ORAC (standing for “Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity”) was developed by Brunswick Labs as an analytical tool for estimating the antioxidant capacity of substances. The fact is that there are a variety of “free radicals” that operate in humans — the most important of which are the primary radicals hydroxyl, peroxyl, peroxynitrite, singlet oxygen, and superoxide anion. Brunswick Labs has reported that even though the peroxyl is the major free radical in the body, it represents no more than 27% of the total antioxidant potential of selected fruits and vegetables. In addition, the original ORAC method favors certain antioxidant substances over others (e.g., anthocyanins over carotenoids) due to the use of a single free radical source (peroxyl radical).
These radicals are formed, behave, and are defended against differently. They all contribute to: 1) a general condition called “oxidative stress,” or cellular damage, and 2) broad human health concerns caused, for example, by inflammation, and DNA and protein damage. They are each implicated in different health problems – from cardiovascular disease to macular degeneration and Alzheimer’s disease and to skin damage and aging. Below we provide a brief summary of these free radicals.
The Peroxyl Radical is very important in many biological systems, including lipid peroxidation, DNA cleavage, and protein backbone modification. Hydroxyl is highly reactive and cannot be eliminated by our endogenous enzymes (such as SOD and glutathione). It can damage virtually all types of macromolecules: carbohydrates, nucleic acids, lipids, and amino acids. In the skin, hydroxyl radicals are created by UV exposure. Peroxynitrite is a reactive nitrogen species that is particularly harmful to proteins. It has been implicated in the development of certain cancers, hepatitis, and chronic inflammation. In the skin, peroxynitrite contributes to the breakdown of vital proteins, such as collagen.
Singlet Oxygen is generated in the skin by by UV. In vivo, it is linked to the oxidation of LDL cholesterol and cardiovascular disease. Singlet oxygen is highly unstable and durable. Carotenoids are very effective at scavenging singlet oxygen. Superoxide Anion is a precursor of all other reactive oxygen species and sometimes is referred to as “the mother of free radicals.” It is highly toxic and contributes to lipid and DNA damage. Antioxidants that scavenge superoxide anion also help prevent the formation of radicals such as hydrogen peroxide and hydroxyl. Superoxide anion has been linked to hypertension and cardiovascular damage.
Recently, Brunswick Labs has introduced a new test called ORAC6.0. This test expands the ORAC platform to measure the antioxidant capacity against each of the five primary reactive oxygen species mentioned above as well as Hypochlorite (HOCl) which is another important free radical that is commonly found in the body as a by-product of the metabolism of other free radicals. Direct reaction of HOCl with plasmid DNA gives rise to single- and double-strand breaks via chloramine-mediated reactions. ORAC6.0 substantially improves broad-spectrum antioxidant analysis and gives evidence of the diverse antioxidant potential of natural products against radicals other than just peroxyl. Brunswick Labs’ research shows that the antioxidants found in a wide range of natural products are effective against these primary radicals, and that in many cases a preponderance of a product’s antioxidant capacity is described by performance against the six free radicals included to the ORAC6.0 panel.
RESULTS OF ULTIMATE PROTECTOR+ ORAC6.0 TEST
Recently [August/2019] Brunswick Labs has tested ULTIMATE PROTECTOR+™ using the new ORAC6.0 tests. The results reveal an incredible overall ORAC6.0 value of 272,743 µmole TE/gram (i.e., 272,743 per gram!). In addition, the results show that the formula offers excellent protection against all of the six types of free radicals. The overall daily ORAC6.0™ value for six capsules obtained by adding the values for each free radical type is 968,237 units (272,743 units x 3.55 g)! Today I discuss HPDI’s newly updated ULTIMATE PROTECTOR+ antioxidant, cell protection, and Nrf2 activator formula. I first formulated Ultimate Protector in 2012 after I learning about plant-based Nrf2 activators.
My original idea behind developing Ultimate Protector was to unite three design elements in a single formula preventing and ameliorating free-radical damage in the body. 3 – POTENT NRF2 ACTIVATORS
The science on Nrf2 activators clearly shows a wide variety of plant polyphenols act endogenously to cause genetic transcription of many protective enzymes, like superoxide dismutase, glutathione transferase, and heme oxygenase. Many well-known, well-researched Nrf2 activators are high ORAC5.0 antioxidants. These first act as antioxidants giving up an electron, and then act as weak pro-oxidants needed to stimulate Nrf2 activity. In Ultimate Protector+ these ingredients include green tea extract, whole grape extract, curcumin, resveratrol, bilberry, and mangosteen. In addition, ingredients such as extracts of apple, blueberry, cranberry, pomegranate, blueberry, apple, chokeberry, and goji berry are shown in studies to be important Nrf2 activators.

