ULTIMATE PROTECTOR DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS

Dr. Hank Liers, PhD ultimate protectorIn early 2012 a friend of mine told me about a new product he was taking from a company called LifeVantage. He informed me all he needed to take on a daily basis was one small tablet in order to be protected against free-radical damage of any sort. And that he didn’t even need to take Vitamin C!

I have formulated nutritional supplements for a long time (>25 years), so I knew there was something not quite right about what I was hearing. When I learned he was buying from a multi-level marketing company his story became understandable, but not believable.

I decided I would investigate the product in order to better understand the logic behind it. I watched videos regarding the science underpinning this product, and I read the scientific literature for months.

What I learned was intriguing, so I decided I would formulate a product dealing with free-radical protection that would take the science and the art of formulation to new levels. I would name the product “Ultimate Protector”!!

More recently in early 2019, I decided to upgrade the product because of significant advances in materials and research findings. It is clearer now that most plant polyphenols have Nrf2 activity and often there are many phytochemical (as many as 50 or more) in any specific plant that are both antioxidants and Nrf2 activators. Even well known ingredients such as n-acetyl-l- cysteine, lipoic acid, vitamin C, and black pepper extract exhibit Nrf2 activity. Our upgraded product has been named Ultimate Protector+.

Ultimate Protector+

BACKGROUND

According to Dr. Joe McCord, in the last 10 years or so there have been over 80,000 papers in peer reviewed publications that relate to Nrf2 activators. Many of these have clearly demonstrated that plant polyphenols are perhaps the best way to intake substances that will stimulate the endogenous production of protective enzymes. In fact, many reputable scientists believe the best way to prevent cancer is via the use of plant polyphenols.

There are also many papers in the scientific literature that have shown the consumption of fruits and vegetables (including herbs) that are inherently high in polyphenols to be one of the best ways to improve health and prevent conditions of poor health. Please see my blog article on this subject: “The Amazing Healing Potential of Natural Nrf2 Activators” (http://www.integratedhealthblog.com/amazing-healing-potential-natural-nrf2-activators/).

In the world of nutritional supplements it is not often that significant scientific/clinical studies are conducted on specific products. The reason for this is primarily economic. However, just as in the case of Nrf2 activators, hundreds of thousands of studies have been conducted by organizations around the world that show the benefits of specific ingredients or groups of ingredients, and these ingredients are used in the development of healthful nutritional supplements.

It is laudable that LifeVantage has had a few scientific/clinical studies done on their product containing five specific Nrf2 activators. This positively supports the huge amount of scientific papers on the subject. However, these few studies do not imply it is a better product than products developed using additional carefully-selected ingredients highlighted in the scientific literature. Progress is made continuously in the area of nutritional supplements allowing us to improve on existing products.

As an example of how being aware of the scientific literature on Nrf2 activators, as well as being experienced in the design of groundbreaking new nutritional products, I was recently delighted to observe that high ORAC5.0 values are associated with many of the best Nrf2 activators identified in the scientific literature. This is discussed in my blog article referenced above.

Indeed, this observation is in contrast to the statements by many (even the scientists) that taking antioxidants is unnecessary and perhaps harmful. It appears that these antioxidants may perform double duty by first operating as antioxidants in the body (including the gastrointestinal tract) and in the process become weak pro-oxidants that function as powerful Nrf2 activators. Of course, if you are not aware of ORAC5.0 testing, then it would not be possible to make such an observation.

ULTIMATE PROTECTOR GOALS

My goal when I formulated Ultimate Protector™ was to create a product with three basic functions. That is, 1) a source of non-GMO Vitamin C (1.5 gm/daily serving), 2) provide powerful antioxidant protection via proven high ORAC sources, and 3) a multiple ingredient source of many Nrf2 activators, thereby providing the body with means to produce a wide variety of protective enzymes endogenously.

VITAMIN C IN ULTIMATE PROTECTOR

It is important to realize Vitamin C is a vitamin that is a cofactor in at least eight enzymatic reactions, including several collagen syntheses reactions that when dysfunctional (usually because of lack of Vitamin C) cause the most severe symptoms of scurvy. In animals, these reactions are especially important in wound healing and in preventing bleeding from capillaries. It is important to understand that no other substance can provide these functions.

Vitamin C acts as an electron donor and/or hydrogen donor, and this ability makes it a potent antioxidant. It rapidly reduces superoxide and nitroxide radicals and scavenges hydroxyl, alkoxyl, and peroxyl radicals. It also reacts with non-radical species such as singlet oxygen and hypochlorous acid. It has been observed in in vitro experiments that Vitamin C acts as the first line of defense in the plasma. In order to learn more about the important role of Vitamin C, please see my blog article: “Vitamin C – An Amazing Nutrient” (www.integratedhealthblog.com/vitamin-c-an-amazing-nutrient/).

ORAC5.0 VALUES OF ULTIMATE PROTECTOR

The full spectrum of antioxidants derived from high ORAC fruits, vegetables, and herbs (as well as Vitamin C) provide extremely powerful exogenous sources of protection against oxidative stress. To obtain a quantitative measure of just how powerful these external sources are we elected to conduct ORAC testing.

The fact is that there are a variety of “free radicals” that operate in humans. The most important are the primary radicals hydroxyl, peroxyl, peroxynitrite, singlet oxygen, and superoxide anion. Brunswick Labs has test called ORAC5.0™. This test expands the ORAC platform to measure the antioxidant capacity against each of the five primary reactive oxygen species mentioned above (not just against the peroxyl radical as ORAC does). ORAC5.0™ substantially improves broad-spectrum antioxidant analysis and gives evidence of the diverse antioxidant potential of natural products against radicals.

Brunswick Labs has previously tested Ultimate Protector™ using the ORAC5.0™ tests. The results revealed an incredible overall ORAC5.0 value of 173,000 µmole TE/gram, an exceptionally high value. In addition, the results show that the formula offers excellent protection against all of the five major types of free radicals. Specifically, the results show values of 6,300 (µmole TE/gram) for peroxyl radicals, 5,900 (µmole TE/gram) for hydroxyl radicals, 2,500 (µmole TE/gram) for peroxynitrite, 106,000 (µmole TE/gram) for superoxide anion, and 52,000 (µmole TE/gram) for singlet oxygen.

Currently we are testing Ultimate Protector+ using the ORAC5.0™ (or the new ORAC6.0 test that adds hypochlorite). We will publish the new test results when they available.

Nrf2 CONSIDERATIONS REGARDING ULTIMATE PROTECTOR

In the development of Ultimate Protector+™, I have been able to find an extremely strong ingredient called SFB® (Standardized Fruit Blend) that contains 9 different fruit extracts that have been shown to be very powerful antioxidants and Nrf2 activators. These are details below.

1. SFB® – (Standardized Fruit Blend)

SFB® is a nutritious, non-GMO blend that provides a broad spectrum of polyphenols, anthocyanins, and other antioxidants derived from water and/or ethanol extracts of whole red grape (Vitis vinifera), cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon), pomegranate (Punica granatum) with >75% polyphenols, blueberry (Vaccinium uliginosum), apple (Malus pumilla Mill), mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana), bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillis), chokeberry (Aronia arbutifolia), and goji berry (Lycium barbarum). This powder has an ORAC value in excess of 9,000 µmole TE/g and contains >50% polyphenols.

Polyphenols and anthocyanins are not all created equal. Every fruit, vegetable and herb provides its own set of unique polyphenols and anthocyanins that reside in the body for different lengths of time and in different locations, providing a range of benefits. SFB® has been designed to provide a wide range of plant polyphenols, flavonoids, anthocyanins, catechins, OPCs, zeaxanthin and other carotinoids, etc. Published research associates these plant ingredients with healthy aging, inflammation management, improved blood sugar metabolism, and cardiovascular disease management.

SFB® provides the following benefits: Superior source of natural antioxidants and Nrf2 activators, helps ameliorate the effects of premature aging, promotes cardiovascular health, promotes healthy brain function and mental acuity, promotes healthy vision, promotes healthy blood sugar levels, and is an excellent source of flavonoids and organic acids.

I have prepared detailed blog articles for the ingredients in SFB®. Below these are summarized and links to the articles are provided.

a) Cranberry Extract

Ultimate Protector+ Includes Cranberry

Ultimate Protector+ Includes Cranberry Extract

Cranberry extract is an especially good source of antioxidant polyphenols. In animal studies, the polyphenols in cranberries have been found to decrease levels of total cholesterol and so-called “bad” cholesterol. Cranberries may also inhibit the growth of tumors in human breast tissue and lower the risk of both stomach ulcers and gum disease.

Here is a list of the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory phytonutrients in found in cranberry extract.

Type of Phytonutrient Specific Molecules
Phenolic Acids hydroxybenzoic acids including vanillic acids;
—Phenolic Acids (cont.) hydroxycinnamic acids inculding caffeic,
—Phenolic Acids (cont.) coumaric, cinnamic, and ferulic acid
Proanthocyanidins epicatechin oligomers
Anthocyanins cyanidins, malvidins, and peonidins
Flavonoids quercetin, myricetin, kaempferol
Triterpenoids ursolic acid

OTHER CRANBERRY INFORMATION

    • Cranberries hold significantly high amounts of phenolic flavonoid phytochemicals called oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPC’s). Scientific studies have shown that consumption of the berries have potential health benefits regarding cancer, aging and neurological diseases, inflammation, diabetes, and bacterial infections.
    • Antioxidant compounds in cranberry extract including OPC’s, anthocyanidin flavonoids, cyanidin, peonidin and quercetin may support cardiovascular health by counteracting against cholesterol plaque formation in the heart and blood vessels. Further, these compounds help the human body lower LDL cholesterol levels and increase HDL-good cholesterol levels in the blood.
    • Scientific studies show that cranberry juice consumption offers protection against gram-negative bacterial infections such as E.coli in the urinary system by inhibiting bacterial-attachment to the bladder and urethra.
    • It is known that cranberries turns urine acidic. This, together with the inhibition of bacterial adhesion helps prevent the formation of alkaline (calcium ammonium phosphate) stones in the urinary tract by working against proteus bacterial-infections.
    • In addition, the berries prevent plaque formation on the tooth enamel by interfering with the ability of the gram-negative bacterium, Streptococcus mutans, to stick to the surface. In this way cranberries helps prevent the development of cavities.
    • The berries are also good source of many vitamins like vitamin C, vitamin A, ß-carotene, lutein, zeaxanthin, and folate and minerals like potassium, and manganese.
  • Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) demonstrates cranberry at an ORAC score of 9584 µmol TE units per 100 g, one of the highest in the category of edible berries.

b) Pomegranate Extract

Ultimate Protector+ Includes Pomegranate

Ultimate Protector+ Includes Pomegranate Extract

For thousands of years, the pomegranate has been extensively used as a source of food and medicine. Full of antioxidants, vitamin C and potassium, pomegranate has been used to control body weight, reduce cholesterol, fight against cell damage, and inhibit viral infections. Pomegranate extracts have anti-bacterial effects.

Pomegranates are rich in ellagic acid, gallic acid, lignans, polyphenols and other bioactive compounds, and have been shown to lower blood pressure and enhance vascular function. Furthermore, it can offset some of the negative effects of medications and chemicals. These compounds occur naturally in its peel, seeds, leaf and juice. The seeds are high in p-coumaric acid, plant sterols, tannins and fatty acids. In addition to their antihypertensive effects, they may help reduce blood sugar levels.

Pomegranate fruit is a rounded berry with a thick reddish skin covering approximately 200–1400 white to deep red or purple seeds. Pomegranate seeds are edible and hold strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties due to their high content of hydrolysable tannins and anthocyanins. As compared to the antioxidant activity of vitamin E, β-carotene, and ascorbic acid, the pomegranate antioxidants appear unique due to combinations of a wide array of polyphenols, having a broader range of action against several types of free radicals. As compared to the recognized antioxidants in red wine and green tea, anthocyanins from pomegranate fruit possess significantly higher antioxidant activity.

