RESTORE GUT HEALTH FORMULA + VIDEO

Fred Liers PhD restore liquid mineral supplement gut healthHeard of RESTORE liquid mineral supplement? If not, you’re about to discover something important for gut health.

RESTORE™ is formulated to help restore gut health. It works by strengthening the integrity of tight junctions in your intestinal wall.

Maintaining tight junctions is important because they protect your body from substances entering the blood stream. Restore also supports the communications systems of the bacteria in your microbiome.

Tight junctions are natural barriers protecting the lining of your gut barrier, organs such as kidneys and heart, and the blood-brain barrier thereby keeping out unwanted substances. Even as we take in nutrients from the GI tract, the function of tight junctions is maintaining the integrity of the gut wall and other barriers that protect the body.

These days, our gut membrane has a tough job keeping out unwanted substances. Because tight junctions are weakened by many things, including highly processed foods, especially those containing gluten and gliadin, the herbicide glyphosate (the primary ingredient in RoundUp weedkiller), and other exposures like electromagnetic fields (EMF) from digital devices and Wi-Fi networks.

As a result of weakened tight junctions, undesirable substances from food proteins, harmful chemicals and other toxins can slip though into our bloodstream. This can lead to a powerful immune response that can weaken immunity and cause significant inflammation. Foreign substances in the bloodstream can also result in extreme food allergies and food sensitivities to various toxins entering the body.

We live in an age in which our microbiome health is under assault. Studies show our ancient ancestors had 20,000–30,000 different strains of beneficial bacteria in their GI tracts. Many people today have just 5,000 or less. Why is that?

There are many reasons for low microbiome diversity. These reasons include antiobiotic use (both from pharmaceuticals and foods), glyphosate (which essentially acts like an antibiotic), processed foods (especially those containing gluten and gliadin), and systemic degradation of the gut environment rendering it less hospitable for maintaining health populations of gut flora.

These impacts are significant because diversity in your microbiome not only supports gut health, but also appropriate brain health, immune system health, and overall vitality. Restore acts as a “microbiome fertilizer” helping establish and maintain healthy microbiota.

In fact, Restore contains important “redox” molecules produced millions of years ago by existing soil bacteria. These molecules are an important part of communications systems within the body between gut bacteria and with the body’s mitochondria. These communication systems play an important role in establishing proper homeostasis throughout the body.

REASONS TO USE RESTORE™

There are important reasons to try Restore—whether or not you experience significant gut health issues. These reasons include:

• Maintaining strong tight junctions for mega membrane health, and helping the body restore tight junction integrity

• Creating an environment in which beneficial bacteria can thrive

• Boosting microbiome diversity

• Healing the gut

• Mitigating the adverse effects substances like antibiotics, gluten/gliadin, glyphosate, and GMOs on microbiome health

• Supporting immune system function

• Protecting integrity of blood-brain barrier

Other benefits include support for respiratory wellness, enhancing mental clarity, and promoting proper homeostasis throughout the body.

For all these reasons and more, you should consider taking Restore. You can start by taking one teaspoon or less daily, and gradually increasing your dose to one tablespoon or more.Restore for gut health liquid supplement

I have taken Restore daily for more than two years, and benefit greatly from it. The most noticeable effects are a complete cessation of spring allergies (after two decades of worsening symptoms), greater clarity of thinking, and improved overall well being. I have seen other people get good results with a variety of conditions from dysbiosis to gluten/gliadin sensitivity.

MORE ABOUT RESTORE™

You can learn more about Restore on our website. Also, the Restore website offers in-depth information and videos. Here is how the Restore website and Dr. Zach Bush describe the formula:

Restore is a dietary supplement supplying first line defense against daily exposure to environmental and food-borne factors. It helps create an optimal environment or ecology in the gut membrane for beneficial or “good” bacteria to flourish. Beneficial gut flora protect your immune system and maintain health. Restore is a scientifically proven soil-derived mineral supplement designed to support protection of the intestinal walls.

Restore protects the entire gastrointestinal (GI) tract against agricultural herbicides, antibiotics, GMOs, gluten, and food-borne toxins. It helps create an environment in which 20,000–30,000 different strains of beneficial gut bacteria can thrive. This is a far different mode of action from probiotics, most of which contain just 3–30 strains of beneficial bacteria.

Restore helps create a strong immune system along with proper gut function. Microbiome balance and tight junction integrity are known to constitute a significant part of the immune system. They directly affect DNA transcription of cells to promote optimal health and prevent a leaky gut syndrome, thereby improving gut intelligence.

Seventy percent (70%) of our immune system is found in our gut. We need tens of thousands different strains of good gut bacteria to support a healthy immune system. Clinical experience, in addition to cell culture studies, support the theory that Restore’s proprietary formula creates the optimal environment in the gut to create a tight junction barrier and maintain our health and wellness.

Restore is a daily liquid supplement designed to support the protection of the entire gastrointestinal (GI) tract against agricultural herbicides, antibiotics, GMOs, gluten and food-borne toxins by helping to create an environment where between 20,000-30,000 different strains of good gut bacteria thrive. Most probiotics on the market contain fewer than 24 different strains of good gut bacteria.

TRY RESTORE™

Restore is ideal for individuals suffering from gut health issues. Yet, it is also excellent for supporting and maintaining gut health generally. That is the reason we at HPDI consider Restore important enough to designate as a foundational supplement, one of the top six supplements you need for good health.

Given the safety and effectiveness of Restore, there is broad applicability for its use. This is especially true because gut and microbiome health are under constant assault. These assaults range from multiple environmental and lifestyle factors—including poor diets high in processed foods, antibiotics in pharmaceuticals and animal foods—to massive glyphosate (herbicide) contamination of foods, soils, air, and water.

Let Restore be your first line of defense against assaults on your gut health, tight junctions, microbiome diversity, and immune function. As it says on the bottle, “Complete well-being begins in the gut.”

GUT HEALTH – INTESTINAL REJUVENATION FORMULA

Fred Liers PhD intestinal rejuvenation formula gut healthIntestinal and digestive tract health are critical for health. “All disease begins in the bowel” is a mantra for herbalists and natural healers. Healthy gut structure and function is important for digestion of food, assimilation of nutrients, elimination of wastes, detoxification, and even brain function and mental health due to reciprocal relations along the gut-brain axis.

Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula gut health

HPDI offers several products formulated for optimal gut health. That is, nutritional supplements intended to improve intestinal and digestive system health and function. These formulas include probiotics like Prescript-Assist™ (soil-based organisms), Restore For Gut Health (lignite formula), digestive enzymes, and Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula.

When used as part of an overall program of gut health and especially when combined with an excellent, whole-foods diet, these gut-health formulas help optimize intestinal health in a world fraught with environmental factors and lifestyle elements that can destroy GI tract health. I will talk about some of these products in this article. However, my main focus will be upon Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula.

