Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula works by coating and adhering to the lining of the intestines. This unique action allows it to absorb fecal plaques and other debris, soften unhealthy deposits, and sweep them away for elimination in the stool. The IRF formula thereby neutralizes and removes hundreds of toxins, including heavy metals like mercury and lead. It draws out many times its weight in material encrusted or trapped in the intestinal lining. It also provides nutrients not only known to nourish the GI tract, but also that promote normal elimination functions.

The easiest way to start using Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula is to put one teaspoon in eight ounces of water. Stir or shake, then drink immediately. You can then add some additional water to the container, stir and drink. You can start at 1/2 teaspoon (or less) if one teaspoon seems like too much. You can gradually work you way up to one tablespoon in 16 ounces of water or juice.

Note: It is important to consume the formula immediately after mixing with water to avoid the formula thickening which makes it difficult to drink. It is also important to consume sufficient water so it can swell and more easily pass through the digestive tract.

HOW INTESTINAL REJUVENTION FORMULA CAN HELP

Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula relieves symptoms of constipation, including gas, bloating, cramps, indigestion, and nausea caused by excessive waste in the bowel. It also soothes the intestinal lining and colon wall, and promotes a well-functioning colon. This means it can contribute to greater health not only through removal of toxins and intestinal blockages, but also by allowing greater absorption of nutrients from food (i.e., after the intestines are cleansed). It also can contribute to achieving normal weight by promoting elimination of old fecal matter (e.g., post-putrefactive deposits), and by helping to establish and maintain normal bowel function.

Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula acts as a wonderful soothing agent for the mucous membrane linings of the entire intestinal tract, especially the colon. This makes it an important formula for individuals experiencing irritable bowel syndrome, spastic colon, colitis, Crohn’s disease, diverticulitis, or any digestive tract condition causing hot, burning, irritated, or bleeding bowels and/or diarrhea. PSYLLIUM HUSK POWDER (organic)

Psyllium seed husks are soluble in water, expanding and becoming mucilaginous when moistened. Psyllium seed husks are indigestible in human beings and are used as a source of dietary fiber. They are used to relieve constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, diverticular disease, and diarrhea. They are also used as a regular dietary supplement to improve and maintain regular gastrointestinal (GI) transit. The inert bulk of the husks helps to provide a constant volume of solid material regardless of other aspects of the diet or any disease condition of the gut. Recent research also shows psyllium seed husks to be promising in lowering cholesterol and controlling diabetes.

APPLE PECTIN

As a dietary fiber, apple pectin is helpful in maintaining good digestive health. Pectin forms a colloidal solution in water and gels when cool. An indigestible, soluble fiber, apple pectin is a general intestinal regulator used in many healing preparations, especially as an anti-diarrheal agent. Researchers at the University of California, Davis (UCD), found that apple pectin acts as an antioxidant against the damaging portion of cholesterol in the blood stream.

It has been established that a diet rich in apple pectin may help protect against certain diseases. Research in Japan shows that apple pectin can act as a chemopreventive agent. Apple pectin helps maintain intestinal balance by cleansing the intestinal tract with its soluble and insoluble fibers. Apple pectin tends to increase acidity in the large intestines and is advocated for those suffering from ulcer or colitis and for regulating blood pressure. Pectin is also effective in causing regressions in and preventing gallstones. There is also evidence that the regular use of apple pectin may lessen the severity of diabetes.

Apple pectin is known to draw radiation from the body. Russian doctors have found apple pectin to be among the most effective means for protecting against radiation when consuming contaminated foods is unavoidable. Pectin, along with vitamins and minerals, eliminates radionuclides ingested from foods. This is especially relevant given recent meltdowns and radiation releases from the nuclear complex in Fukushima, Japan. Radiation from this catastrophe has contaminated (and continues contaminating) food crops across the entire northern hemisphere (and beyond), especially crops grown in North America.

BENTONITE CLAY

Bentonite clay has a large and varied mineral content, including over 50 minerals. Seen under a high powered microscope, bentonite is composed of extremely minute rectangular particles. The wide surfaces are negatively charged and the edges are positively charged. Therefore, its adsorptive power is many thousand times more negative than positive. It has a negative electrical attraction for positively charged particles. In the human body, various toxic poisons are positively charged. The very minuteness of the particles give it a large surface area (about 1,000 square meters per gram) relative to its volume, thereby enabling it to pick up many times its own weight (as high as 40 times) in positively charged particles.

