EMF experts. During this period my son chose to research EMF for science fair project. His initial idea was to build something for me (like a tinfoil helmet) to reduce my exposure. That idea evolved into measuring the EMF levels emitted by all electronics in our house.

My son’s science project would go on to regionals in our state. Yet for me, the most important thing was how it contributed to our understanding of EMF. It was a launch pad driving us deeper into research, and led to the implementation of many EMF mitigation strategies. Our entire family benefited from it.

It took months, but what we learned helped us take actions to mitigate EMF exposure. My tinnitus began fading and then diminished significantly so that it is not a daily issue for me. This was empowering for me because I took positive actions that made a difference in my health. The process continues because EMF is not going away. I remain vigilant. Yet, I hope my experience can help you reduce your EMF exposure, or avoid developing EMF sensitivity.

I still use cell phones and other digital devices. But I use them less and in much smarter ways. Ways that reduce my EMF exposure. Due to my research and experience with EMF, my awareness of its dangers is such that my thinking on the topic is forever changed. I can never take EMF safety for granted. That is a good thing.

EMF FROM SMART METERS, CELL PHONES, SOLAR INVERTERS, ETC.

Smart meters and DC-to-AC solar inverters can produce high levels of electromagnetic interference (EMI), which is one form of EMF. For more information on EMI, read Samuel Milham’s Dirty Electricity (see resources section below). After reading that book, I considered the possibility that EMI could be contributing to my problems with EMF.

I learned that any device (like an inverter) that converts DC power (say from solar panels) into AC power (home outlets) can add unwanted forms of electricity into the AC power. Clean (60 Hz) electricity becomes polluted by electromagnetic interference. The higher the levels of this EMI or “dirty” electricity, the greater the amount of health effects.

I obtained a broadband EMI meter from Greenwave to measure dirty electricity in my home. I measured EMI levels with the solar system running at midday. Recommended EMI levels are 25–50 millivolts. Yet, every outlet in the house measured almost 2,000 millivolts (1,986  millivolts to be precise!).

I shut off the solar inverter (disabling it and two smart meters) to measure baseline dirty electricity. EMI levels dropped to less than 200 millivolts! This meant one thing: components of our solar system causing high levels (1700+ millivolts) of dirty electricity.

My first solution was to purchase multiple plug-in Greenwave EMI filters. I installed them in about 25 outlets throughout my home. They reduced EMI significantly, but they did not reduce it much in the outlets nearest to area that houses the breaker box, solar inverter, and smart meters. A few outlets away from that area exhibited stubbornly high EMI (1,500+ millivolts).

After further research, I called Satic USA. Satic is a solar company that understands that EMI can affect people. They have products designed to condition an electrical system to remove dirty electricity. I  purchased a line conditioner (Super Duty Power Perfect Box) from Satic specifically created to clean EMI from photovoltaic (PV) solar systems.

Note: Satic describes its line conditioners primarily as energy saving devices and protectors of electrical equipment. Clean power is more efficient. Yet, clean, conditioned AC power means reduced EMI. Thus, there is a human health component built-in, if you will.

The Power Perfect Box was installed by an electrician near our breaker box. This line conditioner (containing two harmonic rectifiers) removed many unwanted harmonics and transients induced into our homes’ electrical system by the solar inverter and smart meters.

Above all, I felt better. I could focus better. I slept better. So did everyone else in the house. And my tinnitus began to diminish.

I highly recommend obtaining a Power Perfect Box if you have a smart meter, solar power inverter, or dirty electricity (EMI) coming from your utility. Measure baseline dirty electricity in AC outlets using a broadband EMI meter (like Greenwave) after turning off your solar inverter and and smart meters.

Satic makes several types of Power Perfect Box. Which one you need depends on how many harmonic rectifiers your electrical system requires. They also make smaller, lower-cost in-line and plug-in EMF Eliminator devices, which act as high-capacity EMI filters. These provide less protection than a Power Perfect Box, but more than a Greenwave filter. Satic will recommend products based on your unique needs. At Satic’s recommendation, I kept the plug-in Greenwave filters in power outlets throughout my home. Between the line conditioner and the Greenwave filters, EMI now ranges from 15 millivolts to 300 millivolts in most outlets during the day. It is lowest (10–50 millivolts) at night when the solar system is not running.

Note: Many homes only require Greenwave plug-in filters because EMI (dirty electricity) levels are already low to moderate (100-300 millivolts), as measured by a Greenwave meter. However, a residence or office with a typical solar panel installation peaks at about 2,000 millivolts. Thus, a solar-powered home, office, or school may require a dedicated line conditioner to reduce EMI below reductions obtained by plug-in filters.

NOT DONE WITH EMF YET

Another EMF issue arose. It seems my exposure to EMF from the home solar system prior to mitigation had led to a general sensitivity to EMF from other sources. That is, even though I had reduced my exposure to fields relating to the solar panel system and its parts (smart meters, solar inverter, solar-related Wi-Fi equipment), I had nevertheless become more sensitive to EMF from cell phones, cellular phone data, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, vehicle electronics, and other sources.

This sensitivity meant that mitigating dirty electricity (EMI) and reducing the tinnitus, while helpful, would not be sufficient to stop my suffering related to other EMF sources. It would take effort to identify the sources, and then remove or mitigate them.

EMF METERS

Meters are your best friend when it comes to measuring EMF. About the same time I found the Greenwave EMI meter—EMI is just one type of EMF—I obtained three or four meters designed to measure other types of electromagnetic fields.

Some of my favorite meters are the Acoustimeter AM-10 (from EMFields), the Trifield 100XE (from Alpha Labs), and the ME3030B (from Gigahertz Solutions). Each meter can provide different insights into how much EMF exposure you receive from various sources

I began the process of measuring every type of device from iPads to cell phone chargers. I carried meters with me everywhere I went. During his science fair project, I helped my son measure and document readings from EMF sources at multiple distances. This data would be invaluable for my own mitigation efforts.

Overall, EMF levels were far greater than I expected, and from a wider variety of sources not just mobile phones or Wi-Fi routers. For example, wireless toys and cordless phones can be among the worst offenders in the RF frequencies. Even indoor hydroponic systems can generate high levels of dirty electricity.

Using my meters to obtain accurate measurements, I began reducing my exposure to all sources of EMF. The more I reduced EMF exposures, the better I felt. I noticed—and continue to notice—improvements in focus, mental energy, and overall well being.

EMF MITIGATION SOLUTIONS

If my EMF problems are a challenge to solve, then at least there are some upsides. My research has led me to solutions that allow me to heal and avoid symptoms. I am empowered to act upon my knowledge, and to share it.

In many ways, my experience has been a blessing. I am now aware of EMF dangers. While I would not wish anyone to have my experience, I hope that sharing my experience can help even a few people to avoid adverse health effects of EMF.

Here are some actions you can take that have helped me. I recommend you take these actions whether or not you feel symptoms or believe you are not affected by EMF.

• Create a wired Internet network in the home. Computers, laptops, and HDTVs can run on hardwired Ethernet connections. Smart phones and tablets can be hardwired using Ethernet adaptor cords. Use Wi-fi routers infrequently (minimize use), or not at all. Keep routers as far away from living areas as possible.

• Keep smart phones in airplane mode whenever possible. Minimize use of cell phones for calls. Use Air tube headsets and speaker phones whenever possible to provide distance from the device.

• Use an anti-radiation mobile phone case (like SafeSleeve). Avoid using mobile phones in a vehicles like cars and buses (as vehicles act as Faraday cages in which signals just bounce around). Keep away from phone or tablet when downloading data. Turn off Wi-Fi and cellular data on the phone most of the time.

• Never keep mobile phones in pockets or close to the body. Turn phone off or use airplane mode if phone must be kept in proximity to the body.

• Turn off electronics (phones, routers, Bluetooth devices) at night. Keep cell phones and other electronics out of your bedroom. Put your router on timer switch to shut off automatically at 9 or 10 pm.

• Use a landline phone. Yes, landline phone service still exists in most places.

• Obtain a good general EMF meter or two, such as a Trifield, Acoustimer, Cornet, or ME3030B (Gigahertz Solutions). Test your house and your devices.

• Test for electromagnetic interference (EMI) in household outlets using a EMI meter. Install a line conditioner and/or EMI filters (to reduce “dirty electricity”). You can obtain EMI meters and filters from Greenwave or Stetzer.

• Shield smart meters using special anti-radiation materials, like Satic Shield or Radiant Barrier (available from Home Depot). Place shielding on the interior wall opposite the meter. There are also metal meter cages for blocking fields coming from the face and sides of smart meter.

• Consider an in-line conditioner for your electrical system, especially if you have a smart meter or solar panels—or measure significant amounts (300+ millivolts) of dirty electricity on your wiring. • Keep a Faraday bag available for times when you want to block all signals to or from your smart phone or other devices. They are available for less than $20.

The more simple actions I take to reduce EMF, the better I feel. The list of actions I take to reduce EMF exposure grows weekly, it seems. Most of my symptoms have gone away. However, I have no desire to risk them coming back. Whenever possible, I avoid other people using cell phones, reduce time spent in places with Wi-Fi routers, smart meters, cell phone towers, etc.

I have become more sensitive than some of my meters (at least sometimes), so I feel that I am nearly a kind of meter myself in terms detecting the presence and magnitude of electromagnetic fields. Even so, I am often surprised by high EMF readings using my meters. Takeaway: Relying solely on yourself (no matter how sensitive you think you are), is not the best idea.

