GUT HEALTH – EFFECTS OF GLYPHOSATE AND ANTIBIOTICS

We did this not only because there is a documented increase in gut-related health issues, but also because we hear about gut health issues from our clients and resellers. They desire effective means for solving the gut health problems prevalent today.

One of the biggest gut health problems we see today is leaky gut syndrome. The syndrome goes by other names and encompasses various symptoms. These symptoms broadly encompass food allergies, sensitivities, and intolerances.

Yet, the symptoms can also include low energy, fatigue, immune disorders, as well as obesity and blood sugar issues. It also encompasses celiac disease and certain brain disorders.

In fact, most of these gut-related conditions and symptoms today go beyond what was historically meant by “leaky gut syndrome.” Today leaky gut and the conditions associated with it largely seem to relate to a combination of factors, including modern agricultural methods, use of antibiotics and certain other pharmaceuticals, and toxic chemicals in foods and the environment.

TOXIC INDUSTRIAL AGRICULTURE

Agriculture was not so long ago an organic affair. Chemical fertilizers were unknown, soils were healthier, and crops were at least non-GMO.

Things got worse with the introduction of chemical fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides. The green revolution of the 1960s brought more changes, including the rise of monoculture crops and more dependence on chemicals.

Chemicals used in agriculture destroy soil microbes. These chemicals induce plant growth without simultaneously improving the quality of the soil. Consequently, the result is depletion of nutrients in soils. This has been proven by measurable declines in vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients in food crops.

When soils are continuously depleted and are nutrients are not replaced or augmented (as in Biodynamic agriculture, for example), soils have fewer nutrients. Eventually crops grown in these soils will be nutrient-poor and therefore not optimal for health. Nutrient declines in soils are significant, and soils continue to be depleted of nutrients.

The combination of chemical fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides has created an unsustainable system of agriculture that does not produce nutritious food crops. Herbicides such as 2,4-D and atrazine, and pesticides like DDT (which remains in soils) are examples of chemicals that can significantly harm human and environmental health.

The introduction of genetically modified (GMO) crops has accelerated the negative effects of industrialized farming methods. This is especially true in terms of the lowering soil-quality and adversely impacting soil microbes, reducing nutrient levels in crops, and both directly and indirectly harming human health.

GMO crops have not been properly tested for safety. The dangers of GMO crops are significant. Bt corn is a crop whose genetic modification is associated directly with gut health issues (see charts below). Bt corn was created to damage the intestines of insects, but that also damages the health of the human gut.

When combined with specialized herbicides designed for use on GMO crops, the dangers of GMOs increase significantly. The primary herbicide used for GMO crops is glyphosate, which is a mineral chelator, endocrine disruptor, and biocide with antibiotic effects that kill bacteria (beneficial and harmful) indiscriminately leading to an imbalanced human microbiome.

Glyphosate appears to be associated with an increasing number of adverse health conditions partly because many health problems can be caused or exacerbated by nutrient deficiencies, endocrine disruption, microbiome imbalances, and other toxic effects. These health conditions include leaky gut syndrome which not only may result from an imbalanced microbiome, but also from a loosening of the necessarily tight junctions in the gut wall that protect us from exposure to foreign proteins not unlike the blood-brain barrier protects our brain.

TOXIC GLYPHOSATE

Use of the herbicide glyphosate has increased dramatically in recent years. Glyphosate is the primary (but by no means the only) ingredient in the herbicide RoundUp.

Glyphosate kills plants including weeds, and it does this partly by acting as a mineral chelator that prevents the uptake of nutrients by plants. This starves the plant until it dies. However, plants genetically modified to withstand glyphosate still contain fewer nutrients and are therefore less nutritious.

Moreover, any glyphosate you consume acts as a chelator in your body that  blocks your uptake of minerals and nutrients. This will not be good, especially if the GMO foods you consume are already nutrient deficient. Glyphosate also interferes with how you uptake and process nutrients (like manganese) in ways that guarantee depletion in the body, as will be discussed further below).

A major reason for increasingly larger applications of glyphosate on crops is the rise of glyphosate-resistant “super weeds.” This was not predicted to happen, but clearly it is happening. Thus, the “solution” to the development of super weeds has been simply to apply more glyphosate. This means greater amounts of poison in crops, and of course, greater profits for the herbicide company.

The problem is that glyphosate is extremely toxic. If there were a perfect storm scenario for herbicide use, then glyphosate would be one component of it. Many scientists are concerned about it, including former genetic engineers like Thierry Vrain, who now advocates growing and consuming organic foods (see more below).

Increased use of glyphosate will in turn accelerate the rise of super-resistant weeds, and accelerate damage to the health of those who consume it.

Not to mention the unknown health risks of the genetically modified (GMO) crops themselves, which are sprayed with glyphosate. How would you be able to tell which is more damaging to health, the toxins embedded in GMO crops or the sprays that soak both GMO and non-GMO crops alike. None have been properly tested, or test results are hidden or suppressed.

Beyond all this, non-GMO crops like wheat, oats, barley, beans, and nuts are routinely sprayed with glyphosate at the end of the season as a means to dry these crops to make harvesting easier. So much for trying to eat verified non-GMO.

You’re likely getting a lot of glyphosate in your diet…unless you eat 100% organically grown foods that are not contaminated with glyphosate by direct spraying, spraying for the purposes of drying, or from drift related to nearby spraying.

And with increased levels of spraying to apply more of this herbicide, the likelihood is you’re getting glyphosate not only from foods, but also from a contaminated water supply (wells, rivers, streams), and from rainfall (with more than 65% of rain samples testing positive).

GLYPHOSATE ADVERSELY IMPACTS HEALTH

A noteworthy article on the topic of glyphosate and genetically modified organisms (GMO) is N.L.  Swanson’s “Genetically Modified Organisms and the Deterioration of Health in the United States” (2013). This was originally published as a series of articles on the Seattle Examiner website.

Scientists may disagree on the level of veracity of the article, and quibble over the finer points of statistical correlation. Meanwhile, people are getting sicker, not healthier. And that is the point.

If indeed glyphosate is impacting human health adversely at even a fraction of the levels argued by Swanson, then individuals should reduce their consumption of GMO foods as much as possible to avoid health consequences.