When bentonite clay absorbs water and swells, it stretches open like a highly porous sponge. Toxins (including pathogenic viruses, herbicides, and pesticides) are drawn into these spaces and bound through electrical attraction. The bentonite is eventually eliminated from the body with the toxins bound to its multiple surfaces. Diarrhea can be remedied through the use of bentonite clay because of its capacity to bind stools. Bentonite clay can act immediately to bind irritants in the gastrointestinal tract.

COLD-MILLED FLAX SEEDS (organically grown)

Flax Seeds (Linum usitatissimum L.) contain essential fatty acids (an excellent vegetarian source of omega-3 alpha-linolenic acid), protein, soluble fiber, insoluble fiber, antioxidant lignans, minerals, and vitamins. Lignans are a phytoestrogens considered to be antioxidants. Flax seeds contain among the highest levels of lignans among all plant foods.

The unique properties of Heartland’s RCM™ Flax (Real Cold Milled) organic flaxseed provides enormous advantages over whole flax seeds, ground flax powders, and other milled flax seed products. In particular, cold-milled flax seeds offer readily assimilable omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids because of special no-heat processing that protects these delicate oils and makes them available for uptake into the body.

RCM™ Flax cold-milled flaxseed is processed using a unique, proprietary method that preserves the delicate oils and allows for optimal uptake of the oils and other nutrients (e.g., soluble fiber) into the body. That is, flax seeds must be milled into a flour or meal to obtain maximum benefits from its oils and dietary fiber. However, typical methods of grinding or pounding flaxseeds separate the oil from the seeds (and heat the oils), thereby causing the oils to oxidize and become rancid. In contrast, cold milling is a unique process that does not involve heating delicate oils and keeps them protected within finely milled pieces of seed. Thus, cold-milled flax seed is not significantly oxidized and remains fresh for an extended period of time. Conversely, when flax seeds are harshly ground or crushed, the oils do not remain fresh because there is no inherent protection from oxidation. Cold milling allows the seed to retain and protect its oils because the process does not release the oils from the seeds.

RCM™ Flax offers a non-refrigerated shelf life of greater than 24 months. A study conducted at North Dakota State University confirms that peroxide levels of RCM™ Flax remain exceptionally low for an extended periods. While this flaxseed retains its freshness for an extended period, when refrigerated (or consumed within several months), it provides amazingly high levels of freshness.

The organic cold-milled flax seeds in Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula contain oil amounts varying between 38–45%, with the oil offering a high percentage (47–53%) of the omega-3 alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) and 15–18% omega-6 linoleic acid. Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) is an essential fatty acid acting in the human body as a substratum for the transformation into EPA and DHA through the action of desaturation and elongation enzymes. The seeds also contain some omega-6 essential fatty acids and exhibit a favorable omega-3 to omega-6 ratio of 3:1. Modern diets contain too few omega-3 fatty acids.

Cold-milled flax seeds possess 15–30% protein (typically 20%) and the amino acids of flax protein have no limiting factors in the adult diet (i.e., they are a complete protein source having all of the essential amino acids in an appropriate balance). Flax seeds are also a source of magnesium, calcium, potassium, phosphorus, zinc, and copper. They also have demonstrated antioxidant activity. The most important antioxidants they provide are phytoestrogens known as lignans. Because cold milling flax seeds significantly reduces oxidation, this exceptional flax seed has great potential within the food industry when compared to other alpha-linolenic acid sources, such as typical ground flaxseed powders, which can exhibit rapid decomposition due to a lack of antioxidant protection from oxidation.

The human body easily digests flax seeds. The seed’s outer layer is rich in mucilloid soluble fiber (flax seed possesses 10-15% soluble fiber) and absorbs at least 4 times its weight in water. When mixed with water or stomach juices, the seeds form a gel that creates a physical barrier between the carbohydrates and the digestive enzymes that break them down. The carbohydrates thereby are digested and converted into glucose (blood sugar) at a slow, uniform rate. There is no insulin surge or spike needed to lower the blood sugar level. The water-retaining capacity of the gel also maintains bodily hydration (i.e., helping level out water intake) and electrolyte balance.

MARSHMALLOW ROOT POWDER (organic)

Considered the king of mucilaginous (gel-like) slippery plants, marshmallow offers a unique composition of about 37% starch, 11% mucilage, and 11% pectin (including flavonoids and phenolic acids). When it reaches the colon, marshmallow gel will soften hardened fecal plaques and help to remove them from colon walls. It also acts as a soothing coating and internal moisturizer for the entire digestive tract. Like chia seeds, it neutralizes irritants often found in the intestinal system, and thereby greatly relieves irritation to the mucous membrane lining of the digestive tract.