Pomegranate has been used in various medicinal systems of medicine for the treatment and therapy of a multitude of diseases and ailments. In the ancient Indian medicinal system, i.e., in Ayurvedic medicine, the pomegranate was considered to be a whole pharmacy unto itself. It was recommended to be used as an antiparasitic agent and to treat diarrhea and ulcers. The medicinal properties of pomegranate have sparked significant interest in today’s scientific community as evidenced by the scientific research relating to health benefits of pomegranate that have been published in last few decades.

Studies have shown that pomegranate and its constituents can efficiently affect multiple signaling pathways involved in inflammation, cellular transformation, hyperproliferation, angiogenesis, initiation of tumorigenesis, and eventually suppressing the final steps of tumorigenesis and metastasis. The pomegranate constituents are shown to modulate transcription factors, pro-apoptotic proteins, anti-apoptotic proteins, cell cycle regulator molecules, protein kinases, cell adhesion molecules, pro-inflammatory mediators, and growth factors.

c) Chokeberry (Aronia)

Ultimate Protector+ Includes Chokeberry

Ultimate Protector+ Includes Chokeberry Extract

HEALTH BENEFITS OF CHOKEBERRY (ARONIA)

Aronia melanocarpa (black chokeberry) has attracted scientific interest due to its deep purple, almost black pigmentation that arises from dense contents of polyphenols, especially anthocyanins. Total polyphenol content is 1752 mg per 100 g in fresh berries, anthocyanin content is 1480 mg per 100 g, and proanthocyanidin concentration is 664 mg per 100 g. These values are among the highest measured in plants to date.

The plant produces these pigments mainly in the leaves and skin of the berries to protect the pulp and seeds from constant exposure to ultraviolet radiation and production of free radicals. By absorbing UV rays in the blue-purple spectrum, leaf and skin pigments filter intense sunlight, serve antioxidant functions and thereby have a role assuring regeneration of the species.

Analysis of polyphenols in chokeberries has identified the following individual chemicals (among hundreds known to exist in the plant kingdom): cyanidin-3-galactoside, cyanidin-3-arabinoside, quercetin-3-glycoside, epicatechin, caffeic acid, delphinidin, petunidin, pelargonidin, peonidin, and malvidin. All these except caffeic acid are members of the flavonoid category of phenolics.

In a standard measurement of antioxidant strength, the oxygen radical absorbance capacity or ORAC, demonstrates aronia to have one of the highest values yet recorded for a fruit — 16,062 micro moles of Trolox Eq. per 100 g. The components contributing to this high measurement were both anthocyanins and proanthocyanidins, with the proanthocyanidin level “among the highest in foods”, which may explain their potent astringent taste.

d) Goji Berry

Ultimate Protector+ Includes Goji Berry

Ultimate Protector+ Includes Goji Berry Extract

Goji Berries contain abundant polysaccharides (LBPs, comprising 5%–8% of the dried fruits), scopoletin (6-methoxy-7-hydroxycoumarin, also named chrysatropic acid, ecopoletin, gelseminic acid, and scopoletol), the glucosylated precursor, and stable vitamin C analog 2-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-L-ascorbic acid, carotenoids (zeaxanthin and β-carotene), betaine, cerebroside, β-sitosterol, flavonoids, amino acids, minerals, and vitamins (in particular, riboflavin, thiamin, and ascorbic acid).

The predominant carotenoid is zeaxanthin, which exists mainly as dipalmitate (also called physalien or physalin). The content of vitamin C (up to 42 mg/100 g) in goji berry (also known as wolfberry) is comparable to that of fresh lemon fruits. As to the seeds, they contain zeaxanthin (83%), β-cryptoxanthin (7%), β-carotene (0.9%), and mutatoxanthin (1.4%), as well as some minor carotenoids.

In fact, increasing lines of experimental studies have revealed that L. barbarum berries have a wide array of pharmacological activities, which is thought to be mainly due to its high LBPs content. Water-soluble LBPs are obtained using an extraction process that removes the lipid soluble components such as zeaxanthin and other carotenoids with alcohol. LBPs are estimated to comprise 5%–8% of LBFs and have a molecular weight ranging from 24 kDa to 241 kDa. LBPs consist of a complex mixture of highly branched and only partly characterized polysaccharides and proteoglycans.

The glycosidic part accounts, in most cases, for about 90%–95% of the mass and consists of arabinose, glucose, galactose, mannose, rhamnose, xylose, and galacturonic acid. LBPs are considered the most important functional constituents in LBFs. Different fractions of LBPs have different activities and the galacturonic acid content is an imperative factor for activities of LBP. The bioactivities of polysaccharides are often in reverse proportion with their molecular weights. Increasing lines of evidence from both preclinical and clinical studies support the medicinal, therapeutic, and health-promoting effects of LBPs.

e) Mangosteen

Ultimate Protector+ Includes Mangosteen

Ultimate Protector+ Includes Mangosteen Extract

The Mangosteen extract in Ultimate Protector+ has been extracted with non-GMO food grade ethanol and distilled water. Testing has indicated the product contains over 10% polyphenols.

Mangosteen extract in obtained from the skin and whole fruit for which numerous biological activities have been reported including: antimutagenic, antibacterial, hypocholesterolemic, antioxidant, and protective against tumorigenesis.

Mangosteen contains nutrients with antioxidant capacity, such as vitamin C and folate. Plus, it provides xanthones — a unique type of plant compound known to have strong antioxidant properties. In several test-tube and animal studies, the antioxidant activity of xanthones has resulted in anti-inflammatory, anticancer, anti-aging, heart protective, and antidiabetic effects.

Additionally, some research suggests that certain plant compounds in mangosteen may have antibacterial properties — which could benefit your immune health by combating potentially harmful bacteria. In a 30-day study in 59 people, those taking a mangosteen-containing supplement experienced reduced markers of inflammation and significantly greater increases in healthy immune cell numbers compared to those taking a placebo.

f) Apple Extract

Ultimate Protector+ Includes Apple

Apples contain a large concentration of flavonoids, as well as a variety of other phytochemicals, and the concentration of these phytochemicals may depend on many factors, such as cultivar of the apple, harvest and storage of the apples, and processing of the apples. The concentration of phytochemicals also varies greatly between the apple peels and the apple flesh.

Some of the most well studied antioxidant compounds in apples include quercetin-3-galactoside, quercetin-3-glucoside, quercetin-3-rhamnoside, catechin, epicatechin, procyanidin, cyanidin-3-galactoside, coumaric acid, chlorogenic acid, gallic acid, and phloridzin. Recently researchers have examined the average concentrations of the major phenolic compounds in six cultivars of apples. They found that the average phenolic concentrations among the six cultivars were: quercetin glycosides, 13.2 mg/100 g fruit; vitamin C, 12.8 mg/100 g fruit; procyanidin B, 9.35 mg/100 g fruit; chlorogenic acid, 9.02 mg/100 g fruit; epicatechin, 8.65 mg/100 g fruit; and phloretin glycosides, 5.59 mg/100 g fruit.

The compounds most commonly found in apple peels consist of the procyanidins, catechin, epicatechin, chlorogenic acid, phloridzin, and the quercetin conjugates. In the apple flesh, there is some catechin, procyanidin, epicatechin, and phloridzin, but these compounds are found in much lower concentrations than in the peels. Quercetin conjugates are found exclusively in the peel of the apples. Chlorogenic acid tends to be higher in the flesh than in the peel.

Because the apple peels contain more antioxidant compounds, especially quercetin, apple peels may have higher antioxidant activity and higher bioactivity than the apple flesh. Research showed that apples without the peels had less antioxidant activity than apples with the peels. Apples with the peels were also better able to inhibit cancer cell proliferation when compared to apples without the peels. More recent work has shown that apple peels contain anywhere from two to six times (depending on the variety) more phenolic compounds than in the flesh, and two to three times more flavonoids in the peels when compared to the flesh. The antioxidant activity of these peels was also much greater, ranging from two to six times greater in the peels when compared to the flesh, depending on the variety of the apple. This work is supported a study which found that rats consuming apple peels showed greater inhibition of lipid peroxidation and greater plasma antioxidant capacity when compared to rats fed apple flesh.

Many of these phytochemicals from apples have been widely studied, and many potential health benefits have been attributed to these specific phytochemicals. The procyanidins, epicatechin and catechin, have strong antioxidant activity and have been found to inhibit low density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation in vitro. In mice, catechin inhibits intestinal tumor formation and delays tumors onset. One study found that chlorogenic acid has very high alkyl peroxyl radical (ROO•) scavenging activity. Compared to about 18 other antioxidant compounds (including quercetin, gallic acid, α-tocopherol), chlorogenic was second only to rutin. Since ROO• may enhance tumor promotion and carcinogenesis, chlorogenic acid may add to the protective effect of apples against cancer. Chlorogenic acid has been found to inhibit 8-dehydroxy-deoxyguanosine formation in cellular DNA in a rat model following treatment with 4-nitroquinoline-1-oxide.

Quercetin is also a strong antioxidant, and is thought to have potential protective effects against both cancer and heart disease. Briefly, quercetin has been found to down regulate expression of mutant p53 in breast cancer cells, arrest human leukemic T-cells in G1, inhibit tyrosine kinase, and inhibit heat shock proteins. Quercetin has protected Caco-2 cells from lipid peroxidation induced by hydrogen peroxide and Fe2+. In mice liver treated with ethanol, quercetin decreased lipid oxidation and increased glutathione, protecting the liver from oxidative damage. Recently, it has been found that high doses of quercetin inhibit cell proliferation in colon carcinoma cell lines and in mammary adenocarcinoma cell lines, but at low doses quercetin increased cell proliferation (20% in colon cancer cells and 100% in breast cancer cells). However, low doses of quercetin (10 uM) inhibited cell proliferation in Mol-4 Human Leukemia cells and also induced apoptosis. Quercetin inhibited intestinal tumor growth in mice, but not in rats. Low levels of quercetin inhibited platelet aggregation, calcium mobilization, and tyrosine protein phosphorylation in platelets. Modulation of platelet activity may help prevent cardiovascular disease.

g) Blueberry and Bilberry Extract

wild bilberry and wild blueberry
Wild bilberry and wild blueberry provide Nrf2 activators.

The key compounds in bilberry fruit are called anthocyanins and anthocyanosides. These compounds help build strong blood vessels and improve circulation to all areas of the body. They also prevent blood platelets from clumping together (helping to reduce the risk of blood clots), and they have antioxidant properties (preventing or reducing damage to cells from free radicals). Anthocyanins boost the production of rhodopsin, a pigment that improves night vision and helps the eye adapt to light changes.

Bilberry fruit is also rich in tannins, a substance that acts as an astringent. The tannins have anti-inflammatory properties and may help control diarrhea.

Bilberries have been shown to have the highest Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) rating of more than 20 fresh fruits and berries. The antioxidant properties of bilberries were shown to be even stronger than those of cranberries, raspberries, strawberries, plums, or cultivated blueberries.

The antioxidant powers and health benefits of bilberries and blueberries can be attributed to a number of remarkable compounds contained in them, including the following:

  • Anthocyanins
    • malvidins
    • delphinidins
    • pelargonidins
    • cyanidins
    • peonidins
  • Hydroxycinnamic acids
    • caffeic acids
    • ferulic acids
    • coumaric acids
  • Hydroxybenzoic acids
    • gallic acids
    • procatchuic acids
  • Flavonols
    • kaempferol
    • quercetin
    • myricetin
  • Other phenol-related phytonutrients
    • pterostilbene
    • resveratrol
  • Other nutrients
    • lutein
    • zeaxanthin
    • Vitamin K
    • Vitamin C
    • manganese

Other Ingredients

As with the original Ultimate Protector formula, we have included Curcumin (95% min. curcuminoids) and Trans-resveratrol (greater than 98%) because they are important in the Nrf2 and antioxidant literature. In addition, we have included Green Tea extract (high in EGCG) and VinCare® Whole Grape Extract (also present in SFB® and is very high in oligomeric proanthocyanidins – OPCs).