The most important thing you can do is to obtain a good EMF meter. Measure around your house, your devices, and appliances. Unless you actually have a meter, you will not likely optimize EMF reduction—because you can’t see EMFs. If cost is an issue, certain online stores let you rent EMF meters. Get started today!

BEST SUPPLEMENTS FOR EMF

The first lines of defense against EMF should be increasing distance from EMF sources, and reducing duration of exposure. These make a huge difference for protecting health.

One cannot control all sources of exposure. Neighbors have routers, smart meters, antennas, and other sources of EMF generating electronic pollution (“electrosmog”). Wi-Fi is nearly everywhere these days.

A huge component in EMF defense is nutritional supplements. Why? Because levels of EMF to which we are commonly exposed result in oxidative stress requiring high levels of antioxidants to quench free radicals. These nutrients can be provided by a high-potency multivitamin that provides both optimal amounts (versus minimal amounts) of nutrients, but also proper forms (like coenzyme vitamins) that are most readily assimilated and used by the body. Such forms are immediately used and do not require conversion to usable forms.

If I could only take a single supplement daily, it would be a multivitamin. I personally prefer HPDI’s Mighty Multi-Vite!. But Multi Two actually provides higher levels of important B vitamins.

Multivitamins are too vital not to take daily. Fortunately, you are not limited to taking a single supplement. That is why I put antioxidant and vitamin C formulas at the top of the list for protection against EMF. The truth is, however, that both a multivitamin and antioxidants are essential for foundational nutrition. You need both to ensure optimal protection from EMF. There are a few more critical nutrients you need, as well.

ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS (EFA)

Another important foundational supplement is essential fatty acids (EFA). Essential fats are critical for cellular function, cell membrane health, combating inflammatory processes, and overall health. Essential fats are necessary for cellular health. Yet, because EMF creates problems at the cellular level, it is even more vital to obtain essential fats to help cells function at their best.

People overlook the importance of essential fats. That is, I notice that multivitamins and antioxidants are far more likely to be prioritized, and therefore taken daily. Fair enough, because I prioritize those supplements too. Yet, we neglect essential fats at our peril. That is why I take EFAs daily, too.

IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS OF ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS (EFA)

• Regulate steroid production and hormone synthesis
• Regulate pressure in the eyes, joints, and blood vessels
• Regulate response to pain, inflammation, and swelling
• Mediate Immune Response
• Regulate bodily secretions and their viscosity
• Dilate or constrict blood vessels
• Regulate smooth muscle and autonomic reflexes
• Are primary constituents of cellular membranes
• Regulate the rate at which cells divide
• Necessary for the transport of oxygen from the red blood cells to tissues
• Necessary for proper kidney function and fluid balance
• Prevent red blood cells from clumping together
• Regulate nerve transmission

When by diet or supplementation, you consume the correct ratios and amounts of essential fatty acids, then you allow the EFAs to act in ways critical for these functions. For more detailed information, see Dr. Hank’s article, “The Truth About Essential Fatty Acids” (December 2017).

Essential Fats Plus E EMF

Essential Fats Plus E contains eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) (important essential omega-3 fatty acids), gamma linolenic acid (GLA) (an important essential omega-6 fatty acid), and mixed tocotrienols and tocopherols (Vitamin E).

The EPA and DHA are in the form of triglycerides derived from marine lipids (using patented flash molecular distillation) and the GLA is from cold-pressed borage seed oil. The mixed tocotrienols and tocopherols derive from rice bran oil, and are included in the softgel capsules for antioxidant protection of the polyunsaturated oils.

Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are known to play important roles in the formation of prostaglandins. The prostaglandins are important cellular regulators controlling inflammatory processes and pain in the body.

Fish oils may be useful adjuncts in protocols for 1) Cardiovascular disease, 2) Hypertension, 3) Arthritis and inflammatory disorders, 4) Psoriasis and skin problems, 5) Diabetes mellitus, 6) Depression, and 7) Kidney disease. GLA may be a useful adjunct in protocols for 1) Multiple Sclerosis and 2) Arthritis. Research indicates that in a balanced formula there are synergistic effects between EPA, DHA, and GLA. For example, it is known that EPA inhibits the conversion of GLA into pro-inflammatory (and pain-causing) arachidonic acid.

Because these fatty acids have many double bonds that are prone to oxidation, Vitamin E is included in the forms of mixed tocotrienols and tocopherols. In addition, these forms of Vitamin E have been shown to reduce arterial plaques and enhance blood flow, inhibit thromboxane and platelet aggregation, protect serum lipids from oxidation (including LDL and HDL), reduce carotid stenosis (narrowing) and prevent stroke, trap harmful nitrogenous radicals, act as anti-proliferative agents, and provide powerful oxidative defense for the skin.

Essential fatty acids are considered “essential” for all the reasons described. They are so critical for proper cellular function that not having sufficient essential  fats  (or the proper ratios) can impair important processes in the body. I believe EMF exposure puts additional stress on cells such that essential fats are even more necessary. So take an EFA supplement like Essential Fasts Plus E every day.

HYDROGEN SUPPLEMENTS

Hydrogen supplements can be very helpful for preventing or mitigating oxidative damage by EMF. I have recently written about two hydrogen formulas that support antioxidant defenses: Megahydrate and Active H2 Ultra. (See “Hydrogen Supplements – Active H2 Ultra and Megahydrate“)

MEGAHYDRATE

Megahydrate (powder and capsules) provides H-, or the hydrogen anion, which provides lasting antioxidant protection. It this regard, it is highly effective at quenching free radical (even better than molecular hydrogen), greatly enhances the production of ATP (cellular energy) in the body, retains its antioxidant capacity for extended periods, and is the key unlocking the potential of water as the medium for nutrient replenishment and waste removal at the cellular level.

The active ingredient in Megahydrate is silica hydride. One very important characteristic of the antioxidant capacity of silica hydride is that it is the only antioxidant that does not turn into a free radical (i.e., oxidant) once it has neutralized a free radical by donating its electron. Negatively-charged hydrogen turns into molecular hydrogen gas and/or turns into water.

RESTORE

RESTORE is one of those products that go beyond anything else I’ve seen in terms of what is can do and how it does it. In fact, I recently published an article devoted solely to Restore (see “Restore Gut Health Formula + Video”).

The reason I include RESTORE in my list of top formulas for EMF exposure is because it protects the integrity of the gut barrier or tight junctions, supports the communications system in the gut microbiome, and acts as a fertilizer for the microbiome itself. These are important effects because EMF breaks down tight junctions, interferes with microbiome communications (as gut bacteria use their own weak EMF signals to communicate), and reduces microbiome health.

RESTORE is a soil-derived, scientifically backed mineral supplement that creates a firewall against toxins entering the gut wall. RESTORE helps create a biological environment for “good” gut bacteria to grow and flourish in order to support improvement of overall health.

RESTORE is not a probiotic. It is not a prebiotic. Rather, it is a carbon rich, alkaline liquid, with lignite derived trace organics and essential trace amino acids, that promotes an optimal environment in the gut. With 70% of the immune system located in the gut, this optimal gut environment leads to great gut health.

Research has shown RESTORE to be non-toxic and to support the tight junction cells of the gut lining. Additionally, RESTORE has been shown both in the laboratory and clinically to help support the functioning of the gut barrier and improve gut health. In experiments, toxins like herbicides and gluten have been shown to degrade the gut barrier. RESTORE has been shown to promote the strengthening of the tight junction gut barrier in small and large gut membrane cells for gut health.

One of the main elements in RESTORE is the lignite extract. Lignite comes from decomposed prehistoric matter. As plants decompose, they first form peat, which then turns into humate, then lignite, then leonardite and finally to coal. All of these are rich in carbon. One of the differences between all of these elements is the amount of time and pressure have been applied to them.

OTHER IMPORTANT SUPPLEMENTS MITIGATING EMF EFFECTS

My list of favorite supplements for EMF could be much longer. I will mention two other types of supplements I think can be useful for most people. One is magnesium and the other is C-60 (or Carbon-60).

MAGNESIUM

Magnesium is critical for supporting and enabling at least 400 enzymes in the body that are needed for the vital reactions in cells. EMF can damage or impair enzyme function. Therefore sufficient magnesium is essential for optimal cell function. One known problem is that most people are deficient in magnesium. When enzyme systems lack magnesium, they fail to properly function, resulting in many problems in the body, including lower energy production (ATP) and deficient metabolism.

Magnesium also balances calcium in cells. When EMF causes voltage gated calcium channels (VGCC) to open flooding cells with calcium, the presence of magnesium may help because one of the functions of magnesium is preventing cellular calcium imbalances. Not to mention the role of magnesium in energy production—as energy is required to pump excess calcium out of cells.

One of my favorite magnesium products is MYO-MAG. MYO-MAG is an advanced, synergistic magnesium formula that provides therapeutic levels of magnesium, plus nutrients that support the body’s utilization of magnesium.

MYO-MAG provides magnesium in the form of malate and diglycinate, as well as Vitamins B1, B2, and B6 (including coenzyme forms of these vitamins). The formula is buffered with a small amount of magnesium carbonate, and includes some manganese for mineral balance.

MYO-MAG therefore is a highly effective oral magnesium supplement with benefits that include less fatigue and greater energy, improved metabolic functions, cardiovascular support, nutrition for muscles, reduced spasms or cramps, help for migraine headaches, and many others.