SLIPPERY ELM BARK POWDER (organic)

The health benefits of slippery elm are rooted mainly in its soothing properties. This mucilaginous herb is effective when used internally for coating and soothing mucous membranes while also absorbing toxins that can cause intestinal imbalances. Slippery elm is an effective remedy for duodenal ulcers, gastritis, diarrhea, colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, hemorrhoids, and heartburn. The benefits of slippery elm also extend to being a simple food. As part of a normal diet, the inner bark of slippery elm can be ground and eaten as porridge. This porridge is extremely nutritious and high in antioxidants having a consistency and taste similar to oatmeal. It is also a wholesome and sustaining food for infants and invalids.

ACTIVATED WILLOW CHARCOAL (wildcrafted)

Activated charcoal is charcoal that has been treated with oxygen to open up millions of tiny pores between the carbon atoms. The use of special manufacturing techniques results in highly porous charcoals that have surface areas of 300–2,000 square meters per gram. Charcoal works to trap toxins through “adsorption.” When a material adsorbs something, it attaches to it via chemical attraction. The huge surface area of activated charcoal gives it countless bonding sites for adsorbing toxins.

When certain chemicals pass next to the carbon surface, they attach to the surface and become trapped. Activated charcoal is excellent for trapping carbon-based substances (i.e., organic chemicals), as well as other chemicals such as chlorine. It is known to trap over 20,000 organic chemicals. Many chemicals are not attracted to carbon (sodium, nitrates, etc.) so they pass through charcoal. Because charcoal is not “digested” like food, it may remain inside the GI tract for a time, thereby continuing to actively remove toxins via the bowel.

SPIRULINA PACIFICA

Research has shown that spirulina promotes digestion and bowel function. It suppresses bad bacteria (including E. coli and Candida albicans yeast) and stimulates beneficial flora, including lactobacillus and bifidobacteria. Healthy intestinal flora (i.e., “good” bacteria) are a foundation for good health. They increase absorption of nutrients from foods and help protect against infection. In Japan, researchers found that spirulina significantly reduces kidney toxicity caused by mercury and three pharmaceutical drugs. This suggests benefits for humans suffering heavy metal poisoning. Additional research found that rats consuming spirulina or chlorella algae eliminated seven times the amount of dioxin (a highly toxic chemical) when compared to a control diet.

INULIN / FRUCTOOLIGOSACCHARIDES (from Chicory Root)

Like other types of dietary fiber, inulin also has the benefits of enhancing digestive and intestinal functions, reducing cholesterol, and preventing disease. In addition, inulin has one other major health benefit: it is a prebiotic that feeds the healthy microflora that boost your immunity. Not only does inulin actively promote the growth of existing strains of probiotics in your colon, but it also encourages implantation, survival, and growth of freshly consumed probiotics. By boosting the survival and growth of beneficial probiotics in the inner ecosystem, inulin improves digestion, immunity, and disease-fighting capacity of the body.

GINGER ROOT POWDER (organic)

Ginger rhizome (Zingiber officinale) is an incredibly active and effective gastrointestinal aid with the following properties: 1) Contains a digestive enzyme whose effectiveness even exceeds that of papain; 2) Stimulates the flow of saliva and increases the concentration of the digestive enzyme amylase in the saliva; and 3) Activates peristalsis and increases intestinal muscle tone. Ginger is also known to be helpful in cases of nausea.

BIOVIN® GRAPE EXTRACT

BIOVIN® Grape Pulp, Skin & Seed Extract (>85% OPCs): The BioVin® grape extract in REJUVENATE!™ BERRIES & HERBS is extracted by ethanol and water and contains the highest percentage of OPCs (oligomeric proanthocyanidins) of any product on the market. OPCs, a class of bioflavonoids, are one of nature’s most powerful free-radical scavengers. As bioflavonoids, OPCs help to increase the effectiveness of Vitamin C. OPCs cross the blood-brain barrier to provide antioxidant protection to central nervous system tissue. Studies have clearly demonstrated that OPCs improve and normalize capillary activity, strengthening capillary walls. OPCs bind to collagen fibers, realigning them in the process to a more youthful, undamaged structure. Elasticity, flexibility, and strength are thereby restored to connective tissue.