INTESTINAL REJUVENATION FORMULA

Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula (IRF) is a high-fiber powdered supplement designed to act as a sweep to cleanse and help detoxify the entire gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Dr. Hank Liers formulated it as an effective drawing, detoxifying, and healing formula for the bowel. Within the HPDI supplement system, the formula is considered a specific-condition formula for gut health. That is, it is not a foundational supplement or an enhancement formula.

intestinal rejuvenation formula

Dr. Hank Liers’ Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula cleanses, detoxifies, purifies, and heals.

Detoxification is one of the main components of the HPDI Rejuvenation Program. As such, the capacity of Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula to detoxify the bowel makes it an integral supplement in the program.

Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula is a gentle-acting formula that may be taken daily or as needed. It is easily integrated into a gut health routine or regimen. Regular use is warranted for individuals desiring to maintain gut health. It is also beneficial for periodic use, such as seasonal cleansing, reduced bowel function, or constipation. Yet, it offers many benefits for chronic issues such as bowel pockets, diverticulosis, and diverticulitis. Acute uses include applications for upset stomach, food poisoning, diarrhea, as well as topical use for insect or snake bites.

Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula contains ingredients that help it to cleanse by sweeping wastes and deposits from the GI tract (psyllium, pectin, bentonite), coat and soothe (slippery elm bark and marshmallow root), sequester toxins (fibers and activated charcoal), heal and rebuild the mucosa (vitamin C and CGF).

GUT DYSFUNCTION AND TOXICITY

We live in an age where many environmental factors and lifestyle elements contribute to GI tract dysfunction. These include overuse of antibiotics and use of antibiotics in foods that destroy microbiome diversity. These elements also encompass agricultural toxins (e.g., glyphosate from RoundUp) used in growing GMO (genetically modified organisms) crops consumed in foods that contribute to weakening of tight junctions in the GI tract.

As such, it is imperative individuals take steps to restore proper function and rebuild gut health. Such steps may include consuming organic and non-GMO foods that neither contain herbicides like glyphosate nor GMOs.

In addition, overconsumption of wheat, simple carbohydrates, and sugars is a major element contributing to a pandemic of gut dysfunction. It is well known that wheat and other food crops containing gluten, gliadin, and related proteins readily contribute to GI tract problems among an ever increasing percentage of the population.

Books like William Davis’ Wheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight, and Find Your Path Back to Health, and David Perlmutter’s Grain Brain: The Surprising Truth About Wheat, Carbs, and Sugar – Your Brain’s Silent Killers and Brain Maker: The Power of Gut Microbes to Heal and Protect Your Brain for Life, document the adverse effects caused by the consumption of wheat and refined carbohydrates on health, especially gut and brain health.

Wheat in particular is singled out due to its extensive hybridization, which has created a very different genetic profile for the grain (despite the fact that it has not yet been genetically modified on a large scale). This has created high-yielding wheat variants that can cause or contribute to adverse health effects, and have not been subject to safety testing.

Yet, it is known that glyphosate herbicide is routinely sprayed on non-GMO crops—like wheat, oats, and beans—as a drying agent to speed harvesting. Consuming non-GMO foods may not be sufficient to prevent ingestion of toxic glyphosate and therefore avoid its adverse GI tract effects. Consumers are best served by consuming certified organic, biodynamic, chemical-free, and/or home grown foods.

The increase in gut health issues among the population is reflected both in the dramatic rise of diabetes, celiac disease, obesity, and brain maladies (like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Disease) in recent years.

The authors suggest that elimination or significant reductions in the consumption of wheat, sugar, and refined carbohydrates will go far in helping to improve and restore health. And that starts in the gut.

In addition to dietary changes and lifestyle modifications, a balanced fiber and gut-soothing formula like Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula can be part of a complete program to cleanse, heal, and rebuild the gut for improved GI tract function.

A complete program for gut health includes probiotics, which are the subject of various articles we have written that include recommendations for consuming dietary probiotics and probiotics, creating a probiotic-friendly lifestyle, as well as supplementing with probiotic formulas like Prescript-Assist.

Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula contributes to gut health differently than dietary or supplemental probiotics, yet is designed to work well with probiotics of all types to improve gut health. HPDI recommends a synergistic approach to gut health encompassing diverse approaches (and multiple products) combined to produce optimal results.

INTESTINAL REJUVENATION FORMULA SUPPORTS DETOXIFICATION

Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula cleanses the entire digestive tract by drawing toxins, clearing blockages, and supporting natural movement. It works by coating and adhering to the lining of the intestines. This unique action allows it to absorb fecal plaques and other debris, soften unhealthy deposits, and sweep them away for elimination in the stool.

Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula neutralizes and removes hundreds of toxins, including heavy metals (e.g., mercury and lead). It draws out many times its weight in material encrusted or trapped in the intestinal lining. It also provides nutrients known to nourish the GI tract, and that promote normal elimination functions.

INTESTINAL REJUVENATION FORMULA RELIEVES CONSTIPATION

Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula relieves symptoms of constipation, including gas, bloating, cramps, indigestion, and nausea caused by excessive waste in the bowel. It also soothes the intestinal lining and colon wall, and promotes a well-functioning colon. This means it can contribute to greater health not only through removal of toxins and intestinal blockages, but also by allowing greater absorption of nutrients from food (i.e., after the intestines are cleansed). It also can contribute to achieving normal weight by promoting elimination of old fecal matter (e.g., post-putrefactive deposits), and by helping to establish and maintain normal bowel function.

INTESTINAL REJUVENATION FORMULA SOOTHES AND SUPPORTS HEALING

Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula acts as a wonderful soothing agent for the mucous membrane linings of the entire intestinal tract, especially the colon. This makes it an important formula for individuals experiencing irritable bowel syndrome, spastic colon, colitis, Crohn’s disease, diverticulitis, or any digestive tract condition causing hot, burning, irritated, or bleeding bowels and/or diarrhea. This unique healing formula is also an excellent remedy for food poisoning, because it can absorb harmful bacteria and toxins.

INTESTINAL REJUVENATION FORMULA IS IDEAL FOR PERIODIC CLEANSING

Due to its excellent detoxification and intestinal cleansing properties, Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula is ideal for use in periodic cleansing regimens, such as bowel cleansing, liver cleansing, kidney cleansing, or many types of juice cleanses, fasts, or flushes.

When using Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula as part of a short-term cleansing regimen (3–30 days), it can be used at higher levels, such as up to 1 tablespoon 3–5 times daily, as needed.

Note: After a cleansing regimen, it is useful to repopulate the gut with beneficial bacteria using a high-quality probiotic formula such as Prescript-Assist™ (soil-based organisms).

INTESTINAL REJUVENATION FORMULA HELPS LOOSE STOOLS & DIARRHEA

Another benefit of Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula is its ability to stop loose stools and diarrhea. This is especially important in cases of acute diarrhea in which dehydration and inability to assimilate nutrients from foods creates a problem for health.

