USING HPDI FOUNDATIONAL SUPPLEMENTS

We define foundational supplements as basic or “core” supplements that should be part of everyone’s daily regimen. They are the foundation of a complete nutritional supplement program.

HPDI has a three-tiered system of nutritional supplements: 1) Foundational Supplements, 2) Enhancement Formulas, and 3) Specific-Condition Formulas. All three tiers comprise a complete nutritional supplement program.

When properly combined, these three tiers of nutritional supplements help create optimal health. This month, I explain how to use HPDI foundational supplements, the base or bottom tier of the system (see cone diagram below).

USING HPDI FOUNDATIONAL SUPPLEMENTS

My intent is to guide consumers and health care professionals to decide the foundational supplements that are best for their purposes, and that provide the most effective results.

For anyone new to HPDI’s Foundational Supplements system, we recommend six basic types of supplements. The six categories are: 1) multivitamin formulas, 2) vitamin C / antioxidant formulas, 3) essential fats, 4) high-RNA foods (Rejuvenate! superfoods), 5) gut health formulas, and 6) hydrogen formulas.

We established the original three types of foundational supplements about 1988. We have always suggested that clients and health professionals take and/or recommend multivitamins, vitamin C and antioxidants, and essential fats.

About 10 years ago, we added high-RNA foods (like Rejuvenate! superfoods) as a fourth type of foundational supplement because research indicates dietary nucleic acids are essential nutrients—see our blog articles on nucleic acids, Benjamin S. Frank, MD, PhD, and about Rejuvenate! superfoods (Original, Plus, and Berries & Herbs).

Two categories of foundational supplements are new: gut health formulas and hydrogen formulas. Hank wrote an article (Amending the HPDI Foundational Program) about these changes in April. We added these two categories after much consideration regarding their benefits, and have written extensively about them in this blog (see resources section below).

The entire HPDI supplement system is depicted (above) as a cone. The six types of foundational supplements form the base of the cone. Enhancement Formulas and Specific-Condition formulas sit above toward the apex.

HOW I USE HPDI FOUNDATIONAL SUPPLEMENTS

I use all six types of HPDI foundational supplements. I take the following supplements (below) and present them here as an example of how they can be integrated into a complete supplement regimen. Foundational Supplements I take:

1. Multivitamin: Hank & Brian’s Mighty Multi-Vite! (4 per day in divided doses)

2. Vitamin C / antioxidants: PRO-C (6-8 per day) and Ultimate Protector Nrf2 activator (8-12 per day)

3. Essential Fats: Essential Fats Plus E (4 per day)

4. Rejuvenate!™ superfood: All three Rejuvenate! superfoods (2-8 scoops per day)

5. Gut Health: RESTORE For Gut Health (1-2 ounces per day) and Prescript-Assist™ probiotic (soil-based organisms) (1-3 per week)

6. Hydrogen: Megahydrate (2-6 per day)

Taking one supplement from each of the six foundational supplement categories builds, supports, and maintains optimal health.

We at HPDI recommend everyone take one of each type of foundational supplement. That is, we suggest an individual select for personal use a multivitamin, vitamin C/antioxidant formula, essential fats formula, Rejuvenate!™ superfood (or other high-RNA superfood), hydrogen product, and at least one gut health product (depending on their gut-health needs).

Similarly we suggest health care professionals recommend for their clients one of each of the six types of foundational supplements.

The other two categories in the HPDI nutritional supplement system are Enhancement Formulas and Specific-Condition Formulas (see cone diagram). These are not foundational supplements. However, I include the supplements I take in these categories for the sake of completeness, as well as to show how Enhancement and Specific-Condition Formulas integrate with Foundational Supplements to form a complete supplement program providing a wide-range of essential nutrients required for health.

Enhancement Formulas I take include: B-Complex-50 (B complex), Myo-Mag (magnesium/malic acid), Ubiquinol-50, Bone Guardian, and Vitamin D3 Plus.

Specific Condition Formulas I take include: Joint Health Formula, Allergy Support Formula, Eye & Vision Formula, Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula, and Warrior Mist (pain topical), and Warrior Sleep (sleep topical).

While I take supplements from all three categories (Foundationals, Enhancements, and Specific-Condition) in the HPDI supplement system, I always prioritize foundational supplements—I take them first—because they are base on which my personal supplement program rests.

Foundational supplements should be the base on which your supplement program—or those of your clients—rests, as well.

We have seen the results of taking a complete set of foundational supplements. They work because the nutrients they provide are needed by everyone.