LICORICE ROOT POWDER (organic)

Licorice root soothes the GI tract and aids intestinal health. Licorice root is used effectively in those individuals suffering from peptic ulcer and chronic gastritis. It is used to soothe coughs and reduce inflammation, soothe and heal ulcers and stomach inflammation, control blood sugar, and to balance hormones. Licorice is a potent antiviral agent and can be used to treat flu, herpes, and even hepatitis. Licorice is also a strong anti-inflammatory agent.

MAGNESIUM (from magnesium ascorbate)

Magnesium is important for the metabolism of many biologically active nutrients and substances, including calcium, potassium, phosphorus, zinc, copper, sodium, lead, cadmium, hydrochloric acid (HCl), acetylcholine, and nitric oxide (NO). It is required for more than 325 magnesium-dependent enzymes, cellular homeostasis, and activation of the B vitamin thiamin. It mediates the functions of the nervous and endocrine systems, supports proper muscle and nerve function, stabilizes heart rhythm, helps to regulate blood sugar levels, and supports normal blood pressure. Magnesium is important in energy metabolism and the synthesis of proteins.

CHLORELLA GROWTH FACTOR (CGF)

Chlorella Growth Factor (CGF) stimulates lactobaccilus (the “good” bacteria) to grow at four times the usual rate. Experiments with microorganisms, young animals, and children have demonstrated that CGF promotes faster than normal growth. In adults and mature organisms, CGF appears to enhance the functions of nucleic acids at the cellular level that relate to the production of proteins, enzymes, and energy. It also stimulates tissue repair and offers protection against toxic substances at the cellular level.

VITAMIN C (from magnesium ascorbate)

Vitamin C is known to perform many critical functions within the body involving detoxification, tissue building, immune enhancement, pain control, and controlling or killing pathogenic organisms. It is known to be helpful for wound and bone healing, healthy skin and eyes, infections, stress control, toxic exposure, and repairing damaged tissue of all types.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Additional Ingredients: Natural Lemon Flavor, Malic Acid, and Stevia Leaf Extract. These natural flavors and taste enhancers give the formula a pleasing taste and make it easier for individuals to consume.

DIRECTIONS: For long-term, gentle rejuvenation of the intestinal tract take about one (1) teaspoon (about 1/3 scoop) several times daily away from food (by at least 20 minutes), or as directed by a health care professional. Place the powder in about 8 ounces of water, thoroughly mix (shake or stir), and drink immediately (before the formula becomes a gel too thick to easily consume).

For a more rapid healing cleanse take one tablespoon (one scoop) multiple times daily away from food (by at least 45 minutes). Add the powder to about 16 ounces of water, mix vigorously, and drink.

We recommend using a suitable container (such as a mason jar) for rapid mixing. Stir rapidly or shake vigorously (with lid attached).

Individuals suffering from conditions of severe diarrhea and loose stools can take one tablespoon (or more) multiple times daily (five times or more) and refrain from food. Put the powder in about 16 ounces of water per tablespoon, thoroughly mix, and drink immediately. In between servings it may be helpful to take a multiple strain lactic acid bacteria formula (i.e., a soil based probiotic/synbiotic such as Prescript-Assist). Place the formula directly in your mouth, chew, and then swallow.

While results can be obtained rapidly using this formula, it is most effective when used for longer-term gentle cleansing. Starting with lower doses and gradually increasing dosage often produces best results. This allows the body time to adjust to increased dosages (size and frequency) and facilitates greater therapeutic action from usage.

Note: Taking large amounts without sufficient liquid (e.g., water) or when first taking the formula can slow bowel transit time. Therefore, most individuals will benefit from starting at lower dosage levels and ensuring adequate fluid intake when consuming the formula.

External Applications: Make paste by mixing powder with water. Apply directly to skin or affected areas (e.g., stings, bites, wounds). Wrap with gauze, plastic, etc., and keep poultice moist. Use for up to six hours. Apply fresh poultice as needed.

Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula does not contain wheat, gluten, rye, oats, corn, barley, soy, yeast, egg, sugar, dairy products, GMOs, wax, animal fats, preservatives, colorings, or artificial flavorings.

USING HPDI FOUNDATIONAL SUPPLEMENTS

We define foundational supplements as basic or “core” supplements that should be part of everyone’s daily regimen. They are the foundation of a complete nutritional supplement program.

HPDI has a three-tiered system of nutritional supplements: 1) Foundational Supplements, 2) Enhancement Formulas, and 3) Specific-Condition Formulas. All three tiers comprise a complete nutritional supplement program.