These additional ingredients are detailed below:

1) Curcumin

Ultimate Protector+ Includes Curcumin

Ultimate Protector+ Includes Curcumin

We have included Curcumin (95% curcuminoids in ULTIMATE PROTECTOR™. This ingredient contains three main chemical compounds – Curcumin, Demethoxycurcumin and Bisdemethoxycurcumin – collectively known as Curcuminoids and all derived from Turmeric. Curcumin has been shown to be one of the most potent Nrf2 transcription factor activators. Studies have reported that curcumin and turmeric protect the liver against several toxicants both in vitro and in vivo. A number of reports showed the curative action of turmeric and curcuminoids. Curcumin is a potent scavenger of free radicals such as superoxide anion radicals, hydroxyl radicals, and nitrogen dioxide radicals. It exerts powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

2) Trans-Resveratrol (98% from Polygonum cuspidatum – giant knotweed)

Knotweed (Polygonum cuspidatum) is a major source for resveratrol.

Trans-resveratrol provides antioxidant protection, boosts cellular energy, and balances the immune system. It has been proven in studies to activate the SIRT1 longevity gene and enhance cellular productivity. Several research studies have shown that trans-resveratrol activates Nrf2 transcription factor, significantly modulates biomarkers of bone metabolism, inhibits pro-inflammatory enzymes such as COX-1 and COX-2, and exhibits cardioprotective effects, neuroprotective properties, and caloric restrictive behavior. Trans-resveratrol has shown the ability to increase the number of mitochondria thereby increasing total daily energy. Studies have shown that trans-resveratrol promotes an increase in mitochondrial function. Increased mitochondrial function translates into an increase in energy availability, improved aerobic capacity, and enhanced sensorimotor function. Trans-resveratrol has an ORAC value of 31,000 µmole TE/g.

3) Green Tea Extract

Ultimate Protector+ Includes Green Tea Extract

Ultimate Protector+ Includes Green Tea Extract

Green Tea Extract contains highly bioavailable bioflavonoid complexes that in research studies have been shown to have powerful antioxidant capability. Green tea extract is obtained from the unfermented leaves of Camellia sinensis for which numerous biological activities have been reported including: cell protective, antimicrobial, and antioxidant. The green tea extract in Ultimate Protector is extracted is extracted by non-GMO ethanol and distilled water and contains ~ 90% polyphenols and 50% epigallocatechingallate (EGCG).

Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is the most abundant catechin compound in green tea. It is well established that EGCG is a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent. Epidemiological studies show that consumption of 100 or more mg of EGCG per day is beneficial, as it is the most potent Nrf2 activator among all green tea catechins. EGCG exhibits robust diffusion through bodily tissues, including the endothelium of the blood brain barrier.

EGCG has the capacity to activate Nrf2/ARE and induce Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) expression. Several studies have shown that EGCG can also interact with kinases, causing the disassociation of Nrf2/Keap1 complex.

Protective effects of EGCG have been reported against ischemia/reperfusion injury. Administration of EGCG showed improved neurologic scores, reduced infarct volume, and ameliorated neuronal apoptosis due to increased GSH biosynthesis (via Nrf2 activation) and decreased ROS content. By inducing the expression of Nrf2 and HO-1, EGCG increases important endogenous antioxidants in microglial cells.

4) VinCare® whole grape extract (seed, pulp, and skin)

Ultimate Protector+ Includes Whole Grape Extract

Ultimate Protector+ Includes Whole Grape Extract

Whole Grape Extract contains highly bioavailable bioflavonoid complexes that in research studies have been shown to have powerful antioxidant capability. The Oligomeric Proanthocyanidins (OPCs) in grape extract are able to strengthen collagen fibers in aging or damaged connective tissue and can act as a preventative against connective tissue degradation. Some research indicates that anthocyanidins, which are found in extracts of grape seed, skin, and stems (but not in grape seed extract), can reduce oxidized glutathione while at the same time become reduced themselves. In addition, extracts of grape skin and pulp (but not those of grape seed extract) contain trans-resveratrol that has been shown to have cell protective effects.

Grape seed extract has been reported to demonstrate a remarkable spectrum of biological, pharmacological and therapeutic properties against oxidative stress. The antioxidative activities of grape seed extract have been found to be much stronger than those of vitamins C and E. Studies have indicated that grape seed extract showed a protective effect on cardiovascular disease, nephropathy, atherosclerosis, and neuropathy, among other conditions.

Vincare® contains ~80% polypnenols and has an ORAC value of about 19,000 µmole TE/g. ORAC 5.0 testing of grape seed extract exhibits one of the highest values of any tested material at about 100,000 µmole TE/g.

It has been shown that grape seed OPCs activate nuclear erythroid2-related factor2 (Nrf2), which is a key antioxidative transcription factor, with the concomitant elevation of downstream hemeoxygenase-1 (HO-1). PREVENTING FREE RADICAL DAMAGE WITH ULTIMATE PROTECTOR+

Back in 2012, I learned about Nrf2 activators and was excited about pursuing the development of a supplement that would incorporate the new knowledge we were learning into a effective product for preventing free radical damage. At that time, I published two articles: New Directions for Preventing Free Fadical Damage and Natural Phytochemical Nrf2 Activators for Chemoprevention. I started working on a new Nrf2-activator formula I called Ultimate Protector that incorporated many of the ideas contained in these articles. The product was introduced November 2012.

More recently, in early 2019, I decided to upgrade the product using new information and ingredients. The upgraded product is called Ultimate Protector+. In this article, I provide new details of our design logic and product ingredients. I expect the new formula to be released in July 2019.

Ultimate Protector+

Ultimate Protector+ is new and improved!

PREVENTING FREE RADICAL DAMAGE WITH ULTIMATE PROTECTOR+

Ultimate Protector+™ is a unique cell protection formula that simultaneously meets the needs for high levels of non-GMO Vitamin C, full spectrum antioxidants (high ORAC values), and protective enzyme activators (Nrf2 activators) in a single product. This potent combination of characteristics distinguishes the formula because no other single product available today offers such complete protection. This is the single best formula for preventing free radical damage that is available.

Ultimate Protector+™ provides extremely high levels of natural antioxidants, including high levels of ingredients such as polyphenols, flavonoids, anthocyanidins, oligomeric proanthocyanidins, catechins, curcuminoids, pterostilbene, resveratrol, chlorogenic acid, punicalagins, zeaxanthin and other carotenoids that act powerfully as antioxidants. These antioxidants come from more than 12 plant-based ingredients with demonstrated free-radical quenching capacity. These “exogenous” food-based antioxidants (supplied from outside the body) provide you with immense oxidative defenses that can be used to defend against free-radical assault.

Ultimate Protector+™ contains USP-grade non-GMO Vitamin C , SFB® standardized fruit blend (~50% polyphenols, high-ORAC powder: 9,000 µmole TE/g) from Grape, Cranberry, Pomegranate, Blueberry, Apple, Mangosteen, Bilberry, Chokeberry, and Goji Berry), Curcumin (standardized extract with 95% curcuminoids), Trans-Resveratrol (98% from Giant Knotweed), Green Tea Extract (90% polyphenols, 50% EGCG), VinCare® Whole Grape Extract (>80% polyphenols, ORAC>19,000 µmole TE/g), Calcium Malate, Magnesium Malate, and Bioperine® (a patented black pepper extract that enhances absorption of all ingredients and is a known Nrf2 activator).

Ultimate Protector+™ is contained in a capsule suitable for vegetarians (i.e., a veggie cap) and contains no magnesium stearate.

NUTRITIONAL CONSIDERATIONS AND APPLICATIONS

Ultimate Protector+™ satisfies three distinct needs:

1) The need for a non-GMO Vitamin C product. That is, a Vitamin C formula that avoids protein from genetically modified sources such as corn, potatoes, or beets.

2) The need for a single, powerful antioxidant formula for preventing free radical damage. That is, a single, easy-to-take antioxidant formula offering a broad range of extremely high-ORAC plant source antioxidants. These antioxidants should protect against the full range of free radicals found in the human body including: superoxide anion (O2·-), peroxyl radicals (ROO·), hydroxyl radicals (HO·), singlet oxygen (1O2), and peroxynitrite (ONOO-).

3) The need for a supplement providing a full spectrum of Nrf2 activators. That is, a supplement providing a wide range of natural Nrf2 transcription factor activators that allow the body to make its own antioxidant enzymes (e.g., superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase, hemeoxygenase, and glutathione peroxidase). Scientific research has shown that these are found naturally in many fruits, vegetable, and herbs. These ingredients provide a wide range of Nrf2 activators that result in significantly high levels of the endogenously produced antioxidant enzymes.

The ways Ultimate Protector+™ satisfies these three needs are discussed below:

1) NON-GMO VITAMIN C / ASCORBIC ACID

High-quality, USP grade Vitamin C has been obtained historically from corn, potatoes, and/or beets. Unfortunately, many of these sources have to a large extent gone to genetically modified (GMO) variants. However, with highly refined production methods and the use of PCR testing, we have been able to obtain final products that are free from GMOs.

In nature, Vitamin C is found generally in plant sources containing polyphenols. Vitamin C and polyphenols work together to provide a high level of antioxidant protection and they support the function of each other in the process. For example, Vitamin C is needed by the body to produce collagen and certain polyphenols (especially oligomeric proanthocyanidins) (OPCs) crosslink the collagen and make it stronger.

2) EXTREMELY HIGH ORAC SOURCES

Free radicals are reactive species that can have adverse effects on normal physiological functions. Studies associate the five major types of free radicals (i.e., hydroxyl, peroxyl, peroxynitrite, singlet oxygen, and superoxide anion) with health conditions such as cardiovascular disease, hypertension, breakdown of vital proteins, chronic inflammation, Alzheimer’s disease, and certain cancers. Avoiding free radical damage is the goal.

Antioxidants function as a vital line of defense against free radicals by blocking their attack on DNA, vital proteins, lipids, and amino acids. Until now, efforts to identify the effect of antioxidants on all five types of free radicals were constrained by limited testing procedures. However, new technological developments have resulted in a comprehensive testing method called the Total ORAC5.0™ assay. Because of the development of the Total ORAC5.0™ test, it is now possible to target and measure the effects of antioxidants on the five major types of free radicals found in the body.

We are currently in the process of testing Ultimate Protector+™ using this new ORAC5.0™ assay. We are confident that our formula offers protection against these five major types of free-radicals because we combine a wide range of extremely high-ORAC fruit, vegetable, and herbal blends. As soon as the results are available (in July 2019), we will update this article with the findings.

3) NRF2 TRANSCRIPTION FACTOR ACTIVATORS

In order to survive under a variety of environmental or intracellular stresses, our cells have developed highly efficient protective mechanisms to protect themselves from oxidative or electrophilic challenges. Proteins that comprise phase II detoxification and antioxidant enzymes provide an enzymatic line of defense against reactive oxygen species (ROS). These enzymes include superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione S-transferase (GST), and glutamate cysteine ligase.

Induction of phase II and antioxidant enzymes are regulated at the DNA/gene level by an antioxidant responsive element (ARE). ARE-mediated gene expression plays a central role in the cellular defense against cellular oxidative damage. Experimental evidence supports the view that induction of ARE-mediated cytoprotective enzymes is a critical and sufficient mechanism to enable protection against disease provoked by environmental and endogenous insults.

One of the key ARE-binding transcription factors is Nrf2. Induction of cytoprotective enzymes in response to ROS, electrophiles, and phytochemicals is a cellular event that is highly dependent on Nrf2 protein. By activating Nrf2 signaling, phytochemicals can increase cellular detoxification and antioxidant enzymes, thereby enhancing removal of ROS and toxic chemicals and preventing disease. Numerous research studies carried out over the last 15 years have demonstrated the effectiveness of a very wide range of Nrf2 activators extracted from fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

For example, a study with sulforaphane (an isothiocyanate present abundantly in cruciferous vegetables) shows that oral administration of this phytochemical can effectively block benzo[a]pyrene-induced forestomach tumors in mice. This protective effect was abrogated in mice that could not produce Nrf2. This supports the critical role of phase II detoxification and antioxidant enzymes in the prevention of carcinogenesis by chemopreventive agents.