Foods containing GMOs should be clearly labeled, like they are in many other countries. Consumers have a right to know if foods contain GMO. There is no valid objection to labeling since many other (and far less harmful) ingredients in foods are labeled. This is a transparency issue. It is the least consumers deserve.

In July 2016, the US enacted the so-called DARK Act, which requires labels for GMO products. However, this law is far weaker than the Vermont law that preceded it. The US law preempts state laws. It represents a poor attempt to address consumers’ desire for labeling of GMO foods. It offers no standard labeling requirements, nor any means to enforce compliance for companies that fail to label. And while some may consider the US law progress for consumers, consider that in Europe GMO labeling went into effect back in 1997 – nearly 20 years ago.

In addition, proper scientific testing of the health effects of GMOs and in particular the herbicide glyphosate, as well as the adjuvants and surfactants contained in glyphosate-containing products—and how these ingredients act synergistically—must be carried out. Consumers should never be guinea pigs when science is available that can protect them and help them make informed decisions.

Not unlike tobacco companies that suppressed and downplayed the harm of their products, today’s purveyors of agricultural chemicals (and especially GMOs and glyphosate) are not particularly concerned about the adverse health effects of their products. In fact, it appears to be just the opposite, as studies indicating harmful effects frequently have been suppressed.

Several of the studies used to indicate safety of GMOs were short-term studies (three months) conducted by companies who make and sell the products themselves without peer review or release of data. Whereas longer-term, independent studies indicate probable harm to health, therefore showing the precautionary principle was disregarded in approving GMOs for human consumption.

In order for consumer to protect themselves, GMO labeling is a minimum measure. Most nations already require clear labeling or ban GMOs.

AVOID ANTIBIOTICS IN FOODS AND ELSEWHERE

The use of antibiotics in livestock results in a tainted food supply. This means that foods ingested contain antibiotics that damage and destroy beneficial microbes in the human gut. This contributes to reduced microbiome diversity and paves the way for a takeover by harmful bacteria.

Then there is the overuse of antibiotics in human medicine. The use of antibiotics significantly damages microbiome health and diversity. The importance of the microbiome for human health is such that antibiotic use that kills beneficial bacteria and imbalances the gut flora is proven to reduce overall health and can contribute to major health problems throughout life. This is especially true when antibiotics are used in childhood when the microbiome is establishing itself.

Glyphosate is not considered an antibiotic per se, but it exerts antibiotic-like effects. That is, glyphosate destroys microbes by acting on the Shikimate pathway, and therefore acts like an antibiotic. This pathway is not present in human beings, but is present in plants and most microbes important for the health of the human gut.

Glyphosate interferes with the synthesis by gut bacteria of aromatic amino acids (including tyrosine and tryptophan) as well as methionine. This leads to shortages in critical neurotransmitters such as serotonin and melatonin as well as folate.

There is evidence to show that glyphosate produces resistance to antibiotic drugs, just as overuse of antibiotics themselves contributes to the increase of so-called “superbugs,” or bacteria resistant to most or all antibiotics. This fact is another reason glyphosate contributes to the health problems relating to antibiotic use and to gut health issues, in particular.

The overuse of antibiotics both in humans and animals is an ongoing problem with many authorities calling for a reduction in use so that antibiotics are not rendered useless by the development of antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria.

Current policies regarding antibiotics virtually guarantee that not only will microbiome health be harmed by the consumption of antibiotic tainted foods and by the use of antibiotics too easily prescribed, but also that harmful bacteria will become stronger rendering antibiotics less useful in applications where they are truly needed.

An interesting fact in this regard is that Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a gram-negative bacteria, is a major problem in hospitals today due to its resistance to multiple antibiotics. It is one of only three bacterial species that can break down glyphosate. However, it produces formaldehyde as a by-product. Formaldehyde is a well-established neurotoxin. It is likely that the growth of this harmful bacteria is stimulated by the presence of glyphosate in the gut.

Avoidance of antibiotics in foods and when not medically necessary are ways individuals can help keep themselves healthy.

ENDOCRINE DISRUPTION

While this article deals primarily with the topic of gut or gastrointestinal health, it is noteworthy that glyphosate is considered to be an endocrine disruptor.

Endocrine disruption is associated with birth defects, reproductive problems (like infertility), breast cancer, and developmental problems in babies and children before and after birth, as well as a host of other health effects.

Endocrine disruptors are common in the environment, and we have written about them in previous posts. Glyphosate’s role as an endocrine disruptor is important not only because it is another harmful element among its many dangers, but also simply because of its ubiquitousness in the environment.

The amount of glyphosate spray in the US and the world in extraordinary. As weeds have become resistant to glyphosate (leading  to the rise of super weeds), the solution has been to spray more of it. Therefore, the amounts to which individuals are exposed have skyrocketed along with the increase in its application on crops and elsewhere.

Also, as noted, the practice of spraying glyphosate as a desiccating agent on non-GMO crops (such as wheat, oats, sugar cane, and peanuts) contributes significantly to human exposure. So too does “household” use in gardens and use by municipalities for spraying to decrease “weeds” in public places, such as parks and schools.

NUTRIENTS, HORMONES, AND NEUROTRANSMITTERS DISRUPTED BY GLYPHOSATE

In Dr. Seneff’s presentations she has pointed out that the following nutrients, hormones, and neurotransmitters are disrupted by glyphosate:

  1. Folate, Vitamin K, Vitamin A, Vitamin D, and cobalamin (Vitamin B12).
  2. Aromatic amino acids and methionine
  3. Iron, manganese, cobalt, selenium, zinc, and sulfur
  4. Serotonin, melatonin, dopamine, epinephrine
  5. Melanin (skin tanning agent), thyroid hormone
  6. NAD, glutathione (key antioxidant defenses)

Clearly it would be wise to take in foods and nutritional supplements that could replete the body with these  substances.