In this article, I will provide greater insight into the natural sources of Nrf2 activators and how they perform in the body.
SOME KEY ENZYMES MODULATED BY Nrf2 ACTIVATORS
Activation of Nrf2 results in the induction of many cytoprotective proteins. We have seen articles that claim over 200 different enzymes can be produced in the body by Nrf2 activators, but have also seen reference that over 4,000 enzymes may be produced! Examples of some of the key enzymes are shown below:
NAD(P)H quinone oxidoreductase 1 – a prototypical Nrf2 target gene that catalyzes the reduction and detoxification of highly reactive quinones that can cause redox cycling and oxidative stress.
Superoxide dismutases (SOD) – enzymes that catalyze the dismutation of superoxide (O2−) into oxygen and hydrogen peroxide. Thus, they are an important antioxidant defense in nearly all cells exposed to oxygen where superoxide is one of the main reactive oxygen species. SOD is known to provide powerful antinflammatory activity.
Glutamate-cysteine ligase which is the rate-limiting step in the synthesis of glutathione (GSH), a very powerful endogenous antioxidant. Glutamate-cysteine ligase is a characteristic Nrf2 target gene, which establishes Nrf2 as a regulator of glutathione, one of the most important antioxidants in the body.
Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) is an enzyme that catalyzes the breakdown of heme into the antioxidant biliverdin, the anti-inflammatory agent carbon monoxide, and iron. HO-1 is a Nrf2 target gene that has been shown to protect from a variety of pathologies, including sepsis, hypertension, atherosclerosis, acute lung injury, kidney injury, and pain.
The glutathione S-transferase (GST) family includes cytosolic, mitochondrial, and microsomal enzymes that catalyze the conjugation of GSH with endogenous and xenobiotic electrophiles. After detoxification by GSH conjugation catalyzed by GSTs, the body can eliminate potentially harmful and toxic compounds. GSTs are induced by Nrf2 activation and represent an important route of detoxification.
The UDP-glucuronosyltransferas (UGT) family catalyze the conjugation of a glucuronic acid moiety to a variety of endogenous and exogenous substances, making them more water soluble and readily excreted. Important substrates for glucuronidation include bilirubin, and acetaminophen. Nrf2 has been shown to induce UGT1A1 and UGT1A6.
Multidrug resistance-associated proteins (Mrps) are important membrane transporters that efflux various compounds from various organs and into bile or plasma, with subsequent excretion in the feces or urine, respectively. Mrps have been shown to be upregulated by Nrf2 and alteration in their expression can dramatically alter the pharmacokinetics and toxicity of compounds.
NATURAL FOODS AND FOOD EXTRACTS PROMOTE THE EXPRESSION OF Nrf2
The March 2011 Epub Biochemical Basis for Functional Ingredient Design from Fruits reports: “Functional food ingredients (nutraceuticals) in fruits range from small molecular components, such as the secondary plant products, to macromolecular entities, e.g., pectin and cellulose, that provide several health benefits. In fruits, the most visible functional ingredients are the color components anthocyanins and carotenoids.
“In addition, several other secondary plant products, including terpenes, show health beneficial activities. A common feature of several functional ingredients is their antioxidant function. For example, reactive oxygen species (ROS) can be oxidized and stabilized by flavonoid components, and the flavonoid radical can undergo electron rearrangement stabilizing the flavonoid radical. Compounds that possess an orthodihydroxy or quinone structure can interact with cellular proteins in the Keap1/Nrf2/ARE pathway to activate the transcription of antioxidant enzymes.
“Carotenoids and flavonoids can also exert their action by modulating the signal transduction and gene expression within the cell. Recent results suggest that these activities are primarily responsible for the health benefits associated with the consumption of fruits and vegetables.”
One of the interesting aspects of the extensive research that has been conducted is the fact that many of the polyphenols that have been shown to activate Nrf2 have been used in natural healing formulas for many years. For example, an article in a November 2010 production titled Nutraceutical antioxidants as novel neuroprotective agentexpands on the classes of “antioxidant” compounds that are neuroprotective and operate either via direct antioxidant action or via the keap1-Nrf2 pathway:
“A variety of antioxidant compounds derived from natural products (nutraceuticals) have demonstrated neuroprotective activity in either in vitro or in vivo models of neuronal cell death or neurodegeneration, respectively. These natural antioxidants fall into several distinct groups based on their chemical structures: (1) flavonoid polyphenols like epigallocatechin 3-gallate (EGCG) from green tea and quercetin from apples; (2) non-flavonoid polyphenols such as curcumin from tumeric and resveratrol from giant knotweed and grapes; (3) phenolic acids or phenolic diterpenes such as rosmarinic acid or carnosic acid, respectively, both from rosemary; and (4) organosulfur compounds including the isothiocyanate, L-sulforaphane, from broccoli and the thiosulfonate allicin, from garlic.
“All of these compounds are generally considered to be antioxidants. They may be classified this way either because they directly scavenge free radicals or they indirectly increase endogenous cellular antioxidant defenses, for example, via activation of the nuclear factor erythroid-derived 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) transcription factor pathway. Alternative mechanisms of action have also been suggested for the neuroprotective effects of these compounds such as modulation of signal transduction cascades or effects on gene expression. Here, we review the literature pertaining to these various classes of nutraceutical antioxidants and discuss their potential therapeutic value in neurodegenerative diseases.”
DIETARY FLAVONOIDS AS NRF2 ACTIVATORS
One of the ways dietary flavonoids work to confer their multiple health effects is via the keap1-Nrf2 pathway. That is substances which are both themselves antioxidants and activators of the keap1-Nrf2 pathway produce significant results through keap1-Nrf2 and activating the body’s own antioxidant and defensive systems.
Flavonoids are a large family of polyphenolic compounds synthesized by plants. Many of the common dietary flavonoids are shown in Table 1 below along with their common food sources.
Catechins: Teas (particularly green and white), chocolate, grapes, berries, apples Theaflavins, Thearubigins: Teas (particularly black and oolong) Proanthocyanidins: Chocolate, apples, berries, red grapes, red wine.
Hesperetin, Naringenin, Eriodictyol
Citrus fruits and juices, e.g., oranges, grapefruits, lemons.
In addition to flavonoids many other plant based substances appear to produce health benefits through hormetic effects mediated by Nrf2. The December 2011 publication Nutritional antioxidants and adaptive cell responses: an updatereports: “Many plant antioxidants, intaken through the daily diet or plant-derived dietary supplements, have been shown able to prevent free radical-related diseases by counteracting cell oxidative stress. However, it is now considered that the in vivo beneficial effects of these phytochemicals are unlikely to be explained just by their antioxidant capability.
“Several plant antioxidants exhibit hormetic properties, by acting as ‘low-dose stressors’ that may prepare cells to resist more severe stress. In fact, low doses of these phytochemicals activate cell signaling pathways (being the most prominent examples the modulation of the Nrf2/Keap1 pathway, the NF-κB pathway and the Sirtuin-FOXO pathway) but high doses are cytotoxic.
“Herein we review the adaptive responses induced by the most known plant hormetic antioxidants, which are sulforaphane, resveratrol, curcumin, flavonoids, green tea catechins and diallylsulphides [in garlic], as well as the molecular mechanisms involved in such responses. Furthermore, this review outlines that the hormetic properties of these bioactive plant antioxidants might be successfully employed for realizing health-promoting dietary interventions especially in the field of neurodegenerative diseases and cancer.”
INTERESTING FACTS REGARDING NRF2 ACTIVATORS
1) An interesting fact is that Nrf2 is ubiquitously expressed with the highest concentrations (in descending order) in the kidney, muscle, lung, heart, liver, and brain.
2) Another important fact is that the well-known nutrition supplement lipoic acid is a potent activator of Nrf2 and thus increases Gluthatione levels, which may explain its protective effect against diabetic co-morbidities. Additionally, the nutritional supplements tocotrienols (active forms of Vitamin E) and N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine (NAC) are also effective Nrf2 activators!
3) We have observed that the natural plant substances with the highest ORAC5.0 values appear to be among the most effective Nrf2 activators. For example, see the table below. In particular, note that Curcumin (98%), Grape Seed Extract, Green Tea Extract, and Reservatrol which are commonly used for their excellent Nrf2 activator effects are the most powerful in-vitro antioxidants . NEUROPROTECTION BY POLYPHENOL STIMULATION OF THE NRF2 / ARE PATHWAY
Below are two abstracts that discuss how modulation of the Nrf2/ARE pathway by food polyphenols can provide neuroprotection through the activation of the heme-oxygenase enzyme.
In recent years, there has been a growing interest, supported by a large number of experimental and epidemiological studies, for the beneficial effects of some phenolic substances, contained in commonly used spices and herbs, in preventing various age-related pathologic conditions, ranging from cancer to neurodegenerative diseases. Although the exact mechanisms by which polyphenols promote these effects remain to be elucidated, several reports have shown their ability to stimulate a general xenobiotic response in the target cells, activating multiple defense genes.
Data from our and other laboratories have previously demonstrated that curcumin, the yellow pigment of curry, strongly induces heme-oxygenase-1 (HO-1) expression and activity in different brain cells via the activation of heterodimers of NF-E2-related factors 2 (Nrf2)/antioxidant responsive element (ARE) pathway. Many studies clearly demonstrate that activation of Nrf2 target genes, and particularly HO-1, in astrocytes and neurons is strongly protective against inflammation, oxidative damage, and cell death. In the central nervous system, the HO system has been reported to be very active, and its modulation seems to play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disorders.