Nrf2 is normally bound in the cytoplasm of cells to a protein called KEAP1. However, when an appropriate phytochemical agent attaches to a kinase receptor on the cell wall a phosphate group is released that causes the Nrf2 to be released. Also, there are other mechanisms that allow Nrf2 to be released from KEAP1. The released Nrf2 then migrates into the cell nucleus and causes an antioxidant enzyme (e.g., superoxide dismutase (SOD)) to be fabricated and released. This endogenously produced enzyme then can protect against ROS, electrophiles, and other toxic agents.

In practical experience, it has been found that a combination of multiple polyphenols works significantly better than single ingredients. In fact, in one experiment it was found that a combination of five ingredients all known to be Nrf2 activators was 18 times more effective than any single ingredient. Furthermore, it was found that this combination of five ingredients was able to increase levels of SOD by 30% and catalase by 56% after 120 days of taking the combination.

In view of the considerations above, we include a wide range of Nrf2 activators in Ultimate Protector+™. These include a large variety of freeze-dried and concentrated fruits, vegetables, and herbs. These include Grape, Cranberry, Pomegranate, Blueberry, Apple, Mangosteen, Bilberry, Chokeberry, Goji Berry), Curcumin (standardized extract with 95% curcuminoids), Trans-Resveratrol (98% from Giant Knotweed), Green Tea Extract (93% polyphenols, 50% EGCG), VinCare® Whole Grape Extract (>80% polyphenols, ORAC>19,000 µmole TE/g)

Ultimate Protector+™ includes the following phytonutrients in its array of freeze-dried and concentrated fruits, vegetables, and herbs: polyphenols, flavonoids, anthocyanins, catechins, proanthocyanins, ellagic acid, xanthines, chlorogenic acid, pterostilbenes, resveratrol, phloridzin, quercetin, zeaxanthin, carotinoids, polysaccharides, quinic acid, and more.

The phytochemical ingredients in Ultimate Protector+™ are discussed below:

1. SFB® – (Standardized Fruit Blend)

SFB® is a nutritious, non-GMO blend that provides a broad spectrum of polyphenols, anthocyanins, and other antioxidants derived from water and/or ethanol extracts of grape (Vitis vinifera), cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon), pomegranate (Punica granatum) with >75% polyphenols, blueberry (Vaccinium uliginosum), apple (Malus pumilla Mill), mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana), bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillis), chokeberry (Aronia arbutifolia), and goji berry (Lycium barbarum). This powder has an ORAC value in excess of 9,000 µmole TE/g and contains 50% polyphenols.

Below some of these are summarized and links to the articles are provided.

a) Cranberry Extract

Phenolic Acids hydroxybenzoic acids including vanillic acids;

    • The berries are also good source of many vitamins like vitamin C, vitamin A, ß-carotene, lutein, zea-xanthin, and folate and minerals like potassium, and manganese.

Ultimate Protector+ Includes Pomegranate

Ultimate Protector+ Includes Chokeberry

Ultimate Protector+ Includes Goji Berry

Ultimate Protector+ Includes Mangosteen

    • manganese

2) Curcumin

3) Trans-Resveratrol (98% from Polygonum cuspidatum – giant knotweed)

giant knotweed resveratrol

4) Green Tea Extract

5) VinCare® whole grape extract (seed, pulp, and skin)

Click here to view an excellent article entitled Proanthocyanidins [OPCs] against Oxidative Stress: From Molecular Mechanisms to Clinical Applications.

ULTIMATE PROTECTOR+ INGREDIENTS – CURCUMIN

Dr. Hank Liers, PhD biography about us HPDI integratedhealth formulator founder CEO scientist physicist wild bilberry and wild blueberry

Ultimate Protector+ contains curcuminoids (greater than 95% from turmeric), as well as extracts from 12 different fruits, vegetables, and herbs. Each of these ingredients contain substances that may be considered to be polyphenols, antioxidants, and Nrf2 activators. In this article I will explore the ingredient curcuminoids. Curcuminoids are added as a separate ingredient in Ultimate Protector+.

Ultimate Protector+ Includes Curcumin

Ultimate Protector+ Includes Curcumin

Curcuminoids are the major active component of turmeric, a yellow compound isolated from the plant Curcuma longa (a member of the ginger family) and has been used for centuries in traditional medicines. Curcuminoids in turmeric include curcumin, desmethoxycurcumin, and bisdesmethoxycurcumin (these are standardized in the Sabinsa Curcumin C3 Complex® ingredient).

turmeric plant curcuminoids

The turmeric plant produces beautiful flowers

Extensive research over the past 30 years indicates that these molecules can provide positive benefits against a wide range of health issues related to cell function, lungs, liver, nervous system, joint function, metabolism, and cardiovascular system. Numerous lines of evidence indicate that curcuminoids are highly pleiotropic with anti-inflammatory, hypoglycemic, antioxidant, wound healing, and antimicrobial activities.

Curcuminoids exert both direct and indirect antioxidant effects by scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS) and inducing the expression of cytoprotective proteins in an Nrf2-dependent way. It is considered a bifunctional antioxidant. The nuclear-factor-erythroid-2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), is a ubiquitous master transcription factor which induces the endogenous production of cytoprotective proteins/enzymes through binding to antioxidant response elements (AREs) at the DNA/gene level.

Pharmacological basis for the role of curcumin in chronic diseases: an age-old spice with modern targets

Abstract

Curcumin (diferuloylmethane), a yellow pigment in the spice turmeric (also called curry powder), has been used for centuries as a treatment for inflammatory diseases. Extensive research within the past two decades has shown that curcumin mediates its anti-inflammatory effects through the downregulation of inflammatory transcription factors (such as nuclear factor kappaB), enzymes (such as cyclooxygenase 2 and 5 lipoxygenase) and cytokines (such as tumor necrosis factor, interleukin 1 and interleukin 6). Because of the crucial role of inflammation in most chronic diseases, the potential of curcumin has been examined in neoplastic, neurological, cardiovascular, pulmonary and metabolic diseases. The pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of curcumin have been examined in animals and in humans. Various pharmacological aspects of curcumin in vitro and in vivo are discussed in detail here.

Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of curcumin

Abstract

Curcumin, a yellow pigment from Curcuma longa, is a major component of turmeric and is commonly used as a spice and food-coloring agent. It is also used as a cosmetic and in some medical preparations. The desirable preventive or putative therapeutic properties of curcumin have also been considered to be associated with its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Because free-radical-mediated peroxidation of membrane lipids and oxidative damage of DNA and proteins are believed to be associated with a variety of chronic pathological complications such as cancer, atherosclerosis, and neurodegenerative diseases, curcumin is thought to play a vital role against these pathological conditions. The anti-inflammatory effect of curcumin is most likely mediated through its ability to inhibit cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), lipoxygenase (LOX), and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS). COX-2, LOX, and iNOS are important enzymes that mediate inflammatory processes. Improper upregulation of COX-2 and/or iNOS has been associated with the pathophysiology of certain types of human cancer as well as inflammatory disorders. Because inflammation is closely linked to tumor promotion, curcumin with its potent anti-inflammatory property is anticipated to exert chemopreventive effects on carcinogenesis. Hence, the past few decades have witnessed intense research devoted to the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of curcumin. In this review, we describe both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of curcumin, the mode of action of curcumin, and its therapeutic usage against different pathological conditions.

Curcumin: The Indian Solid Gold

Abstract

Turmeric, derived from the plant Curcuma longa, is a gold-colored spice commonly used in the Indian subcontinent, not only for health care but also for the preservation of food and as a yellow dye for textiles. Curcumin, which gives the yellow color to turmeric, was first isolated almost two centuries ago, and its structure as diferuloylmethane was determined in 1910. Since the time of Ayurveda (1900 Bc) numerous therapeutic activities have been assigned to turmeric for a wide variety of diseases and conditions, including those of the skin, pulmonary, and gastrointestinal systems, aches, pains, wounds, sprains, and liver disorders. Extensive research within the last half century has proven that most of these activities, once associated with turmeric, are due to curcumin. Curcumin has been shown to exhibit antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, and anticancer activities and thus has a potential against various malignant diseases, diabetes, allergies, arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease, and other chronic illnesses. These effects are mediated through the regulation of various transcription factors, growth factors, inflammatory cytokines, protein kinases, and other enzymes. Curcumin exhibits activities similar to recently discovered tumor necrosis factor blockers (e.g., HUMIRA, REMICADE, and ENBREL), a vascular endothelial cell growth factor blocker (e.g., AVASTIN), human epidermal growth factor receptor blockers (e.g., ERBITUX, ERLOTINIB, and GEFTINIB), and a HER2 blocker (e.g., HERCEPTIN). Considering the recent scientific bandwagon that multitargeted therapy is better than monotargeted therapy for most diseases, curcumin can be considered an ideal “Spice for Life”.

Curcumin decreases oxidative stress in mitochondria isolated from liver and kidneys of high-fat diet-induced obese mice

Abstract

Oxidative stress plays a key role in obesity and diabetes-related mitochondrial dysfunction. Mitochondrial dysfunction is characterized by increased oxidative damage, nitric oxide (NO) synthesis, and a reduced ratio of adenosine-5′-triphosphate (ATP) production/oxygen consumption. Curcumin represents a potential antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent. In this study, our objective was to determine the effect of curcumin treatment on oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction in high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obese mice (OM). These results suggest that curcumin treatment increased oxygen consumption and significantly decreased lipid and protein oxidation levels in liver mitochondria isolated from HFD-induced OM compared with those in the untreated OM (UOM). In kidney mitochondria, curcumin treatment significantly increased oxygen consumption and decreased lipid and protein peroxidation levels in HFD-induced OM when compared with those in UOM. Curcumin treatment neither has any effect on body weight gain nor have any effects on mitochondrial NO synthesis. These findings suggest that obesity induces oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction, whereas curcumin may have a protective role against obesity-induced oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction.

Curcumin for radiation dermatitis: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial of thirty breast cancer patients.

From: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23745991

Abstract

Radiation dermatitis occurs in approximately 95% of patients receiving radiotherapy (RT) for breast cancer. We conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial to assess the ability of curcumin to reduce radiation dermatitis severity in 30 breast cancer patients. Eligible patients were adult females with noninflammatory breast cancer or carcinoma in situ prescribed RT without concurrent chemotherapy. Randomized patients took 2.0 grams of curcumin or placebo orally three times per day (i.e., 6.0 grams daily) throughout their course of RT. Weekly assessments included Radiation Dermatitis Severity (RDS) score, presence of moist desquamation, redness measurement, McGill Pain Questionnaire-Short Form and Symptom Inventory questionnaire. The 30 evaluable patients were primarily white (90%) and had a mean age of 58.1 years. Standard pooled variances t test showed that curcumin reduced RDS at end of treatment compared to placebo (mean RDS = 2.6 vs. 3.4; P = 0.008). Fisher’s exact test revealed that fewer curcumin-treated patients had moist desquamation (28.6% vs. 87.5%; P = 0.002). No significant differences were observed between arms for demographics, compliance, radiation skin dose, redness, pain or symptoms. In conclusion, oral curcumin, 6.0 g daily during radiotherapy, reduced the severity of radiation dermatitis in breast cancer patients.