FOUNDATIONAL SUPPLEMENTS: RESULTS

Individuals who take all types of foundational supplements do best in terms of optimizing health. The reason is that all six types provide nutrients required for good health.

I can attest that HPDI Foundational Supplements are effective for improving or maintaining good health. In addition, I have witnessed numerous instances where individuals benefit most greatly when taking all four–and now all six–types of foundational supplements.

Each of the six categories of foundational supplement provide unique benefits. Yet, each performs functions required by the human body for good health. That is one reason when they are combined they exert synergistic effects for health going far beyond the benefits of using, one, two, or three of the types of foundational supplements.

WHEN FOUNDATIONAL SUPPLEMENTS ARE NOT PRIORITIZED

I talk to people who may or may not take a multivitamin. And they may or may not take vitamin C. Yet, they may take calcium for their bones, glucosamine for their joints, and lutein for their eyes. Or they may take a low-potency, off-the-shelf multivitamin providing merely the RDA for all nutrients.

There is nothing wrong with individuals taking supplements they regard as important or useful. But that cannot guarantee that a wide range—and sufficient levels—of nutrients necessary for health are available to the body on a regular basis.

In fact, I regard the supplement intake programs of most persons to be “hit-or-miss.” They may consume nutrients important for a few functions in the body, yet fail to obtain other essential nutrients required for the nutrients they take to work most effectively. We have written extensively on this topic on our website and in blog articles (see below).

Not taking regularly a complete set of foundational supplements likely means key nutrients (and key levels of nutrients) go missing. Over time, this means fewer and lower levels of nutrients available to support the body’s needs for them at levels known to sustain the good health.

The best way to ensure a sufficient range of nutrients at plentiful levels is to take foundational supplements. After a baseline of nutrients is established by taking foundational supplements, additional supplements can be added, as necessary.

A COMPLETE SYSTEM OF SUPPLEMENTS, INCLUDING FOUNDATIONALS

After obtaining sufficient levels of basic nutrients required for health, then a person can add (or you can recommend) specific nutrients or formulas that target certain problems or issues. This is the basis for HPDI development of Enhancement Formulas and Specific-Condition Formulas.

Nutritional supplements in the categories of Enhancement Formulas and Specific-Condition Formulas therefore “stack” on top of HPDI’s Foundational Supplements (see cone diagram above). In this way, a complete nutritional supplement program begins with the most essential nutrients and continues with customizations based on the unique needs of an individual.

ENHANCEMENT FORMULAS

Enhancement Formulas in the HPDI system are supplements we regard as falling into the next tier in terms of importance, at least for most people. They do not necessarily provide essential nutrients, and yet many people (including myself) benefit significantly from them.

Enhancement Formulas include: magnesium formulas (topical and capsule), Vitamin D3 Plus, Nascent Iodine, Vitamin B12 (methylcobalamin), mushroom-based products (like Immune-Assist™), Prolyt (proteolytic enzymes), Digase (plant-based enzymes), and Warrior Mist (topical pain reliever), and many other formulas.

SPECIFIC-CONDITION FORMULAS

In the HPDI system, individuals can add (in a modular way) various formulas and single nutrients designed to support a particular set of needs or a target a specific condition.

HPDI Foundational Supplements collectively form the base tier of a complete nutritional supplement system comprised of three tiers: 1) Foundational Supplements (six types), 2) Enhancement Formulas (or simply “Enhancements”), and 3) Specific-Condition Formulas.

Foundational Supplements are necessary because they provide nutrients foundational to health. Taking them daily or recommending your clients take them daily can help mean big differences in health, nutrition, and quality of life.

FOUNDATIONAL SUPPLEMENTS: FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)

We frequently get questions from HPDI clients and resellers regarding foundational supplements. These questions include:

“Why did you add gut health and hydrogen products to your foundational supplements program?”
We found it necessary to add categories for gut health and hydrogen because they provide nutrients that are support the body and help ensure the foundational supplement system supports health most effectively. You can read more in previous blog articles (see below).

“Which is the better multivitamin: Multi Two or Mighty Multi-Vite!™?”
It depends on whether you need more B vitamins or antioxidants. Multi Two provides more B vitamins and Mighty Multi-Vite™ provides more antioxidants and cofactors. I take a separate HPDI B-Complex-50 formula, so I take Mighty Multi-Vite!™ as my primary multivitamin.