GLYPHOSATE DISRUPTS PROTEINS AND ENZYMES RELYING ON GLYCINE

Recently, Dr. Seneff and collaborators have identified the fact that glyphosate – a glycine amino acid based molecule – can disrupt a large number of enzymes in the body by inserting itself into proteins during the synthesis process where glycine would normally be inserted. LEAKY GUT AND BT TOXINS

Another class of worrisome genetically modified crops are Bt corn and other Bt crops (cotton, potato, and soy). Note that there are also glyphosate tolerant/resistant strains of corn (maize), so all types of GMO corn are potentially hazardous to health.

Bt corn is a variant of maize genetically altered to express proteins from the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis. Thousands of different Bt strains exist that produce proteins toxic to insect pests. Particular strains are chosen to target specific plant pests, such at the European Corn Borer (ECB).

 When an insect consumes Bt-containing plant tissues, one or more Bt proteins become activated in its gut, creating toxins that paralyze its digestive system and form holes in its gut wall.

Bt toxins bind to receptors in the insect’s gut. This causes the  gut wall to break down and allows toxins, as well as normal gut bacteria to enter the insect’s body. Toxins and bacteria proliferate in the insect’s body causing death. Notably, many insects have developed resistance to glyphosate, just as have weeds.

It has been noted by commentators that the human digestive system appears to be damaged in a similar way by proteins in Bt corn. In any event, as the number of acres planted with Bt corn increases, it appears that human digestive disorders also increase.

While the effects of the Bt toxin are different than those of glyphosate and other chemicals in glyphosate-containing crop chemicals, the fact is that evidence shows that the Bt toxins appear to adversely impact gut health.

KEY TAKEAWAY: CONSUME 100% ORGANIC DIET

Among key takeaways from examining the literature of problems associated with antibiotic use, as well as with the chemicals associated with modern agriculture and genetically modified foods (i.e., glyphosate and other herbicides, pesticides, and various surfactants and adjuvants used with them): Choose to eat organic foods as much as possible for best health.

Only by consuming organic foods can individually significantly reduce the amount of glyphosate, pesticides, antibiotics, and other harmful chemicals in the diet to support good health in general, and gut health in particular. Organic foods are also more nutrient dense, and therefore more nutritious.

After it is understood how current industrial agricultural methods contribute to damaging human health, then organic foods can be seen as a solution helping ensure avoidance of most or many of harmful elements in foods.

Organically grown foods may be tainted by drift or by toxins in the soil existing before the adoption of organic farming methods. Yet, the amounts of such toxins will be significantly reduced overall by consuming organic foods. The longer-term solution is adoption of organic methods (and corresponding reductions in use of chemicals and GMOs in agriculture) that will result in a cleaner, safer food supply for all.

Some say that organic foods are no better, or cost too much, or do not improve health. But the truth is that they are better, should not cost more, and are far more sustainable for human and planetary health. In fact, at this point in time, consuming organic foods may be the only practical solution for avoiding health problems, especially gut-health problems, associated with industrialized, chemically based agricultural methods.

Growing food yourself is another option, as is purchasing organic or locally grown organically grown produce at your Farmer’s Market. These foods will not be sprayed with toxins and will not suffer the same level of nutrient declines found in conventional produce. Having even a relatively small garden at home will allow you to supplement organic foods you obtain locally. Some neighborhoods support community gardens where you can grow foods organically.

Between consuming foods you grow, purchasing organic or non-sprayed produce locally and/or at natural foods stores, emphasizing grass-fed, free-range animal products (e.g., eggs and meats), and reducing meals at restaurants that serve conventional foods (as well as ordering organic and non-GMO foods whenever possible), you can largely bypass or reduce the toxicity and gut-health issues associated with the toxins and GMOs in foods sold in grocery stores and ubiquitous in our food distribution system.

A 100% organic diet is recommend, entirely possible, and at the very least a worthy goal. It will pay dividends in terms of good health and how you feel.

Others recommend to detoxify from glyphosate by consuming an organic diet.

AVOID WHEAT, GLUTEN, AND SIMPLE CARBS

Wheat stands out as a singular food to avoid. It been hybridized beyond all recognition with many genes being added because wheat genes are additive. The wheat protein gluten has been linked to many types of health problems.

Gluten has long been a problem for gut health. Now with glyphosate being sprayed directly on wheat crops (as well as oats, sugar cane, and peanuts) as a desiccating agent, it seems that opening tight junctions in the gut and then having exposure to gluten is a prescription for disaster.

Glyphosate increasingly is sprayed on wheat (a non-GMO crop) for drying before harvest. How does poisoning wheat this way make sense?

Some commentators (like Wheat Belly author William Davis, MD) show that gluten is linked with obesity, diabetes, celiac disease, and many others.

Avoidance of wheat, gluten, and other simple carbohydrates is a good idea if you would maintain and retain good gut health.

HEALTH EFFECTS LINKED TO GLYPHOSATE

In the article “Glyphosate’s Suppression of Cytochrome P450 Enzymes and Amino Acid Biosynthesis by the Gut Microbiome: Pathways to Modern Diseases,” Stephanie Seneff and Anthony Samsel state that there are many pathologies to which glyphosate may contribute:

“The pathologies to which glyphosate could plausibly contribute, through its known biosemiotic effects, include inflammatory bowel disease, obesity, depression, ADHD, autism, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, ALS, multiple sclerosis, cancer, cachexia, infertility, and developmental malformations.” (Entropy 201315(4), 1416-1463; doi:10.3390/e15041416)

SUMMARY

Industrial agriculture, including the practices associated with the cultivation of GMO crops, harms the soils and human health.

Dangers to human health from industrial agriculture and GMOs includes harm to gastrointestinal health. This encompasses many conditions, including Leaky Gut Syndrome.

Leaky gut does not always result from a single cause, but can involve multiple factors, including exposure to glyphosate (and its adjuvants), Bt toxins, depleted nutrient levels, wheat and wheat protein (gluten/gliadin) exposure, microbiome imbalances or disruption, antibiotic use or consuming foods containing antibiotics, other chemical exposures, and additional factors.

Ways to avoid leaky gut: 1) Consume a 100% organic diet, 2) Avoid GMOs, 3) Avoid antibiotics, 4) Maintain a healthy microbiome, 5) Avoid wheat and simple carbohydrates (and simple sugars), 6) Improve nutrient levels through diet and dietary supplements, 7) Use specific supplements that help restore and maintain gut health 7) Detoxify on a regular basis using juices, herbs, and other practices.