Curcumin attenuates insulin resistance in hepatocytes by inducing Nrf2 nuclear translocation

From: http://europepmc.org/abstract/med/22024084

Abstract

BACKGROUND/AIMS: NF-E2-Related Factor-2 (Nrf2) is a transcription factor that plays a crucial role in the cellular protection against oxidative stress. Curcumin has been reported to induce Nrf2 nuclear translocation and upregulate the expression of numerous reactive oxygen species (ROS) detoxifying and antioxidant genes in hepatocytes. This study was designed to investigate whether curcumin-induced Nrf2 nuclear translocation could reduce ROS-mediated insulin resistance in cultured LO2 hepatocytes. METHODOLOGY: Human LO2 hepatocytes were incubated with curcumin and glucose oxidase (GO) in the presence/absence of wortmannin (a phosphatidyinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) inhibitor). Oxidative stress, cellular damage, Nrf2 nuclear translocation and insulin resistance were measured. RESULTS: GO exposure significantly increased intracellular ROS, glutathione (GSH) depletion, malondialdehyde (MDA) formation, and increased activities of cellular lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and aspartate amino transferase (AST), as well as causing insulin resistance. Curcumin pretreatment significantly attenuated these disturbances in intracellular ROS, liver enzyme activity and significantly antagonized the lipid peroxidation, GSH depletion and insulin resistance induced by GO in LO2 hepatocytes. These effects paralleled Nrf2 nuclear translocation induced by curcumin. Wortmannin partially blocked curcumin-induced Nrf2 nuclear translocation. In addition, wortmannin prevented curcumin-induced improvements in intracellular ROS, MDA formation, GSH depletion, liver enzyme activity and insulin resistance in cultured LO2 hepatocytes. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that curcumin could reduce ROS-mediated insulin resistance in hepatocytes, at least in part through nuclear translocation of Nrf2.

Long Term Effect of Curcumin in Restoration of Tumour Suppressor p53 and Phase-II Antioxidant Enzymes via Activation of Nrf2 Signalling and Modulation of Inflammation in Prevention of Cancer

From: http://www.greenmedinfo.com/article/curcumin-potentiated-significant-increase-nrf2-activation-it-restored-activityPLoS One.

Abstract

Inhibition of carcinogenesis may be a consequence of attenuation of oxidative stress via activation of antioxidant defence system, restoration and stabilization of tumour suppressor proteins along with modulation of inflammatory mediators. Previously we have delineated a significant role of curcumin during its long-term effect in regulation of glycolytic pathway and angiogenesis, which in turn results in prevention of cancer via modulation of stress activated genes. The present study was designed to investigate long-term effects of curcumin in regulation of Nrf2 mediated phase-II antioxidant enzymes, tumour suppressor p53 and inflammation under oxidative tumour microenvironment in liver of T-cell lymphoma bearing mice. Inhibition of Nrf2 signalling observed during lymphoma progression, resulted in down regulation of phase II antioxidant enzymes, p53 as well as activation of inflammatory signals. Curcumin potentiated a significant increase in Nrf2 activation. It restored activity of phase-II antioxidant enzymes like GST, GR, NQO1, and tumour suppressor p53 level. In addition, curcumin modulated inflammation via upregulation of TGF-β and reciprocal regulation of iNOS and COX2. The study suggests that during long term effect, curcumin leads to prevention of cancer by inducing phase-II antioxidant enzymes via activation of Nrf2 signalling, restoration of tumour suppressor p53 and modulation of inflammatory mediators like iNOS and COX2 in liver of lymphoma bearing mice.

Curcumin Activates the Heme Oxygenase-1 Gene via Regulation of Nrf2 and the Antioxidant Responsive Element

From: http://www.academia.edu/309816/Curcumin_Activates_the_Haem_Oxygenase-1_Gene_via_Regulation_of_Nrf2_and_the_Antioxidant-Responsive_Element

Synopsis

The transcription factor Nrf2, which normally exists in an inactive state as a consequenceof binding to a cytoskeleton-associated protein Keap1, can be activated by redox-dependent stimuli. Alteration of the Nrf2/Keap1 interaction enables Nrf2 to translocate to the nucleus, bind to the antioxidant responsive element (ARE) and initiates the transcription of genes encoding for detoxifying enzymes and cytoprotective proteins. This response is also triggered by a class of electrophilic compounds including polyphenols and plant-derived constituents. Recently, the natural antioxidants curcumin and caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) have been identified as potent inducers of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), a redox-sensitive inducible protein that provides protection against various forms of stress. Here, we show that in renal epithelial cells both curcumin and CAPE stimulate the expression of Nrf2 in a concentration- and time-dependent manner. This effect was associated with a significant increase in HO-1 protein expression and hemeoxygenase activity. From several lines of investigation we also report that curcumin (and, by inference, CAPE) stimulates HO-1 gene activity by promoting inactivation of the Nrf2/Keap1 complex leading to increased Nrf2 binding to the resident HO-1 AREs. Moreover, using antibodies and specific inhibitors of the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathways, we provide data implicating p38 MAPK in curcumin-mediated HO-1 induction. Taken together, these results demonstrate that induction of HO-1 by curcumin and CAPE requires the activation of the Nrf2/ARE pathway.

Influence of piperine on the pharmacokinetics of curcumin in animals and human volunteers.

Abstract

The medicinal properties of curcumin obtained from Curcuma longa L. cannot be utilised because of poor bioavailability due to its rapid metabolism in the liver and intestinal wall. In this study, the effect of combining piperine, a known inhibitor of hepatic and intestinal glucuronidation, was evaluated on the bioavailability of curcumin in rats and healthy human volunteers. When curcumin was given alone, in the dose 2 g/kg to rats, moderate serum concentrations were achieved over a period of 4 h. Concomitant administration of piperine 20 mg/kg increased the serum concentration of curcumin for a short period of 1-2 h post drug. Time to maximum was significantly increased (P < 0.02) while elimination half life and clearance significantly decreased (P < 0.02), and the bioavailability was increased by 154%. On the other hand in humans after a dose of 2 g curcumin alone, serum levels were either undetectable or very low. Concomitant administration of piperine 20 mg produced much higher concentrations from 0.25 to 1 h post drug (P < 0.01 at 0.25 and 0.5 h; P < 0.001 at 1 h), the increase in bioavailability was 2000%. The study shows that in the dosages used, piperine enhances the serum concentration, extent of absorption and bioavailability of curcumin in both rats and humans with no adverse effects.

MAXIMIZING HYDROGEN SUPPLEMENTS—MEGAHYDRATE AND ACTIVE H2 ULTRA—WITH pH ADJUST ALKALINIZING FORMULA

Fred Liers PhD pH adjust hydrogen supplementsToday, I talk about hydrogen supplements with a twist. Specifically, I discovered that a unique combination of three products—MegahydrateActive H2 Ultra, and pH ADJUST Alkalinizing Formula—provides surprising benefits. I put this combination, or concoction, into water to produce a hydrogen-infused drink with potent antioxidant quenching capacity that also rapidly alkalinizes the body (increasing pH levels and buffering acids), and provides the important minerals potassium and magnesium.

Combining hydrogen supplements with pH ADJUST creates a hydrogen-infused drink giving you benefits from 1) Two types of hydrogen, hydride (H-) and molecular hydrogen (H2) with antioxidant and energizing properties, 2) Increased pH levels (greater alkalinity) to balance pH levels, 3) Bicarbonates helping buffer acids and replenish bicarbonate reserves in the body, and 4) Essential minerals (potassium, magnesium) in bio-available forms.

In practical terms, this drink is energizing, anti-aging (party due to free-radical quenching effects), hydrating, and powerfully alkaline-forming! What this means for you might be a revolutionary drink that by giving your body all the antioxidant benefits of hydrogen plus increasing your pH levels turns can significantly improve multiple aspects of health.

By buffering acidity and making you alkaline, this drink can improve things like the strength of bones and teeth (via buffering and remineralization), supports kidney health (as kidneys are responsible for your bicarbonate reserves), boosts oxygenation (and thereby supports easier breathing) because alkaline cells hold more oxygen, and stops or reduces acid indigestion, acid reflux, and other acid-related problems. That could be just the beginning of the benefits you might receive because increasing your pH levels and normalizing alkaline conditions (i.e., pH 7.35–7.45) positively impacts many systems in the body.

WHY COMBINE pH ADJUST AND HYDROGEN SUPPLEMENTS?

pH Adjust, Megahydrate, and Active H2 Ultra are good supplements when used by themselves. That is, they work well as stand alone supplements. But I have found the combination of all three offers maximum antioxidant, alkalization, buffering, and mineralization benefits.

pH Adjust maximizes the effects of hydrogen supplements by boosting alkalinity and buffering capacity through the inclusion of effective, natural forms of important minerals and bicarbonates, including: potassium bicarbonate, magnesium carbonate, potassium glycinate, and sodium bicarbonate.

SYNERGY: HOW EACH PRODUCT CONTRIBUTES TO THE DRINK

There are potent synergistic effects to the combination of all three products. In particular, using both hydrogen negative ions (H-) or hydride and molecular hydrogen (H2) creates cascade effects in which hydrogen ions “recycle” themselves as antioxidants. The addition of pH Adjust brings its own set of benefits.

MEGAHYDRATE provides hydride or hydrogen negative ions (H-), also known as anions, that act significantly as antioxidants. These hydrogen ions can last up to three weeks in water. In the body, after the H- has donated its electron, it becomes simply “H” and proceeds to pair with another hydrogen atom to form H2 (molecular hydrogen), thereby continuing to exert free-radical quenching action. This is a major benefit of consuming H- in the quantities provided by Megahydrate.

ACTIVE H2 ULTRA provides molecular hydrogen (H2) directly into the body in significant amounts. Molecular hydrogen offers many benefits to the body, especially antioxidant benefits. Being an extremely small molecule, molecular hydrogen can enter into the smallest cellular compartments, including the nucleus of the cell, a place where most antioxidants are too large to enter) where it can exert its antioxidant capabilities. Molecular hydrogen actually provides a wide range of health benefits. (See the Molecular Hydrogen Institute (MHI) website for more information.)

pH ADJUST Alkalinizing Formula provides effective alkalinizing and buffering functions, as well as minerals (like potassium and magnesium) and bicarbonates needed for health. It is a fluffy, white powder that mixes easily in water, teas, coffee, and other liquids. It is formulated to rapidly increase pH levels, and acts as a buffering agent to balance pH in the body.

pH Adjust was created by my father, Dr. Hank Liers, HPDI’s founder and formulator of all “Dr. Liers Original” supplements. Dr. Hank been designing effective nutritional supplements since before 1988, the year he founded HPDI.

ACID-BASE BALANCE CRITICAL FOR HEALTH

Acid-base balance is critical in the body, where a pH level of 7.35–7.45 must be maintained. Modern diets and lifestyles tend to be acidifying for the body. Diets high in animal foods that are not adequately balanced with vegetable foods lead to acidity. Other factors include overconsumption of grains, alcohol, and other acid-forming foods. Stress can also play a role due too the acidifying effects of stress hormones like cortisol.

Moreover, the aging process itself depletes bicarbonate reserves. As noted, pH Adjust contains bicarbonates that help replenish bicarbonate reserves necessary for buffering acids. Finally, a significant portion of the population has low intake of potassium and magnesium, which pH Adjust includes as part of its design.

pH Adjust also includes sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), which is a well known acidity buffer and alkalinizer. For users, advantages of pH Adjust over pure sodium bicarbonate include reduced sodium intake, improved taste, and the provision of potassium and magnesium.

POTASSIUM & MAGNESIUM FOR HEALTH

Potassium is critical in the body not only for alkalinity, but also for its role in the sodium-potassium pump which is important in the production of cellular energy (ATP) and for preventing too high levels of sodium from entering cells.

Magnesium is essential in the body and plays a role in wide range of functions, including cellular energy production, immune function, muscle and connective tissue health, and more than 400 enzyme reactions.

pH ADJUST is a highly effective buffering formula, which tends to bring pH levels (low or high) back into the optimal range (7.35-7.45). This buffering capacity means users can both avoid acidosis (high acidity) and alkalosis (high alkalinity).

MAKE THE DRINK

OPTIMIZE MEGAHYDRATE & ACTIVE H2 ULTRA BY ADDING pH ADJUST

Start with 8–16 ounces of fresh, purified water. Add 1–2 scoops of pH ADJUST, 1–2 capsules (or 1-2 scoops) of MEGAHYDRATE, and 1–2 ACTIVE H2 ULTRA tablets. Add the Active H2 Ultra tablets last, and let them effervesce completely (about 1 minute) before drinking.

This alkaline-forming, hydrogen-infused water is best taken on an empty stomach. It is ideal to drink in the morning or the afternoon (away from food). Allow at least 15–30 minutes before eating, or see what works for you. I sometimes eat light foods 10 minutes after taking this drink.