As noted, Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula helps regulate bowel function. It therefore can help constipated individuals become more regular. However, in cases of diarrhea, it can fill the GI tract with sufficient bulk (fiber) to slow the rate of excretion, as well as help prevent dehydration due to fluid loss.

Because of the safety and efficacy of Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula, it is also safe for use with children and pets. Be sure to give with sufficient water and scale down the dose appropriately depending on the size of a child or pet.

gut health intestinal rejuvenation formula

Ginger is an ingredient known to support gut health.

PSYLLIUM HUSK POWDER (organic)

Psyllium seed husks are soluble in water, expanding and becoming mucilaginous when moistened. Psyllium seed husks are indigestible in human beings and are used as a source of dietary fiber. They are used to relieve constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, diverticular disease, and diarrhea. They are also used as a regular dietary supplement to improve and maintain regular gastrointestinal (GI) transit.

The inert bulk of psyllium husks helps to provide a constant volume of solid material regardless of other aspects of the diet or any disease condition of the gut. Recent research also shows psyllium seed husks to be promising in lowering cholesterol and controlling diabetes.

APPLE PECTIN

As a dietary fiber, apple pectin is helpful in maintaining good digestive health. Pectin forms a colloidal solution in water and gels when cool. An indigestible, soluble fiber, apple pectin is a general intestinal regulator used in many healing preparations, especially as an anti-diarrheal agent. Researchers at the University of California, Davis (UCD), found that apple pectin acts as an antioxidant against the damaging portion of cholesterol in the blood stream.

It has been established that a diet rich in apple pectin may help protect against certain diseases. Research in Japan shows that apple pectin can act as a chemopreventive agent. Apple pectin helps maintain intestinal balance by cleansing the intestinal tract with its soluble and insoluble fibers.

Apple pectin tends to increase acidity in the large intestines and is advocated for those suffering from ulcer or colitis and for regulating blood pressure. Pectin is also effective in causing regressions in and preventing gallstones. There is also evidence that the regular use of apple pectin may lessen the severity of diabetes.

Apple pectin is known to draw radiation from the body. Russian doctors have found apple pectin to be among the most effective means for protecting against radiation when consuming contaminated foods is unavoidable. Pectin, along with vitamins and minerals, eliminates radionuclides ingested from foods. This is especially relevant given recent meltdowns and radiation releases from the nuclear complex in Fukushima, Japan. Radiation from this catastrophe has contaminated (and continues contaminating) food crops across the entire northern hemisphere (and beyond), especially crops grown in North America.

BENTONITE CLAY

Bentonite clay has a large and varied mineral content, including over 50 minerals. Seen under a high powered microscope, bentonite is composed of extremely minute rectangular particles. The wide surfaces are negatively charged and the edges are positively charged. Therefore, its adsorptive power is many thousand times more negative than positive. It has a negative electrical attraction for positively charged particles. In the human body, various toxic poisons are positively charged. The very minuteness of the particles give it a large surface area (about 1,000 square meters per gram) relative to its volume, thereby enabling it to pick up many times its own weight (as high as 40 times) in positively charged particles.

When bentonite clay absorbs water and swells, it stretches open like a highly porous sponge. Toxins (including pathogenic viruses, herbicides, and pesticides) are drawn into these spaces and bound through electrical attraction. The bentonite is eventually eliminated from the body with the toxins bound to its multiple surfaces. Diarrhea can be remedied through the use of bentonite clay because of its capacity to bind stools. Bentonite clay can act immediately to bind irritants in the gastrointestinal tract.

COLD-MILLED FLAX SEEDS (organically grown)

Flax seeds (Linum usitatissimum L.) contain essential fatty acids (an excellent vegetarian source of omega-3 alpha-linolenic acid), protein, soluble fiber, insoluble fiber, antioxidant lignans, minerals, and vitamins. Lignans are a phytoestrogens considered to be antioxidants. Flax seeds contain among the highest levels of lignans among all plant foods.

The unique properties of Heartland’s RCM™ Flax (Real Cold Milled) organic flaxseed provides enormous advantages over whole flax seeds, ground flax powders, and other milled flax seed products. In particular, cold-milled flax seeds offer readily assimilable omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids because of special no-heat processing that protects these delicate oils and makes them available for uptake into the body.

RCM™ Flax cold-milled flaxseed is processed using a unique, proprietary method that preserves the delicate oils and allows for optimal uptake of the oils and other nutrients (e.g., soluble fiber) into the body. That is, flax seeds must be milled into a flour or meal to obtain maximum benefits from its oils and dietary fiber. However, typical methods of grinding or pounding flaxseeds separate the oil from the seeds (and heat the oils), thereby causing the oils to oxidize and become rancid.

In contrast, cold milling is a unique process that does not involve heating delicate oils and keeps them protected within finely milled pieces of seed. Thus, cold-milled flax seed is not significantly oxidized and remains fresh for an extended period of time. Conversely, when flax seeds are harshly ground or crushed, the oils do not remain fresh because there is no inherent protection from oxidation. Cold milling allows the seed to retain and protect its oils because the process does not release the oils from the seeds .

RCM™ Flax offers a non-refrigerated shelf life of greater than 24 months. A study conducted at North Dakota State University confirms that peroxide levels of RCM™ Flax remain exceptionally low for an extended periods. While this flaxseed retains its freshness for an extended period, when refrigerated (or consumed within several months), it provides amazingly high levels of freshness.

The organic cold-milled flax seeds in Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula contain oil amounts varying between 38–45%, with the oil offering a high percentage (47–53%) of the omega-3 alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) and 15-18% omega-6 linoleic acid. Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) is an essential fatty acid acting in the human body as a substratum for the transformation into EPA and DHA through the action of desaturation and elongation enzymes. The seeds also contain some omega-6 essential fatty acids and exhibit a favorable omega-3 to omega-6 ratio of 3:1. Modern diets contain too few omega-3 fatty acids.

Cold-milled flax seeds possess 15–30% protein (typically 20%) and the amino acids of flax protein have no limiting factors in the adult diet (i.e., they are a complete protein source having all of the essential amino acids in an appropriate balance). Flax seeds are also a source of magnesium, calcium, potassium, phosphorus, zinc, and copper. They also have demonstrated antioxidant activity.

The most important antioxidants flax seeds provide are phytoestrogens known as lignans. Because cold milling flax seeds significantly reduces oxidation, this exceptional flax seed has great potential within the food industry when compared to other alpha-linolenic acid sources, such as typical ground flaxseed powders, which can exhibit rapid decomposition due to a lack of antioxidant protection from oxidation.

The human body easily digests flax seeds. The seed’s outer layer is rich in mucilloid soluble fiber (flax seed possesses 10-15% soluble fiber) and absorbs at least 4 times its weight in water. When mixed with water or stomach juices, the seeds form a gel that creates a physical barrier between the carbohydrates and the digestive enzymes that break them down. The carbohydrates thereby are digested and converted into glucose (blood sugar) at a slow, uniform rate. There is no insulin surge or spike needed to lower the blood sugar level. The water-retaining capacity of the gel also maintains bodily hydration (i.e., helping level out water intake) and electrolyte balance.