Recent and unpublished data from our group revealed that low concentrations of epigallocatechin-3-gallate, the major green tea catechin, induces HO-1 by ARE/Nrf2 pathway in hippocampal neurons, and by this induction, it is able to protect neurons against different models of oxidative damages. Furthermore, we have demonstrated that other phenolics, such as caffeic acid phenethyl ester and ethyl ferulate, are also able to protect neurons via HO-1 induction. These studies identify a novel class of compounds that could be used for therapeutic purposes as preventive agents against cognitive decline.
Oxidative stress induced by hyperglycemia is a key factor in the pathogenesis of diabetic complications, such as neuropathy. Recently, green tea catechins have received much attention, as they can facilitate a number of antioxidative mechanisms and improve glycemic control. The aim of this study was to investigate the cytoprotective effects of (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) against oxidative stress damage in a cell line of rat neurons. The role of heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1) induction by EGCG and the transcriptional mechanisms involved were also evaluated.
Immortalized rat neurons (H 19-7) were exposed to various concentrations of EGCG (10-200 microM). After treatments (6 or 24 hours), cells were harvested for the determination of heme oxygenase activity, mRNA levels, and protein expression. Nuclear levels of Nrf2, a transcriptional factor involved in HO-1 activation, were also measured. Neurons were pretreated for 12 hours with EGCG 50 microM or EGCG 50 microM + zinc protoporphyrin IX 10 microM and then exposed for 2 hours to 50 mmicro/mL glucose-oxidase before cell viability was determined.
In cultured neurons, elevated expression of HO-1 mRNA and protein were detected after 6 hours of incubation with 25-100 microM EGCG, and its induction relates with the activation of Nrf2. Interestingly, pre-incubation (12 hours) with EGCG 50 microM resulted in an enhanced cellular resistance to glucose oxidase-mediated oxidative damage; this cytoprotective effect was considerably attenuated by zinc protoporphyrin IX, an inhibitor of heme oxygenase activity.
In this study, we demonstrated that EGCG, the major green tea catechin, induced HO-1 expression in cultured neurons, possibly by activation of the transcription factor Nrf2, and by this mechanism was able to protect against oxidative stress-induced cell death.
The following review article abstract shows how natural products containing Nrf2 activator/antioxidant ingredients might be used to support health and anti-aging.
Abstract: Nrf2 (nuclear erythroid 2-related factor 2) is a basic region leucine-zipper transcription factor which binds to the antioxidant response element (ARE) and thereby regulates the expression of a large battery of genes involved in the cellular antioxidant and anti-inflammatory defence as well as mitochondrial protection. As oxidative stress, inflammation and mitochondrial dysfunctions have been identified as important pathomechanisms in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), this signaling cascade has gained interest both with respect to ALS pathogenesis and therapy. Nrf2 and Keap1 expressions are reduced in motor neurons in postmortem ALS tissue.
Nrf2-activating compounds have shown therapeutic efficacy in the ALS mouse model and other neurodegenerative disease models. Alterations in Nrf2 and Keap1 expression and dysregulation of the Nrf2/ARE signalling program could contribute to the chronic motor neuron degeneration in ALS and other neurodegenerative diseases. Therefore, Nrf2 emerges as a key neuroprotective molecule in neurodegenerative diseases.
Our recent studies strongly support that the Nrf2/ARE signalling pathway is an important mediator of neuroprotection and therefore represents a promising target for development of novel therapies against ALS, Parkinson’s disease (PD), Huntington’s disease (HD), and Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Simultaneous blockage of disease-specific broad toxic signaling cascades in motor neurons and glia may ultimately lead to more efficient neuroprotection in ALS. Stimulation of defense mechanisms that modulate neuroprotective genes which affect both neuronal and glial functions is a novel therapeutic approach and holds great promise. A key molecule to affect a variety of defense mechanisms is the transcription factor Nrf2 which activates the Nrf2/ARE signaling program. Nrf2 acts as master regulator of the cellular antioxidant response by stimulation of over 250 phase II genes that should be referred to as “prolife genes” since they save cells from death.
Nrf2 activation can at once regulate the expression of multiple cytoprotective enzymes that are capable of simultaneous inhibition of major pathogenic pathways described in ALS such as oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and mitochondrial dysfunction. Decreased Nrf2 expression was found in motor neurons in ALS postmortem brain and spinal cord. We have established the proof-of-concept that the Nrf2/ARE program is a viable target with excellent therapeutic potential for ALS. While there are still multiple gaps of knowledge on the path from Nrf2 dissociation to nuclear localization and its action as transcription factor, activation of the Nrf2 signaling cascade represents a novel and unique attempt to find a cure for ALS and other neurodegenerative diseases by fortifying the intrinsic defense mechanisms of neurons.
In this article I have shown how foods such as fruits, vegetables, herbs, and their extracts can stimulate extremely powerful protective enzymes in the body that work to keep us healthy. 1) NON-GMO VITAMIN C / ASCORBIC ACID
High-quality, USP grade Vitamin C has been obtained historically from corn, potatoes, and/or beets. Unfortunately, many of these sources have to a large extent gone to genetically modified (GMO) variants. However, with highly refined production methods and the use of PCR testing, we have been able to obtain final products that are free from GMOs.
In nature, Vitamin C is found generally in plant sources containing polyphenols. Vitamin C and polyphenols work together to provide a high level of antioxidant protection and they support the function of each other in the process. For example, Vitamin C is needed by the body to produce collagen and certain polyphenols (especially oligomeric proanthocyanidins) (OPCs) crosslink the collagen and make it stronger.
2) EXTREMELY HIGH ORAC SOURCES
Free radicals are reactive species that can have adverse effects on normal physiological functions. Studies associate the six major types of free radicals (i.e., hydroxyl, peroxyl, peroxynitrite, singlet oxygen, superoxide anion, and hypochlorite) with health conditions such as cardiovascular disease, hypertension, breakdown of vital proteins, chronic inflammation, Alzheimer’s disease, and certain cancers. Avoiding free radical damage is the goal.
Antioxidants function as a vital line of defense against free radicals by blocking their attack on DNA, vital proteins, lipids, and amino acids. Until now, efforts to identify the effect of antioxidants on all six types of free radicals were constrained by limited testing procedures. However, new technological developments have resulted in a comprehensive testing method developed by Brunswick Labs called the Total ORAC6.0 assay. Because of the development of the Total ORAC6.0 test, it is now possible to target and measure the effects of antioxidants on the six major types of free radicals found in the body.
Recently [8/2019] Brunswick Labs has tested ULTIMATE PROTECTOR+™ using the new ORAC6.0 test. The results reveal an incredible overall ORAC6.0 value of 272,743 µmole TE/gram (i.e., 272,743 per gram!). This corresponds to a total ORAC6.0 value per of over 968,000 μmole TE per serving of 6 six small capsules. In addition, the ORAC5.0 value was measured to be over 950,000 μmole TE per serving. The results have shown that the formula offers excellent protection against all of the six major types of free radicals found in the body.
3) NRF2 TRANSCRIPTION FACTOR ACTIVATORS
In order to survive under a variety of environmental or intracellular stresses, our cells have developed highly efficient protective mechanisms to protect themselves from oxidative or electrophilic challenges. Proteins that comprise phase II detoxification and antioxidant enzymes provide an enzymatic line of defense against reactive oxygen species (ROS). These enzymes include superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione S-transferase (GST), and glutamate cysteine ligase.
Induction of phase II and antioxidant enzymes are regulated at the DNA/gene level by an antioxidant responsive element (ARE). ARE-mediated gene expression plays a central role in the cellular defense against cellular oxidative damage. Experimental evidence supports the view that induction of ARE-mediated cytoprotective enzymes is a critical and sufficient mechanism to enable protection against disease provoked by environmental and endogenous insults.
One of the key ARE-binding transcription factors is Nrf2. Induction of cytoprotective enzymes in response to ROS, electrophiles, and phytochemicals is a cellular event that is highly dependent on Nrf2 protein. By activating Nrf2 signaling, phytochemicals can increase cellular detoxification and antioxidant enzymes, thereby enhancing removal of ROS and toxic chemicals and preventing disease. Numerous research studies carried out over the last 15 years have demonstrated the effectiveness of a very wide range of Nrf2 activators extracted from fruits, vegetables, and herbs.
For example, a study with sulforaphane (an isothiocyanate present abundantly in cruciferous vegetables) shows that oral administration of this phytochemical can effectively block benzo[a]pyrene-induced forestomach tumors in mice. This protective effect was abrogated in mice that could not produce Nrf2. This supports the critical role of phase II detoxification and antioxidant enzymes in the prevention of carcinogenesis by chemopreventive agents.
Nrf2 is normally bound in the cytoplasm of cells to a protein called KEAP1. However, when an appropriate phytochemical agent attaches to a kinase receptor on the cell wall a phosphate group is released that causes the Nrf2 to be released. Also, there are other mechanisms that allow Nrf2 to be released from KEAP1. The released Nrf2 then migrates into the cell nucleus and causes an antioxidant enzyme (e.g., superoxide dismutase (SOD)) to be fabricated and released. This endogenously produced enzyme then can protect against ROS, electrophiles, and other toxic agents.
In practical experience, it has been found that a combination of multiple polyphenols works significantly better than single ingredients. In fact, in one experiment it was found that a combination of five ingredients all known to be Nrf2 activators was 18 times more effective than any single ingredient. Furthermore, it was found that this combination of five ingredients was able to increase levels of SOD by 30% and catalase by 56% after 120 days of taking the combination.