The formula not only supports metabolism, but also cellular energy production (ATP) and optimal cellular function. It allows for rapid uptake and absorption of easily assimilated forms of magnesium. It also provides critical nutrients supporting energy production in the body.

Because MYO-MAG rapidly boosts magnesium levels, individuals usually notice greater physical and mental energy, reduced fatigue, and often a greater sense of overall well being.

MYO-MAG contains ingredients participating in the production of ATP. One vegetarian capsule contains 100 mg of magnesium and 440 mg of l-malic acid. Vitamins B1 and B2 are included both in standard and phosphorylated forms. Also included are Vitamin B6 in its phosphorylated form only, manganese (because high levels of magnesium can deplete the body of it), magnesium carbonate (a malic acid buffer), and glycine as the carrier for a portion of the magnesium and for the manganese. CARBON-60

The structure of the Fullerene allows for a large number of electrons to be held and repeatedly donated for the purpose of quenching free radicals. I will be talking a lot more about Carbon-60 in coming months. Suffice it to say that the research is showing that C-60 may be the future of antioxidant nutrition.

CONCLUSION

Few people have paid much attention to the dangers of EMF until recently. There is growing awareness that EMF contributes to health problems, as well as the mechanisms by which EMF damages the body. Given the rise in health conditions likely to be related to EMF exposure, it makes sense to take action now, rather than unnecessarily risking harmful effects of exposures.

There are many actions you take to protect yourself and your family. These include turning off Wi-Fi, putting cell phones on airplane mode, shielding smart meters (or keeping your analog meters), increasing distance from EMF sources, and reducing duration of exposure.

Taking nutritional supplements providing good levels of antioxidant nutrients and supporting metabolic functions makes a lot of sense, too. Supplements have helped me be healthier and recover faster from EMF exposures. They likely can help you and yours do the same.

THE NEED FOR IODINE SUPPLEMENTATION

The Need for Iodine Supplementation

(OMNS, June 12, 2017) Feeling tired, having low energy or depression, gaining weight, memory problems, having dry skin, dry mouth, or immune system issues? There is good chance your body needs iodine supplementation. Why iodine? Because this essential to human health element has been singled out as dangerous, for several obscure reasons, and it has been gradually eliminated from our diet, and even worse, replaced by its antagonist, bromine. This trend has been termed, iodophobia (1). It is a cause of widely occurring hypothyroidism in many developed countries.

Iodine: How Much?

Iodine deficiency is associated with (2, 3, 4):

  • Fibrocystic breast disease leading to breast cancer and stomach cancer
  • Goiter (enlarged thyroid)
  • Mental issues from reduced alertness, lowered IQ, autism to cretinism, lack of iodine for the fetus leads to cretinism, and in milder cases to autism and ADHD
  • Slow metabolism, leading to tiredness, sluggishness, fatigue, apathy, depression, and insomnia
  • Inability to produce saliva, dry skin, and lack of sweating
  • Lack of optimal detoxification, especially of bromides, fluorides, and heavy metals
  • Sensitivity to temperature changes, and cold hands and feet
  • Muscle pain, fibrosis, and fibromyalgia
  • Erectile dysfunction, infertility and miscarriages, and low sex drive
  • Overweight
  • High blood pressure, and increased incidence of heart attacks and strokes

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations has published probable safe upper limits for dietary intake of iodine (5). They range from 150 micrograms (mcg) per kilogram (kg) per day in newborn infants to 30mcg/kg/day in adults. That is 2 milligrams (2,000 micrograms) daily for a 146-pound adult. The safe upper limit is higher during pregnancy and lactation (40 mcg/kg/day).

Treatments for Hypothyroidism

The simplest method to deal with an underactive thyroid is proper supplementation with iodine, called orthoiodosupplementation. If the thyroid is damaged, then supplementation with thyroid hormones, thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3, the main biologically active hormone) may be necessary. Supplementation (6). with these hormones should be done under close supervision of a medical professional. However, supplementation with inorganic iodine is generally much safer, as the body “knows” how much T4 and T3 need to make. There are also drugs that change physiology of iodine metabolism, but this subject is beyond the scope of this article. Pharmaceutical companies pressure doctors to avoid inexpensive orthoiodosupplementation, so you won’t likely get a prescription for inexpensive Lugol’s solution from a mainstream practitioner.

One caveat to supplementation with iodine is the autoimmune illness called Hashimoto’s disease, or chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis, which is one of the potential causes of hypothyroidism. Unfortunately, when hypothyroidism is diagnosed, the possibility that Hashimoto’s disease underlies this condition has not always been properly tested. Therefore, Hashimoto’s disease has often been misdiagnosed. Doctors usually treat this condition with hormone replacement therapy, and some believe that excessive iodine intake may trigger it in susceptible people (7). Always ask your doctor if iodine supplements are right for you.

History of Iodine Usage and “Iodophobia”

This subject has been covered in detail by Dr. Guy E. Abraham (8,9,10). The iodine element was discovered in 1811 by B. Courtois. In 1850–1853 A. Chatin noted that goiter and cretinism are rare in geological zones rich in iodine and frequent where iodine is in short supply, and that goiter can be prevented by iodine supplementation. In 1895 E. Baumann proposed that iodine is the active element in the thyroid gland.

By the time Bauman identified large concentrations of iodine in the thyroid gland in 1895, pharmaceutical and apothecary preparations containing iodine, excluding thyroid extracts, were widely used as a panacea.

To quote Kelley: (11) “The variety of diseases for which iodine was prescribed in the early years is astonishing – paralysis, chorea, scrofula, lacrimal fistula, deafness, distortions of the spine, hip-joint disease, syphilis, acute inflammation, gout, gangrene, dropsy, carbuncles, whitlow, chilblains, burns, scalds, lupus, croup, catarrh, asthma, ulcers, and bronchitis – to mention only a few. Indeed, tincture of iodine, iodoform, or one of the iodides, was applied to almost every case that resisted the ordinary routine of practice; and between 1820 and 1840 there appeared a remarkable series of essays and monographs testifying to the extraordinary benefits to be achieved by this new and potent remedy.”

Unfortunately, these monographs have virtually disappeared from US medical libraries. In the mid-1800s, iodine treatments of some diseases called for ingestion of gram (1,000 mg) amounts per day. However, most treatments were from 5 to 50 mg daily. The recommended daily amount of iodine by Dr. G. E. Abraham is 0.1-0.3 ml Lugol containing 12.5-37.5 mg elemental iodine. This is the amount of iodine needed for whole body sufficiency, based on a recently reported iodine/iodide-loading test (12). Thyroid gland sufficiency for iodide is achieved with a lower dose.

Lugol's iodine supplementation

The first iodophobic authority emerged in early 1900s. Prof. T. Kochler reported that he suffered from overactive thyroid following ingestion of iodide (just a single individual case, not a statistical research study!) Despite this, the number of applications grew. In an International Index published in 1956, and devoted exclusively to iodine pharmaceuticals, no less than 1,700 approved iodine-containing products were listed. In 1948 Wolff and Chaikoff published that a serum inorganic iodide level at a concentration of 1 µM blocks (one micromolar) the synthesis of thyroid hormones, resulting in hypothyroidism and goiter in rats. But this conclusion was erroneous as they even did not measure thyroid hormones in the rats studied, and of course, hypothyroidism and goiter were not observed in those rats. Many organic forms of iodinated drugs were quite poisonous. Unfortunately, medical establishment did not make a distinction between organic and inorganic forms of iodine, and iodophobia became more popular.

Decades ago, iodine was added to bread so that one slice contained 150 mcg of iodine (the current recommended daily allowance). In the 1980s, bromine replaced iodine in bread. Since bromide is an antagonist to iodine (it is goitrogenic), it worsened iodine deficiency in the US. Moreover, a big push to remove salt from our diet (the only grocery item still supplemented with iodine) exacerbated the problem. The only developed nation that resisted iodophobia is Japan, statistically the healthiest and longest living nation on the planet. Their average daily consumption of iodine is around 5 mg, with various reports ranging from 1 mg to 18 mg. In a study of reported daily iodine intake versus total number of clinical symptoms, an intake of approximately 1 mg per day correlated with the lowest number of reported symptoms, that is, the highest level of health (13). Recent popularization of bromides in our food supplies likely increased this amount.

According to Dr. Abraham, (14) “proper amounts of iodine in the food supply should be considered one of a nation’s greatest assets. Removing iodine from the food supply is a major mistake. Supplying a daily intake of iodine sufficient for the whole body (100-400 times the RDA) gives protection against goitrogens and radioactive iodine/iodide fallout; improves immune functions, resulting in an adequate defense system against infection; decreases singlet oxygen formation which is the major cause of oxidative damage to DNA and macromolecules, resulting in an anticarcinogenic effect in every organ; results in a detoxifying effect by increasing urinary excretion of the toxic metals lead, mercury, cadmium, and aluminum, as well as the goitrogens fluoride and bromide; normalizes hormone receptor functions resulting in improved response to thyroid hormones both endogenous and exogenous; and results in better control of blood sugar in diabetic patients; stabilizes cardiac rhythm, obviating the need for the toxic sustained release form of iodine, amiodarone; and normalizes blood pressure without medication in hypertensive patients. Iodine deficiency is the major cause of cognitive impairment, worldwide.”