We will continue writing articles for blog series on the topic of gut health. In coming months, we will write about various means for improving gastrointestinal structure and function. These means include restoring tight junctions in the gut using Restore (lignite formula).

Fred Liers PhD foundational supplements remain fundamentalI spoke with an old friend recently. I will call him Joe.

Joe has digestive tract issues, including extreme diverticulosis. While I have provided him with suggestions for improved nutrition and supplement use in recent years, he hasn’t followed any of my recommendations seriously.

Instead Joe opted for a more conventional route. Now his situation has worsened dramatically, and he says he’s ready to start a program of improved nutrition and supplements. That’s good, even though it would be easier had he started sooner. Like I said, Joe is a good friend. I wish him health and happiness.

My initial advice to Joe remains the same as it would be for everyone. He should start with a dietary changes and a solid program of foundational supplements like those in the HPDI Foundational Supplements Program. He can later add enhancements and condition-specific formulas addressing his unique needs.

WHY FOUNDATIONAL SUPPLEMENTS?

The HPDI Foundational Supplements program was developed by Hank Liers, PhD to provide optimal levels of basic nutrients important for good health. In our experience, the HPDI program works to support vibrant health. It also helps cover gaps left by poor diet, incomplete nutritional supplementation, and imbalances due to genetic factors. It helps to compensate for lower nutrients levels found in many modern foods both processed and/or produced by modern industrial agricultural methods (i.e., that deplete soils or block nutrient uptake).

HPDI’s foundational supplements program includes six categories of dietary supplements.

JOE’S DIET IS NOT SO GOOD

I don’t like to be overly prescriptive about food. But Joe is a “carb” lover and with a history of consuming processed, high-sugar foods, and junk foods. For example, processed breads, donuts, candy bars, and soda have been staples for years. It doesn’t help many of these foods either are GMO or high in glyphosate (the main ingredient in the herbicide RoundUp), which is known to produce adverse gastrointestinal (and other harmful) effects.

He has reduced his intake of high-carb, sugary foods in recent years. In fact, he has significantly cut back on simple sugars because he finds they drain his energy and don’t help his digestion.

I suggested he continue cutting back on simple carbs and sugars, and that he add more fresh vegetables and high-quality proteins to his diet. I recommend organically grown and non-GMO foods.

I can’t say what caused Joe’s diverticulosis. But I can say that changes in his diet are necessary to support optimal health, as well as healing of damage to his digestive tract.

It doesn’t help that Joe takes several drugs, including a long-term antibiotic for a stubborn urinary tract infection, and a laxative (containing polyethylene glycol) for his constipation and diverticulosis. These drugs may help in the short term, but they far from ideal for long-term use.

Joe himself isn’t pleased with his need for drugs. He intends ultimately to stop them when possible.

He has been having trouble sleeping in recent years. I suspect this may be related to his troubles with his intestinal tract, dysbiosis, and possibly issues with his microbiome.

SUPPLEMENTATION

Joe sent me his supplement schedule and results from a few health tests to review. He has “nutrition-oriented” doctors whose advice he follows quite rigorously.

I reviewed his supplement schedule and health test results. His results include some in-depth genetic tests, which provide insights into potential health concerns, and practical advice for nutritional supplementation.

IMBALANCES CALL FOR FOUNDATIONAL NUTRITION

I saw glaring gaps in Joe’s supplement schedule. There are major imbalances in his supplement program. For example, I see no multivitamins or vitamin C/antioxidant formula, which are basic to the HPDI foundational program.

Indeed, for all the good elements, his program unfortunately is hit-or-miss in terms of providing a complete spectrum of essential nutrients.

On the upside, he’s been taking a few specific-nutrient supplements daily:

5,000 mg of vitamin D (25-hydroxy).

3,000 mg of Omega-3 (EPA/DHA) and 1,000 mg of flax seed oil.

He gets some coenzyme B vitamins:

2,000 mcg of a methyl folate (MTHF)

1,000 mcg of B12 as methylcobalamin daily.

Taking these standalone coenzyme B vitamins is good because test results indicate he has the heterozygous genotype for the MTHFR C677T (C/T) and MTHFR A1298C (A/C). The presence of both polymorphisms can result in significantly reduced activity of MTHFR potentially leading to reduced production of the active form of folate (L-methylfolate).

As his test results stated: “Reduced levels of L-methylfolate lead to decreased production of neurotransmitters, reduced conversion of homocysteine to methionine, and reduced s-adenosylmethionie (SAMe) concentrations.”

GAPS: HIT OR MISS ON FOUNDATIONALS

I asked about his multivitamin and vitamin C intake. He said he takes them despite the fact they are absent from his supplement schedule. I supposed they were absent from his schedule because his doctors want to make sure he gets his vitamin D, folate, methylcobalamin, and essential fats, but aren’t too concerned about whether or not he takes a complete multivitamin, vitamin C/antioxidant formula, or complete B-complex vitamins.

Joe told me he takes a multivitamin, B-complex, and vitamin C supplement. But didn’t take all of them daily.  All three products came from a “big-box” store known for low prices.

Joe therefore consumed a few specific, advanced, medical-quality formulas at the direction of his doctors. Yet, he purchased low-end multivitamin, vitamin C, and B-complex products that can or should be the foundation of his supplement program.

His multivitamin was a low-potency formula providing only 3–500% of the daily value for most nutrients with many at exactly 100%. Not only is this multivitamin low-potency, but its forms are conventional (no coenzyme vitamins or advanced forms). Moreover, it is full of unnecessary additives and fillers like polyethylene glycol, polyvinylpyrrolidone, and sodium benzoate.

His vitamin C was 500 mg. He didn’t take it every day and when he did, he took only one or two.

WHAT I DID FOR JOE

Joe and I talked about his situation. He agreed to receive a package of supplements. Actually, I attempted several years ago to help him get onto a foundational supplements program. He took some supplements and he definitely noticed a difference in how he felt. Yet, he wasn’t ready to take a complete system of high-quality supplements. He finally agreed to try the program.