MARSHMALLOW ROOT POWDER (organic)

Considered the king of mucilaginous (gel-like) slippery plants, marshmallow offers a unique composition of about 37% starch, 11% mucilage, and 11% pectin (including flavonoids and phenolic acids). When it reaches the colon, marshmallow gel will soften hardened fecal plaques and help to remove them from colon walls. It also acts as a soothing coating and internal moisturizer for the entire digestive tract. Like chia seeds, it neutralizes irritants often found in the intestinal system, and thereby greatly relieves irritation to the mucous membrane lining of the digestive tract.

SLIPPERY ELM BARK POWDER (organic)

The health benefits of slippery elm are rooted mainly in its soothing properties. This mucilaginous herb is effective when used internally for coating and soothing mucous membranes while also absorbing toxins that can cause intestinal imbalances. Slippery elm is an effective remedy for duodenal ulcers, gastritis, diarrhea colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, hemorrhoids, and heartburn. The benefits of slippery elm also extend to being a simple food. As part of a normal diet, the inner bark of slippery elm can be ground and eaten as porridge. This porridge is extremely nutritious and high in antioxidants having a consistency and taste similar to oatmeal. It is also a wholesome and sustaining food for infants and invalids.

ACTIVATED WILLOW CHARCOAL (wildcrafted)

Activated charcoal is charcoal that has been treated with oxygen to open up millions of tiny pores between the carbon atoms. The use of special manufacturing techniques results in highly porous charcoals that have surface areas of 300–2,000 square meters per gram. Charcoal works to trap toxins through “adsorption.” When a material adsorbs something, it attaches to it via chemical attraction. The huge surface area of activated charcoal gives it countless bonding sites for adsorbing toxins.

When certain chemicals pass next to the carbon surface, they attach to the surface and become trapped. Activated charcoal is excellent for trapping carbon-based substances (i.e., organic chemicals), as well as other chemicals such as chlorine. It is known to trap over 20,000 organic chemicals. Many chemicals are not attracted to carbon (sodium, nitrates, etc.) so they pass through charcoal. Because charcoal is not “digested” like food, it may remain inside the GI tract for a time, thereby continuing to actively remove toxins via the bowel.

SPIRULINA PACIFICA

Research has shown that spirulina promotes digestion and bowel function. It suppresses bad bacteria (including E. coli and Candida albicans yeast) and stimulates beneficial flora, including lactobacillus and bifidobacteria. Healthy intestinal flora (i.e., “good” bacteria) are a foundation for good health. They increase absorption of nutrients from foods and help protect against infection. In Japan, researchers found that spirulina significantly reduces kidney toxicity caused by mercury and three pharmaceutical drugs. This suggests benefits for humans suffering heavy metal poisoning. Additional research found that rats consuming spirulina or chlorella algae eliminated seven times the amount of dioxin (a highly toxic chemical) when compared to a control diet.

INULIN / FRUCTOOLIGOSACCHARIDES (from Chicory Root)

Like other types of dietary fiber, inulin also has the benefits of enhancing digestive and intestinal functions, reducing cholesterol, and preventing disease. In addition, inulin has one other major health benefit: it is a prebiotic that feeds the healthy microflora that boost your immunity. Not only does inulin actively promote the growth of existing strains of probiotics in your colon, but it also encourages implantation, survival, and growth of freshly consumed probiotics. By boosting the survival and growth of beneficial probiotics in the inner ecosystem, inulin improves digestion, immunity, and disease-fighting capacity of the body.

GINGER ROOT POWDER (organic)

Ginger rhizome (Zingiber officinale) is an incredibly active and effective gastrointestinal aid with the following properties: 1) Contains a digestive enzyme whose effectiveness even exceeds that of papain; 2) Stimulates the flow of saliva and increases the concentration of the digestive enzyme amylase in the saliva; and 3) Activates peristalsis and increases intestinal muscle tone. Ginger is also known to be helpful in cases of nausea.

BIOVIN® GRAPE EXTRACT

BIOVIN® Grape Pulp, Skin & Seed Extract (>85% OPCs): The BioVin® grape extract in Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula is extracted by ethanol and water and contains the highest percentage of OPCs of any product on the market. OPCs, a class of bioflavonoids, are one of nature’s most powerful free-radical scavengers. As bioflavonoids, OPCs help to increase the effectiveness of Vitamin C. OPCs cross the blood-brain barrier to provide antioxidant protection to central nervous system tissue. Studies have clearly demonstrated that OPCs improve and normalize capillary activity, strengthening capillary walls. OPCs bind to collagen fibers, realigning them in the process to a more youthful, undamaged structure. Elasticity, flexibility, and strength are thereby restored to connective tissue.

LICORICE ROOT POWDER (organic)

Licorice root soothes the GI tract and aids intestinal health. Licorice root is used effectively in those individuals suffering from peptic ulcer and chronic gastritis. It is used to soothe coughs and reduce inflammation, soothe and heal ulcers and stomach inflammation, control blood sugar, and to balance hormones. Licorice is a potent antiviral agent and can be used to treat flu, herpes, and even hepatitis. Licorice is also a strong anti-inflammatory agent.

MAGNESIUM (from magnesium ascorbate)

Magnesium is important for the metabolism of many biologically active nutrients and substances, including calcium, potassium, phosphorus, zinc, copper, sodium, lead, cadmium, hydrochloric acid (HCl), acetylcholine, and nitric oxide (NO). It is required for more than 325 magnesium-dependent enzymes, cellular homeostasis, and activation of the B vitamin thiamin. It mediates the functions of the nervous and endocrine systems, supports proper muscle and nerve function, stabilizes heart rhythm, helps to regulate blood sugar levels, and supports normal blood pressure. Magnesium is important in energy metabolism and the synthesis of proteins.

CHLORELLA GROWTH FACTOR (CGF)

Chlorella Growth Factor (CGF) stimulates lactobaccilus (the “good” bacteria) to grow at four times the usual rate. Experiments with microorganisms, young animals, and children have demonstrated that CGF promotes faster than normal growth. In adults and mature organisms, CGF appears to enhance the functions of nucleic acids at the cellular level that relate to the production of proteins, enzymes, and energy. It also stimulates tissue repair and offers protection against toxic substances at the cellular level.

VITAMIN C (from magnesium ascorbate)

Vitamin C is known to perform many critical functions within the body involving detoxification, tissue building, immune enhancement, pain control, and controlling or killing pathogenic organisms. It is known to be helpful for wound and bone healing, healthy skin and eyes, infections, stress control, toxic exposure, and repairing damaged tissue of all types.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Additional Ingredients: Natural Lemon Flavor, Malic Acid, and Stevia Leaf Extract. These natural flavors and taste enhancers give the formula a pleasing taste and make it easier for individuals to consume.