The Iodine-Cancer Connection

The body requires iodine to metabolize both omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. A substance called delta-iodolactone, a derivative of arachidonic acid, which is produced in the thyroid gland and breast tissue, prostate, colon, and the nervous system, is a regulator of a process called cellular apoptosis (“cell death”). Ascorbic acid is required to stimulate intracellular hydrogen peroxide synthesis that, in turn, provides the energy to make iodine free radicals necessary for this reaction. When the level of delta-iodolactone is high enough, the process of apoptosis can then kill cancer cells. (15)

Unfortunately, the recommended daily allowance (RDA) for iodine — about 150 mcg per day — will not allow delta-iodolactone to be efficiently formed in the thyroid gland. The thyroid requires higher iodine concentrations to efficiently produce it. Researchers have found that 100 times the RDA amount of iodine is optimal to produce delta-iodolactone. That equates to taking about 15 mg of iodine per day (15,16). These findings are important because they imply that there are some biochemical reactions that require much larger amounts of iodine than the current RDA. The mechanism by which delta-iodolactone induces cell death may be an important pathway for curing some types of cancer.

Forms of Iodine

Inorganic iodine exists in 6 oxidative states, from -1 to +7. The most reduced form (with most electrons) is iodide (I); an example is potassium iodide. The diatomic form of elemental iodine I2, has no electrical charge. Monoatomic iodine also has no electrical charge, but is unstable and highly reactive (free radical, labeled as an I with a dot, I* ). It can be produced by exposing I2 to ultraviolet light. Electric and magnetic fields won’t do it, as is sometimes incorrectly suggested. More oxidized forms of iodine are: hypoiodite (I+1), iodite (I+3), iodate (I+5), and periodate (I+7). The body’s metabolism may convert (reduce) these forms to biochemically available iodide, but at the cost of depleting its antioxidants. All forms of positively charged iodine are relatively poisonous, with established lethal doses (LD50) in the range of 35 to 2100 mg/kg. Elemental iodine (I2) and iodides (I) are non-poisonous. However, a bad “antiseptic” non-culinary taste of iodine (I2) suggests to our senses that this is not so good choice for supplementation.Nascent iodine supplementation

Despite that adverse taste, almost all the research on iodine supplementation has been done using Lugol’s Solution (17). The original solution is called 5% Lugol’s Iodine, but in reality it consists of 12.5% iodide/iodine or (I/[I3]) ions. Two drops of Lugol’s Solution (0.1 ml) contain 12.5 mg iodine/iodide mix. Iodine tablets that are a solid form of Lugol’s solution, were created to mask the taste and make the doses more precise for dietary supplementation.

I should mention a few points about Edgar Cayce’s atomidine. This famous visionary wrote several articles about the best form of iodine supplement (18). Some claim that this was iodine trichloride, but that cannot be true as this compound is toxic by ingestion and damaging to mucous membranes. It decomposes to ICl and poisonous gas Cl2 at 77 degrees C and also in water at room temperature (19). Most likely Cayce’s atomidine was simply a 1% iodine solution (I2) in 95% ethanol. I am surprised that there are educated people, even medical doctors who claim that “elemental monoatomic iodine” preparations (Atomidine, Nascent Iodine etc.) are the best forms of iodine supplements. May be it has something to do with efficient marketing? Elemental Iodine (I2) is soluble in glycerin. Replacement of ethanol with glycerol indeed makes these supplements more consumption-friendly, so they are sold by some vendors as superior products to Cayce’s ethanol-formulated one. Personally, I think glycerol-based I2 supplements are inferior to iodides; however, they are excellent antiseptics.

To defend the validity of Cayce’s vision, in thyroid, I ion and amino acid tyrosine react through a short intermediate step by forming monoatomic I* free radical (selenium and hydrogen peroxide are involved) to make monoiodotyrosine. Diiodotyrosine is formed analogical way, and finally, two of these molecules combine to produce thyroxine. All those steps are carried by the enzyme thyroid peroxidase, which is normally attached to the protein thyroglobulin. So, yes, monoatomic iodine I* exists in human bodies, and it directly reacts with tyrosine, but no, it wouldn’t be healthy to consume iodine free radicals as their high reactivity would prevent safe transport throughout the body.

In the mid-1930s the thyroid hormone thyroxine became available on the market. This was a blessing for people who had damaged their thyroid. Unfortunately, doctors started to prescribe this hormone to just about anybody with hypothyroidism, thinking that they can control better thyroid hormone levels than our bodies can. And, the “iodine is iodine, no matter what form” mentality became a dangerous trend, because most medical professionals do not fully appreciate the difference between the raw nutrient (iodine) and its product (hormone).

The pharmaceutical industry came up with lots of organic forms of iodine (NB: organic, meaning that iodine is bound to a carbon-atom-containing molecule and NOT meaning it’s grown in a pesticide-free environment), all relatively toxic and certainly not to be used without strict medical supervision. Only inorganic forms of iodine, I and I2, are safe for supplementation (20,21). Further, high doses of these supplements should still be supervised by your doctor.

Iodine Uses

Iodine plays critical role in human metabolism. Many researchers believe the RDA value of 150 mcg for iodine is too low, especially when this element is commonly substituted with competing element bromine. Therefore, the main use of iodine in dietary supplementation is to enable optimal thyroid function. There are a number of medical conditions where iodine is either essential or helpful. For best results, iodine/iodide should be supplemented with selenium, magnesium, copper (there is usually enough of it in tap water as copper is widely used in plumbing), vitamin B2 (riboflavin) and B3 (niacin). Ask your doctor before taking any iodine supplements, especially if you are on medications.

Elemental iodine (I2) is antibacterial and antifungal, so iodine or iodine/iodide solutions are commonly used topically to sterilize wounds, or internally to fight infections, such as vaginitis and sore throat, and also to sanitize drinking water. Because iodine is antibacterial, drinking it may cause friendly bacterial flora to suffer and result in diarrhea and stomach cramps (the same applies to Lugol’s solution, but to a lesser extent as it contains iodides as well).

Ingestion of iodides prevents the incorporation of destructive radioactive iodine into the body (mainly by the thyroid) in case of nuclear accidents. It also may help flushing already incorporated radioactive iodine from the thyroid, although too much iodine inhibits secretion of T4/T3 from the gland.

Common-Sense Cautions

Overdosing any of the iodine supplements can lead to swollen salivary glands, metallic aftertaste and skin rash and itching (that are usually due to rapid process of detoxification from heavy metals fluorides and bromides), faster heartbeat or palpitations and diarrhea. When supplementation is stopped, these symptoms will usually disappear quickly, often within one day. Iodine stabilizes thyroid hormone production, so it is an adaptogen, but in rare cases, such as acquired allergy to iodine (Hashimoto’s disease), it may actually misbalance it. In some cases, iodine supplementation can cause hypothyroidism, so it’s important to get checked by your doctor to make sure that your thyroid function is not worsened by supplementation. Some authors advising caution are Alan Christianson (22), Jeffrey Dach, (23) and Alan Gaby (24). Testing of levels of thyroid hormones along with testing and supplementation of mineral nutrients such as selenium, zinc, copper, magnesium calcium, and other trace minerals may prevent problems in cases where high doses of iodine/iodide might tend to cause Hashimoto’s disease. Inorganic Iodine Availability

The most common form of iodine supplement is Lugol’s solution (17). The original solution contains 5% of iodine and 10% iodide. Solid pill forms of Lugol’s solution are sold under several brand names. Potassium iodide (KI), my favorite iodine supplement, is available as tablets as well. Various products with kelp or other seaweed extracts contain iodides as well. Check the label when you buy as some of them are very diluted.

It is difficult to find inexpensive elemental iodine (I2) solution in alcohol. You can buy iodine crystals online and make the proper solution by yourself very easily (using either alcohol or glycerol). The monoatomic iodine concept is simply a marketing gimmick that has been created to inflate the price several fold. Note that if the monoatomic claims were really true, few would really want to drink free radicals, the only monoatomic form that exists. Iodine free radicals are not transported freely in our bodies because they are too reactive. Elemental iodine preparations, including iodine dissolved in glycerol, may be helpful products for external antiseptic use rather than a supplement.

Another form of iodine supplement includes a mixture of algae and thyroid extract in glycerin, water and ethanol. This is likely not harmful because it contains T3 and T4 only in very small amounts, and the recommended serving size is also small. Other complex formulae that contain elemental iodine are a useful antiseptic, but not a good supplement. Iodine trichloride should be avoided as a supplement because it is too toxic.(19)

Summary

The established RDA allowance for iodine (150 mcg/day) is inadequate for many individuals. In order to maintain optimum health, adults need 2-5 mg of iodide daily. Actually, this is in line with the upper safe limit of dietary intake of iodine established by FAO (30 mcg/kg/day). In case of a dysfunctional thyroid or other illnesses, such as fibrocystic breast disease or cancer, 15-50 mg daily may be needed. Ask your doctor about the alternatives to hormone therapy or taking iodine-containing organic drugs, because inexpensive orthoiodosupplementation would usually not be his/her first choice.

The best and safest form of iodine supplementation for a healthy adult is iodide. Iodides are naturally produced in larger quantities by various seaweeds.

Please consult your doctor about iodine supplementation, as in your particular case it may be contraindicated.

WONDERS OF MOLECULAR HYDROGEN

MOLECULAR HYDROGEN: BACKGROUND

Molecular hydrogen, also known as “diatomic hydrogen,” is a colorless, tasteless, and odorless gas.