When properly combined, these three tiers of nutritional supplements help create optimal health. This month, I explain how to use HPDI foundational supplements, the base or bottom tier of the system (see cone diagram below).

The HPDI supplement system can be visualized as a cone having a base of Foundational Supplements ascending toward an apex of Enhancement Formulas and Specific Condition Formulas.

USING HPDI FOUNDATIONAL SUPPLEMENTS

My intent is to guide consumers and health care professionals to decide the foundational supplements that are best for their purposes, and that provide the most effective results.

For anyone new to HPDI’s Foundational Supplements system, we recommend six basic types of supplements. The six categories are: 1) multivitamin formulas, 2) vitamin C / antioxidant formulas, 3) essential fats, 4) high-RNA foods (Rejuvenate! superfoods), 5) gut health formulas, and 6) hydrogen formulas.

We established the original three types of foundational supplements about 1988. We have always suggested that clients and health professionals take and/or recommend multivitamins, vitamin C and antioxidants, and essential fats.

About 10 years ago, we added high-RNA foods (like Rejuvenate! superfoods) as a fourth type of foundational supplement because research indicates dietary nucleic acids are essential nutrients—see our blog articles on nucleic acids, Benjamin S. Frank, MD, PhD, and about Rejuvenate! superfoods (Original, Plus, and Berries & Herbs).

Two categories of foundational supplements are new: gut health formulas and hydrogen formulas. Hank wrote an article (Amending the HPDI Foundational Program) about these changes in April. We added these two categories after much consideration regarding their benefits, and have written extensively about them in this blog (see resources section below).

I use all six types of HPDI foundational supplements. I take the following supplements (below) and present them here as an example of how they can be integrated into a complete supplement regimen. Foundational Supplements I take:

1. Multivitamin: Hank & Brian’s Mighty Multi-Vite! (4 per day in divided doses)

2. Vitamin C / antioxidants: PRO-C (6-8 per day) and Ultimate Protector Nrf2 activator (8-12 per day)

3. Essential Fats: Essential Fats Plus E (4 per day)

4. Rejuvenate!™ superfood: All three Rejuvenate! superfoods (2-8 scoops per day)

5. Gut Health: RESTORE For Gut Health (1-2 ounces per day) and Terraflora™ synbiotic (with soil-based organisms) (1-3 per week)

6. Hydrogen: Megahydrate (2-6 per day)

Taking one supplement from each of the six foundational supplement categories builds, supports, and maintains optimal health.

We at HPDI recommend everyone take one of each type of foundational supplement. That is, we suggest an individual select for personal use a multivitamin, vitamin C/antioxidant formula, essential fats formula, Rejuvenate!™ superfood (or other high-RNA superfood), hydrogen product, and at least one gut health product (depending on their gut-health needs).

Similarly we suggest health care professionals recommend for their clients one of each of the six types of foundational supplements.

The other two categories in the HPDI nutritional supplement system are Enhancement Formulas and Specific-Condition Formulas (see cone diagram). These are not foundational supplements. However, I include the supplements I take in these categories for the sake of completeness, as well as to show how Enhancement and Specific-Condition Formulas integrate with Foundational Supplements to form a complete supplement program providing a wide-range of essential nutrients required for health.

Enhancement Formulas I take include: B-Complex-50 (B complex), Myo-Mag (magnesium/malic acid), Ubiquinol-50, Bone Guardian, and Vitamin D3 Plus.

Specific Condition Formulas I take include: Joint Health Formula, Allergy Support Formula, Eye & Vision Formula, Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula, and Warrior Mist (pain topical), and Warrior Sleep (sleep topical).

While I take supplements from all three categories (Foundationals, Enhancements, and Specific-Condition) in the HPDI supplement system, I always prioritize foundational supplements—I take them first—because they are base on which my personal supplement program rests.

Foundational supplements should be the base on which your supplement program—or those of your clients—rests, as well.

FOUNDATIONAL SUPPLEMENTS: RESULTS

Individuals who take all types of foundational supplements do best in terms of optimizing health. The reason is that all six types provide nutrients required for good health.

I can attest that HPDI Foundational Supplements are effective for improving or maintaining good health. In addition, I have witnessed numerous instances where individuals benefit most greatly when taking all four–and now all six–types of foundational supplements.

Each of the six categories of foundational supplement provide unique benefits. Yet, each performs functions required by the human body for good health. That is one reason when they are combined they exert synergistic effects for health going far beyond the benefits of using, one, two, or three of the types of foundational supplements.