Cranberry extract is an especially good source of antioxidant polyphenols. In animal studies, the polyphenols in cranberries have been found to decrease levels of total cholesterol and so-called “bad” cholesterol. Cranberries may also inhibit the growth of tumors in human breast tissue and lower the risk of both stomach ulcers and gum disease.

OTHER CRANBERRY INFORMATION
Cranberries hold significantly high amounts of phenolic flavonoid phytochemicals called oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPC’s). Scientific studies have shown that consumption of the berries have potential health benefits regarding cancer, aging and neurological diseases, inflammation, diabetes, and bacterial infections.
Antioxidant compounds in cranberry extract including OPC’s, anthocyanidin flavonoids, cyanidin, peonidin and quercetin may support cardiovascular health by counteracting against cholesterol plaque formation in the heart and blood vessels. Further, these compounds help the human body lower LDL cholesterol levels and increase HDL-good cholesterol levels in the blood.
Scientific studies show that cranberry juice consumption offers protection against gram-negative bacterial infections such as E.coli in the urinary system by inhibiting bacterial-attachment to the bladder and urethra.
It is known that cranberries turns urine acidic. This, together with the inhibition of bacterial adhesion helps prevent the formation of alkaline (calcium ammonium phosphate) stones in the urinary tract by working against proteus bacterial-infections.
In addition, the berries prevent plaque formation on the tooth enamel by interfering with the ability of the gram-negative bacterium, Streptococcus mutans, to stick to the surface. In this way cranberries helps prevent the development of cavities.
The berries are also good source of many vitamins like vitamin C, vitamin A, ß-carotene, lutein, zea-xanthin, and folate and minerals like potassium, and manganese.
Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) demonstrates cranberry at an ORAC score of 9584 µmol TE units per 100 g, one of the highest in the category of edible berries.
For thousands of years, the pomegranate has been extensively used as a source of food and medicine. Full of antioxidants, vitamin C and potassium, pomegranate has been used to control body weight, reduce cholesterol, fight against cell damage, and inhibit viral infections. Pomegranate extracts have anti-bacterial effects.
Pomegranates are rich in ellagic acid, gallic acid, lignans, polyphenols and other bioactive compounds, and have been shown to lower blood pressure and enhance vascular function. Furthermore, it can offset some of the negative effects of medications and chemicals. These compounds occur naturally in its peel, seeds, leaf and juice. The seeds are high in p-coumaric acid, plant sterols, tannins and fatty acids. In addition to their antihypertensive effects, they may help reduce blood sugar levels.
Pomegranate fruit is a rounded berry with a thick reddish skin covering approximately 200–1400 white to deep red or purple seeds. Pomegranate seeds are edible and hold strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties due to their high content of hydrolysable tannins and anthocyanins. As compared to the antioxidant activity of vitamin E, β-carotene, and ascorbic acid, the pomegranate antioxidants appear unique due to combinations of a wide array of polyphenols, having a broader range of action against several types of free radicals. As compared to the recognized antioxidants in red wine and green tea, anthocyanins from pomegranate fruit possess significantly higher antioxidant activity.
Pomegranate has been used in various medicinal systems of medicine for the treatment and therapy of a multitude of diseases and ailments. In the ancient Indian medicinal system, i.e., in Ayurvedic medicine, the pomegranate was considered to be a whole pharmacy unto itself. It was recommended to be used as an antiparasitic agent and to treat diarrhea and ulcers. The medicinal properties of pomegranate have sparked significant interest in today’s scientific community as evidenced by the scientific research relating to health benefits of pomegranate that have been published in last few decades.
Studies have shown that pomegranate and its constituents can efficiently affect multiple signaling pathways involved in inflammation, cellular transformation, hyperproliferation, angiogenesis, initiation of tumorigenesis, and eventually suppressing the final steps of tumorigenesis and metastasis. The pomegranate constituents are shown to modulate transcription factors, pro-apoptotic proteins, anti-apoptotic proteins, cell cycle regulator molecules, protein kinases, cell adhesion molecules, pro-inflammatory mediators, and growth factors.
Aronia melanocarpa (black chokeberry) has attracted scientific interest due to its deep purple, almost black pigmentation that arises from dense contents of polyphenols, especially anthocyanins. Total polyphenol content is 1752 mg per 100 g in fresh berries, anthocyanin content is 1480 mg per 100 g, and proanthocyanidin concentration is 664 mg per 100 g. These values are among the highest measured in plants to date.
The plant produces these pigments mainly in the leaves and skin of the berries to protect the pulp and seeds from constant exposure to ultraviolet radiation and production of free radicals. By absorbing UV rays in the blue-purple spectrum, leaf and skin pigments filter intense sunlight, serve antioxidant functions and thereby have a role assuring regeneration of the species.
Analysis of polyphenols in chokeberries has identified the following individual chemicals (among hundreds known to exist in the plant kingdom): cyanidin-3-galactoside, cyanidin-3-arabinoside, quercetin-3-glycoside, epicatechin, caffeic acid, delphinidin, petunidin, pelargonidin, peonidin, and malvidin.All these except caffeic acid are members of the flavonoid category of phenolics.
In a standard measurement of antioxidant strength, the oxygen radical absorbance capacity or ORAC, demonstrates aronia to have one of the highest values yet recorded for a fruit — 16,062 micro moles of Trolox Eq. per 100 g. The components contributing to this high measurement were both anthocyanins and proanthocyanidins, with the proanthocyanidin level “among the highest in foods”, which may explain their potent astringent taste.
Goji Berries contain abundant polysaccharides (LBPs, comprising 5%–8% of the dried fruits), scopoletin (6-methoxy-7-hydroxycoumarin, also named chrysatropic acid, ecopoletin, gelseminic acid, and scopoletol), the glucosylated precursor, and stable vitamin C analog 2-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-L-ascorbic acid, carotenoids (zeaxanthin and β-carotene), betaine, cerebroside, β-sitosterol, flavonoids, amino acids, minerals, and vitamins (in particular, riboflavin, thiamin, and ascorbic acid).
The predominant carotenoid is zeaxanthin, which exists mainly as dipalmitate (also called physalien or physalin). The content of vitamin C (up to 42 mg/100 g) in goji berry (also known as wolfberry) is comparable to that of fresh lemon fruits. As to the seeds, they contain zeaxanthin (83%), β-cryptoxanthin (7%), β-carotene (0.9%), and mutatoxanthin (1.4%), as well as some minor carotenoids.
In fact, increasing lines of experimental studies have revealed that L. barbarum berries have a wide array of pharmacological activities, which is thought to be mainly due to its high LBPs content. Water-soluble LBPs are obtained using an extraction process that removes the lipid soluble components such as zeaxanthin and other carotenoids with alcohol. LBPs are estimated to comprise 5%–8% of LBFs and have a molecular weight ranging from 24 kDa to 241 kDa. LBPs consist of a complex mixture of highly branched and only partly characterized polysaccharides and proteoglycans.
The glycosidic part accounts, in most cases, for about 90%–95% of the mass and consists of arabinose, glucose, galactose, mannose, rhamnose, xylose, and galacturonic acid. LBPs are considered the most important functional constituents in LBFs. Different fractions of LBPs have different activities and the galacturonic acid content is an imperative factor for activities of LBP. The bioactivities of polysaccharides are often in reverse proportion with their molecular weights. Increasing lines of evidence from both preclinical and clinical studies support the medicinal, therapeutic, and health-promoting effects of LBPs.