Elemental hydrogen (H) is the most abundant element in the universe constituting 75% of its mass. Yet, it is absent on earth in its monoatomic form, being present in water, and inorganic and organic compounds. Molecular hydrogen is found in the earth’s atmosphere at less than one part per million.

The science regarding benefits to health of molecular hydrogen (H2) has advanced rapidly in recent years thanks to the pioneering efforts of research scientists around the globe.

Now hydrogen science is moving quickly beyond theory to practical applications. Moreover, new products exist allowing medical professionals and consumers to leverage the health benefits of hydrogen.

For decades, diatomic molecular hydrogen was generally considered an “inert” gas. That is perhaps the primary reason that molecular hydrogen has been recognized as a therapeutic molecule only recently.

Indeed, science has known about the health benefits of molecular hydrogen as early as 1798. Yet, as noted, for most of modern history the belief persisted that hydrogen was inert in the body. It was only in the late 20th century (ca. 1975) that it gained the attention of medical researchers, and only in the past 10 years has evidence for the health effects of molecular hydrogen gained critical mass in the scientific literature.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF MOLECULAR HYDROGEN (H2)

• Molecular hydrogen reduces oxidative stress as a selective antioxidant and by maintaining homeostatic levels of glutathione, superoxide dismutase, catalase,  and other free-radical scavenging nutrients.

HOW MOLECULAR HYDROGEN WORKS

According to the Molecular Hydrogen Foundation, there are three ways molecular hydrogen exerts positive health effects.

1.  Molecular hydrogen easily diffuses into subcellular compartments where it scavenges cytotoxic oxygen radicals, thereby protecting DNA, RNA, and proteins against oxidative stress.

2.  Molecular hydrogen triggers activation or upregulation of additional antioxidant enzymes (e.g., glutathione, superoxide dismutase, catalase, and others) and/or cytoprotective proteins of the body.

3.  Molecular hydrogen may be a novel signaling molecule that alters cell signaling, cell metabolism, and gene expression. This may explain its apparent anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, and anti-apoptotic (or anti-cell death) effects.

MOLECULAR HYDROGEN IS SAFE

Molecular hydrogen exhibits great safety, and it is regarded as safe for use in the body. It is shown no toxicity even in high concentrations.

Safety standards are already established for high concentrations of molecular hydrogen for inhalation because high-pressure H2 gas is used in deep-water diving gas mixtures to prevent decompression sickness.

Notably, H2 gas combusts only at temperatures higher than 527 °C, and it explodes by chain reaction with oxygen (O2) only in the range of Hconcentration (4–75%, vol/vol).

Molecular hydrogen can be used for medical applications safely by several ingestion methods including inhalation of 1–4% hydrogen gas, which exhibits great effectiveness.

All these factors mean that molecular hydrogen is safe, easy-to-use, and effective for therapeutic purposes.

USING MOLECULAR HYDROGEN

Methods for consuming molecular hydrogen include inhalation, oral ingestion of hydrogen-infused water, injection of hydrogen saline, and direct diffusion (eye drops, baths, cosmetics, etc.).

An advantage of inhaled H2 gas is that is acts rapidly. In this respect, may be suitable for defense against acute oxidative stress.

It has been shown that inhalation of 3–4% hydrogen (H2) gas reaches a plateau at approximately 10–20 μM in the arterial and venous blood in about 20 minutes. This is shown not to affect any physiological parameters (e.g., blood pressure), suggesting no adverse effects.

According to the Molecular Hydrogen Foundation, the consensus is that drinking H2-rich water is the easiest, and often the most effective, method for obtaining molecular hydrogen although it does not provide as many hydrogen molecules to the body as other methods.

Some studies show consuming H2-infused water to be more effective than inhalation or increasing intestinal H2 production via lactulose administration.

Another advantage of drinking hydrogen infused water is that it allows gastric induction of ghrelin, which is mediated via activation of beta 1 adrenergic receptors.

Above all, drinking hydrogen-infused water is easy to do, and convenient as you can drink it at home or while traveling.

HYDROGEN-INFUSED WATER

Inhalation of molecular hydrogen gas may be impractical for continuous H2 consumption in daily life. In contrast, solubilized H2 (hydrogen-infused water) is a portable, easily administered, and safe means to ingest H2.

H2 can be dissolved in water up to 0.8 mM (1.6 mg/L) under atmospheric pressure at room temperature without changing pH.

Hwater can be made by several methods: infusing H2 gas into water under pressure, electrolyzing water to producing H2, and reacting magnesium metal or its hydride with water.

Notably, H2 penetrates glass or plastic walls of vessels in a short time, yet aluminum containers retain hydrogen gas for a long time.

Water ionizers produce hydrogen gas via electrolysis. This method produces hydrogen concentrations from less than 0.05 ppm to more than 2.5 ppm. Typically 0.1 to 0.7 ppm hydrogen is produced, yet most companies manufacturing water ionizers neither know the concentration produced nor understand the significance of hydrogen for health.

In this regard, depending upon the production method much of the water containing molecular hydrogen exhibits a negative oxygen reduction potential (ORP). Yet, ORP is only a general indication of hydrogen production and is not a measurement of its concentration.

A second method of producing hydrogen-rich water by electrolysis is by infusion. In this method, hydrogen is directly infused into filtered water within a machine.

Another convenient method to generate molecular hydrogen is to add alkali-earth metals to water. Magnesium metal in commonly used for this purpose. This method allows for the production of high concentrations of molecular hydrogen that are generally near saturation (1.6 ppm), and therefore less water needs to be consumed by individuals drinking it.

Magnesium sticks and tablets/capsules are available (some of which are placed in water and others that can be consumed directly) that rapidly produce 2–4 ppm molecular hydrogen concentration. Like electrolysis, adding metals to water also increased the pH of water because they reduce the concentration of H+ ions.

Other methods exist that can produce supersaturated concentrations of molecular hydrogen with or without alteration of water pH. Advantages of these methods include having to drink a fraction of the amount of water in order to obtain an equal amount of molecular hydrogen.

Drinking water containing molecular hydrogen is probably the easiest and most cost-effective means for most persons to obtain hydrogen.

Hydrogen-infused water can be consumed using tablets, prepared H2 beverages, or ionized water.

MOLECULAR HYDROGEN FROM YOUR MICROBIOME

Certain types bacteria in the intestinal tract produce hydrogen gas from non-digestible fibers, which may explain how fiber-rich diets reduce inflammation, and exert cardiovascular and other health benefits.

Diets low in dietary fiber from fruits and vegetables, or a decrease in microbiome diversity could potentially reduce production of molecular hydrogen. This could exert adverse effects on health.

The presence (or absence) of a diverse and robust microbiome may be one of the most significant factors in terms of how much hydrogen can be generated in the body. Most people today do not create the levels of molecular hydrogen in their digestive tracts that humans in earlier time periods generated largely because due to modern diets and less than optimal microbiome health.

Factors that influence or reduce microbiome health and diversity include antibiotic use, imbalanced diet, lack of certain fiber-rich vegetables in the diet, and consumption of herbicides, pesticides, and GMOs (that include glyphosate) that harm microbial populations and cause “leaky gut”.

As knowledge increases regarding ways we can support a healthy microbiome, the biological significance of hydrogen historically produced in our digestive tracts will be better understood.

BENEFIT TODAY FROM MOLECULAR HYDROGEN

The clinical applications of molecular hydrogen are impressive. One of the great advantages of molecular hydrogen infused water is that  it is easy to consume it, or make it in your own home or wherever you happen to be.

SCIENTIFIC STUDIES ON MOLECULAR HYDROGEN

Beneficial biological effects and the underlying mechanisms of molecular hydrogen – comprehensive review of 321 original articles

Abstract
Therapeutic effects of molecular hydrogen for a wide range of disease models and human diseases have been investigated since 2007. A total of 321 original articles have been published from 2007 to June 2015. Most studies have been conducted in Japan, China, and the USA. About three-quarters of the articles show the effects in mice and rats. The number of clinical trials is increasing every year. In most diseases, the effect of hydrogen has been reported with hydrogen water or hydrogen gas, which was followed by confirmation of the effect with hydrogen-rich saline. Hydrogen water is mostly given ad libitum. Hydrogen gas of less than 4% is given by inhalation. The effects have been reported in essentially all organs covering 31 disease categories that can be subdivided into 166 disease models, human diseases, treatment-associated pathologies, and pathophysiological conditions of plants with a predominance of oxidative stress-mediated diseases and inflammatory diseases. Specific extinctions of hydroxyl radical and peroxynitrite were initially presented, but the radical-scavenging effect of hydrogen cannot be held solely accountable for its drastic effects. We and others have shown that the effects can be mediated by modulating activities and expressions of various molecules such as Lyn, ERK, p38, JNK, ASK1, Akt, GTP-Rac1, iNOS, Nox1, NF-κB p65, IκBα, STAT3, NFATc1, c-Fos, and ghrelin. Master regulator(s) that drive these modifications, however, remain to be elucidated and are currently being extensively investigated.