DIRECTIONS: For long term, gentle rejuvenation of the intestinal tract take about one (1) teaspoon (about 1/3 scoop) several times daily away from food (by at least 20 minutes), or as directed by a health care professional. Place the powder in about 8 ounces of water, thoroughly mix (shake or stir), and drink immediately (before the formula becomes a gel too thick to easily consume).

For a more rapid healing cleanse take one tablespoon (one scoop) multiple times daily away from food (by at least 45 minutes). Add the powder to about 16 ounces of water, mix vigorously, and drink.

We recommend using a suitable container (such as a mason jar) for rapid mixing. Stir rapidly or shake vigorously (with lid attached).

Individuals suffering from conditions of severe diarrhea and loose stools can take one tablespoon (or more) multiple times daily (five times or more) and refrain from food. Put the powder in about 16 ounces of water per tablespoon, thoroughly mix, and drink immediately. In between servings it may be helpful to take 10–20 billion organisms of a multiple strain lactic acid bacteria formula (i.e., a probiotic such as Prescript-Assist). Place the formula directly in your mouth, chew, and then swallow.

While results can be obtained rapidly using this formula, it is most effective when used for longer-term gentle cleansing. Starting with lower doses and gradually increasing dosage often produces best results. This allows the body time to adjust to increased dosages (size and frequency) and facilitates greater therapeutic action from usage.

Note: Taking large amounts without sufficient liquid (e.g., water) or when first taking the formula can slow bowel transit time. Therefore, most individuals will benefit from starting at lower dosage levels and ensuring adequate fluid intake when consuming the formula.

External Applications: Make paste by mixing powder with water. Apply directly to skin or affected areas (e.g., stings, bites, wounds). Wrap with gauze, plastic, etc., and keep poultice moist. Use for up to six hours. Apply fresh poultice as needed. For more information, see the Insect / Bee / Snake Stings and Bites Supplement and Activity Schedule.

Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula does not contain wheat, gluten, rye, oats, corn, barley, soy, yeast, egg, sugar, dairy products, GMOs, wax, animal fats, preservatives, colorings, or artificial flavorings.

“Health begins in the gut,” the saying goes. If true, and it seems likely to be, then taking care of the GI tract is more important than ever. This makes sense given the prevalence and multiplication of environmental and lifestyle factors capable of damaging the gut.

These environmental and lifestyle factors include, but are not limited to, 1) the use of antibiotics (both prescribed and found in foods), 2) genetically modified organisms (GMO), 3) the presence in foods (and water, soil, and air) of herbicides like glyphosate sprayed on GMO crops; glyphosate can loosen tight junctions in the GI tract to allow food proteins into the bloodstream, 4) Food proteins (e.g., gluten and gliaden) capable of damaging the gut, 5) dysbiosis, 6) lack of microbiome diversity, and 7) many others.

The solution to these problems is complex, and partly resides in utilizing a combination of strategies and supplements capable of addressing the different aspects and causes of reduced or impaired gut function.

Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula represents one type of supplement known to be helpful in repairing, restoring, and maintaining healthy gut function.

PROLYT – Proteolytic Enzymes Formula

Dr. Hank Liers, PhD proteolytic enzymes prolyt integratedhealthIn the early 1990s one of my chiropractor clients asked me to formulate a proteolytic enzymes formula in capsule form. Specifically, he wanted trypsin, chymotrypsin, bromelain, and papain in the product. I added to this quercetin and grape seed extract for additional anti-inflammatory effect.

My company has been selling this formula under the name Prolyt ever since. It is best described as a full strength proteolytic enzymes formula with synergistic bioflavonoids. Several years ago when I became aware that most of the papayas grown in the world contained genetically modified organisms, I removed the papain and replaced it with curcuminoids from turmeric.

Prolyt today contains the proteolytic enzymes bromelain (from pineapple), trypsin (pancreatic enzyme), and chymotrypsin (pancreatic enzyme), and the polyphenols/bioflavonoids turmeric extract (95% curcuminoids), quercetin and oligomeric proanthocyanidins from grape seed extract in a veggie capsule. While bromelain is often blended with lactose to obtain a reduced standard strength, Prolyt contains the near full-strength proteolytic enzymes extracted naturally from the fruit.

OUR EXPERIENCES REGARDING PROLYT

In the late 1990s a friend of mine had a microscope and display system that allowed live blood analysis. This system enabled one to take a blood sample, put it on a slide, and view it on a TV monitor. Frequently, when he performed this analysis one could observe that the red blood cells were clumped together and not functioning well. He would then ask the person being tested to take two capsules of Prolyt and come back again in 30 minutes. The test was repeated and invariably the red blood cells acted like billiard balls, bouncing off one another and no longer clumping together.

One of my clients told me the story about two old men who loved to play golf but could hardly walk due to arthritis. He said once a week these men would buy a bottle of Prolyt, take a handful of the capsules, and proceed to the golf course out of pain long enough to play golf for the day.

A German health practitioner friend of mine told a client of his who was having all of his wisdom teeth removed to take 100 capsules of Prolyt daily after the surgery. His client did it and he found that he not only controlled his pain, but he healed rapidly in less than a week.

NUTRITIONAL CONSIDERATIONS & APPLICATIONS

PANCREATIC ENZYMES IN PROLYT

Pancreatic Enzymes: Prolyt may be used as an adjunct in protocols dealing with the digestion of proteins. Trypsin, a pancreatic enzyme, helps to break down large protein molecules by cutting protein chains at specific sites. The large protein molecule is actually a chain of smaller units called amino acids which are linked, end to end, in chains of hundreds. There are 20 different amino acids from which these protein chains are made. The specific site along the protein chain where trypsin is active are those with the amino acids lysine and arginine, two of the smaller amino acids.

The enzyme chymotrypsin, another pancreatic enzyme, also cuts the larger protein chain but at different sites from where trypsin cuts. Chymotrypsin makes its cut at positions along the protein chain that contain very large amino acids such as phenylalanine, tyrosine and tryptophan. The combination of trypsin and chymotrypsin (often along with bromelain) have been used in protocols for breaking down tumors in the body.

DR. GONZALES ON THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF PROTEOLYTIC ENZYMES

In a 1999 Clinical Pearls News interview, Dr. Nicholas J. Gonzalez had this to say about the use of pancreatic enzymes:

“I didn’t come up with the idea to use pancreatic enzymes to treat cancer. The Scottish embryologist, John Beard, who worked at the University of Edinburgh at the turn of the century, first proposed in 1906 that pancreatic proteolytic enzymes, in addition to their well-known digestive function, represent the body’s main defense against cancer. He further proposed that pancreatic enzymes would most likely be useful as a cancer treatment.

“During the first two decades of this century, a number of physicians, both in Europe and in the United States, used injectable pancreatic enzymes to treat advanced human cancer, often times (depending on the quality of the product) with great success. I have collected a number of reports from that time in the major medical journals documenting tumor regression and long-term survival in patients treated with enzyme therapy.