“What are the differences between Rejuvenate!™ Original, PLUS, and Berries & Herbs superfoods?”
They each provide about 340 mg of dietary nucleic acids. Original is the “greenest” with a large percentage of dietary nucleic acids coming from chlorella and spirunlina. PLUS is our most popular and 30% is identical to Original with more protein and a built-in multivitamin complex. Berries & Herbs contains no greens, yet more nucleic acids (390 mg), protein, and a built-in multivitamin. See our Rejuvenate! comparison page for more information.

“Should I take a vitamin C formula with antioxidants like PRO-C or one with Nrf2 activators like Ultimate Protector?”
Both provide vitamin C and Nrf2 activators, but Ultimate Protector provides more types of Nrf2 activators. Ultimate Protector capsules are smaller than PRO-C capsules, so a daily dose may require taking more capsules.

“How important are hydrogen supplements?”
Very important for energy production, recovery, antioxidant functions, and gut health. Hydrogen supplements like Active H2 and Megahydrate ensure high levels of hydrogen are available in the body.

What are your best products for supporting gut health?
It depends on your needs: cleansing (Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula), probiotic/microbiome support (Prescript-Assist™), or tightening tight junctions in the gut (RESTORE)? We offer products for all these purposes.

All three Rejuvenate! formulas provide at least 340 mg of dietary nucleic acids per serving. The pioneer nucleic acid researcher, Dr. Benjamin S. Frank studied the beneficial effects of nucleic acids on humans and animals during the 1960s and 70s.

Dr. Frank concluded that dietary nucleic acids are essential nutrients for health. He advised consuming a range of 300–1,500 mg daily. However, he noted that healthy benefits are apparent at levels as low as 75 mg.

Chlorella also provides many benefits beyond nucleic acids. In this article, I will explore chlorella as an important ingredient in Rejuvenate! superfoods, as well as a superfood in its own right.

Chlorella provides more dietary nucleic acids than any other green superfood ingredient.

CHLORELLA

Chlorella is a single-celled, fresh-water aquatic plant, named so after the Greek word chloros meaning “green”— because it contains large amounts of the green phytonutrient chlorophyll. Millions of people take chlorella every day (many in East Asia) because it is a highly nutritious superfood.

Researchers who’ve studied chlorella extensively say it’s nature’s “perfect food.” In fact, NASA studied it as a food for astronauts. Chlorella provides a broad spectrum of nutrients, including protein, essential fats, fiber, chlorphyll, vitamins, and minerals, including trace minerals.

Chlorella also provides the highest levels of dietary nucleic acids among all foods. Dietary nucleic acids (e.g., RNA) are now recognized as powerful, natural substances that provide supernutrition, rejuvenate, heal, and help create optimal health.

Chlorella can help you look and feel younger. What Dr. Frank did not know about was chlorella, which is at least 10 times higher in dietary nucleic acids than nutritional yeast or seafoods. If he had known about chlorella, he would have advocated for its consumption to realize the benefits of its dietary nucleic acid content.

Because chlorella is a rich source of nucleic acids, you can expect the type of results reported by Dr. Frank regarding his patients. The benefits of chlorella add up over time—helping people looking and feeling younger—far longer than experienced by those consuming typical (SAD) diets.

In my own experience, I saw myself “growing younger” after consuming chlorella for about three weeks. FOODS ARE THE BEST MEDICINE

The ancient Greek philosopher Hippocrates famously exhorted, “Let food be your medicine.” Yet individuals and society don’t always embrace this truth.

Low levels of nutrition offered by the so-called “Standard American Diet” (SAD) are implicated in the rise of degenerative diseases and other conditions of poor health. Ironically, our age is a time of great food abundance and great malnutrition. A time when food quantity often exceeds food quality.

Facing significant declines of nutritional values in modern foods (due to processing, refining, toxic additives, soil degradation, agricultural chemicals, etc.), as well as the nutrient-depletion in our bodies related to factors like high-speed/high stress lifestyles, poor food choices, and lack of education about nutrition, why should a nutritious superfood like chlorella go overlooked?

Times are changing. People increasingly want nutrition facts about healing foods and super nutrition offered by whole foods like chlorella.

CHLORELLA – NATURE’S PERFECT FOOD?

Chlorella is often considered “nature’s perfect food” because there’s no single food like it. It offers a unique profile of beneficial nutrients, including:

  • Nucleic Acids, including RNA, DNA, and nucleic acid derivatives — a sort of “fountain of youth” providing energy for your cells.