Abstract
Molecular hydrogen (H2) has been accepted to be an inert and nonfunctional molecule in our body. We have turned this concept by demonstrating that H2 reacts with strong oxidants such as hydroxyl radical in cells, and proposed its potential for preventive and therapeutic applications. H2 has a number of advantages exhibiting extensive effects: H2 rapidly diffuses into tissues and cells, and it is mild enough neither to disturb metabolic redox reactions nor to affect signaling reactive oxygen species; therefore, there should be no or little adverse effects of H2. There are several methods to ingest or consume H2; inhaling H2 gas, drinking H2-dissolved water (H2-water), injecting H2-dissolved saline (H2-saline), taking an H2 bath, or dropping H2-saline into the eyes. The numerous publications on its biological and medical benefits revealed that H2 reduces oxidative stress not only by direct reactions with strong oxidants, but also indirectly by regulating various gene expressions. Moreover, by regulating the gene expressions, H2 functions as an anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic, and stimulates energy metabolism. In addition to growing evidence obtained by model animal experiments, extensive clinical examinations were performed or are under investigation. Since most drugs specifically act to their targets, H2 seems to differ from conventional pharmaceutical drugs. Owing to its great efficacy and lack of adverse effects, H2 has promising potential for clinical use against many diseases.

Abstract
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) in its various forms has emerged as a major problem for modern society. Acute TBI can transform into a chronic condition and be a risk factor for neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, probably through induction of oxidative stress and neuroinflammation. Here, we examined the ability of the antioxidant molecular hydrogen given in drinking water (molecular hydrogen water; mHW) to alter the acute changes induced by controlled cortical impact (CCI), a commonly used experimental model of TBI. We found that mHW reversed CCI-induced edema by about half, completely blocked pathological tau expression, accentuated an early increase seen in several cytokines but attenuated that increase by day 7, reversed changes seen in the protein levels of aquaporin-4, HIF-1, MMP-2, and MMP-9, but not for amyloid beta peptide 1-40 or 1-42. Treatment with mHW also reversed the increase seen 4 h after CCI in gene expression related to oxidation/carbohydrate metabolism, cytokine release, leukocyte or cell migration, cytokine transport, ATP and nucleotide binding. Finally, we found that mHW preserved or increased ATP levels and propose a new mechanism for mHW, that of ATP production through the Jagendorf reaction. These results show that molecular hydrogen given in drinking water reverses many of the sequelae of CCI and suggests that it could be an easily administered, highly effective treatment for TBI.

The evolution of molecular hydrogen: a noteworthy potential therapy with clinical significance

Abstract
Studies on molecular hydrogen have evolved tremendously from its humble beginnings and have continued to change throughout the years. Hydrogen is extremely unique since it has the capability to act at the cellular level. Hydrogen is qualified to cross the blood brain barrier, to enter the mitochondria, and even has the ability to translocate to the nucleus under certain conditions. Once in these ideal locations of the cell, previous studies have shown that hydrogen exerts antioxidant, anti-apoptotic, anti-inflammatory, and cytoprotective properties that are beneficial to the cell. Hydrogen is most commonly applied as a gas, water, saline, and can be applied in a variety of other mediums. There are also few side effects involving hydrogen, thus making hydrogen a perfect medical gas candidate for the convention of novel therapeutic strategies against cardiovascular, cerebrovascular, cancer, metabolic, and respiratory diseases and disorders. Although hydrogen appears to be faultless at times, there still are several deficiencies or snares that need to be investigated by future studies. This review article seeks to delve and comprehensively analyze the research and experiments that alludes to molecular hydrogen being a novel therapeutic treatment that medicine desperately needs.

Molecular hydrogen as an emerging therapeutic medical gas for neurodegenerative and other diseases

Abstract
Effects of molecular hydrogen on various diseases have been documented for 63 disease models and human diseases in the past four and a half years. Most studies have been performed on rodents including two models of Parkinson’s disease and three models of Alzheimer’s disease. Prominent effects are observed especially in oxidative stress-mediated diseases including neonatal cerebral hypoxia; Parkinson’s disease; ischemia/reperfusion of spinal cord, heart, lung, liver, kidney, and intestine; transplantation of lung, heart, kidney, and intestine. Six human diseases have been studied to date: diabetes mellitus type 2, metabolic syndrome, hemodialysis, inflammatory and mitochondrial myopathies, brain stem infarction, and radiation-induced adverse effects. Two enigmas, however, remain to be solved. First, no dose-response effect is observed. Rodents and humans are able to take a small amount of hydrogen by drinking hydrogen-rich water, but marked effects are observed. Second, intestinal bacteria in humans and rodents produce a large amount of hydrogen, but an addition of a small amount of hydrogen exhibits marked effects. Further studies are required to elucidate molecular bases of prominent hydrogen effects and to determine the optimal frequency, amount, and method of hydrogen administration for each human disease.

Abstract

BACKGROUND:
Mitochondria are the major source of oxidative stress. Acute oxidative stress causes serious damage to tissues, and persistent oxidative stress is one of the causes of many common diseases, cancer and the aging process; however, there has been little success in developing an effective antioxidant with no side effect. We have reported that molecular hydrogen has potential as an effective antioxidant for medical applications [Ohsawa et al., Nat. Med. 13 (2007) 688-694].

SCOPE OF REVIEW:
We review the recent progress toward therapeutic and preventive applications of hydrogen. Since we published the first paper in Nature Medicine, effects of hydrogen have been reported in more than 38 diseases, physiological states and clinical tests in leading biological/medical journals. Based on this cumulative knowledge, the beneficial biological effects of hydrogen have been confirmed. There are several ways to intake or consume hydrogen, including inhaling hydrogen gas, drinking hydrogen-dissolved water, taking a hydrogen bath, injecting hydrogen-dissolved saline, dropping hydrogen-dissolved saline into the eyes, and increasing the production of intestinal hydrogen by bacteria. Hydrogen has many advantages for therapeutic and preventive applications, and shows not only anti-oxidative stress effects, but also has various anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic effects. Preliminary clinical trials show that drinking hydrogen-dissolved water seems to improve the pathology of mitochondrial disorders.

MAJOR CONCLUSIONS:
Hydrogen has biological benefits toward preventive and therapeutic applications; however, the molecular mechanisms underlying the marked effects of small amounts of hydrogen remain elusive.

GENERAL SIGNIFICANCE:

Abstract
Acute oxidative stress induced by ischemia-reperfusion or inflammation causes serious damage to tissues, and persistent oxidative stress is accepted as one of the causes of many common diseases including cancer. We show here that hydrogen (H(2)) has potential as an antioxidant in preventive and therapeutic applications. We induced acute oxidative stress in cultured cells by three independent methods. H(2) selectively reduced the hydroxyl radical, the most cytotoxic of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and effectively protected cells; however, H(2) did not react with other ROS, which possess physiological roles. We used an acute rat model in which oxidative stress damage was induced in the brain by focal ischemia and reperfusion. The inhalation of H(2) gas markedly suppressed brain injury by buffering the effects of oxidative stress. Thus H(2) can be used as an effective antioxidant therapy; owing to its ability to rapidly diffuse across membranes, it can reach and react with cytotoxic ROS and thus protect against oxidative damage.

LIVING WITH RADIATION: PROTECTION STARTS TODAY

UPDATE: January 6, 2014 – My colleague, Mark Sircus, published an article today concerning the status of the Fukushima situation. In his article, Mark states: “A public health official detected increased radiation levels on a California beach showing radiation levels at approximately 500% of normal levels. On the beach is exactly where you do not want to go and it looks like the further from the Pacific Ocean you are the longer you are going to live.”

Mark’s article continues: “Michael Snyder was saying last week, ‘The west coast of the United States is being absolutely fried by radiation from the Fukushima nuclear disaster, and the mainstream media is not telling us the truth about this. Most models display that the western coast and the middle belt of the U.S. will get the brunt of the radiation.'”

In light of the current situation, including recent reports regarding the possible meltdown of Fukushima reactor three, we believe it is important for everyone to familiarize themselves with methods to protect their health against the effects of radiation coming from Fukushima. However, my recommendations always start with the HPDI Master Rejuvenation Program. The program is the foundation on which to build and maintain excellent health under all circumstances. It starts well before radiation exposure is an issue.

More recently, it has become clear that the nuclear reactor situation in Fukushima, Japan is actually far worse than has been publicly acknowledged. According to physicist Michio Kaku PhD, the threat from the spent fuel pool in reactor building number four is near the tipping point. A small earthquake, another pipe break, or another explosion could tip it over, and we could have a disaster many times worse than Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986.

Dr. Kaku explains that just in the last few weeks it has been reported that reactors two, three, and four have been shown to be in a very dire situation. Reactor two is completely liquefied, something that’s never been seen in the history of nuclear power. Reactor four, on the other hand, has an even worse problem because it is a spent fuel pond that is totally uncovered because of a hydrogen explosion that took place last year. Dr. Kaku concludes we have a worldwide catastrophe in the making. Unfortunately, the probability is high that this catastrophe may happen.

In view of the above, I have prepared this special adaptation of our Master Rejuvenation Program. It provides insight and practical advice about how you can prepare for such a catastrophe, as well as protect yourself, your family, and your community.

MY SUGGESTED PROGRAM
(ADAPTED FROM HPDI’S MASTER REJUVENATION PROGRAM)

1) COMMITMENT

Your commitment to yourself, family, and community to remain healthy during this potential catastrophe is the crucial first step to being successful. I have observed many naysayers claiming that this event represents the end of humanity. However, there are many sources of wisdom and knowledge in the area of radiation protection that can provide solutions for remaining healthy. I will review some of these below.

One of the critical lessons learned from how people and organizations (including governments) react during crisis is that you must take responsibility for yourself because no one else will do it! This involves your learning about the problem and solutions and implementing your own personal plan. We will support you in this process.