WHEN FOUNDATIONAL SUPPLEMENTS ARE NOT PRIORITIZED

I talk to people who may or may not take a multivitamin. And they may or may not take vitamin C. Yet, they may take calcium for their bones, glucosamine for their joints, and lutein for their eyes. Or they may take a low-potency, off-the-shelf multivitamin providing merely the RDA for all nutrients.

There is nothing wrong with individuals taking supplements they regard as important or useful. But that cannot guarantee that a wide range—and sufficient levels—of nutrients necessary for health are available to the body on a regular basis.

In fact, I regard the supplement intake programs of most persons to be “hit-or-miss.” They may consume nutrients important for a few functions in the body, yet fail to obtain other essential nutrients required for the nutrients they take to work most effectively. We have written extensively on this topic on our website and in blog articles (see below).

Not taking regularly a complete set of foundational supplements likely means key nutrients (and key levels of nutrients) go missing. Over time, this means fewer and lower levels of nutrients available to support the body’s needs for them at levels known to sustain the good health.

The best way to ensure a sufficient range of nutrients at plentiful levels is to take foundational supplements. After a baseline of nutrients is established by taking foundational supplements, additional supplements can be added, as necessary.

A COMPLETE SYSTEM OF SUPPLEMENTS, INCLUDING FOUNDATIONALS

After obtaining sufficient levels of basic nutrients required for health, then a person can add (or you can recommend) specific nutrients or formulas that target certain problems or issues. This is the basis for HPDI development of Enhancement Formulas and Specific-Condition Formulas.

Nutritional supplements in the categories of Enhancement Formulas and Specific-Condition Formulas therefore “stack” on top of HPDI’s Foundational Supplements (see cone diagram above). In this way, a complete nutritional supplement program begins with the most essential nutrients and continues with customizations based on the unique needs of an individual.

ENHANCEMENT FORMULAS

Enhancement Formulas in the HPDI system are supplements we regard as falling into the next tier in terms of importance, at least for most people. They do not necessarily provide essential nutrients, and yet many people (including myself) benefit significantly from them.

We frequently get questions from HPDI clients and resellers regarding foundational supplements. These questions include:

“Why did you add gut health and hydrogen products to your foundational supplements program?”
We found it necessary to add categories for gut health and hydrogen because they provide nutrients that are support the body and help ensure the foundational supplement system supports health most effectively. You can read more in previous blog articles (see below).

“Which is the better multivitamin: Multi Two or Mighty Multi-Vite!™?”
It depends on whether you need more B vitamins or antioxidants. Multi Two provides more B vitamins and Mighty Multi-Vite™ provides more antioxidants and cofactors. I take a separate HPDI B-Complex-50 formula, so I take Mighty Multi-Vite!™ as my primary multivitamin.

“What are the differences between Rejuvenate!™ Original, PLUS, and Berries & Herbs superfoods?”
They each provide about 340 mg of dietary nucleic acids. Original is the “greenest” with a large percentage of dietary nucleic acids coming from chlorella and spirunlina. PLUS is our most popular and 30% is identical to Original with more protein and a built-in multivitamin complex. “Should I take a vitamin C formula with antioxidants like PRO-C or one with Nrf2 activators like Ultimate Protector?”
Both provide vitamin C and Nrf2 activators, but Ultimate Protector provides more types of Nrf2 activators. Ultimate Protector capsules are smaller than PRO-C capsules, so a daily dose may require taking more capsules.

“How important are hydrogen supplements?”
Very important for energy production, recovery, antioxidant functions, and gut health. Hydrogen supplements like Active H2 and Megahydrate ensure high levels of hydrogen are available in the body.

What are your best products for supporting gut health?

Q. How Much Protein is in Rejuvenate! Plus and What are the Sources?

Rejuvenate! PlusA. The protein (11.7 gm total per serving) profile in Rejuvenate! Plus is 30% rice protein (organic & non-GMO), 16% vegetable sprouts/pea protein (organic), 11% hemp protein (organic), 11% protein from chlorella, 9% protein from alfalfa grass, 7% from spirulina (Hawaii Pacifica), 6% from flax seeds (organic), 3% from nutritional yeast, and the rest from miscellaneous other ingredients. This is a beautiful blend of a large number of healthy protein sources!!