Mangosteen extract in obtained from the skin and whole fruit for which numerous biological activities have been reported including: antimutagenic, antibacterial, hypocholesterolemic, antioxidant, and protective against tumorigenesis.
Mangosteen contains nutrients with antioxidant capacity, such as vitamin C and folate. Plus, it provides xanthones — a unique type of plant compound known to have strong antioxidant properties. In several test-tube and animal studies, the antioxidant activity of xanthones has resulted in anti-inflammatory, anticancer, anti-aging, heart protective, and antidiabetic effects.
Additionally, some research suggests that certain plant compounds in mangosteen may have antibacterial properties — which could benefit your immune health by combating potentially harmful bacteria. In a 30-day study in 59 people, those taking a mangosteen-containing supplement experienced reduced markers of inflammation and significantly greater increases in healthy immune cell numbers compared to those taking a placebo.
Apples contain a large concentration of flavonoids, as well as a variety of other phytochemicals, and the concentration of these phytochemicals may depend on many factors, such as cultivar of the apple, harvest and storage of the apples, and processing of the apples. The concentration of phytochemicals also varies greatly between the apple peels and the apple flesh.
Some of the most well studied antioxidant compounds in apples include quercetin-3-galactoside, quercetin-3-glucoside, quercetin-3-rhamnoside, catechin, epicatechin, procyanidin, cyanidin-3-galactoside, coumaric acid, chlorogenic acid, gallic acid, and phloridzin. Recently researchers have examined the average concentrations of the major phenolic compounds in six cultivars of apples. They found that the average phenolic concentrations among the six cultivars were: quercetin glycosides, 13.2 mg/100 g fruit; vitamin C, 12.8 mg/100 g fruit; procyanidin B, 9.35 mg/100 g fruit; chlorogenic acid, 9.02 mg/100 g fruit; epicatechin, 8.65 mg/100 g fruit; and phloretin glycosides, 5.59 mg/100 g fruit.
The compounds most commonly found in apple peels consist of the procyanidins, catechin, epicatechin, chlorogenic acid, phloridzin, and the quercetin conjugates. In the apple flesh, there is some catechin, procyanidin, epicatechin, and phloridzin, but these compounds are found in much lower concentrations than in the peels. Quercetin conjugates are found exclusively in the peel of the apples. Chlorogenic acid tends to be higher in the flesh than in the peel.
Because the apple peels contain more antioxidant compounds, especially quercetin, apple peels may have higher antioxidant activity and higher bioactivity than the apple flesh. Research showed that apples without the peels had less antioxidant activity than apples with the peels. Apples with the peels were also better able to inhibit cancer cell proliferation when compared to apples without the peels. More recent work has shown that apple peels contain anywhere from two to six times (depending on the variety) more phenolic compounds than in the flesh, and two to three times more flavonoids in the peels when compared to the flesh. The antioxidant activity of these peels was also much greater, ranging from two to six times greater in the peels when compared to the flesh, depending on the variety of the apple. This work is supported a study which found that rats consuming apple peels showed greater inhibition of lipid peroxidation and greater plasma antioxidant capacity when compared to rats fed apple flesh.
Many of these phytochemicals from apples have been widely studied, and many potential health benefits have been attributed to these specific phytochemicals. The procyanidins, epicatechin and catechin, have strong antioxidant activity and have been found to inhibit low density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation in vitro. In mice, catechin inhibits intestinal tumor formation and delays tumors onset. One study found that chlorogenic acid has very high alkyl peroxyl radical (ROO•) scavenging activity. Compared to about 18 other antioxidant compounds (including quercetin, gallic acid, α-tocopherol), chlorogenic was second only to rutin. Since ROO• may enhance tumor promotion and carcinogenesis, chlorogenic acid may add to the protective effect of apples against cancer. Chlorogenic acid has been found to inhibit 8-dehydroxy-deoxyguanosine formation in cellular DNA in a rat model following treatment with 4-nitroquinoline-1-oxide.
Quercetin is also a strong antioxidant, and is thought to have potential protective effects against both cancer and heart disease. Briefly, quercetin has been found to down regulate expression of mutant p53 in breast cancer cells, arrest human leukemic T-cells in G1, inhibit tyrosine kinase, and inhibit heat shock proteins. Quercetin has protected Caco-2 cells from lipid peroxidation induced by hydrogen peroxide and Fe2+. In mice liver treated with ethanol, quercetin decreased lipid oxidation and increased glutathione, protecting the liver from oxidative damage. Recently, it has been found that high doses of quercetin inhibit cell proliferation in colon carcinoma cell lines and in mammary adenocarcinoma cell lines, but at low doses quercetin increased cell proliferation (20% in colon cancer cells and 100% in breast cancer cells). However, low doses of quercetin (10 uM) inhibited cell proliferation in Mol-4 Human Leukemia cells and also induced apoptosis. Quercetin inhibited intestinal tumor growth in mice, but not in rats. Low levels of quercetin inhibited platelet aggregation, calcium mobilization, and tyrosine protein phosphorylation in platelets. Modulation of platelet activity may help prevent cardiovascular disease.
Wild bilberry and wild blueberry provide Nrf2 activators.
The key compounds in bilberry fruit are called anthocyanins and anthocyanosides. These compounds help build strong blood vessels and improve circulation to all areas of the body. They also prevent blood platelets from clumping together (helping to reduce the risk of blood clots), and they have antioxidant properties (preventing or reducing damage to cells from free radicals). Anthocyanins boost the production of rhodopsin, a pigment that improves night vision and helps the eye adapt to light changes.
Bilberry fruit is also rich in tannins, a substance that acts as an astringent. The tannins have anti-inflammatory properties and may help control diarrhea.
Bilberries have been shown to have the highest Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) rating of more than 20 fresh fruits and berries. The antioxidant properties of bilberries were shown to be even stronger than those of cranberries, raspberries, strawberries, plums, or cultivated blueberries.

Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is the most abundant catechin compound in green tea. It is well established that EGCG is a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent. Epidemiological studies show that consumption of 100 or more mg of EGCG per day is beneficial, as it is the most potent Nrf2 activator among all green tea catechins. EGCG exhibits robust diffusion through bodily tissues, including the endothelium of the blood brain barrier.
EGCG has the capacity to activate Nrf2/ARE and induce Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) expression. Several studies have shown that EGCG can also interact with kinases, causing the disassociation of Nrf2/Keap1 complex.
Protective effects of EGCG have been reported against ischemia/reperfusion injury. Administration of EGCG showed improved neurologic scores, reduced infarct volume, and ameliorated neuronal apoptosis due to increased GSH biosynthesis (via Nrf2 activation) and decreased ROS content. By inducing the expression of Nrf2 and HO-1, EGCG increases important endogenous antioxidants in microglial cells.
Whole Grape Extract contains highly bioavailable bioflavonoid complexes that in research studies have been shown to have powerful antioxidant capability. The Oligomeric Proanthocyanidins (OPCs) in grape extract are able to strengthen collagen fibers in aging or damaged connective tissue and can act as a preventative against connective tissue degradation. Some research indicates that anthocyanidins, which are found in extracts of grape seed, skin, and stems (but not in grape seed extract), can reduce oxidized glutathione while at the same time become reduced themselves. We live in a digital world enjoying convenient and limitless access to people, information, and the Internet of Things. What could be the downside? EMF for one.
What is EMF? EMF stands for “Electromagnetic Fields.” Electromagnetic fields encompass an entire spectrum of waves from extremely low frequencies (ELF) and visible light to ultra-high frequencies, such as cosmic rays (ionizing radiation).
What I refer to as “EMF” is the non-ionizing radiation to which we are exposed from cell phones and cell-phone towers, Wi-Fi, cellular data, Bluetooth, smart meters, computers, solar panel inverters, AC-to-DC transformers, power lines, and signals from other digital devices.
Is EMF harmful? Yes, there is a large body of scientific evidence showing EMF can be extremely harmful. Plenty of evidence has existed for decades. Do a search on PubMed. The harms of EMF are not publicized to consumers, especially by companies profiting from the digital and wireless revolutions.
The problem: every year there are more cell phone towers, Wi-Fi networks, “Smart” meters, and solar panel inverters. Soon California will mandate all new homes must have solar power, which means more EMF. Beyond this, there are millions of 5G antennas coming to your region, as part of the most powerful wireless network ever built.
Most health care professionals don’t know much about EMF and the importance of reducing exposure. However, there are a growing number of physicians who understand the dangers of EMF. They can make suggestions for lowering EMF exposure and may also refer you to EMF mitigation experts.
There are four types of EMF building biologists generally test for in homes: 1) Radiofrequency fields (RF), 2) magnetic fields, 3) electric fields, and 4) electromagnetic interference (EMI) or “dirty electricity.” All four types can cause health issues, so it is important to measure and isolate them so you can take action to reduce each type of field, respectively.
I tested my house and office for all four types of EMF—and found all four of them at high levels. I have since mitigated them to safer levels. I continue to find ways to reduce EMF and my exposures to them.
Ways that various types of EMF cause damage to biological systems:
• DNA Damage – Radiofrequency (RF) radiation induces both single- and double-stranded DNA breaks in human and animal cells. When DNA breaks are not properly repaired, the long-term damage results in adverse health effects.
• Voltage Gated Calcium Channels (VGCC) – EMF opens VGCCs causing cells to be flooded with calcium. This excess calcium disrupts multiple pathways, leading to various negative effects, including increased oxidative stress, disrupted nerve cell communication, and heart-related problems.
• Blood Brain Barrier – EMF can open the blood-brain barrier causing toxins or other harmful substances to enter the brain, and for the brain to leak” substances it requires, such as nutrients or neurotransmitters.
• Melatonin Hormone Reduction – EMF suppresses the production of melatonin, which is the antioxidant hormone responsible for repairing the body during sleep. When the body does not properly repair itself at night, problems can arise from immune-related conditions to premature aging.
• Microbiome Disruption – Just as all cells—including those in our body, are electrical, the organisms in our microbiome are electrical, too. There is evidence to show that our microbiome is harmed by EMF.
These are some of the ways that EMF can harm health. When you add them together, you begin to get a picture showing that EMF can cause significant harm to biological systems. Many scientists have suggested how EMF can contribute to almost any health condition from autism to Alzheimer’s disease.
Certain people, myself included, can immediately feel the effects of EMF exposure. Immediate or short-term effects can vary from fatigue, low-energy, and mental fogginess to head and body pains, and ringing in the ears (tinnitus). Terms used to describe the state of being sensitive to EMF are “Electromagnetic Sensitivity” and “Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity” (EHS).
Persons who suffer from EHS may range from 2% to 7% of the population or higher. Yet, whether or not you are “EHS” or feel effects from EMF exposure, science shows your body remains subject to adverse effects, including oxidative damage. That is, just because you do not feel it, does not mean it is not harmful.
Note: there is evidence that certain frequencies of EMF can support health. These often fall into the category of PEMF or “pulsed electromagnetic fields.” Another example: the Schumann resonances (7.82 Hz – 33.8 Hz), which are natural electromagnetic resonances created by lightning discharges from the ionosphere and the surface of the earth. The Schumann resonances are natural earth frequencies to which humans and all life has been exposed for millions of years.
MY EMF STORY
In my case, I never really noticed any problems until I had a solar panel power system installed on my roof-—on two different homes, one in 2014 and the other in 2017. In both cases, I was exposed for relatively long periods at short distances to smart meters and solar inverters, as well as solar-related Wi-Fi equipment.
Shortly after the first installation, I noticed fatigue, inability to concentrate, and pressure in my head. I did not initially make the connection between how I was feeling and the solar installation, which included a DC to AC inverter and two smart meters. I tried to keep my analog electric meter, but the solar company told me only digital smart meters are compatible with the solar power system.
My symptoms improved when I moved my desk away from the wall on whose opposite side the solar equipment was located. Shortly thereafter, we moved to a different home in our metropolitan area. A few years later, we had solar panels installed on our new house. I hoped to avoid symptoms similar to what I had experience previously. No such luck.
After the second solar installation in 2017, I again experienced fatigue, inability to concentrate, as well as pain in my head. I moved my desk and unplugged the solar company’s dedicated Wi-Fi unit that measures solar power generation. I felt better. But over a period of months I developed increasing low-tone tinnitus (ringing in the ears). At first it sounded like a small plane or a truck engine in the distance. The noise grew louder. Then it rumbled night and day. I realized it wasn’t an engine when I discovered the noise was significantly louder in my right ear. Alarmed, I began the process of eliminating possible causes. I finally eliminated all causes—except for EMF.
I read every book I could find about EMF. I read dozens of books, watched videos on the topic, and spoke to EMF experts. During this period my son chose to research EMF for science fair project. His initial idea was to build something for me (like a tinfoil helmet) to reduce my exposure. That idea evolved into measuring the EMF levels emitted by all electronics in our house.
My son’s science project would go on to regionals in our state. Yet for me, the most important thing was how it contributed to our understanding of EMF. It was a launch pad driving us deeper into research, and led to the implementation of many EMF mitigation strategies. Our entire family benefited from it.