2) PREVENT TOXICITY

With regard to radiation, there are some important issues usually not present in most non-radiation prevention programs. In the situation in Fukushima Japan, radiation from toxins such as iodine-131, cesium-137, strontium-90 and plutonium are the major issue. These radioactive particles blow through the air where they can be inhaled, attach to skin and clothing, fall onto food that is either eaten directly or indirectly from the food chain, and settle on the ground and structures where they accumulate and continue to emit radiation for long periods of time.

It may be wise to have access to the radiation data measured in your locality so that you have some idea of the magnitude of the problem you are facing. In this regard we recommend that you use a computer to visit the following website: http://radiationnetwork.com/. This website, home of the National Radiation Map, depicts environmental radiation levels across the USA, updated in real time every minute. This is the first web site where the average citizen (or anyone in the world) can see what radiation levels are anywhere in the USA at any time.

The first step in this program is to avoid contact with radioactive particles as much as possible. This means that you need to avoid to the extent possible exposure to outside air. I recommend using a mask that can filter out the radioactive particles from inhalation. The clothing you wear is also important; consider wearing long sleeve shirts, hats, and long pants to cover your body. The clothing should be changed immediately upon entering your home and it should be kept in a separate room from normal indoor living activities. Clothing should be washed frequently. I also suggest that you take frequent showers to wash radioactive particles from your body.

Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems should be configured in such a way that all outside air is adequately filtered so that it cannot contaminate your living/working spaces. The filters should be changed as necessary to avoid the excessive buildup of radioactive particles.

Before consumption, all produce and other foods exposed to radiation should be washed and rinsed in vinegar solution and then in baking soda solution so that you avoid eating the radioactive particles to the greatest extent possible. It will be impossible to avoid ingesting some radioactive particles. I therefore recommend taking HPDI’s Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula on a regular basis as long as a radiation risk is present. This formula contains ingredients such as charcoal, bentonite, psyllium, and apple pectin known to latch onto radioactive particles and allow them to pass through the GI tract and into your stools.

3) DETOXIFY

It is well known by healers around the world that a well functioning GI tract is critical for good health. This means the food you ingest is quickly and properly broken down into nutrients that your body needs, and unabsorbed food components and body waste from your liver quickly pass through your bowels. It also means that you maintain healthy intestinal flora (“good” bacteria population). In fact, it is believed by many, that 80% (or more) of human health problems initially arise from improper GI tract function. Commonly, the first step a healer will implement in a program is to cleanse and detoxify the GI tract.

Constipation is an extremely common problem in our society and dealing with this issue is the most important starting item. In this regard, Intestinal Corrective Formula #1 (cathartic formula) should be used to keep your bowels active. I recommend that you start with one capsule just after dinner and increase by one capsule daily until the desired effect is reached (i.e., three bowel movements per day). This product can be purchased from American Botanical Pharmacy (800.437.2362). An alternative/complementary method I recommend for increasing movement of bowels is to use Buffered C powder (one or more heaping teaspoons several times daily) and/or Myo-Mag (three or more capsules several times daily).

Once the bowels are moving correctly, I suggest using HPDI’s Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula. Use this bowel drawing, healing, and detoxification tonic every day to keep your bowel clean. This one-of-a-kind formula powerfully supports the health of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. It cleanses the entire digestive tract by drawing toxins, clearing blockages, and supporting natural movement. It works by coating and adhering to the lining of the intestines. This action allows it to absorb fecal plaques and other debris, soften unhealthy deposits, and sweep them away for elimination in the stool. Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula neutralizes and removes hundreds of toxins, including heavy metals (e.g., mercury and lead) and radioactive particles. 4) THE FOOD PROGRAM

I advise consuming as much organic raw food as possible. This includes vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds, and soaked or sprouted beans and whole grains. Eat fresh organic produce, preferably in season and locally grown. It may not be possible to eat even as much as 50% raw organic foods under conditions of radiation exposure. However, it is important nonetheless to consume as much raw, organic, locally grown food as possible. It is important to ascertain whether any fresh produce you eat has been exposed to significant amounts of radiation and to decontaminate it (e.g., by washing), if necessary. I also suggest that you consider growing sprouts from seeds indoors (such as broccoli, clover, alfalfa, etc.)

An interesting finding from Chernobyl is that milk from cows fed grass grown on soil enriched with rock dust contained little or no radiation even though milk of nearby cows fed grass grown on soils not enriched with rock dust contained radiation (see: http://remineralize.org/blog/magazine/from-chernobyl-to-japan-treating-radiation-sickness-with-rock-dust). This finding demonstrates the importance of ingesting foods containing significant amounts of trace minerals. Unfortunately, food (even organic) harvested from land not remineralized may not contain the amounts of trace minerals needed by people for good health. Means of getting obtaining mineralized plant foods include purchasing foods grown biodynamically (see: http://biodynamic-farming.com/) or by growing your own vegetables using rock dust, worm castings/tea, compost, etc. (See: http://www.fertilizeronline.com/rockdust.php).

I strongly suggest that you consume at least four scoops per day (e.g., two scoops in the morning and two scoops in the afternoon or evening) of Rejuvenate!™ Plus, Rejuvenate!™ Berries & Herbs, or original Rejuvenate!™. The RNA in these superfoods is highly effective in regenerating and repairing tissues damaged by radiation. The chlorella and spirulina in most of these superfoods can remove toxic metals (such as Cesium-137, Strontium-90, and Plutonium) from your body. Please consume the following nutritional drink (mix in a blender): blend 16–32 ounces of vegetable juice (made fresh in your juicer) and one scoop of Rejuvenate!™ (any formula). You may add garlic cloves, ginger root, and fresh cayenne peppers for additional therapeutic benefits. Try adding 2–3 capsules of PRO-C™ to the drink.

You should drink 32–64 ounces of fresh vegetable juice daily. Buy a juicer if you don’t already have one (as it can save your life!). I recommend the Green Power twin gear juicer, the Hurom slow juicer, or Breville Elite juicer (all available online).

Drink only purified and/or ionized water (I like the TyentUSA or Jupiter water ionizers) with a pH of about 9.0. If you do not have a water ionizer, you can add 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda per 8 oz water several times daily to raise your pH. You also can alkalinize your body by consuming organic herbal teas (non-caffeine) and vegetable juices. Do not consume milk or milk products (cheese, yogurt, butter), most animal products, alcohol, coffee, or refined sugar. You may find it helpful to drink 8–12 oz of Chia Gel daily. Chia Gel is both hydrating and energizing.

You will enjoy eating (as well as drinking the broth of) “Hank’s Vegetable Soup.” This is a great-tasting addition to your cleansing program. It will flush your system of unwanted salts and acids while giving you concentrated vitamins and minerals.

5) THE BLOODSTREAM AND THE IMMUNE SYSTEM

Take Dr. Schulze’s Detox Formula (tincture) (available from the American Botanical Pharmacy) and Super Echinacea. Use two (2) droppers full (70 drops) of the tonics four (4) times daily. In addition, I recommend that you take Immune-Assist™ (at least six capsules) on a daily basis. Immune-Assist™ is derived from six organically grown medicinal mushrooms and contains over 200 polysaccharides known to improve immune function. It is the best immune system modulator I have found. It can rapidly increase your body’s natural killer cell activity. This is especially important because your immune system must clean up tissues damaged by exposure to radioactive particles.

6) NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENT PROGRAM

It is important to include foundational supplement formulas as essential elements in your nutritional supplements program. Foundational formulas include a therapeutic multivitamin, Vitamin C/antioxidant product (e.g., PRO-C™ and/or Ultimate Protector™), and an essential fats product. These formulas along with high-RNA Rejuvenate!™ superfoods provide the basic nutrients required for the body’s metabolic systems (digestion, energy production, detoxification, enzyme production, etc.) to work properly. We discuss these formulas in detail in our Foundational Supplements Program.

Damage occurs in two ways when people (or animals) are exposed to high levels of radiation (also see: Fukushima Radiation Release is Worse than You Have Been Told: What You Can Do to Protect Yourself): 1) only about 20% of the damage occurs from the direct action of the radioactive particles on the DNA and other cellular structures and 2) the remaining 80% of the damage occurs from oxygen free radicals that occur when the radioactive particles impinge on the water in your body (you are about 60% water).

Using this knowledge, Dr. Atsuo Yanagisawa in Japan found that when individuals are pretreated with Vitamin C at the level of about 10 grams daily along with other antioxidants such as selenium, alpha lipoic acid, glutathione, etc., then they are protected from genetic radiation damage when exposed to large dosages of radiation.

Dr. Yanagisawa also discovered that even after individuals are exposed to large doses of radiation and suffer genetic damage, this genetic damage can be reversed by this same protocol of taking about 10 grams of Vitamin C daily along with other antioxidants. Interestingly, this is the same protocol used by many people to prevent or retard aging. This knowledge is important for anyone exposed to large dosages of radiation, such as could be released if the Fukushima reactor situation worsens. Given this information, I recommend taking PRO-C™, which contains Vitamin C and the other antioxidants (i.e., selenium, r-alpha lipoic acid, glutathione) mentioned above, is an ideal supplement for protection against radiation. A new nutritional supplement that complements PRO-C™ in its action against radiation is the Ultimate! Protector™ Formula. Ultimate Protector™ is a cell protection formula that provides high levels of non-GMO Vitamin C, a full spectrum of high ORAC5.0 antioxidants, and multiple sources of protective Nrf2 activators from polyphenols.