NUTRITIONAL POWERS OF DIETARY NUCLEIC ACIDS

While chlorella contains many valuable nutrients, one group of nutrients stands out as exceptional: its high content of nucleic acids. In particular, RNA (ribonucleic acid) and DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid).

Nucleic acids are involved in many bodily processes, especially energy production and communication within cells (i.e., they enable cells to use energy effectively for greater health). In the cell nucleus, RNA carries out instructions coded in DNA—instructions containing information critical for cell structure and function—which are essential for the lives of our cells.

When our cells receive proper directions and energy to carry them out, they have the resources to help keep us youthful, or at least not age prematurely. Chlorella’s nucleic acids provide us basic materials for repairing and replacing our RNA and DNA, thereby giving us potentially greater energy, vitality, and longevity.

Our bodies naturally make nucleic acids. However, with increasing age we gradually lose our capacity for synthesizing them. This is where nucleic acids from foods can make a difference for health. As noted, pioneer RNA researcher Dr. Benjamin S. Frank discovered that dietary nucleic acids not only improve health, but also slow down and even reverse the aging process.

Many decades of research led Dr. Frank to conclude that nucleic acids are not only improve health, but they’re actually “essential nutrients.” In particular, he describes RNA as “the anti-aging factor.” His research laid the foundation for understanding the effects of all high-nucleic acid foods, including chlorella.

In his books, Dr. Frank predicts nucleic acids will be the “medicine” of the future, but says that everyone can benefit right now — by eating high-nucleic acid foods. In fact, his best-seller Dr. Frank’s No-Aging Diet is a guide for helping people learn about consuming foods high in nucleic acids for optimal health. Yet, he’s hardly alone in his enthusiasm for nucleic acids from foods.

Dr. Frank has plenty of company in his praise for dietary nucleic acids. In a classic, groundbreaking book titled Chlorella, Jewel of the Far East, natural healer Dr. Bernard Jensen focuses on the health benefits of chlorella and its nucleic acids.

Dr. Jensen states, “Eating foods high in nucleic acids provide the material for the repair and production of human nucleic acids…the breakdown of DNA and RNA in the cells [is]…one of the main factors in aging and in degenerative diseases” (83).

He spent his life traveling the world searching for secrets of health and longevity. He was impressed by the “mind blowing” effects of dietary nucleic acids on human health, especially the effects of chlorella.

Dr. Jensen marveled at chlorella’s nutritional characteristics. He understood then that it would take time to study and understand the mechanisms behind chlorella’s evident benefits. However, he was clear in stating that while science takes time unraveling chlorella’s mysteries, anyone can benefit from consuming it right now—without waiting for the day when modern science fully reveals how it makes us healthier.

He also states, “We know from studies, from experiments and the experiences of many people that chlorella protects the body and restores health, without undesirable side effects” (85).

Nutrition science already reveals the foods highest in nucleic acids. These foods include fish, organ meats, beans, brewer’s yeast, and most of all chlorella. Yet, foods and superfoods aren’t typically promoted for their high nucleic acid levels. Most doctors and nutritionists know little about the importance of dietary nucleic acids.

Yet, nothing prevents individuals from consuming high-nucleic acid foods right now, as Dr. Frank and Dr. Jensen advise.

1. REJUVENATION PANCAKES: A HEALTHIER HEART RECIPE

A favorite easy breakfast is a plate of piping-hot pancakes, and making heart-healthier pancakes for the whole family is easier than you might think. For starters, I suggest adding a couple scoops of Rejuvenate!™ Berries & Herbs to the mix. Rejuvenate! Berries & Herbs compliments the fruity-sweet flavor of blueberries.

I also suggest adding chia seeds to the mix, and they can be pre-ground in coffee grinder or added whole.

Ingredients:

  • 2.5 cups of whole grain pancake mix
  • 2 cups of spring water

2. REJUVENATE! TOAST

Of my favorite morning superfood treats, this one is the quickest and easiest. This is an absolutely delicious spread that’s also fabulous on muffins (see below), or pancakes (see above).

Ingredients:

  • 1 scoop of Rejuvenate!™ Berries & Herbs
  • 1-2 slices bread (we use whole or sprouted grain)
  • 1 tbsp (approx) coconut oil or coconut spread
  • Sliced apple, banana, or other favorite fruit
  • Grade B maple syrup (Grade A Dark with Robust Taste)
  • Optional: 1 tsp chia seeds (whole or ground)

Directions: While your favorite bread is toasting, take a small dish and mix a tablespoon (more or less to taste) of coconut oil, a scoop of Rejuvenate! on top (my favorite is Berries & Herbs), and enough Grade B maple syrup to sweeten to your liking. For the final touch, top with banana or very thinly sliced apple or other favorite fruit, and enjoy! (For those with a sweet tooth, add some stevia for a low-glycemic treat.)