“I began researching the use of oral pancreatic proteolytic enzyme therapy as a treatment for cancer after completion of my second year at Cornell University Medical College in 1981. My research advisor at the time supported and directed my early work, and later supported me during my formal immunology fellowship. In terms of the theoretical foundation, the exact mechanism of action has never been demonstrated. After Beard’s death, the enzyme therapy was largely forgotten and certainly never generated any significant research effort until recently with the funding of my work.

“There are several studies from the 1960s showing, in an animal model, that orally ingested pancreatic enzymes have an anti-cancer effect, and might work through immune modulation, but these studies were preliminary and were never followed-up.

“Dr. Beard believed enzymes had to be injected to prevent destruction by hydrochloric acid in the stomach. However, recent evidence demonstrates that orally ingested pancreatic proteolytic enzymes are acid stable, pass intact into the small intestine and are absorbed through the intestinal mucosa into the blood stream as part of an enteropancreatic recycling process.

“It is clear from our extensive clinical experience that pancreatic proteolytic enzymes have a profound anti-neoplastic effect.”

BROMELAIN IN PROLYT

Bromelain is a mixture of proteolytic enzymes extracted from pineapple that digest proteins. It contains chemicals that when taken between meals might interfere with the growth of tumor cells and slow blood clotting. In addition, bromelain has been used in conditions such as 1) surgeries and injuries (including sports injuries), 2) sinusitis, 3) poor digestion, 4) inflammation, 5) infection, and 6) osteoarthritis.

Pineapple bromelain proteolytic enzymes

One study suggested that a combination of bromelain, rutosid (a bioflavonoid), and trypsin worked as well as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, which are commonly used pain relievers, for reducing knee pain from osteoarthritis. NSAIDs include ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin), naproxen (Aleve), and diclofenac (Voltaren), among others.

There are studies that show bromelain may reduce swelling, bruising, healing time, and pain after surgery and physical injuries. It is often used to reduce inflammation from with tendinitis, sprains and strains, and other minor muscle injuries. Studies of people having dental, nasal, and foot surgeries found it did reduce inflammation. In Europe, bromelain is used to treat sinus and nasal swelling following ear, nose, and throat surgery or trauma.

TURMERIC EXTRACT IN PROLYT

Turmeric extract (95% curcuminoids) contains three main chemical compounds – curcumin, demethoxycurcumin, and bisdemethoxycurcumin – collectively known as curcuminoids. Curcuminoids have been shown to be Nrf2 transcription factor activators that turn on the production of the body’s own protective enzymes (such as SOD, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase). For more information on the chemopreventive effects of Nrf2 activators see my blog article “Natural Phytochemical Nrf2 Activators for Chemoprevention

All About Turmeric prolyt proteolytic enzymes formula

Studies have reported that curcumin and turmeric protect the liver against several toxicants both in vitro and in vivo. A number of reports showed the chemopreventive action of turmeric and curcuminoids. Curcumin is a potent scavenger of free radicals such as superoxide anion radicals, hydroxyl radicals, and nitrogen dioxide radicals. It exerts powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Curcuminoids have been used effectively in cases of arthritis.

QUERCETIN IN PROLYT

Quercetin (a bioflavonoid and known Nrf2 activator) has been shown to have powerful anti-inflammatory effects, and may be helpful to persons suffering from allergic reactions and from swelling due to injury. Quercetin also is known to reduce viral activity and may be helpful with chronic viral syndromes.

Veggies, nuts, seeds, fruit prolyt proteolytic enzymes formula

A study published in 2010 by Dr. Mark Davis, et. al. suggestes that as little as seven days of quercetin supplementation at 500–1,000 mg/day can increase endurance without exercise training in untrained participants. These benefits of quercetin may have important implications for enhancement of athletic and military performance. This apparent increase in fitness without exercise training may have implications beyond performance enhancement itself to health promotion and disease prevention. Please watch the video to hear Dr. Davis discuss his research on quercetin (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eJ9RUyQdmgs).

GRAPE SEED EXTRACT IN PROLYT

Grape Seed Extract provides a highly bioavailable bioflavonoid complex containing oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPC)  and functions as a powerful Nrf2 activator. OPCs are extremely powerful antioxidants (20 times more powerful than vitamin C in vitro), potent anti-inflammatories, and collagen strengtheners. OPCs readily cross the blood-brain barrier and thereby may be helpful to persons suffering from allergic reactions or from swelling due to injury.

In order to learn more about OPCs, please see my blog article “Review of Scientific Research on Oligomeric Proanthocyanidins (OPC).”

We at HPDI believe Prolyt proteolytic enzymes formula is among the finest digestive enzymes products available today. It is the combination of proteolytic enzymes with bioflavonoids and herbal ingredients exhibiting anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and Nrf2 activation effects that makes Prolyt so effective.

Prescript-Assist™ Broad Spectrum Probiotic & Prebiotic

Fred Liers PhD prescript-assist probiotic prebioticHPDI has always offered high-quality probiotic formulas, such as Polydophilus. We are now very pleased to offer Prescript-Assist™, one of the very best broad spectrum probiotic and prebiotic formulas available.

Probiotics are valued for their capacities to improve health. They boost intestinal health by increasing populations of beneficial bacteria, counterbalance the adverse effects of antibiotics on gut flora, help fight yeast infections, and much more.

Current research shows that increasing population of “good-for-you” bacteria can exert beneficial effects beyond what anyone believed or predicted less than a decade ago. Some of these benefits are truly remarkable and the list of benefits seems to grow every year.

BENEFITS OF PROBIOTIC SUPPLEMENTS & CULTURED FOODS

Benefits reported from probiotics include 1) relief of stress, anxiety, and depression, 2) mood improvement via gut-brain signaling, 3) protection against free radicals, 4) anti-inflammatory properties, 5) improvement of glucose tolerance, 6) reduction of upper respiratory tract infections, 7) allergy prevention, 8) cholesterol reduction, 9) beneficial effects in liver disease, and 10) many other health benefits.

It appears that the range of benefits of probiotics (including probiotic supplements) is so great and that more benefits (and their mechanisms) have yet to be discovered.

Benefits of Probiotics

People recognize that probiotics are found in a variety of foods with live or active bacteria cultures (often found in cultured or fermented foods), which include yogurt, sauerkraut, miso soup, buttermilk, and gouda cheese. Many traditional cultures emphasize the consumption of cultured foods.

Consuming cultured foods is a great way to obtain probiotics naturally from your diet. However, taking a probiotic supplement offers additional benefits beyond the benefits obtained from dietary sources. These benefits can include a wider range and greater number of beneficial bacteria, ease of use, standardized amounts to assess intake, and ensuring high intake of probiotics when dietary sources like cultured foods are not readily available or desirable.