Ultimate Protector

Nrf2 is normally bound in the cytoplasm of cells to a protein, however, when an appropriate phytochemical agent attaches to a kinase receptor on the cell wall a phosphate group is released that causes the Nrf2 to be released. The Nrf2 then migrates into the cell nucleus and by binding to genomic antioxidant responsive element (ARE) sequences causes antioxidant enzymes to be fabricated and released. These endogenously produced enzymes (such as superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, etc.) then protect the body against ROS, electrophiles, and other toxic agents. A recent study provides robust evidence that Nrf2 activators protect cells from ionizing radiation and induces DNA damage repair through direct binding to the 53BP1 promoter region harboring ARE sequences.

In practical experience, it has been found that a combination of multiple polyphenols works significantly better than single ingredients. In fact, in one experiment it was found that a combination of five ingredients all known to be Nrf2 activators was 18 times more effective than any single ingredient. Furthermore, it was found that this combination of five ingredients was able to increase levels of SOD by 30% and catalase by 56% after 120 days of taking the combination.

Ultimate Protector: NRF2 Activator

Ultimate Protector™ contains polyphenols and Nrf2 activators from 29 different fruits and vegetables. These include Wild Blueberry, Wild Bilberry, Acai, Black Currant Extract, Sweet Cherry, Raspberry, Elderberry, Blackberry, Aronia, Black Soybean Hull Extract, Blue Corn, CoffeeBerry®, Curcumin (standardized extract with 95% curcuminoids from Turmeric), Trans-Resveratrol (98% from Giant Knotweed), Grape Seed, Cranberry, Tart Cherry, Prune, Raspberry Seed, Strawberry, Quercetin, Broccoli, Broccoli Sprouts, Tomato, Kale, Carrot, Brussels Sprouts, Onion, and Spinach.

These nutrients are needed for detoxification, energy production and utilization, immune enhancement, and protection against major illnesses. In the event of a radiation catastrophe, it is likely you will receive less exposure to sunlight and therefore will make less of your own Vitamin D. It will be therefore be important to supplement with adequate amounts of Vitamin D.

Please note that radioactive iodine-131 (eight day half life) is one of the elements released into the upper atmosphere after an event such as a nuclear power plant meltdown. It can be carried great distances on high-speed winds, and then fall into the lower atmosphere, where it can be breathed into the lungs. It can also contaminate crops on the ground and get into your body through food and drink. Your thyroid gland quickly absorbs radioactive iodine. Due to this gland’s tremendous affinity for iodine, it may absorb radioactive iodine in quantities that can injure or even destroy it.

Taking non-radioactive iodine (i.e., Nascent Iodine) before and after exposure can protect your thyroid after exposure to radioactive iodine (as may be experienced through fallout). Non-radioactive iodine blocks radioactive iodine from being taken into the thyroid gland. In this way, your thyroid gland can be protected from injury. Taking non-radioactive iodine before exposure essentially “pre-fills” your thyroid with iodine leaving little or no room for radioactive iodine to be assimilated.

If you are already taking the recommended dose of approximately 20 drops of Nascent Iodine (2%) (0.4 mg/drop) (see above), then your thyroid will be protected. However, depending upon the magnitude of the fallout from a radiation event, it would be wise to increase your Nascent Iodine intake to as high as 60–100 drops daily (in divided doses) both before and after exposure until the danger has passed. If the danger is of a prolonged duration (as would be the case with an explosion of Fukushima reactor four), then Nascent Iodine with its extremely low toxicity seems to be the only logical solution for protection of the thyroid. Nascent Iodine

Myo-Mag and Ubiquinol-50 act as powerful metabolic enhancers that lead to significant increases in ATP (adenosine triphosphate) production in the body. ATP is central to the body’s capacity to function. Myo-Mag provides magnesium and malic acid that directly stimulate aerobic energy production in the body. Ubiquinol is also a very powerful fat-soluble antioxidant that prevents free-radical damage in the body’s fat-soluble compartments, including cell membranes.

The liver is the body’s main organ of detoxification and will surely be taxed in the event of a major radiation event. I recommend Hepa Plus that includes milk thistle extract, alpha lipoic acid and other nutrients that help to regenerate and protect the liver cells. I also recommend that you take NAC (N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine), another key nutrient that supports liver function and is the rate-limiting nutrient in the production of glutathione (the liver’s major detoxifying nutrient).

RADIATION PROTOCOL

Here is a summary of nutritional supplements I recommend taking for a complete program of protection both before and after a catastrophic radiation event:

Mighty Multi-Vite!™: 4 daily (Foundational)

PRO-C™: 12–16 daily (Foundational)

Ultimate Protector™: 6-12 daily (Foundational)

Essential Fats Plus E: 3 daily (Foundational)

Rejuvenate!™ superfoods (2–4 scoops) (Foundational)

Nascent Iodine: 20 drops per day taken between meals before 4 pm (you may need to start with just a few drops and build slowly). The dose will need to be increased to 60–100 drops daily in the event of a major radiation event

Immune-Assist™: 6 caps daily (minimum)

Vitamin D3 Plus: 2 daily for 2 weeks and then 1 daily

Myo-Mag: 3 daily (or more) (build up to bowel tolerance)

Ubiquinol-50: 4 daily

Hepa Plus: 4 daily

NAC (N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine): 4 daily

Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula (1–4 tablespoons daily)

7) TRANSDERMAL MAGNESIUM CHLORIDE

I suggest you take warm baths with 2–4 cups of Ancient Minerals Magnesium Flakes (mostly comprised of magnesium chloride but also includes trace sea minerals) along with 1–2 cups of baking soda. Taking these baths significantly raises your body’s magnesium levels (one of the most important therapies you can do). Magnesium baths allow additional trace minerals to be absorbed into your body helping to block the uptake of radioactive particles and alkalinizing your body (and thereby improving oxygen utilization). Additionally, I suggest that you spray Ancient Minerals Magnesium Oil on your body (1–2 ounces daily) as an alternative means of increasing magnesium levels.

8) LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE

I highly recommend any methods of massage and bodywork and other techniques that will significantly enhance lymphatic drainage (such as Swedish massage) as this can clear the body of toxins created by any radioactive particles! Some other practices I recommend include: skin brushing, walking, using a rebounder, using whole body vibration machines, and taking far infrared saunas.

9) EXERCISE

It is important to exercise every day. I strongly recommend activities such as yoga and tai chi. Exercise supports the body in many ways. It supports circulation of blood (to oxygenate tissues and detoxify) and lymph (which must be circulated via muscle movement or deep breathing). It also increases lung capacity, tones the cardiovascular system, builds bones, reduces stress chemicals, releases growth hormone, and more. I do not recommend you exercise outside during a radiation crisis. Exercising outdoors in such conditions can substantially increase your exposure to radioactive particles.

MAXIMIZE YOUR PROTECTION TO PRESERVE HEALTH

It is important to perform as many of these recommendations, practices, and techniques as possible in order to maximize your benefits. When you incorporate them into your life on a regular basis, you will not only be protected against radiation, but you will also gain other health benefits. These include faster healing and recovery, and better overall health. In fact, you will be pleased both by how quickly you can feel better, and by how effectively you can protect and maintain excellent health. NASCENT IODINE: RADIATION PROTECTOR, DETOXIFIER & HEALTH BOOSTER

It has been known since the tsunami disaster that the magnitude of radiation emissions and leaks from Fukushima has been downplayed and underreported by TEPCO and the Japanese government. That appears to be changing.

Current reports point to extremely large radiation leaks beginning in August 2013 and which appear to be ongoing. These continuing radiation leaks are massive and add immeasurably to the radioactive flows traveling across the Pacific ocean to the west coast of the US. In light of these facts, we at HPDI have updated our Radiation Protocol (originally published in May 2012) and re-published it in our blog.

As part of our radiation protocol, we recommend individuals take Nascent Iodine. Nascent iodine will help protect health from the current high levels of radiation, as well as from higher levels if the situation in Fukushima deteriorates further, leading to additional radiation discharges into the water and air.

NASCENT IODINE FOR RADIATION PROTECTION

We recommend Nascent Iodine (20 drops daily or more in divided doses). Almost everyone is deficient in iodine. The body rapidly absorb radioactive iodine unless it receive an adequate supply of non-radioactive iodine. Therefore, a supply of high-quality, non-toxic iodine can be critical for protection from radiation. Because iodine is also important for detoxification, energy production and utilization, immune enhancement, and protection against major illnesses, Nascent Iodine is an ideal means to obtain it.

Iodine-131 decays into Iodine-129, which has a half-life of 16 million years and a total life of 150 million years. Therefore, while iodine-131 gets much of the attention due to its immediate health impacts, iodine-129 is the form that will remain with us long after releases of iodine-131. After contaminating the ocean, iodine-131 contaminates the air through evaporation, and then contaminates the land via precipitation.

Beyond the fact that iodine-131 decays into iodine-129, the total amount of iodine-129 released by the Fukushima plant is about 30 times greater than releases of iodine-131. Fortunately, taking Nascent Iodine protects human health from both types of radioactive iodine. That is, the means for protecting health from these different types of radiation is the same: take non-radioactive, non-toxic Nascent Iodine.

Iodine is critical for thyroid function because it is a component of  thyroid hormones T3 (triiodothyronine) and T4 (tetraiodothyronine).