I sent him a package of HPDI supplements. It included two foundational supplements: Hank & Brian’s Mighty Multi-Vite! (multivitamin) and PRO-C (vitamin C/antioxidant formula). I did not include essential fats because he already takes them. I will send Rejuvenate! PLUS superfood and Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula in a separate shipment.

Joe now takes the Mighty Multi-Vite! and PRO-C, as well as Myo-Mag (magnesium) daily. He is already noticing he needs less of his laxative, and has scaled back his dosage. He can see the day is coming when he can wean himself entirely of it. He has updated his supplement schedule to include all of his supplements, so he can better track his supplement intake and ensure consistency.

I also sent him a Warrior Sleep for his sleeping troubles, and a bottle of Restore, which may help his intestinal tract and problems related to it.

In forthcoming blog posts I plan to document the status of Joe’s health, including his energy levels and subjective feelings about his health. We will see how foundational supplements help him.

Not everyone is as fortunate as as Joe to have a friend who will send supplements and more importantly, talk to him in depth about nutrition and the need for foundational supplements.

WHAT JOE CAN DO FOR HIMSELF

It is my hope that Joe will follow the foundational supplements program, regain some health, and continue to improve by remaining on the program with HPDI supplements. He can take on his foundational supplements program as a mission for his own long-term health.

I also hope Joe’s experience with HPDI supplements will be an example to others who may be in similar situations. This includes individuals who don’t know where to begin, and those who take a variety of supplements yet aren’t receiving a full complement of essential nutrients.

Others who may be in similar situations to Joe’s include those who take supplements as directed by their doctor, but whose supplement schedule is “hit-or-miss,” which I suspect is a lot of people. Or those taking low-potency multivitamins or B-complex vitamins or just 500 mg of vitamin C daily. Also those taking basic supplements sporadically or whenever they “feel like it.”

Joe is far from being alone in having significant gaps in his foundation of essential nutrients that support good health. His doctors missed those gaps despite their best intentions to provide him with advanced nutrients based on genetic testing to assess potential deficiencies. “Losing sight of the forest for the trees” can happen to the best of us. In fact, the average person’s nutrient profile is not unlike Joe’s in many respects. And like Joe’s situation, foundational supplements can help close the gaps.

FOUNDATIONAL SUPPLEMENTS CAN LEAD TO BETTER HEALTH

There are many reasons I feel confident that HPDI foundational supplements will continue helping Joe. Not only am I not surprised he is noticing results, but also I’ve seen health improve in many (perhaps hundreds of) individuals when they begin a complete foundational supplements program, and then especially when they maintain it.

Good results are not surprising when the levels of nutrients increase from just 100% of the daily value for most nutrients to much higher levels.

Results improve over time when the body continues receiving high levels of essential nutrients.

Dietary supplements are generally non-toxic so there is little risk of problems when the body receives more than adequate nutrients to meet its needs.

And why take just the minimum? Minimum amounts of nutrients tend to perpetuate deficiencies when you consider factors like poor diet, increased oxidative stress, toxic exposures (leading to greater nutrient needs to support detoxification), and genetic factors (e.g., enzyme deficiencies).

HPDI foundational supplements are formulated by Dr. Hank Liers, PhD. Hank is known for formulas that utilize only the highest-purity and highest-quality ingredients, and for his emphasis on natural forms (e.g., coenzyme forms) best recognized and utilized by the body.

FOUNDATIONAL SUPPLEMENTS ARE FUNDAMENTAL

Foundational supplements are the foundation for good health. That is why we call them foundational. This is also why we believe so strongly in providing a strong foundation of nutrients before recommending what we call enhancement formulas, specific-condition formulas, or other add-ons (such as a soil-based probiotic formula).

That is to say, a given individual will possibly have many requirements for nutrients specific to their needs. Such formulas may include magnesium, iodine, certain B vitamins like coenzyme folate (5-MTHF). An individual may also require formulas specific to certain issues, concerns, or organ systems, such as formulas targeting joint health, bone health, allergies, blood sugar, liver health, and others. In fact, HPDI formulates formulas specific to these needs.

Yet, before specific needs are addressed, or at least concurrently, HPDI believes that foundational nutrients must provide the base or foundation upon which all other nutrients, condition-specific formulas, or enhancement formulas rest.

One danger, as we saw with Joe’s supplement schedule before he started taking HPDI foundational supplements, was putting the cart before the horse. That is, finding a person in a situation where there are several or numerous advanced nutrients being taken. Yet, where the “base” is relatively weak due to low-potency supplements and/or lack of basic nutrients. In this type of situation, it is less likely that the addition of several advanced nutrients can make as much of a difference for health because key nutrients are missing.

Missing key nutrients prevents certain advanced nutrients or even higher levels of specific nutrients from doing their job because major imbalances can render those nutrients useless, less bioavailable, or unable to contribute what they could were there a sufficiency of the basic nutrients required to support all biochemical processes in the body. The point is that without a plentiful supply of basic nutrients in ideal forms, which is exactly what is provided by foundational supplements (and almost never by diet alone), a person will remain vulnerable to many nutrient deficiencies. Nutrient deficiencies (especially when they are prolonged over time) can result in less than optimal health.

By simply providing optimal levels of all basic nutrients, foundational supplements support the body by covering its nutritional needs, not unlike insurance. Moreover, they are generally inexpensive (relative to conventional health care costs) even for the highest-quality supplements, such as HPDI formulas.

CONCLUSION

Foundational supplements remain fundamental for health. Nothing can replace them. Before starting single nutrients or condition-specific formulas, it is important to obtain a full complement of basic nutrients that support bodily function.

After basic nutrition is attained through foundational supplements, diet, and appropriate lifestyle changes, then other types of nutritional supplements (such as enhancement formulas and specific-condition formulas) may be added to form a complete nutritional supplement system.

GUT FUNCTION BREAKTHROUGH – RESTORE

Dr Hank Liers PhD restore gut healthI have been excited about the ongoing research concerning the human biome ever since preparing my blog article entitled “A New View of the Role of Bacteria in Health” in June of 2012.

I was particularly impressed by a TED talk of Dr. Bonnie Bassler concerning how bacteria communicate with each other (“Discovering Bacteria’s Amazing Communication System“) on TED.com.