3. Green Superfood Muffins

Ingredients:

  • 2 large eggs (up to 3 regular eggs)
  • 1 cup raw milk, or substitute rice milk, oat milk, or a nut milk
  • 1/2 cup xylitol (or the equivalent of another natural sweetener)
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 3-6 scoops Rejuvenate! Original, Rejuvenate Berries & Herbs, or Rejuvenate Plus
  • 1/2 cup shredded coconut
  • 1 cup wholes spelt (or substitute another grain)
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Directions: Beat eggs, milk, and xylitol together until light foam develops. Add dry ingredients and mix well. Scrape the bowl of any dry pockets. Put mix in prepared muffin pan and bake at 350 degree until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out dry. Baking time may vary slightly due to moisture content of coconut, humidity, etc. Check after 25 minutes, and then every five minutes until toothpick comes out dry. Enjoy!

4. Rejuvenate! Breakfast Berry Bar

If you want to try just one of our superfood treats, this recipe is just the thing! I recommend Rejuvenate Plus which has hemp protein, bio sprout protein, chlorella, spirulina, vitamins, etc. Place these items in the food processor, one at a time, in the order listed for best results.

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup of raw, organic almonds
  • 2 tablespoons, chia seeds
  • 2 scoops of Rejuvenate Plus or  Rejuvenate Berries & Herbs
  • a small handful of organic raisins (more for a sweeter bar)
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup raspberries (or blueberries), fresh or frozen

The mixture will become thick and stuck to the sides of the processor. Next, press into a glass dish (I use a 7×5 inch pyrex with a lid) and refrigerate! Adding fresh organic blueberries is also very delicious!

5. REJUVENATE! LEMONADE: A Delicious, Satisfying, and Detoxifying Drink

Mix these ingredients in a quart glass container:

  • 4-6 tablespoons organic lemon juice (freshly squeezed is always best!)

REJUVENATE! LEMONADE – DELICIOUS & SATISFYING

In the early 2000s, not long after I moved to southern Arizona, someone turned me on to a delicious drink we call “chlorella lemonade.” That person undoubtedly was my father, Dr. Hank Liers. At the time, he was into putting chlorella into different foods and drinks with an eye toward improving nutritional value. He still tinkers that way. In any event, that’s how I became enamored with chlorella lemonade. I’ve drunk it for more than a decade.

Fresh lemonade itself is a great thirst-quenching drink. Adding chlorella to lemonade improves its nutritional profile, adds significant detoxifying and healing characteristics, and makes it essentially a hydrating, alkalizing “green” drink. All without sacrificing taste. That is to say, it won’t be a deal breaker (for most people) when it comes to flavor, or texture for that matter.

While taste is a matter of opinion, the health-building characteristics of chlorella are indisputable. That doesn’t mean I never make straight-up lemonade. But I’m far more desirous of creating fresh, custom lemonade drinks using superfoods, including chlorella.

Indeed, one of my favorite drinks is a great-tasting chlorella lemonade made with fresh-squeezed organic lemons, organic grade B maple syrup, chlorella (1–3 teaspoons), and perhaps a pinch of cayenne. That’s a great basic recipe.

Over the years, we’ve created different versions of the basic recipe. Some ingredients include fresh limes, fresh hot peppers (including habanero and chiletepin peppers, blackstrap molasses, chia seeds, and chlorella, of course.

In fact, when I think of all the different versions of lemonade we’ve created, the single ingredient that sticks in my mind is chlorella. I simply love chlorella lemonade. It even tastes great to me without any maple syrup or cayenne pepper. Especially on hot summer days.

My days of drinking chlorella lemonade are far from over. But I’ve come to favor a unique kind of superfood lemonade. It’s called “Rejuvenate! Lemonade.”

THE ADVENT OF REJUVENATE! SUPERFOOD

About seven years ago (in 2007), HPDI launched its first Rejuvenate!™ high-RNA superfood (original greens). You might call it a “chlorella-based” superfood since it’s about 40% chlorella. But it’s got a lot more than chlorella going for it. I’ll talk more about that later.