It took months, but what we learned helped us take actions to mitigate EMF exposure. My tinnitus began fading and then diminished significantly so that it is not a daily issue for me. This was empowering for me because I took positive actions that made a difference in my health. The process continues because EMF is not going away. I remain vigilant. Yet, I hope my experience can help you reduce your EMF exposure, or avoid developing EMF sensitivity.
I still use cell phones and other digital devices. But I use them less and in much smarter ways. Ways that reduce my EMF exposure. Due to my research and experience with EMF, my awareness of its dangers is such that my thinking on the topic is forever changed. I can never take EMF safety for granted. That is a good thing.
EMF FROM SMART METERS, CELL PHONES, SOLAR INVERTERS, ETC.
Smart meters and DC-to-AC solar inverters can produce high levels of electromagnetic interference (EMI), which is one form of EMF. For more information on EMI, read Samuel Milham’s Dirty Electricity (see resources section below). After reading that book, I considered the possibility that EMI could be contributing to my problems with EMF.
I learned that any device (like an inverter) that converts DC power (say from solar panels) into AC power (home outlets) can add unwanted forms of electricity into the AC power. Clean (60 Hz) electricity becomes polluted by electromagnetic interference. The higher the levels of this EMI or “dirty” electricity, the greater the amount of health effects.
I obtained a broadband EMI meter from Greenwave to measure dirty electricity in my home. I measured EMI levels with the solar system running at midday. Recommended EMI levels are 25–50 millivolts. Yet, every outlet in the house measured almost 2,000 millivolts (1,986 millivolts to be precise!).
I shut off the solar inverter (disabling it and two smart meters) to measure baseline dirty electricity. EMI levels dropped to less than 200 millivolts! This meant one thing: components of our solar system causing high levels (1700+ millivolts) of dirty electricity.

My first solution was to purchase multiple plug-in Greenwave EMI filters. I installed them in about 25 outlets throughout my home. They reduced EMI significantly, but they did not reduce it much in the outlets nearest to area that houses the breaker box, solar inverter, and smart meters. A few outlets away from that area exhibited stubbornly high EMI (1,500+ millivolts).
After further research, I called Satic USA. Satic is a solar company that understands that EMI can affect people. They have products designed to condition an electrical system to remove dirty electricity. I purchased a line conditioner (Super Duty Power Perfect Box) from Satic specifically created to clean EMI from photovoltaic (PV) solar systems.
Note: Satic describes its line conditioners primarily as energy saving devices and protectors of electrical equipment. Clean power is more efficient. Yet, clean, conditioned AC power means reduced EMI. Thus, there is a human health component built-in, if you will.
The Power Perfect Box was installed by an electrician near our breaker box. This line conditioner (containing two harmonic rectifiers) removed many unwanted harmonics and transients induced into our homes’ electrical system by the solar inverter and smart meters.
Above all, I felt better. I could focus better. I slept better. So did everyone else in the house. And my tinnitus began to diminish.

I highly recommend obtaining a Power Perfect Box if you have a smart meter, solar power inverter, or dirty electricity (EMI) coming from your utility. Measure baseline dirty electricity in AC outlets using a broadband EMI meter (like Greenwave) after turning off your solar inverter and and smart meters.

At Satic’s recommendation, I kept the plug-in Greenwave filters in power outlets throughout my home. Between the line conditioner and the Greenwave filters, EMI now ranges from 15 millivolts to 300 millivolts in most outlets during the day. It is lowest (10–50 millivolts) at night when the solar system is not running.
Note: Many homes only require Greenwave plug-in filters because EMI (dirty electricity) levels are already low to moderate (100-300 millivolts), as measured by a Greenwave meter. However, a residence or office with a typical solar panel installation peaks at about 2,000 millivolts. Thus, a solar-powered home, office, or school may require a dedicated line conditioner to reduce EMI below reductions obtained by plug-in filters.
Multiple Greenwave filters plugged into AC outlets can further reduce EMI. The combination of a line conditioner (like Satic USA’s Power Perfect Box) and plug-in Greenwave filters works well to bring EMI down to safer levels.

NOT DONE WITH EMF YET
Another EMF issue arose. It seems my exposure to EMF from the home solar system prior to mitigation had led to a general sensitivity to EMF from other sources. That is, even though I had reduced my exposure to fields relating to the solar panel system and its parts (smart meters, solar inverter, solar-related Wi-Fi equipment), I had nevertheless become more sensitive to EMF from cell phones, cellular phone data, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, vehicle electronics, and other sources.
This sensitivity meant that mitigating dirty electricity (EMI) and reducing the tinnitus, while helpful, would not be sufficient to stop my suffering related to other EMF sources. It would take effort to identify the sources, and then remove or mitigate them.
Meters are your best friend when it comes to measuring EMF. About the same time I found the Greenwave EMI meter—EMI is just one type of EMF—I obtained three or four meters designed to measure other types of electromagnetic fields.
Some of my favorite meters are the Acoustimeter AM-10 (from EMFields), the Trifield 100XE (from Alpha Labs), and the ME3030B (from Gigahertz Solutions). Each meter can provide different insights into how much EMF exposure you receive from various sources

I began the process of measuring every type of device from iPads to cell phone chargers. I carried meters with me everywhere I went. During his science fair project, I helped my son measure and document readings from EMF sources at multiple distances. This data would be invaluable for my own mitigation efforts.
Overall, EMF levels were far greater than I expected, and from a wider variety of sources not just mobile phones or Wi-Fi routers. For example, wireless toys and cordless phones can be among the worst offenders in the RF frequencies. Even indoor hydroponic systems can generate high levels of dirty electricity.