I came away from Dr. Bassler’s talk with a new understanding of who we are and how we are influenced by bacteria. The fact that our bodies house ten times the number of bacteria than the number of cells in our bodies and 100 times the amount of DNA compared to our human DNA is very impressive!! Of particular note was the fact that bacteria conduct both intraspecies and interspecies communication using carbon-based hormones.

TIGHT JUNCTIONS RESTORE GUT HEALTH

Since that time my company switched to a soil-based organisms (SBO) probiotic formula called Prescript-Assist as our main probiotic formula. The formula includes a “prebiotic” called leonardite.

Leonardite is a natural form of humates that is completely organic in nature and provides ideal conditions for “good” bacteria to grow. It is a soft, waxy, black or brown, shiny, vitreous mineraloid that is easily soluble in alkaline solutions.

Leonardite is an oxidation product of lignite, a soft, brown combustible sedimentary rock formed from naturally compressed peat. Lignite has a carbon content of 25–35% and embedded in the carbon are special carbon-based molecules that were produced by soil bacteria millions of years ago.

The amazing part of this story is that Dr. Zachary Bush—a medical doctor with extensive experience in cancer research and mitochondria chemistry—made an accidental and instant connection between the special carbon molecules of lignite and special redox molecules found in mitochondria.

Based upon his recognition of these similar molecules, he developed a formula using the lignite bacterial produced carbon molecules. He found that by adding certain trace minerals and amino acids under special conditions these carbon molecules were activated.

Upon giving his formula to human beings, Dr. Bush discovered dramatic and rapid increases in beneficial gut bacterial counts. That is, the human microbiome was significantly affected in a positive way. This is particularly important since it is known that the human gastrointestinal tract houses about seventy percent of our immune system.

The most amazing part of the story was then discovered. That is when the formula (called RESTORE) was given, the tight junctions in the gut were restored to their optimal condition and “leaky gut” disappeared.

What makes this discovery so special is that “leaky gut” is caused by certain toxic bacteria, gluten, antibiotics, medical anti-inflammatories, and especially the herbicide glyphosate (RoundUp) used for genetically modified (GMO) food crops. This “leaky gut” condition is endemic in our society and getting worse as we continue to take in these toxic substances in ever increasing amounts. In Dr. Bush’s experience with a very broad range of conditions, healing began to occur very quickly when RESTORE is taken.

Additionally, Dr. Bush found that when the tight junctions in the gut were restored to their optimal condition, all of the other tight junctions in the body were restored as well. These include tight junction in the blood brain barrier, the kidney tubules, blood vessels, etc. As a result many conditions in the body dramatically improved.

Dr. Bush discovered that almost all conditions of poor health are caused by chronic inflammation and he has stated that chronic inflammation is caused by a lack of communication within the cells of the body. He has clearly seen that RESTORE reinstates proper communication between the cells and greatly reduces inflammatory conditions!

(HPDI) have recognized the importance of supporting a healthy microbiome through diet, lifestyle, and the use of probiotic supplements.

We have written blog articles on developments regarding the microbiome, including “The Advantages of Soil Based Organisms for Health” (2014) and Dr. Hank’s short piece “A New View of the Role of Bacteria for Health” (2012).

However, the scientific understanding of the microbiome continues making quantum leaps. Every month it seems there is another groundbreaking study reported, or fresh information about the human microbiome highlighting specific aspects of its fundamental role in human health.

For example, studies showing the microbiome’s significance for brain function, digestive tract health, leaky gut, immune system function, and lifelong health. And even more, studies revealing potential connections between microbiome status and conditions involving the gut-brain axis, such as gluten sensitivity, celiac disease, ADHD, autism, depression, Parkinson’s disease, and Alzheimer’s disease.

As exciting as the studies are on a theoretical level, one of the main benefits is that many of them point to practical applications and suggestions that can be implemented on a daily basis by individuals wishing to improve microbiome health and vitality.

Information about means you can take to improve microbiome health is increasingly available not only in the scientific literature (which can be searched for in places like PubMed), but also in the popular media. For example, books like Dr. David Perlmutter’s Brain Maker: The Power of Gut Microbes to Heal and Protect Your Brain for Life (2015) include dietary recommendations and recipes. In addition, there are numerous books and online resources for making your own cultured foods (everything from kombucha tea to fermented condiments), as I will talk about more below.

Increasingly, individuals are speaking with their nutritionist or doctor on this topic, as knowledge of the important role of foods and nutrition in supporting a healthy microbiome.

While at the ACAM (American College for Advancement in Medicine) annual meeting in Las Vegas in November, I attended a presentation by Raphael Kellman, MD. He discussed the importance of the microbiome for supporting health, and the positive effects related to maintaining populations of beneficial flora, including the fact that probiotics can support positive emotions.

I present a few recommendations for supporting and improving microbiome health through lifestyle, dietary choices, and the use of probiotic supplements.

DIETARY RECOMMENDATIONS FOR MICROBIOME HEALTH

Dietary choices are among the simplest, yet most effective means for effecting improvement  in the human microbiome. Here are some dietary recommendations that are known to work.

Consume Foods High in Probiotics, including Fermented Foods. Foods high in probiotics include yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, kim chee, tempeh, pickles and other pickled vegetables, and kombucha tea.

Probiotic foods provide you directly with good-for-you bacteria that help keep your microbiome diverse and well balanced.

Historically, many of the most important bacteria for gut health are lactobacteria and bifidobacteria. Some of the most well-recognized strains of these types include L. acidophilus, B. longum, B. bifidum, L. fermentum, and L. rhamnosus.

Notably, studies indicate reduced levels of lactobacteria and bifidobacteria in depressed individuals. While these two types of bacteria are perhaps the most studied and well-known, there are hundreds or thousands of different types of beneficial bacteria in the human microbiome. I will talk more about some of them when I discuss soil-based organisms.

Source probiotic foods that are organic, biodynamic, garden grown, and free-range / pasture-raised (e.g., dairy products). For pickles and relishes should preferably be unpasteurized and fermented in brine.

Consume Prebiotic Foods. It is important to consume foods that provide non-digestible short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) that support a flourishing good-for-you microbial community. Prebiotic foods include onions, garlic, asparagus, radishes, beans, oats.