I had sample versions of Rejuvenate!™ superfood in 2006. I was taste-testing it and experimenting with various drink and smoothie recipes. One day, I ran out of my supply of chlorella just as I was planning to make a batch of chlorella lemonade. Having no chlorella available, I reached for the new Rejuvenate! formula as the best alternative I could find. To my surprise, it tasted just as good. Maybe better!!

Now I make Rejuvenate! Lemonade on a regular basis. I make it year-round, but I tend to drink more of it in the spring and summer months. It provides high-level hydration and quenches thirst supremely well.

Because Rejuvenate! is so rich in dietary nucleic acids (i.e., the richest source per unit weight among our three Rejuvenate! superfoods), I find it easier to reach my daily goals for RNA intake. That is, I aim for at least 340 mg of dietary RNA daily, but I prefer to consume 1,000–1,500 mg. Just three scoops of original Rejuvenate! puts me over 1,000 mg. I may drink two quarts of Rejuvenate! lemonade (each with 2–3 scoops of Rejuvenate!), so I can easily meet my optimal daily intake.

I drink Rejuvenate! Lemonade frequently. But about once or twice per year (usually in the warmer months), I will drink it exclusively for one to weeks. That is, I will flush (or fast) using Rejuvenate! Lemonade alone. I greatly enjoy my Rejuvenate! lemonade flushes!! In fact, I look forward to them. I will talk more about lemonade flushes or diets later.

The Rejuvenate! Lemonade recipe is delicious and amazingly nutritious. After you taste it, you may wish to consume it frequently!! As we say, it is delicious, satisfying, and detoxifying!

LET’S MAKE REJUVENATE!™ LEMONADE

Basic Recipe for Rejuvenate! Lemonade. Mix Ingredients in a Quart Jar:

• 4–6 Tbsp Organic Lemon Juice (Fresh Squeezed Best)

• 3–6 Tbsp Organic Grade B Maple Syrup

• 1–2 scoops (2–4 Tbsps) of Rejuvenate! (Original). (I sometimes add a third scoop of Rejuvenate!™.)

• Pinch of Cayenne Pepper (Organic) (Fresh or Powder) (Optional)

• Ice Cubes (Optional) (great for warm days and for keeping Rejuvenate! Lemonade cold.)

DIRECTIONS

Fill the jar with purified water. Add all ingredients, i.e., lemon juice, maple syrup (grade B), Rejuvenate!™ original, cayenne pepper (optional) and ice (optional). The order in which you add ingredients doesn’t matter so much, but fill the jar with water first to prevent Rejuvenate! from sticking to the jar. We then prefer to add the lemon juice and maple syrup before adding the Rejuvenate! because it helps make measuring easier. Shake or stir well. Enjoy!!

I typically use a one-quart mason jar. That way I can easily put the lid on the jar and shake to mix. But any quart-sized or greater jar or pitcher will work, as long as you shake or stir well. The ingredients go into suspension reasonably well, but there may be some settling. Consider re-stirring if it sits for a while. A straw or long spoon works nicely for this purpose.

Even kids love Rejuvenate! Lemonade. This means it’s a great way for them to get concentrated nutrition that supports good health, proper growth, and ensures intake of nutritious greens!!

CONSIDERATIONS FOR MAKING & USING REJUVENATE! LEMONADE

Rejuvenate! Lemonade is great for use daily or whenever you feel like it. But for those interested in taking advantage of therapeutic benefits of Rejuvenate! Lemonade, here are a few things to consider. Rejuvenate! Lemonade is an excellent kidney cleanser, supports processes of detoxification, and can helpful for weight loss,

Over the years, our recipes and therapeutic uses of lemonade have been informed and inspired by Stanley Burroughs’ The Master Cleanser and similar proven resources. Regular lemonade (e.g., our recipe minus Rejuvenate!™) actually exerts potent healing properties well beyond hydration. It can be the basis for an effective kidney cleanse or flush, especially when used in combination with certain kidney herbs (e.g., tinctures and teas), superfoods, and a complete program of juicing. That will be the subject of a forthcoming article on the HPDI blog (so look for it!!).

In The Master Cleanser, Burroughs recommends consuming regular homemade lemonade for at least 10 days and up to 40 days. If you’re interested, you should definitely check out his work because there are many considerations to take into account when doing a lemonade diet. As noted, these are somewhat different from those I might suggest for a complete kidney cleanse. But they are worth contemplating if you’re going on a lemonade diet.