Using my meters to obtain accurate measurements, I began reducing my exposure to all sources of EMF. The more I reduced EMF exposures, the better I felt. I noticed—and continue to notice—improvements in focus, mental energy, and overall well being.
EMF MITIGATION SOLUTIONS
If my EMF problems are a challenge to solve, then at least there are some upsides. My research has led me to solutions that allow me to heal and avoid symptoms. I am empowered to act upon my knowledge, and to share it.
In many ways, my experience has been a blessing. I am now aware of EMF dangers. While I would not wish anyone to have my experience, I hope that sharing my experience can help even a few people to avoid adverse health effects of EMF.
Here are some actions you can take that have helped me. I recommend you take these actions whether or not you feel symptoms or believe you are not affected by EMF.
• Create a wired Internet network in the home. Computers, laptops, and HDTVs can run on hardwired Ethernet connections. Smart phones and tablets can be hardwired using Ethernet adaptor cords. Use Wi-fi routers infrequently (minimize use), or not at all. Keep routers as far away from living areas as possible.
• Keep smart phones in airplane mode whenever possible. Minimize use of cell phones for calls. Use Air tube headsets and speaker phones whenever possible to provide distance from the device.
• Use an anti-radiation mobile phone case (like SafeSleeve). Avoid using mobile phones in a vehicles like cars and buses (as vehicles act as Faraday cages in which signals just bounce around). Keep away from phone or tablet when downloading data. Turn off Wi-Fi and cellular data on the phone most of the time.
• Never keep mobile phones in pockets or close to the body. Turn phone off or use airplane mode if phone must be kept in proximity to the body.
• Turn off electronics (phones, routers, Bluetooth devices) at night. Keep cell phones and other electronics out of your bedroom. Put your router on timer switch to shut off automatically at 9 or 10 pm.
• Use a landline phone. Yes, landline phone service still exists in most places.
• Obtain a good general EMF meter or two, such as a Trifield, Acoustimer, Cornet, or ME3030B (Gigahertz Solutions). Test your house and your devices.
• Test for electromagnetic interference (EMI) in household outlets using a EMI meter. Install a line conditioner and/or EMI filters (to reduce “dirty electricity”). You can obtain EMI meters and filters from Greenwave or Stetzer.
• Shield smart meters using “radiant barrier” anti-radiation materials, like Satic Shield (from Satic USA) or Reflectix (available at Home Depot). Place shielding on the interior wall opposite the meter. There are also metal meter cages for blocking fields coming from the face and sides of smart meter.
• Consider an in-line conditioner for your electrical system, especially if you have a smart meter or solar panels—or measure significant amounts (300+ millivolts) of dirty electricity on your wiring. I am pleased with Satic USA’s line conditioner (Power Perfect Box) that attaches to my electrical breaker box. If you contact Satic to order a line conditioner, ask to speak to Alden. • Keep a Faraday bag available for times when you want to block all signals to or from your smart phone or other devices. They are available for less than $20.
The more simple actions I take to reduce EMF, the better I feel. The list of actions I take to reduce EMF exposure grows weekly, it seems. Most of my symptoms have gone away. However, I have no desire to risk them coming back. Whenever possible, I avoid other people using cell phones, reduce time spent in places with Wi-Fi routers, smart meters, cell phone towers, etc.
I have become more sensitive than some of my meters (at least sometimes), so I feel that I am nearly a kind of meter myself in terms detecting the presence and magnitude of electromagnetic fields. Even so, I am often surprised by high EMF readings using my meters. Takeaway: Relying solely on yourself (no matter how sensitive you think you are), is not the best idea.
The most important thing you can do is to obtain a good EMF meter. Measure around your house, your devices, and appliances. Unless you actually have a meter, you will not likely optimize EMF reduction—because you can’t see EMFs. If cost is an issue, certain online stores let you rent EMF meters. Get started today!
BEST SUPPLEMENTS FOR EMF
The first lines of defense against EMF should be increasing distance from EMF sources, and reducing duration of exposure. These make a huge difference for protecting health.
One cannot control all sources of exposure. Neighbors have routers, smart meters, antennas, and other sources of EMF generating electronic pollution (“electrosmog”). Wi-Fi is nearly everywhere these days.
A huge component in EMF defense is nutritional supplements. Why? Because levels of EMF to which we are commonly exposed result in oxidative stress requiring high levels of antioxidants to quench free radicals. If I could only take a single supplement daily, it would be a multivitamin. I personally prefer HPDI’s Mighty Multi-Vite!. But Multi Two actually provides higher levels of important B vitamins.

Essential fatty acids are considered “essential” for all the reasons described. They are so critical for proper cellular function that not having sufficient essential fats (or the proper ratios) can impair important processes in the body. I believe EMF exposure puts additional stress on cells such that essential fats are even more necessary. So take an EFA supplement like Essential Fasts Plus E every day.

My list of favorite supplements for EMF could be much longer. I will mention two other types of supplements I think can be useful for most people. One is magnesium and the other is C-60 (or Carbon-60).
Magnesium is critical for supporting and enabling at least 400 enzymes in the body that are needed for the vital reactions in cells. EMF can damage or impair enzyme function. Therefore sufficient magnesium is essential for optimal cell function. One known problem is that most people are deficient in magnesium. When enzyme systems lack magnesium, they fail to properly function, resulting in many problems in the body, including lower energy production (ATP) and deficient metabolism.
Magnesium also balances calcium in cells. When EMF causes voltage gated calcium channels (VGCC) to open flooding cells with calcium, the presence of magnesium may help because one of the functions of magnesium is preventing cellular calcium imbalances. Not to mention the role of magnesium in energy production—as energy is required to pump excess calcium out of cells.
One of my favorite magnesium products is MYO-MAG. MYO-MAG is an advanced, synergistic magnesium formula that provides therapeutic levels of magnesium, plus nutrients that support the body’s utilization of magnesium.
MYO-MAG provides magnesium in the form of malate and diglycinate, as well as Vitamins B1, B2, and B6 (including coenzyme forms of these vitamins). The formula is buffered with a small amount of magnesium carbonate, and includes some manganese for mineral balance.
MYO-MAG therefore is a highly effective oral magnesium supplement with benefits that include less fatigue and greater energy, improved metabolic functions, cardiovascular support, nutrition for muscles, reduced spasms or cramps, help for migraine headaches, and many others.
The formula not only supports metabolism, but also cellular energy production (ATP) and optimal cellular function. It allows for rapid uptake and absorption of easily assimilated forms of magnesium. It also provides critical nutrients supporting energy production in the body.

MYO-MAG contains ingredients participating in the production of ATP. One vegetarian capsule contains 100 mg of magnesium and 440 mg of l-malic acid. Vitamins B1 and B2 are included both in standard and phosphorylated forms. Also included are Vitamin B6 in its phosphorylated form only, manganese (because high levels of magnesium can deplete the body of it), magnesium carbonate (a malic acid buffer), and glycine as the carrier for a portion of the magnesium and for the manganese. MYO-MAG is contained in a vegetarian capsule to ensure rapid assimilation.
Supplementing the diet with magnesium and malic acid may reverse conditions of low energy. Suggested daily amounts include 300-600 mg of magnesium and 1200–2400 mg of malic acid. Taking 3 to 8 MYO-MAG capsules daily can provide these amounts. Carbon-60 or C-60 is an experimental supplement providing extremely high antioxidant capacities. Carbon-60 provides research grade Carbon-60 Fullerenes (0.8 mg/ml) in organic olive oil. While this formula is formulated for research, it is known to be among the most powerful antioxidants available. The structure of the Fullerene allows for a large number of electrons to be held and repeatedly donated for the purpose of quenching free radicals. It therefore offers unrivaled antioxidant capacity in the body.
I will be talking a lot more about Carbon-60 in coming months. Suffice it to say that the research is showing that C-60 may be the future of antioxidant nutrition.
Few people have paid much attention to the dangers of EMF until recently. There is growing awareness that EMF contributes to health problems, as well as the mechanisms by which EMF damages the body. Given the rise in health conditions likely to be related to EMF exposure, it makes sense to take action now, rather than unnecessarily risking harmful effects of exposures.
There are many actions you take to protect yourself and your family. These include turning off Wi-Fi, putting cell phones on airplane mode, shielding smart meters (or keeping your analog meters), increasing distance from EMF sources, and reducing duration of exposure.
Taking nutritional supplements providing good levels of antioxidant nutrients and supporting metabolic functions makes a lot of sense, too. Supplements have helped me be healthier and recover faster from EMF exposures. They likely can help you and yours do the same.