Many prebiotic foods contain relatively high amounts of inulin, which is a soluble dietary fiber and a naturally occurring oligosaccharide. Inulin belongs to a class of carbohydrates called fructans.

Inulin selectively feeds beneficial bacteria. Major inulin-containing foods include Jersusalem artichoke (sunchokes), bananas, leeks, beets, and certain herbs. Chicory root, elecampane root, and dandelion root are especially high in inulin.

The fermentation of indigestible complex carbohydrates like inulin (and other natural dietary fibers) in the digestive tract results in the production of short-chain fatty acids that feed beneficial microbiota.

The three primary short chain fatty acids created by gut bacteria are acetic, butryic, and propionic acids. These fatty acids are excreted or absorbed by the colon and used for energy by cells. For example, butyric acid provides fuel for cells lining the colon and is associated with positive benefits.

Because different bacterial species produce different fatty acids, the ratio of the different species is important for health. In particular, butyric acid is associated with positive health benefits.

In contrast, clostridial species produce proprionic acid (PPA), which is too high quantities is known to exert adverse effects in the body, including the brain. Interestingly, studies show that autistic individuals harbor more clostridial species some of which are remarkably absent in normal populations.

At least one comparative study showed the the microbiomes of urban, Western populations (consuming more refined foods) produce relatively high levels of proprionic acid whereas the microbiomes found in rural, non-western populations (consuming more dietary fiber) produce more butyric acid.

Other studies indicate that the microbiome of rural populations predominantly contains bacteroides type flora (associated with lean body mass) and urban populations contain primarily firmicutes (associated with obesity when predominant).

Consume vegetables, including leafy green vegetables: Diets that include relatively high amounts of greens are beneficial for feeding a diverse and healthy microbial community. This is not only because of high-nutrient density and dietary fiber, but also due to the beneficial bacteria naturally present in these foods.

Reduce intake of sugars, especially refined sugars and high-fructose corn syrup. Natural sugars in fruits and vegetables are generally better to consume because they are ingested along with dietary fiber as part of the whole food. Refined sugars and especially high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) test the body’s capacity for dealing with sugar, stress the body, prematurely age cells (via glycation processes), and promote adverse changes that can ultimately lead to diabetes.

Avoid foods containing antibiotics. Antibiotics in foods damage the microbiome by killing bacteria (including beneficial bacteria), reducing microbial diversity, and leaving the microbiome vulnerable to hostile takeover. Thus, consume only free-range, antiobiotic-free meats, eggs, and poultry. Avoid factory farmed meats and farmed fish.

Avoid simple carbohydrates. Like refined sugars, refined carbohydrates and grain products are notorious culprits for producing an imbalanced microbiome. So, avoid overconsuming processed grains, especially those containing wheat.

Avoid gluten. Wheat and the gluten it contains has been implicated in adverse conditions for the microbiome. Yet, wheat isn’t the only food containing gluten. While this may sound like advice given only for celiacs or IBS patients, the picture emerging regarding gluten is that it is associated with adverse changes in the microbiome. Similarly, adverse changes in the microbiome are associated with the development of gluten sensitivity and celiac disease.

Avoid genetically modified foods (GMOs). The consensus is emerging that genetically modified (or genetically engineered) foods contribute to problems in the microbiome. Herbicides used on GMO crops, such as glyphosate, harm the microbiome and contribute to states of depleted nutrition.

Avoid artificial sweeteners. As bad as refined sugars are for the microbiome, artificial sweeteners can be just as bad or worse. Beyond the fact that artificial sweeteners tend to be toxic, they are known to produce adverse changes in the microbiome.

Choose organic, biodynamic, pesticide-free, and garden-raised. Regarding food choices, do your best to obtain naturally grown foods and to avoid agricultural chemicals.

LIFESTYLE CHOICES SUPPORTING THE MICROBIOME

Avoid Antibiotics. Whenever possible, avoid taking antibiotics. These can destroy the balance in your microbiome.

Avoid antimicrobial products. These include soaps (containing triclosan and other chemicals), antimicrobial coatings (like Microban), and antibacterial substances.

Avoid chemicals that affect your microbiome. For example, avoid products and foods with synthetic, toxic preservatives. Drink filtered water (i.e., non-chlorinated water).

Get Dirty. Try gardening, spend time outdoors, or just be in nature more often. Unpolluted soils are an excellent source of natural microbes needed to keep you microbiome in balance.

PROBIOTIC & PREBIOTIC SUPPLEMENTATION

In addition to consuming probiotic and prebiotic foods, it can be helpful to take a probiotic supplement. Many of the probiotic supplements on the market provide a full complement of lactobacteria and/or bifidobacteria (often in the same formula).

It is especially useful to take probiotic supplements after exposure to antibiotics. However, probiotic supplements can offer be an effective adjunct to a probiotic (and prebiotic) friendly diet.

More recently, soil based organisms have garnered attention as important constituents of a healthy microbiome. These differ from lactobacteria, and in many ways are hardier and easier to get into the gut where they can thrive. It is also known that fulvic and humic acids act as prebiotics feeding microbes found in soils (soil based organisms) that support human health.

WHAT ARE SOIL BASED ORGANISMS (SBO)?

There are thousands of different types of bacteria found naturally in soils. These bacteria in soil and dirt historically performed many beneficial functions for us. It appears they help our bodies regulate immunity, and protect us from bacterial and fungal overgrowths in our intestinal tracts.

Up until 100 years ago (or less for some people), soil based organisms were an everyday part of the diet. Not that long ago, our country was comprised mostly of farmers. Agriculture was more about getting dirty than about efficient machinery and chemicals inputs (i.e., industrial agriculture). At that time, almost everyone would have consumed soil based organisms on vegetables and other foods from the fields, gardens, and orchards.

Today due to lack of exposure to soil based organisms resulting from modern food processing systems and the extensive use of pesticides that destroy the organisms, the average person has a very different composition of intestinal flora from their ancestors. There are far fewer soil based organisms, and more lactic acid bacteria. In addition, the use of antibiotics for young children has further swayed the balance away from these beneficial bacteria.