Adding Rejuvenate! to lemonade boosts its therapeutic value both for every day use (e.g., to optimize intake of dietary RNA) and for therapeutic purposes like kidney cleaning. That doesn’t mean a program for cleansing kidneys (or a Master Cleanser type lemonade diet) necessarily includes Rejuvenate! superfood in every glass of lemonade. However, Rejuvenate! strongly supports detoxification which is useful when cleansing and purifying the body.

Just as with a regular lemonade diet, you can drink 2–4 quarts of Rejuvenate! Lemonade daily as a rejuvenating, cleansing diet for a period of 1–3 weeks. I usually do a “Rejuvenate! Lemonade Diet” twice yearly for about two weeks. I will drink 2–3 quarts daily depending on my level of hunger. That is about 8–12 glasses (8 ounce) per day. Beyond that I will mostly only consume water (as per Burroughs).

However, I will sometimes add an extra scoop of Rejuvenate! to my lemonade recipe. And occasionally I drink four quarts of Rejuvenate! Lemonade in one day. The keys are flexibility, listening to your body, doing what you feel comfortable with, and what feels right to you.

Note: We at HPDI recommend taking foundational supplements, including a multivitamin, essential fats, an antioxidant / Vitamin C formula (like Ultimate Protector), and Rejuvenate! superfoods. Generally speaking this recommendation holds during times of cleansing and fasting. Maintaining intake of foundational supplements helps ensure good nutritional status during a fast, cleanse, or Rejuvenate! lemonade “diet.”

NUTRITIONALLY DENSE REJUVENATE! LEMONADE

Fresh-squeezed lemonade and “chlorella lemonade” provide significant levels of nutrients for good health. Rejuvenate! Lemonade provides even greater nutritional power.

You’ll notice Rejuvenate! superfood also provides other nutrients like spirulina (blue-green algae), natural seaweeds (good source of natural iodine and other minerals), rice bran solubles (source of antioxidants like tocotrienols), and chia seeds (source of essential fats, fiber, and other nutrients).

Beyond chlorella, Rejuvenate! superfood includes other high-density sources of dietary nucleic acids like Chlorella Growth Factor (CGF) (nucleic-acid rich extract from chlorella), nutritional yeast, and yeast RNA. NOTES ON GRADE B MAPLE SYRUP, SQUEEZING LEMONS, ETC.

For individuals concerned about blood sugar issues, you can simply use less maple syrup. That is, start with maybe 1–3 Tbsp of maple syrup and adjust accordingly depending on blood glucose or glycemic symptoms. In fact, one of the reasons we recommend grade B maple syrup is because it is contains more minerals than grade A maple syrup.

Grade B maple syrup not only is visibly darker and richer than grade A, but also due to its higher nutrient content produces fewer glycemic effects. This is especially true when it’s combined with Rejuvenate!™ superfood, which includes fiber from chia seeds, rice bran solubles, etc.

Another option for improving glycemic effects is to replace maple syrup with organic blackstrap molasses. Molasses works extremely well in Rejuvenate! Lemonade. The taste is different and distinct, but typically it grows on you. For individuals who are sugar-sensitive, hypoglycemic, or tend toward low blood sugar, using molasses may be the best way to enjoy this recipe.

The maple syrup in this recipe also allows you to control calorie intake. Typically, lemonade diets are reducing diets. That is, they cleanse the body, give it a break from digesting solid foods, and support weight loss. Yet, by adjusting the amount of maple syrup in the recipe, you can encourage weight loss, maintain weight, or actually increase body weight.

Most people are not seeking to gain weight, but it’s something of which to be aware when using Rejuvenate! Lemonade for cleansing purposes. That is, don’t overdo maple syrup if you wish either to lose or just maintain weight.

Finally, we always recommend using fresh-squeezed lemons (or limes) to make Rejuvenate! Lemonade. I own a medium-size “Orange-X” citrus press, which is highly effective at making fast work of juicing lemons and limes (or other citrus fruits). I use it most during my semi-annual Rejuvenate! Lemonade flushes. Or when there’s company or I’m making larger quantities to share with friends.

For smaller amounts of lemon juice, a small hand juicer (ceramic, glass, or steel) works nicely. Or simply hand-squeeze lemons half-cut or wedged directly into your jar, glass, or pitcher.

If you are traveling or otherwise unable to squeeze fresh citrus for the recipe, then you can use an organic 100% lemon or lime juice, such as Santa Cruz brand lemon juice available in glass bottles. It won’t taste as fresh, and nutrients like enzymes and vitamins will be missing or lowered. But it is viable alternative when you have no other choice.