The rice protein we do use amounts to 5.0 gm per 31 gram serving and is a blend of 80% Orzatein (organic) from China and 47.5% non-gmo grown in California. The net amount of the 80% orzatein (organic) from China in the product is 3.3 grams (a small amount!). Please be advised that we routinely test Rejuvenate! Plus for heavy metals and have never seen significant amounts of any heavy metals.

Personally, four members of my family including me take 1 or 2 servings of Rejuvenate! Plus daily and have done so for many years with excellent results. We are very particular about the foods we put in our body!!

Q. What are the Sources of Enzymes, Soy, and Vitamin D3 in Rejuvenate! Plus?

A. The enzymes are plant based. Protease Enzymes from Aspergillus oryzae ferment. Cellulase Enzymes from Trichoderma oryzae ferment. Alpha-Galactosidase enzymes from Aspergillus niger ferment. CereCalase enzymes (contains hemicellulase, beta-glucanase & phytase) from Aspergillus niger ferment.

The product contains d-alpha tocopheryl succinate. This ingredient is characterized as “soy-antigen free” because of the way it is processed. PCR testing reveals no soy protein even though it originally comes from soy. High-gamma mixed tocopherols is characterized as “soy-antigen free” because of the way it is processed. PCR testing reveals no soy protein even though it originally comes from soy.

The Vitamin D3 is extracted from lanolin. Lanolin is extracted from wool (sheep).

Q. What Form of Vitamin B3 is in Rejuvenate! Plus and will It Cause Flushing?

A. There is 40 mg of the B3 in Rejuvenate! Plus as niacinamide. This form of B3 will not cause flushing.

Q. What Part of the Aloe Vera Plant is in Your Rejuvenate Plus Product?

A. Rejuvenate! Plus contains Organic ActivAloe® 200:1 from gel that is made into a powder.

Q. Do Your Rejuvenate! Products Contain Any Nut or Soy Allergens?

Rejuveante OriginalA. I checked with the manufacturer and was assured that there is no soy or nut allergens in the Rejuvenate, Rejuvenate Plus, or Rejuvenate Berries & Herbs products.

Q. How Do You Make Rejuvenate! Original Lemonade?

A. Rejuvenate! Original lemonade consists of one scoop of Rejuvenate! Original, 2–3 tablespoons of organic lemon juice (fresh or Santa Cruz brand), and 2–3 tablespoons of organic grade B maple syrup. Put these ingredients in a one-quart glass Mason jar and fill with purified water (and maybe some ice made from purified water). Some people like to add a bit of cayenne. This is a great summertime drink!

Q. How Much Rice Bran Oil is in Complete E?

A. There is approximately 250 mg of rice bran oils per capsule in addition to the Vitamin E. The profile of fatty acids is approximately 38% monounsaturated, 37% polyunsaturated, and 25% saturated fatty acids. This amounts to about 100 mg of polyunsaturated fatty acids per capsule. Very little, but useful!

Q. I Want to Know More About the Black Soybean Hull Extract in Ultimate Protector.

up-product-includesA. Black soybean hull extract contains a high percentage of polyphenols (greater than 60% and as high as 100%) including 10–45% anthocyanidins, 10–25% catechins, and 40–80% OPC. There is unlikely to be any soy protein or phytoestrogens in the product due to the extraction processes used. (See: http://www.google.com/patents/US8206764).

Q. I Want to know How Much Caffeine is in Ultimate Protector.

A. A study done on CoffeeBerry extract shows a 0.44% caffeine content. Since each capsule contains 45 mg of the extract the amount of caffeine per capsule is about 0.2 mg (or 1.2 mg per serving of 6 capsules). Q. I Want to Know More About the Blue Corn Extract in Ultimate Protector, and if it contains aspergillus mold.

A. Ultimate Protector contains an extract of blue corn optimized for the anthocyanidin content. Due to the extraction process, it is unlikely that the final material contains any aspergillus. Also, since there is only a small amount of blue corn extract in the product (I estimate less than 5 mg per capsule) it is even more unlikely that aspergillus is a problem.

Q. Does the Vitamin C in Ultimate Protector contain Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs)?

A. The process of producing Vitamin C involves using the starting material of d-glucose derived from plant materials such as corn, beets, potatoes, cassava, etc. (See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reichstein_process). Each of these starting materials will contain some protein that could be in part from genetically modified materials. In most cases—especially in the production of USP grade materials that we use in Ultimate Protector™—the protein will be completely removed. As a precaution that no genetically modified protein remains, PCR testing is conducted (See: http://www.nongmoproject.org/product-verification/about-gmo-testing/guidelines/). The Vitamin C we use in Ultimate Protector™ has been tested using this method, and is certified by independent laboratories to contain no GMOs.