With a dramatic rise in research into the benefits of soil based organisms, new products have been developed that help us reintroduce them into our intestinal tracts. SOIL BASED ORGANISMS ARE DIFFERENT THAN LACTOBACTERIA

Most people today either take or are aware of the benefits of probiotics containing lactic acid-based bacteria. These include commonly known strains of lactobacilli and bifidobacteria. Lactic-acid bacteria certainly are beneficial. There is a large body of research showing their high value for supporting digestion, immunity, and many other benefits. But they do have certain limitations.

Many of the lactic acid bacteria in probiotic formulas have difficulty making it through the stomach’s acidic environment. Thus, the bacteria arrive in the small intestine in vastly reduced numbers compared to the amount that must be consumed. Nutritionists therefore usually recommend taking probiotics with a large number of “colony forming units” (CFU) in order to ensure viability of the bacteria.

In addition, the benefits conferred by taking lactic acid bacteria may depend upon continuing usage. That is, certain studies indicate the benefits of these bacteria are greatly reduced after usage ends.

Soil based organisms offer several advantages compared to lactic-acid bacteria. First, they are extremely hardy and better able to withstand the acidic environment in the stomach. They are in fact, “endospore-forming” bacteria that surround themselves in a hard exterior that travels more effectively through the intestinal tract.

This means soil based organisms are far more likely to arrive intact in the small intestines (where they need to be) than lactobacteria. It also means that products containing soil-based organisms can provide fewer colony forming units and still be effective. That is, probiotic supplements with soil based organisms are more efficient at getting CFUs into the small intestines. It also eliminates or reduces the need for special coatings,  manufacturing processes, or “delivery systems” that must be created as a means to improve delivery rates of lactic acid bacteria.

Soil based organisms have also been shown to colonize the gut more effectively than lactic-acid bacteria. This may partially relate to the fact that they are hardier and make it to the small intestines in greater numbers. A major benefit is that this characteristic of SBOs may allow a reduction is dosage onto a “maintenance” level sooner without concerns that benefits of probiotic supplementation will disappear.

Fulvic and humic acids belong to a group of organic substances called humic substances. Humic acid is normally found in the form of “humate” (the salt of humic acid), i.e., humic acid bound to a nutritional mineral element. Fulvic acid is normally found in the form of ‘fulvate’ (the salt of fulvic acid), i.e., fulvic acid bound to a nutritional mineral element.

A substantial fraction of the mass of the humic acids is in carboxylic acid functional groups, which endow these molecules with the ability to chelate (bind) positively charged multivalent ions (Mg2+, Ca2+, Fe2+, Fe3+, most other “trace elements” of value to plants, as well as other ions that have no positive biological role, such as Cd2+ and Pb2+).

This chelation of ions is probably the most important role of humic acids with respect to living systems. By chelating the ions, they facilitate the uptake of these ions by several mechanisms, one of which is preventing their precipitation, another appears to be a direct and positive influence on their bioavailability.

Humic acid and fulvic acid have been the subject of many years of scientific study not only because of their role in soil and plant biology, but also with respect to their chelation capabilities. That is, for their proven capacities in removing heavy metals from the human body.

Humic and fulvic acids bind only with double valency positive cations, i.e., nutritional elements and/or heavy metal ions. It is likely that a heavy metal ion will displace a lighter, nutritional metal ion and bind with the humate or fulvate.

Many health care practitioners recommend fulvic acid as an electrolyte (to increase cellular electrical efficiency) and supplement to take in combination with trace mineral supplements in order to assist in their uptake by the body. Fulvic acid bonds with these minerals. Because it is a small molecule and therefore easily able to pass through cell membranes, it allows delivery of the minerals efficiently into cells.

Most products are based on processed humate, taken from high quality soil sources, containing large amounts of nutritional cations already bound into the matrix. They are therefore not likely to deplete an individual’s mineral levels. As fulvic acid/fulvate is the smaller molecule, it is more easily absorbed into the cells. It is regarded as an excellent method of delivery for trace elements and nutrients into the body, as well as being an excellent chelator.

Observed Effects of Humic Acids on Animals

Our focus in this article is upon the effects of soil based organisms and prebiotics (e.g., humic and fulvic acids) in humans. However, it is worth noting that various animal studies show a large number of benefits. These studies show the following benefits:

Covering mucous membrane and adstringent effects

Humic acids can form a protective film on the mucuous epithelium of the gastrointestinal tract against infections and toxins. The macrocolloidal structure of humic acids ensures a good shielding on the mucous membrane of the stomach and gut, the peripheral capillaries, and damaged mucosal cells. As a result of this process, the resorption of toxic metabolites is reduced or fully prevented, especially after infections, in case of residues of harmful substances in foods. Furthermore, humic acids help to prevent excessive loss of water via the intestine.

Antibacterial and virucidal effects

Humic acids can influence the metabolism of proteins and carbonhydrates of microbes by catalytic means. This leads to a directly damaging effect against bacteria or viruses. A second mechanism is related to the interionic bonds of high-molecular protein fractions (toxins) of infectious microbes. Their toxic impact on physiological processes of mucous membrane cells can be weakened considerably or even completely blocked.

Antiphlogical effects

Dermal, oral, or subcutaneous application of humic acids leads to inhibitory effects on inflammation. The ability to inhibit inflammation is considered to be related with the flavonoid groups contained in humic acids.

Antiresorptive and adsorptive effects

As high-molecular humic acids remain in the gastrointestinal tract almost entirely following the enteral application (there is no self-resorption), antiresorptive and adsorptive effects take place where they are needed—in the digestive tract. Primarily cationoid noxes (protein toxins, toxic substances) are fixed, their resorption is reduced considerably or even prevented completely and their elimination through the bowel is promoted. As adsorption by humic acids includes not only physical and chemical reactions, but also complex-formation and ion-exchange, it is more intensive and dynamic compared to purely physical adsorbents.

Effects on the immune system

Humic acids stimulate the resistance forces of the body and lead to an increase in the phagocytosis activity. The inducer effect of phenolic components (groups) of humic acids is believed to be responsible for the immunological effects and is the basis for the success of the treatment of the so-called “factor” diseases in young animals.