REDISCOVERING AN ORIGINAL REJUVENATE! WRITEUP

I recently came across a writeup about Rejuvenate!™ I posted on the HPDI website when we launched original Rejuvenate! superfood (about 2007). HIGH-RNA, NUCLEIC ACID NUTRITION

The dietary nucleic acids in high-RNA original Rejuvenate! are natural (i.e., not synthetic or genetically engineered) and are naturally found in foods. Foods containing high levels of what are known to scientists as “purines” usually also contain high levels of nucleic acids. These foods include fish, organ meats (like liver), and certain vegetables (such as beans).

High-RNA foods include superfoods such as chlorella, spirulina, and nutritional yeast. Rejuvenate!™ is formulated to supplement a nutritious diet with high-quality nucleic acids from a variety of food sources, as well as provide nutrients supporting the body’s uptake, assimilation, and use of nucleic acids.

Studies prove the rejuvenating and restorative effects of dietary nucleic acids. Dr. Benjamin S. Frank’s bestselling Dr. Frank’s No-Aging Diet: Eat and Grow Younger (1976) documented his experience with thousands of patients, who experienced rejuvenated appearance (including smoother skin, brighter eyes), greater strength, increased lung power (and improved breathing), more endurance, and greater ability to tolerate temperature extremes (e.g., resistance to cold).

In Nucleic Acid Nutrition and Therapy (1977), Dr. Frank was the first scientist to propose that exogenous nucleic acids (i.e., nucleic acids provided through diet or nutritional supplements) are actually “essential nutrients” similar to vitamins and minerals. He based this proposal on his long-term observations that very great health benefits were obtained by patients consuming nucleic acids at higher levels than could readily be synthesized in the human body.

Dr. Frank found the benefits patients obtained at higher levels far exceeded the benefits he witnessed in controls or in individuals consuming typical “modern” diets. He observed that modern diets lack nucleic acids due to processing, increased intake of  “fast foods,” and declining consumption of traditional food sources of nucleic acids like organ meats and certain vegetables.

Dr. Frank based his dietary recommendations on fish consumption (especially sardines) which contain the highest levels of nucleic acids among animal foods, and to a lesser extent on beans and certain vegetables. In contrast, Dr. Bernard Jensen built upon Dr. Frank’s work on dietary nucleic acids by expanding our understanding of the single-cell aquatic plant chlorella, which contains the highest levels of nucleic acids among all foods.

Dr. Jensen’s Chlorella: Gem of the Orient (1987) firmly establishes the critical role of nucleic acids in nutrition, and represents his best effort to educate people regarding the primary role nucleic acids play in health, healing, rejuvenation, and longevity. Dr. Jensen investigated the dietary role of chlorella in Eastern cultures including Japan and China, where millions of individuals consume chlorella daily because it is revered as a vitalizing, healing superfood.

WHAT ARE NUCLEIC ACIDS?

INTRODUCING NUCLEIC ACIDS, NUCLEOTIDES, AND NUCLEOSIDES

Nucleic acids are complex, high-molecular-weight, biochemical macromolecules composed of nucleotide chains conveying genetic information. They are involved in many bodily processes, especially energy production and communication within cells (i.e., they enable cells to use energy effectively for greater health). In the cell nucleus, RNA carries out instructions coded in DNA—instructions containing information critical for cell structure and function—which are essential for the very lives of our cells, and thereby for our lives.

When cells receive proper directions and energy to carry them out, they keep us youthful. They truly are today’s “fountain of youth.” Dietary or “exogenous” nucleic acids enable you to increase nucleic acid intake to levels that provide therapeutic benefits. Dr. Frank proposed that nucleic acids are essential nutrients. If this is the case, then receiving and maintaining adequate levels of nucleic acids is very important for the body.

Biochemically, nucleic acids are constructed of three of more nucleotides, which are monomers consisting of three components: a heterocyclic base (either a purine or a pyrimidine), a pentose (i.e., five-carbon) sugar (either ribose or deoxyribose), and a phosphate group.

Nucleotides are the structural units of DNA and RNA, as well as the cofactors coenzyme A (CoA), flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD), flavin mononucleotide (FMN), nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+), and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADP+). Many of these cofactors are used in glycolosis for generating ATP (as part of anaerobic respiration). They are also used in the Krebs cycle (or citric acid cycle), which in aerobic organisms (including humans) is part of a metabolic pathway involved in the conversion of nutrients (proteins, carbohydrates, and fats) into energy (ATP) through a process of cellular respiration.