I recommend testing your pH levels (salivary and/or urinary) using pH test paper (litmus paper). pH test paper gives you a way to accurately track your pH levels. You can also use it to measure the pH of foods you consume, such as hydrogen-infused water and drinks containing pH Adjust.

Note: Many HPDI customers use pH Adjust in other drinks, including tea, coffee, and ketogenic coffee. Coffee can be acidic and acid-forming beverage, so adding pH Adjust helps buffer the acidity. Many users say pH Adjust tastes mild or good in coffee, and some say it adds a certain creaminess to it.

USE THIS ALKALINIZING HYDROGEN DRINK!

The only way you will know how beneficial hydrogen-infused water with pH Adjust can be—or how well it works for you—is to make it and use it! You will likely find yourself surprised by how energizing, alkalinizing, and mineralizing it truly is for you. And how good you feel when you drink it!

Consider testing the pH of your water first using pH test paper. Many people drink highly acidic water (pH 6 or less) without realizing it. Just because your water is filtered or purified does not necessarily mean it is alkaline. pH Adjust can “fix” this problem. Other people report that their water is highly alkaline (8.0+). Either way, pH Adjust can buffer the water to put it into the range slightly alkaline range of about 7.35–7.45. If you have extremely acidic water, you might need to use two servings of pH Adjust in 8–16 ounces of water. Play with it.

Let us know how this works out for you. We welcome your feedback and success stories!

MANY OTHER WAYS TO USE pH ADJUST

Hydrogen supplements and pH Adjust are made for each other, and create wonderfully alkalinizing hydrogen-infused water. But there are other ways to use pH Adjust. ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELDS (EMF) AND NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS

Fred Liers PhD EMF electromagnetic fields nutritional supplementsWe live in a digital world enjoying convenient and limitless access to people, information, and the Internet of Things. What could be the downside? EMF for one.

What is EMF? EMF stands for “Electromagnetic Fields.” Electromagnetic fields encompass an entire spectrum of waves from extremely low frequencies (ELF) and visible light to ultra-high frequencies, such as cosmic rays (ionizing radiation).

What I refer to as “EMF” is the non-ionizing radiation to which we are exposed from cell phones and cell-phone towers, Wi-Fi, cellular data, Bluetooth, smart meters, computers, solar panel inverters, AC-to-DC transformers, power lines, and signals from other digital devices.

Is EMF harmful? Yes, there is a large body of scientific evidence showing EMF can be extremely harmful. Plenty of evidence has existed for decades. Do a search on PubMed. The harms of EMF are not publicized to consumers, especially by companies profiting from the digital and wireless revolutions.

The problem: every year there are more cell phone towers, Wi-Fi networks, “Smart” meters, and solar panel inverters. Soon California will mandate all new homes must have solar power, which means more EMF. Beyond this, there are millions of 5G antennas coming to your region, as part of the most powerful wireless network ever built.

Most health care professionals don’t know much about EMF and the importance of reducing exposure. However, there are a growing number of physicians who understand the dangers of EMF. They can make suggestions for lowering EMF exposure and may also refer you to EMF mitigation experts.

There are four types of EMF building biologists generally test for in homes: 1) Radiofrequency fields (RF), 2) magnetic fields, 3) electric fields, and 4) electromagnetic interference (EMI) or “dirty electricity.” All four types can cause health issues, so it is important to measure and isolate them so you can take action to reduce each type of field, respectively.

I tested my house and office for all four types of EMF—and found all four of them at high levels. I have since mitigated them to safer levels. I continue to find ways to reduce EMF and my exposures to them.

Ways that various types of EMF cause damage to biological systems:

• DNA Damage – Radiofrequency (RF) radiation induces both single- and double-stranded DNA breaks in human and animal cells. When DNA breaks are not properly repaired, the long-term damage results in adverse health effects.

• Voltage Gated Calcium Channels (VGCC) – EMF opens VGCCs causing cells to be flooded with calcium. This excess calcium disrupts multiple pathways, leading to various negative effects, including increased oxidative stress, disrupted nerve cell communication, and heart-related problems.

• Blood Brain Barrier – EMF can open the blood-brain barrier causing toxins or other harmful substances to enter the brain, and for the brain to leak” substances it requires, such as nutrients or neurotransmitters.

• Melatonin Hormone Reduction – EMF suppresses the production of melatonin, which is the antioxidant hormone responsible for repairing the body during sleep. When the body does not properly repair itself at night, problems can arise from immune-related conditions to premature aging.

• Microbiome Disruption – Just as all cells—including those in our body, are electrical, the organisms in our microbiome are electrical, too. There is evidence to show that our microbiome is harmed by EMF.

These are some of the ways that EMF can harm health. When you add them together, you begin to get a picture showing that EMF can cause significant harm to biological systems. Many scientists have suggested how EMF can contribute to almost any health condition from autism to Alzheimer’s disease.

Certain people, myself included, can immediately feel the effects of EMF exposure. Immediate or short-term effects can vary from fatigue, low-energy, and mental fogginess to head and body pains, and ringing in the ears (tinnitus). Terms used to describe the state of being sensitive to EMF are “Electromagnetic Sensitivity” and “Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity” (EHS).

Persons who suffer from EHS may range from 2% to 7% of the population or higher. Yet, whether or not you are “EHS” or feel effects from EMF exposure, science shows your body remains subject to adverse effects, including oxidative damage. That is, just because you do not feel it, does not mean it is not harmful.

Note: there is evidence that certain frequencies of EMF can support health. These often fall into the category of PEMF or “pulsed electromagnetic fields.” Another example: the Schumann resonances (7.82 Hz – 33.8 Hz), which are natural electromagnetic resonances created by lightning discharges from the ionosphere and the surface of the earth. The Schumann resonances are natural earth frequencies to which humans and all life has been exposed for millions of years.

MY EMF STORY

In my case, I never really noticed any problems until I had a solar panel power system installed on my roof-—on two different homes, one in 2014 and the other in 2017. In both cases, I was exposed for relatively long periods at short distances to smart meters and solar inverters, as well as solar-related Wi-Fi equipment.

Shortly after the first installation, I noticed fatigue, inability to concentrate, and pressure in my head. I did not initially make the connection between how I was feeling and the solar installation, which included a DC to AC inverter and two smart meters. I tried to keep my analog electric meter, but the solar company told me only digital smart meters are compatible with the solar power system.

My symptoms improved when I moved my desk away from the wall on whose opposite side the solar equipment was located. Shortly thereafter, we moved to a different home in our metropolitan area. A few years later, we had solar panels installed on our new house. I hoped to avoid symptoms similar to what I had experience previously. No such luck.

After the second solar installation in 2017, I again experienced fatigue, inability to concentrate, as well as pain in my head. I moved my desk and unplugged the solar company’s dedicated Wi-Fi unit that measures solar power generation. I felt better. But over a period of months I developed increasing low-tone tinnitus (ringing in the ears). At first it sounded like a small plane or a truck engine in the distance. The noise grew louder. Then it rumbled night and day. I realized it wasn’t an engine when I discovered the noise was significantly louder in my right ear. Alarmed, I began the process of eliminating possible causes. I finally eliminated all causes—except for EMF.

I read every book I could find about EMF. I read dozens of books, watched videos on the topic, and spoke to EMF experts. During this period my son chose to research EMF for science fair project. His initial idea was to build something for me (like a tinfoil helmet) to reduce my exposure. That idea evolved into measuring the EMF levels emitted by all electronics in our house.

My son’s science project would go on to regionals in our state. Yet for me, the most important thing was how it contributed to our understanding of EMF. It was a launch pad driving us deeper into research, and led to the implementation of many EMF mitigation strategies. Our entire family benefited from it.

EMF electromagnetic fields project

It took months, but what we learned helped us take actions to mitigate EMF exposure. My tinnitus began fading and then diminished significantly so that it is not a daily issue for me. This was empowering for me because I took positive actions that made a difference in my health. The process continues because EMF is not going away. I remain vigilant. Yet, I hope my experience can help you reduce your EMF exposure, or avoid developing EMF sensitivity.

I still use cell phones and other digital devices. But I use them less and in much smarter ways. Ways that reduce my EMF exposure. Due to my research and experience with EMF, my awareness of its dangers is such that my thinking on the topic is forever changed. I can never take EMF safety for granted. That is a good thing.

EMF FROM SMART METERS, CELL PHONES, SOLAR INVERTERS, ETC.

Smart meters and DC-to-AC solar inverters can produce high levels of electromagnetic interference (EMI), which is one form of EMF. For more information on EMI, read Samuel Milham’s Dirty Electricity (see resources section below). After reading that book, I considered the possibility that EMI could be contributing to my problems with EMF.

I learned that any device (like an inverter) that converts DC power (say from solar panels) into AC power (home outlets) can add unwanted forms of electricity into the AC power. Clean (60 Hz) electricity becomes polluted by electromagnetic interference. The higher the levels of this EMI or “dirty” electricity, the greater the amount of health effects.

I obtained a broadband EMI meter from Greenwave to measure dirty electricity in my home. I measured EMI levels with the solar system running at midday. Recommended EMI levels are 25–50 millivolts. Yet, every outlet in the house measured almost 2,000 millivolts (1,986  millivolts to be precise!).

I shut off the solar inverter (disabling it and two smart meters) to measure baseline dirty electricity. EMI levels dropped to less than 200 millivolts! This meant one thing: components of our solar system causing high levels (1700+ millivolts) of dirty electricity.

Greenwave EMI EMF meter

Greenwave meter measures dirty electricity in home electrical systems.

My first solution was to purchase multiple plug-in Greenwave EMI filters. I installed them in about 25 outlets throughout my home. They reduced EMI significantly, but they did not reduce it much in the outlets nearest to area that houses the breaker box, solar inverter, and smart meters. A few outlets away from that area exhibited stubbornly high EMI (1,500+ millivolts).

After further research, I called Satic USA. Satic is a solar company that understands that EMI can affect people. They have products designed to condition an electrical system to remove dirty electricity. I  purchased a line conditioner (Super Duty Power Perfect Box) from Satic specifically created to clean EMI from photovoltaic (PV) solar systems.

Note: Satic describes its line conditioners primarily as energy saving devices and protectors of electrical equipment. Clean power is more efficient. Yet, clean, conditioned AC power means reduced EMI. Thus, there is a human health component built-in, if you will.

The Power Perfect Box was installed by an electrician near our breaker box. This line conditioner (containing two harmonic rectifiers) removed many unwanted harmonics and transients induced into our homes’ electrical system by the solar inverter and smart meters.

Above all, I felt better. I could focus better. I slept better. So did everyone else in the house. And my tinnitus began to diminish.

Satic USA EMF EMI dirty electricity

Satic USA’s “Power Perfect Box” is a line conditioner that directly connects to the breaker box where it “cleans” your AC power using two harmonic rectifiers.

I highly recommend obtaining a Power Perfect Box if you have a smart meter, solar power inverter, or dirty electricity (EMI) coming from your utility. Measure baseline dirty electricity in AC outlets using a broadband EMI meter (like Greenwave) after turning off your solar inverter and and smart meters.

Satic makes several types of Power Perfect Box. Which one you need depends on how many harmonic rectifiers your electrical system requires. They also make smaller, lower-cost in-line and plug-in EMF Eliminator devices, which act as high-capacity EMI filters. These provide less protection than a Power Perfect Box, but more than a Greenwave filter. Satic will recommend products based on your unique needs. If you contact Satic to order, speak to Alden, mention my name, and he may offer you a discount.

At Satic’s recommendation, I kept the plug-in Greenwave filters in power outlets throughout my home. Between the line conditioner and the Greenwave filters, EMI now ranges from 15 millivolts to 300 millivolts in most outlets during the day. It is lowest (10–50 millivolts) at night when the solar system is not running.

Note: Many homes only require Greenwave plug-in filters because EMI (dirty electricity) levels are already low to moderate (100-300 millivolts), as measured by a Greenwave meter. However, a residence or office with a typical solar panel installation peaks at about 2,000 millivolts. Thus, a solar-powered home, office, or school may require a dedicated line conditioner to reduce EMI below reductions obtained by plug-in filters.