Given the very broad range of benefits relating to use or consumption of probiotics, it is little wonder that they are so widely used, and so commonly recommended. Indeed, we recommend regular use of probiotic for a variety of health-related reasons. Our health recommendations often include the probiotic supplements we offer either as an “enhancement” supplement or sometimes as a “condition specific” formula depending on the health status of the individual and the conditions s/he seeks to address.

While cultured foods are often simply part of a traditional diet, people also consume these foods or take probiotics for specific reasons, such as when their gastrointestinal tract is not functioning well. Other times are when individuals experience GI related symptoms, including abdominal bloating or discomfort, indigestion, nausea, bowel irregularity, flatulence, as well as general malaise, fatigue, or weakness.

Because imbalances in the makeup of healthy bacteria found in the intestines can be the cause of health issues related to the digestive tract, it is important that if an individual decides to take a probiotic supplement that the supplement be of the highest quality and the greatest effectiveness.

INTRODUCING PRESCRIPT-ASSIST™: A BROAD SPECTRUM PROBIOTIC & PREBIOTIC

Not long ago, HPDI decided to make Prescript-Assist™ available to our customers. We did this because we believe Prescript-Assist is hands down one of the best probiotic formulas available. Here are reasons that anyone who takes (or considers taking) probiotic supplements would benefit greatly from taking Prescript-Assist.

29 STRAINS OF SYMBIOTIC MICROFLORA IN ONE PROBIOTIC FORMULA

Prescript-Assist™ is a proprietary, broad spectrum formula providing 29 naturally resilient strains that support your body’s natural intestinal balance. Having so many strains means that this formula better reflects the great microbial diversity of the intestines vs typical probiotic products. In fact, more than 1,000 different species of microbes inhabit the human gut. Also of note: Prescript-Assist™ contains Bacillus subtilis, which is a well-proven probiotic species found in traditional foods.

Most probiotic formulas provide only lactic-acid based bacteria. Lactic-acid bacteria are important, but they are hardly the only or the most important probiotic for humans. They are also quite fragile, and must be refrigerated if they are to remain viable.

Here (below) is a complete list of the strains provided by Prescript-Assist. That is, each 600 mg capsule of Prescript-Assist includes the following microorganisms (and leonardite, a prebiotic):

Arthrobacter agilis, Arthrobacter citreus, Arthrobacter globiformis, Arthrobacter luteus, Arthrobacter simplex, Acinetobacter calcoaceticus, Azotobacter chroococcum, Azotobacter paspali, Azospirillum brasiliense, Azospirillum lipoferum, Bacillus brevis, Bacillus marcerans, Bacillus pumilus, Bacillus polymyxa, Bacillus subtilis, Bacteroides lipolyticum, Bacteriodes succinogenes, Brevibacterium lipolyticum, Brevibacterium stationis, Kurthia zopfii, Myrothecium verrucaria, Pseudomonas calcis, Pseudomonas dentrificans, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Pseudomonas glathei, Phanerochaete chrysosporium, Streptomyces fradiae, Streptomyces cellulosae, Streptomyces griseoflavus.

It is notable that science has discovered that the number of bacterial cells in our bodies is more than ten times the number of human cells. This collection of living cells is essentially an extension of our own bodies, and has been labeled the “human microbiome.”

It is clear that the number and types of species found in the gut can be a primary difference between an optimal digestive system and immune system, and those less than optimally functional. In scientific studies, individuals exhibiting higher levels of gastrointestinal distress and gut irregularities have been found to have a correspondingly lower variety of beneficial bacteria in the intestines.

HIGH VIABILITY

Prescript-Assist™ is a next-generation, clinically proven probiotic supplement designed to to ensure maximum viability of the many organisms it provides. The formula offers inherent viability because the species it provides naturally adapted for survival in the human GI tract. That is, these 29 species are environmentally based (SBO) species drawn from the terrestrial microbiome where they have prospered and adapted for millenia to beneficially coexist with humans.

This inherent viability avoids the need for nano-encapsulation or hard-shelled enteric-coated capsules, which both are essentially attempts to force viability of probiotic species rather than utilizing hardy strains that are naturally pre-adapted to our bodies.

Thus, typical probiotic formulas contain low viability lactic acid bacteria that must be protected by technologies such as micro-encapsulation due to their inherent fragility. These fragile bacteria have a difficult time surviving because they are readily destroyed within the acidic environment of the stomach. While patented enteric coatings can help survival rates, the provision of high-viabiltiy organisms that reach the intestines intact due to the inherent strength of their natural spore structure makes more sense as a means to protect against degradation in the stomach and intestinal tract.

Bottom line: Prescript-Assist™ provides bacteria that reach the intestines intact due to the fact that the spore structure protects against degradation or destruction by stomach acids.

SHELF STABILITY (NO REFRIGERATION NEEDED)

Prescript-Assist offers unparalleled shelf stability. It is well known that conventional probiotics (i.e., lactic acid bacteria) are readily damaged, degraded, and destroyed by the heat and pressure of the manufacturing process. They are also degraded by exposure to light and by temperature changes. Because they lack shelf stability, if they are not kept refrigerated, they often cannot provide a sufficient quantity of organisms by the time of ingestion.

In contrast, Prescript-Assist features probiotic bacteria protected by a durable seed-like structure, so that they are better safeguarded against environmental factors, including heat, pressure, light, or temperature variability. Indeed, testing confirms that the probiotic bacteria in Prescript-Assist remain 95% viable two years after their date of manufacture without any need for refrigeration.

PREBIOTIC SUPPORT

Most probiotic formulas do not contain any prebiotics, which are a food source for bacteria, and help accelerate their growth. Prescript-Assist uniquely contains leonardite, which is a prebiotic mixture of humic and fulvic acids, which allows the beneficial bacteria to proliferate and thrive.

SOUND SCIENCE

Probiotic supplement formulas typically do not offer product-specific clinical studies validating their effectiveness. Prescript-Assist™ is different. It is supported by a peer-reviewed, placebo-controlled human clinical trial, and a one-year follow-up study that verifies its long-term efficacy.

Below is a summary of major features and benefits provided by Prescript-Assist™.

Why is Prescript-Assist a better choice?

  • No Need for Refrigeration.
  • Backed by Sound Science: Supported by peer-reviewed, published clinical studies.
  • Inherent Organism Viability: A matrix of superior, highly resilient microflora whose organic, seed-like structures survive the early GI tract to thrive in the intestines.

CARBOHYDROLYTIC ENZYMES

Amylase, Glucoamylase, Malt Distase, Lactase, Invertase, Alpha-Galactosidase, Cellulase and Cerecalase™

Starch is abundant in the natural world where it serves as the primary energy source for plants, animals and humans. Starch consists of glucose polymers. These polymers exist in two basic compositions, amylose and amylopectin. Amylose, the minor constituent, consists of straight chains of glucose joined with alpha-1,4-glucosidic bonds. Amylopectin consists of branched glucose chains. The branching of the glucose chain occurs with the formation of an alpha-1,6-glucosidic bond. The ratio of amylose to amylopectin varies dependent upon the origin of the starch but is typically in the range of 1:3 to 1:4.