Multiple Greenwave filters plugged into AC outlets can further reduce EMI. The combination of a line conditioner (like Satic USA’s Power Perfect Box) and plug-in Greenwave filters works well to bring EMI down to safer levels.

NOT DONE WITH EMF YET

Another EMF issue arose. It seems my exposure to EMF from the home solar system prior to mitigation had led to a general sensitivity to EMF from other sources. That is, even though I had reduced my exposure to fields relating to the solar panel system and its parts (smart meters, solar inverter, solar-related Wi-Fi equipment), I had nevertheless become more sensitive to EMF from cell phones, cellular phone data, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, vehicle electronics, and other sources.

This sensitivity meant that mitigating dirty electricity (EMI) and reducing the tinnitus, while helpful, would not be sufficient to stop my suffering related to other EMF sources. It would take effort to identify the sources, and then remove or mitigate them.

EMF METERS

Meters are your best friend when it comes to measuring EMF. About the same time I found the Greenwave EMI meter—EMI is just one type of EMF—I obtained three or four meters designed to measure other types of electromagnetic fields.

Some of my favorite meters are the Acoustimeter AM-10 (from EMFields), the Trifield 100XE (from Alpha Labs), and the ME3030B (from Gigahertz Solutions). Each meter can provide different insights into how much EMF exposure you receive from various sources

EMF Acoustimeter AM-10

EMFields AM-10 Acoustimeter is versatile and easy to use.

I began the process of measuring every type of device from iPads to cell phone chargers. I carried meters with me everywhere I went. During his science fair project, I helped my son measure and document readings from EMF sources at multiple distances. This data would be invaluable for my own mitigation efforts.

Overall, EMF levels were far greater than I expected, and from a wider variety of sources not just mobile phones or Wi-Fi routers. For example, wireless toys and cordless phones can be among the worst offenders in the RF frequencies. Even indoor hydroponic systems can generate high levels of dirty electricity.

Trifield 100XE meter EMF

The TriField Meter 100XE is cost-effective.

Using my meters to obtain accurate measurements, I began reducing my exposure to all sources of EMF. The more I reduced EMF exposures, the better I felt. I noticed—and continue to notice—improvements in focus, mental energy, and overall well being.

EMF MITIGATION SOLUTIONS

If my EMF problems are a challenge to solve, then at least there are some upsides. My research has led me to solutions that allow me to heal and avoid symptoms. I am empowered to act upon my knowledge, and to share it.

In many ways, my experience has been a blessing. I am now aware of EMF dangers. While I would not wish anyone to have my experience, I hope that sharing my experience can help even a few people to avoid adverse health effects of EMF.

Here are some actions you can take that have helped me. I recommend you take these actions whether or not you feel symptoms or believe you are not affected by EMF.

• Create a wired Internet network in the home. Computers, laptops, and HDTVs can run on hardwired Ethernet connections. Smart phones and tablets can be hardwired using Ethernet adaptor cords. Use Wi-fi routers infrequently (minimize use), or not at all. Keep routers as far away from living areas as possible.

• Keep smart phones in airplane mode whenever possible. Minimize use of cell phones for calls. Use Air tube headsets and speaker phones whenever possible to provide distance from the device.

• Use an anti-radiation mobile phone case (like SafeSleeve). Avoid using mobile phones in a vehicles like cars and buses (as vehicles act as Faraday cages in which signals just bounce around). Keep away from phone or tablet when downloading data. Turn off Wi-Fi and cellular data on the phone most of the time.

• Never keep mobile phones in pockets or close to the body. Turn phone off or use airplane mode if phone must be kept in proximity to the body.

• Turn off electronics (phones, routers, Bluetooth devices) at night. Keep cell phones and other electronics out of your bedroom. Put your router on timer switch to shut off automatically at 9 or 10 pm.

• Use a landline phone. Yes, landline phone service still exists in most places.

• Obtain a good general EMF meter or two, such as a Trifield, Acoustimer, Cornet, or ME3030B (Gigahertz Solutions). Test your house and your devices.

• Test for electromagnetic interference (EMI) in household outlets using a EMI meter. Install a line conditioner and/or EMI filters (to reduce “dirty electricity”). You can obtain EMI meters and filters from Greenwave or Stetzer.

• Shield smart meters using “radiant barrier” anti-radiation materials, like Satic Shield (from Satic USA) or Reflectix (available at Home Depot). Place shielding on the interior wall opposite the meter. There are also metal meter cages for blocking fields coming from the face and sides of smart meter.

• Consider an in-line conditioner for your electrical system, especially if you have a smart meter or solar panels—or measure significant amounts (300+ millivolts) of dirty electricity on your wiring. I am pleased with Satic USA’s line conditioner (Power Perfect Box) that attaches to my electrical breaker box. If you contact Satic to order a line conditioner, ask to speak to Alden. Mention my name, and he may give you a discount.

• Keep a Faraday bag available for times when you want to block all signals to or from your smart phone or other devices. They are available for less than $20.

The more simple actions I take to reduce EMF, the better I feel. The list of actions I take to reduce EMF exposure grows weekly, it seems. Most of my symptoms have gone away. However, I have no desire to risk them coming back. Whenever possible, I avoid other people using cell phones, reduce time spent in places with Wi-Fi routers, smart meters, cell phone towers, etc.

I have become more sensitive than some of my meters (at least sometimes), so I feel that I am nearly a kind of meter myself in terms detecting the presence and magnitude of electromagnetic fields. Even so, I am often surprised by high EMF readings using my meters. Takeaway: Relying solely on yourself (no matter how sensitive you think you are), is not the best idea.

The most important thing you can do is to obtain a good EMF meter. Measure around your house, your devices, and appliances. Unless you actually have a meter, you will not likely optimize EMF reduction—because you can’t see EMFs. If cost is an issue, certain online stores let you rent EMF meters. Get started today!

BEST SUPPLEMENTS FOR EMF

The first lines of defense against EMF should be increasing distance from EMF sources, and reducing duration of exposure. These make a huge difference for protecting health.

One cannot control all sources of exposure. Neighbors have routers, smart meters, antennas, and other sources of EMF generating electronic pollution (“electrosmog”). Wi-Fi is nearly everywhere these days.

A huge component in EMF defense is nutritional supplements. Why? Because levels of EMF to which we are commonly exposed result in oxidative stress requiring high levels of antioxidants to quench free radicals. Fortunately, HPDI produces some of the best nutritional supplements available for dealing with EMF.

I already had a good diet and took plenty of high-quality nutritional supplements when my problems with EMF started. What I began doing differently was 1) taking generally higher doses of antioxidants and 2) targeting my antioxidant defense systems with specific antioxidant supplements.

By focusing on meeting my higher needs for antioxidants, and by adding specific supplements known for their antioxidant capabilities, I believe I mitigate the worst adverse effects of EMF. Antioxidant supplements noticeably support my ability to function as normally as possible given both my past experiences with EMF, and the ongoing daily needs for antioxidant defense.

I will describe the supplements I believe are most important to take for EMF exposure. I take all these supplements. I include every one of these supplements because each offers a unique benefit. Together they are the most essential formulas to help both with routine, daily exposures to EMF (like Wi-Fi and cell phones), as well as other types of exposures, such as proximity to potent EMF sources from smart meters to cell phone towers.

ANTIOXIDANT & VITAMIN C FORMULAS

The primary type of damage caused by EMF is oxidative stress, the most important type of nutritional supplements to help with free-radical damage are antioxidant formulas, including vitamin C and Nrf2 activator supplements. HPDI offers a complete range of antioxidant and Nrf2 activator products.

PRO-C™ ANTIOXIDANT FORMULA

PRO-C™ is an advanced free-radical protection formula. It performs double-duty as both a potent vitamin C formula and an superb antioxidant formula. It therefore provides important benefits when used in applications requiring Vitamin C and/or free-radical defense, e.g., protocols for general health, anti-aging, rejuvenation, etc.

PRO-C™ contains 500 mg (833% RDA) of buffered non-GMO Vitamin C (in the form of powdered calcium, magnesium, and zinc ascorbates), as well as high-potency Grape Extract (from grape seeds, skins, and pulp), green tea extract, reduced glutathione, n-acetyl-l-cysteine (NAC), r-lipoic acid, coenzyme forms of Vitamin B2 and Vitamin B6, and selenium. OTHER FOUNDATIONAL FORMULAS

I emphasize the importance of antioxidant formulas because they are most effective at quenching the free-radicals caused by exposure to electromagnetic fields. In reality, HPDI’s antioxidant and vitamin C formulas are part of a complete system of HPDI supplements. This three-tiered system includes foundational supplements, enhancement formulas, and condition-specific formulas.

While antioxidant supplements are most important EMF defense, the truth is that antioxidant supplements work far better when they are properly combined with other foundational supplements in the HPDI system. That is, a high-potency multivitamin, essential fatty acids, and a Rejuvenate!™ superfood.

The case for multivitamins is abundantly clear. If you look at the list of harmful effects of EMF (above), you will see that in addition to free-radical damage, EMF harms many essential biological functions in cells. Many of these functions cause cells to require additional vitamins and minerals. These nutrients can be provided by a high-potency multivitamin that provides both optimal amounts (versus minimal amounts) of nutrients, but also proper forms (like coenzyme vitamins) that are most readily assimilated and used by the body. Such forms are immediately used and do not require conversion to usable forms.

MULTIVITAMINS:
HIGH-POTENCY, HIGH-PURITY

HPDI Multivitamins include five different formulas, including a children’s chewable that scales up easily for adults. Two of the primary multivitamins are Multi Two Caps and Mighty Multi-Vite (caps).

Multi Two Caps – A comprehensive multivitamin providing optimal levels of key vitamins, minerals, and cofactors. Includes higher levels of B vitamins.

Mighty-Multi-Vite! – Similar to Multi Two Caps, but offers higher levels of key phytonutrients turmeric, grape extract, and broccoli sprouts powder.

HPDI’s high-potency multivitamins provide:

• B-Complex vitamins: B-Complex vitamins supports enzyme systems. Enzymes are required for all metabolic functions in the body. B vitamins are cofactors required for every enzymatic reaction.

• Minerals. HPDI multivitamins provide 10 or more key minerals. Like B vitamins, minerals support enzyme systems. At the center is every enzyme is an important mineral necessary for its function.

• NAC (N-Acetyl-Cysteine): NAC increases glutathione levels, which are important antioxidant defense in the body.

• Fat-soluble vitamins A, C, D, E, and K. Fat soluble vitamins perform many essential functions, including protection of cell membranes.

  • HIGH PURITY. Among the Purest Available Multivitamin supplements. Carefully Designed To Exclude Common Allergens, and Exclude or Minimize Excipients, Additives, and Fillers.

If I could only take a single supplement daily, it would be a multivitamin. I personally prefer HPDI’s Mighty Multi-Vite!. But Multi Two actually provides higher levels of important B vitamins.

Multivitamins are too vital not to take daily. Fortunately, you are not limited to taking a single supplement. That is why I put antioxidant and vitamin C formulas at the top of the list for protection against EMF. The truth is, however, that both a multivitamin and antioxidants are essential for foundational nutrition. You need both to ensure optimal protection from EMF. There are a few more critical nutrients you need, as well.

ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS (EFA)

Another important foundational supplement is essential fatty acids (EFA). Essential fats are critical for cellular function, cell membrane health, combating inflammatory processes, and overall health. Essential fats are necessary for cellular health. Yet, because EMF creates problems at the cellular level, it is even more vital to obtain essential fats to help cells function at their best.

People overlook the importance of essential fats. That is, I notice that multivitamins and antioxidants are far more likely to be prioritized, and therefore taken daily. Fair enough, because I prioritize those supplements too. Yet, we neglect essential fats at our peril. That is why I take EFAs daily, too.

IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS OF ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS (EFA)

• Regulate steroid production and hormone synthesis
• Regulate pressure in the eyes, joints, and blood vessels
• Regulate response to pain, inflammation, and swelling
• Mediate Immune Response
• Regulate bodily secretions and their viscosity
• Dilate or constrict blood vessels
• Regulate smooth muscle and autonomic reflexes
• Are primary constituents of cellular membranes
• Regulate the rate at which cells divide
• Necessary for the transport of oxygen from the red blood cells to tissues
• Necessary for proper kidney function and fluid balance
• Prevent red blood cells from clumping together
• Regulate nerve transmission

When by diet or supplementation, you consume the correct ratios and amounts of essential fatty acids, then you allow the EFAs to act in ways critical for these functions. For more detailed information, see Dr. Hank’s article, “The Truth About Essential Fatty Acids” (December 2017).

HPDI’s essential fatty acids formula is Essential Fats Plus E. Essential Fats Plus E provides essential fasts in the proper amounts and ratios for good health.

Essential Fats Plus E EMF

Essential Fats Plus E contains eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) (important essential omega-3 fatty acids), gamma linolenic acid (GLA) (an important essential omega-6 fatty acid), and mixed tocotrienols and tocopherols (Vitamin E).

The EPA and DHA are in the form of triglycerides derived from marine lipids (using patented flash molecular distillation) and the GLA is from cold-pressed borage seed oil. The mixed tocotrienols and tocopherols derive from rice bran oil, and are included in the softgel capsules for antioxidant protection of the polyunsaturated oils.

Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are known to play important roles in the formation of prostaglandins. The prostaglandins are important cellular regulators controlling inflammatory processes and pain in the body.

Fish oils may be useful adjuncts in protocols for 1) Cardiovascular disease, 2) Hypertension, 3) Arthritis and inflammatory disorders, 4) Psoriasis and skin problems, 5) Diabetes mellitus, 6) Depression, and 7) Kidney disease. GLA may be a useful adjunct in protocols for 1) Multiple Sclerosis and 2) Arthritis. Research indicates that in a balanced formula there are synergistic effects between EPA, DHA, and GLA. For example, it is known that EPA inhibits the conversion of GLA into pro-inflammatory (and pain-causing) arachidonic acid.

Research indicates that in a balanced formula there are synergistic effects between EPA, DHA, and GLA. For example, it is known that EPA inhibits the conversion of GLA into pro-inflammatory (and pain-causing) arachidonic acid.

Because these fatty acids have many double bonds that are prone to oxidation, Vitamin E is included in the forms of mixed tocotrienols and tocopherols. In addition, these forms of Vitamin E have been shown to reduce arterial plaques and enhance blood flow, inhibit thromboxane and platelet aggregation, protect serum lipids from oxidation (including LDL and HDL), reduce carotid stenosis (narrowing) and prevent stroke, trap harmful nitrogenous radicals, act as anti-proliferative agents, and provide powerful oxidative defense for the skin.

Essential fatty acids are considered “essential” for all the reasons described. They are so critical for proper cellular function that not having sufficient essential  fats  (or the proper ratios) can impair important processes in the body. I believe EMF exposure puts additional stress on cells such that essential fats are even more necessary. So take an EFA supplement like Essential Fasts Plus E every day.

HYDROGEN SUPPLEMENTS

Hydrogen supplements can be very helpful for preventing or mitigating oxidative damage by EMF. I have recently written about two hydrogen formulas that support antioxidant defenses: Megahydrate and Active H2 Ultra. (See “Hydrogen Supplements – Active H2 Ultra and Megahydrate“)

MEGAHYDRATE

Megahydrate (powder and capsules) provides H-, or the hydrogen anion, which provides lasting antioxidant protection. It this regard, it is highly effective at quenching free radical (even better than molecular hydrogen), greatly enhances the production of ATP (cellular energy) in the body, retains its antioxidant capacity for extended periods, and is the key unlocking the potential of water as the medium for nutrient replenishment and waste removal at the cellular level.

The active ingredient in Megahydrate is silica hydride. One very important characteristic of the antioxidant capacity of silica hydride is that it is the only antioxidant that does not turn into a free radical (i.e., oxidant) once it has neutralized a free radical by donating its electron. Negatively-charged hydrogen turns into molecular hydrogen gas and/or turns into water.

Megahydrate antioxidant EMF

One daily dose of Megahydrate has more antioxidant power than hundreds of glasses of fresh vegetable and fruit juices, broccoli, brussel sprouts, leafy greens, and other foods rich in antioxidants and prevents free radical damage.

Studies show that Megahydrate increases energy production (adenosine triphosphate or ATP) by up to four times.

BENEFITS OF MEGAHYDRATE

  • Contains Hydrating Silica Microclusters®
  • Extremely Powerful Antioxidant
  • Recycles other Key Antioxidants in the Body

  • Reduces Lactic Acid Buildup During Intense Workouts
  • Protects Telomeres by allowing cells to exceed the Hayflick limit by 4–5 times

I drink Megahydrate daily in water. I find it very energizing and it seems to potentiate the other antioxidant supplements. Usually I drink it mixed with Active H2 Ultra, which provides molecular hydrogen. But sometimes I drink Megahydrate all by itself, as it is an excellent standalone hydrogen formula.

ACTIVE H2 ULTRA

ACTIVE H2® ULTRA is my favorite molecular hydrogen formula. In fact, I almost always add this tablet into water that is already infused with Megahydrate. That is, I believe this formula works best when taken together with Megahydrate. I like this combination “fizzy” drink so much, I created a video showing how to make it.

Active H2 Ultra tablets provides abundant hydrogen molecules that are uniquely found in fresh, raw, living foods and are essential to any serious antioxidation program.

A unique and patent pending combination of magnesium and supporting nutrients are the only active substances in Active H2 Ultra. This distinguishes it from the existing synthetic chemical formulas as well as the use of electrolysis (as in water ionizers) to generate molecular hydrogen.

The natural, proven Active H2 Ultra formula consists of a proprietary blend of pure magnesium metal, malic acid, tartaric acid, stearic acid, and dextrose that act synergistically in water to generate Molecular Hydrogen and electron-rich potential (-ORP).

Hydrogen is emerging among the top super-nutrition discoveries of the 21st century. I am not waiting to gain its benefits. Just as many athletes are using it to gain a competitive advantage, I take Active H2 Ultra and Megahydrate for their effective antioxidant benefits and much more, including EMF protection. And so should you.

RESTORE

RESTORE is one of those products that go beyond anything else I’ve seen in terms of what is can do and how it does it. In fact, I recently published an article devoted solely to Restore (see “Restore Gut Health Formula + Video”).

The reason I include RESTORE in my list of top formulas for EMF exposure is because it protects the integrity of the gut barrier or tight junctions, supports the communications system in the gut microbiome, and acts as a fertilizer for the microbiome itself. These are important effects because EMF breaks down tight junctions, interferes with microbiome communications (as gut bacteria use their own weak EMF signals to communicate), and reduces microbiome health.

RESTORE is a soil-derived, scientifically backed mineral supplement that creates a firewall against toxins entering the gut wall. RESTORE helps create a biological environment for “good” gut bacteria to grow and flourish in order to support improvement of overall health.

RESTORE is not a probiotic. It is not a prebiotic. Rather, it is a carbon rich, alkaline liquid, with lignite derived trace organics and essential trace amino acids, that promotes an optimal environment in the gut. With 70% of the immune system located in the gut, this optimal gut environment leads to great gut health.

Research has shown RESTORE to be non-toxic and to support the tight junction cells of the gut lining. Additionally, RESTORE has been shown both in the laboratory and clinically to help support the functioning of the gut barrier and improve gut health. In experiments, toxins like herbicides and gluten have been shown to degrade the gut barrier. RESTORE has been shown to promote the strengthening of the tight junction gut barrier in small and large gut membrane cells for gut health.

One of the main elements in RESTORE is the lignite extract. Lignite comes from decomposed prehistoric matter. As plants decompose, they first form peat, which then turns into humate, then lignite, then leonardite and finally to coal. All of these are rich in carbon. One of the differences between all of these elements is the amount of time and pressure have been applied to them.

OTHER IMPORTANT SUPPLEMENTS MITIGATING EMF EFFECTS

My list of favorite supplements for EMF could be much longer. I will mention two other types of supplements I think can be useful for most people. One is magnesium and the other is C-60 (or Carbon-60).

MAGNESIUM

Magnesium is critical for supporting and enabling at least 400 enzymes in the body that are needed for the vital reactions in cells. EMF can damage or impair enzyme function. Therefore sufficient magnesium is essential for optimal cell function. One known problem is that most people are deficient in magnesium. When enzyme systems lack magnesium, they fail to properly function, resulting in many problems in the body, including lower energy production (ATP) and deficient metabolism.

Magnesium also balances calcium in cells. When EMF causes voltage gated calcium channels (VGCC) to open flooding cells with calcium, the presence of magnesium may help because one of the functions of magnesium is preventing cellular calcium imbalances. Not to mention the role of magnesium in energy production—as energy is required to pump excess calcium out of cells.

One of my favorite magnesium products is MYO-MAG. MYO-MAG is an advanced, synergistic magnesium formula that provides therapeutic levels of magnesium, plus nutrients that support the body’s utilization of magnesium.

MYO-MAG provides magnesium in the form of malate and diglycinate, as well as Vitamins B1, B2, and B6 (including coenzyme forms of these vitamins). The formula is buffered with a small amount of magnesium carbonate, and includes some manganese for mineral balance.

MYO-MAG therefore is a highly effective oral magnesium supplement with benefits that include less fatigue and greater energy, improved metabolic functions, cardiovascular support, nutrition for muscles, reduced spasms or cramps, help for migraine headaches, and many others.

The formula not only supports metabolism, but also cellular energy production (ATP) and optimal cellular function. It allows for rapid uptake and absorption of easily assimilated forms of magnesium. It also provides critical nutrients supporting energy production in the body.

Because MYO-MAG rapidly boosts magnesium levels, individuals usually notice greater physical and mental energy, reduced fatigue, and often a greater sense of overall well being.

Myo-Mag EMF

MYO-MAG provides magnesium important for cellular energy.

MYO-MAG contains ingredients participating in the production of ATP. One vegetarian capsule contains 100 mg of magnesium and 440 mg of l-malic acid. Vitamins B1 and B2 are included both in standard and phosphorylated forms. Also included are Vitamin B6 in its phosphorylated form only, manganese (because high levels of magnesium can deplete the body of it), magnesium carbonate (a malic acid buffer), and glycine as the carrier for a portion of the magnesium and for the manganese. MYO-MAG is contained in a vegetarian capsule to ensure rapid assimilation.

Supplementing the diet with magnesium and malic acid may reverse conditions of low energy. Suggested daily amounts include 300-600 mg of magnesium and 1200–2400 mg of malic acid. Taking 3 to 8 MYO-MAG capsules daily can provide these amounts. Beyond this formula, HPDI offers a complete range of magnesium formulas, including Ancient Minerals topical magnesium chloride products (oil, flakes, and gel).

CARBON-60

Carbon-60 or C-60 is an experimental supplement providing extremely high antioxidant capacities. Carbon-60 provides research grade Carbon-60 Fullerenes (0.8 mg/ml) in organic olive oil. While this formula is formulated for research, it is known to be among the most powerful antioxidants available. The structure of the Fullerene allows for a large number of electrons to be held and repeatedly donated for the purpose of quenching free radicals. It therefore offers unrivaled  antioxidant capacity in the body.

I will be talking a lot more about Carbon-60 in coming months. Suffice it to say that the research is showing that C-60 may be the future of antioxidant nutrition.

CONCLUSION

Few people have paid much attention to the dangers of EMF until recently. There is growing awareness that EMF contributes to health problems, as well as the mechanisms by which EMF damages the body. Given the rise in health conditions likely to be related to EMF exposure, it makes sense to take action now, rather than unnecessarily risking harmful effects of exposures.

There are many actions you take to protect yourself and your family. These include turning off Wi-Fi, putting cell phones on airplane mode, shielding smart meters (or keeping your analog meters), increasing distance from EMF sources, and reducing duration of exposure.

Taking nutritional supplements providing good levels of antioxidant nutrients and supporting metabolic functions makes a lot of sense, too. Supplements have helped me be healthier and recover faster from EMF exposures. They likely can help you and yours do the same.

EMF damages your cells daily. Take action to protect yourself!