Starch digestion is optimized with the combination of the enzymes alpha-amylase, glucoamylase and malt diastase. While alpha-amylase breaks glucose-glucose bonds at random points within the starch chain, malt diastase hydrolyzes the starch chain from the ends to create glucose dimers (maltose) and glucoamylase breaks single glucose molecules off the ends of the chain. The hydrolytic action of both alpha-amylase and malt diastase is blocked by the alpha-1,6-glucosidic bonds of amylopectin.

The conformation of these limit dextrins prevents the active site of the enzymes from coming in contact with the glucose-glucose bonds thus inhibiting hydrolysis. Glucoamylase hydrolyzes the alpha-1,6-glucosidic bond, freeing the chain for continued hydrolysis of the alpha-1,4-bonds. The action of these three enzymes are outlined in the following three figures which clearly show the benefit of combining amylase, malt diastase and glucoamylase for the liberation of glucose.

FIGURE 1. Action of Amylase (/) without the presence of Glucoamylase for the hydrolysis of amylopectin (component of starch).

The ratio of amylase and glucoamylase activities is relatively standardized with the data for the development of the ratios being derived from the sugar industry.

The amount of lactase in the product is low in comparison to the original Lactaid® formulation. Individuals who do not have dairy problems are not paying for an expensive enzyme with little direct benefit to them. However, those who are lactose intolerant can increase their dosage with dairy consumption to help prevent their symptoms. In comparison to most other products on the market positioned as general digestive supplements, the proposed product is similar in lactase activity.

In regards to alpha-galactosidase, this enzyme is characterized by its ability to hydrolyze the alpha-1-6 linkages in melibiose, raffinose, and stachyose, sugars commonly found in vegetables especially of the legume and cruciferous families. Taken as a supplement, alpha-galactosidase decreases the incidence of flatulence associated with the consumption of raffinose-containing vegetables. The level of invertase in Digase™ is comparable to other general digestive products.

Cellulase and CereCalase™ enzymes offer distinct advantages for individuals consuming large amounts of grains, beans and other vegetable feedstuffs. These enzymes hydrolyze the bonds in various fibers. Cellulase hydrolyzes glucose-glucose bonds in cellulose. By disrupting the structure of the fiber matrices which envelop most of the nutrients in plants, cellulase increases the nutritional value of fruits and vegetables.

CereCalase™ is a proprietary blend of three enzymes—hemicellulase, beta-glucanase and phytase—that work together to macerate, or disrupt, the cell walls of fruits, vegetables, seeds and herbs. These three enzymes hydrolyze non-starch polysaccharides (NSPs) which can have anti-nutritive effects. NSPs have also been shown to bind digestive enzymes and inhibit mineral absorption.
PROTEOLYTIC ENZYMES

PROTEASE 3.0, PROTEASE 4.5, PROTEASE 6.0 and PEPTIDASE

The complexity of proteins and peptides requires the combination of multiple proteases to optimize digestion. Proteins are made up of over twenty different amino acids with each combination presenting different conformational characteristics. Each proteolytic enzyme has different bond specificities and thus a combination shows the greatest rate of hydrolysis. Bond specificity is an ongoing area of research in enzymology. However little has been done on the various Aspergillus proteases.

Peptidase breaks amino acids off the ends of the peptide chain. Our supplier’s (National Enzyme Company (NEC)) peptidase possesses both amino-peptidase and carboxy-peptidase activities and thereby can remove amino acids from both ends of the peptide chain. Protease 4.5 and Protease 3.0 break at points within the peptide chain dependent upon their bond specificities. While these specificities have not been fully elucidated, significant differences in the action of these enzymes have been seen both in the laboratory and in digestive product usage.

The pH optima and ranges of these two enzymes is also an important benefit of combining these proteases. Protease 4.5 has an optimal pH of 4.5 (pH range 2.0 to 6.0) while Protease 3.0’s optimum is pH 3.0 (pH range 2.0 to 7.0) and Protease 6.0 has an optimal pH of 6.0 (pH range 4.0 to 11.0). Together these proteases provide proteolytic action throughout the human digestive system.
LIPOLYTIC ENZYMES

LIPASE

The lipase included in Digase™ has a very broad range activity and is capable of hydrolyzing all three triglyceryl bonds yielding free fatty acids and glycerol. Many lipases hydrolyze only the 1- and 3-positions. In contrast, the Aspergillus niger lipase is capable of breaking the bonds at all three positions although the 2-position is hydrolyzed at a slightly slower rate.

In addition, our lipase shows an optimum pH of 5.0 with an active range of pH 3.0 to 9.0. The LU level for this formulation is in the middle to high range of modern digestive formulations and is comparable with the level used in current research.
HERBS

Gentian Root (Gentiana lutea), Ginger Rhizome (Zingiber officinale), and Caraway Seed (Carum carvi)

Three herbs have been incorporated into this formula to support the digestive action of the food enzymes. Gentian Root (Gentiana lutea) is a bitter herb which is recognized worldwide as one of the most effective gastric stimulants. This herb is widely used to improve digestion and stimulate appetite as well as being beneficial for all types of gastrointestinal disorders including dyspepsia, gastritis, heartburn, and nausea. Research shows that the bitter principles found in Gentian stimulate gastric secretions and have choleretic activity; substantiating the herbs effectiveness for digestion.

Ginger Rhizome (Zingiber officinale) is an incredibly active and effective gastrointestinal aid with the following properties: 1) Contains a digestive enzyme whose effectiveness even exceeds that of papain, 2) Stimulates the flow of saliva and increases dramatically the concentration of the digestive enzyme amylase in the saliva, and 3) Activates peristalsis and increases intestinal muscle tone.

Caraway Seed (Carum carvi) further supports healthy digestion. This herb has carminative and antispasmodic activities that help to soothe the stomach and ease digestion. Caraway also benefits this formulation by its action to increase digestion of fats. Like Gentian Root, Caraway Seed has also been shown to stimulate the appetite.

5.0 GENERAL NOTE ON ENZYME POTENCIES

Due to the catalytic nature of enzymes, any amount (no matter how small) will increase the rate of reaction. Larger potencies simply serve to increase the rate to a higher level, at least within the kinetic ability of the enzyme. Since these enzymes are safe and non-toxic, high activity levels are more cost- and marketing-driven than scientifically established. A game of “our potencies are higher than theirs” is currently one of the most common marketing ploys.

The area of greatest concern in enzyme formulation is in achieving the proper balance in the enzyme ratios. Broadening the formulation to contain multiple proteases and carbohydrases is a valid way to improve the activity of any product. The benefits relate to the specificity of each enzyme. Since each enzyme catalyzes reactions at different sites, multiple enzymes can quickly increases the rate of hydrolysis and improve the bioavailability of amino acids, sugars and fatty acids.