Q. Is There Any Vitamin E in Ultimate Protector Product?

A. There is no Vitamin E in Ultimate Protector. The Vitamin C per cap is 250 mg which is 415% of the Vitamin C RDA. Once in the body, the Vitamin C is able to regenerate oxidized Vitamin E to its unoxidized form. The other main ingredients in Ultimate Protector are plant-based antioxidants (external) and other plant-based substances (called Nrf2 activators) that stimulate the body to make it own antioxidants (internal). In this regard, it is a very powerful supplement!

Q. What are the Plant Sources in Ultimate Protector that provide High ORAC5.0 Values?

A. There are six ingredients that provide high ORAC values. Three of these ingredients (AnthoComplete®, VitaBerry® Plus, and VitaVeggie®) are a mixture of extracts from a wide range of fruits and vegetables. Below each of the ingredients are listed along with website/product information:

1) AnthoComplete® from Futureceuticals (http://www.futureceuticals.com/products/anthocomplete™),
2) CoffeeBerry® Forte from Futureceuticals (http://www.futureceuticals.com/products/coffee-fruit),

All of these sources are non-GMO. None of our sources claim organic. This in part may be because they are extracts and as such may have been processed in a manner not considered to be organic. Please consider that this is a nutritional supplement and not a food.

Q. What Form of 5-MTHF Do You Use in Your Products?

A. We use only the Quatrefolic form of folate made by the Italian company Gnosis. See: http://www.quatrefolic.com/4thGeneration.html. This contains only the active non-racemic form of folate and no folic acid. Quatrefolic®, provides the metabolic reduced form utilized and stored in the human body – (6S)-5-methyltetrahydrofolate.

Q. What is the Purity of Fish Liver Oil in Your Vitamin D3 Plus Product?

Vitamin D3 PlusA: I am always careful when formulating any product to minimize any potential toxins. Vitamin D3 and Vitamin A from fish liver oils, as are found in the HPDI Vitamin D3 Plus formula, are highly concentrated sources which means that only milligram amounts are needed. This in itself means that there would be very low levels of toxins. This is verified by testing that shows mercury levels of less than 0.003 ppm, lead levels of less than 0.005 ppm, cadmium levels of less than 0.002 ppm, and arsenic levels of less than 0.004 ppm. By ‘less than’ it means the amounts are below the detection limits. Very low, indeed!

Q. Can the Licorice in Your Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula Cause High Blood Pressure?

irf-product-includesA. The licorice in Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula is from the powdered root of organically grown licorice. Each serving contains 40 mg. It is highly unlikely that this amount of the whole root could cause blood pressure issues.

KIDNEY CLEANSING WITH JUICES & HERBS

Fred Liers PhD kidney cleansing rejuvenation program hpdiKidney cleansing is an important part of maintaining health. It is not difficult to cleanse your kidneys periodically. This supports good kidney health and overall health. It also can prevent bigger problems related to the kidneys from developing into health-threatening issues. Healthy kidneys are essential for vibrant living. Kidneys serve many functions,  including filtering blood. They are organs of elimination and detoxification. As such, taking care of them via kidney cleansing is not unlike changing the oil in your vehicle. Regular maintenance is far easier than the dealing with the consequences of doing nothing to support kidney health.

Kidney cleansing is part of the HPDI Rejuvenation Program. It falls under the category of detoxification, like liver cleansing. I’ve written about liver cleansing in previous articles, e.g., see Liver Cleanse with Juice & Herbs. In fact, kidney cleansing shares much in common with liver cleansing. Yet, the differences are significant.

 KIDNEY CLEANSING BASICS

There are various types of kidney cleanses available. At its simplest, kidney cleansing revolves around consuming lemon or lime juice in water. I’ve written at length on that topic in articles like Rejuvenate! Lemonade  – Delicious & Satisfying and The Summer Lemonade Diet. Drinking lots of freshly made organic lemonade or limeade (with or without superfoods like Rejuvenate! or chlorella) goes far in supporting and maintaining healthy kidneys. But kidney cleansing goes well beyond consuming lemonade.

A complete kidney cleanse usually involves specific herbal kidney teas and tinctures in addition to a citrus drink (i.e., lemonade). Also, there exist more potent protocols for naturally cleansing kidneys when dealing with issues such as kidney stones or other problems specific to kidneys. I’ll address a few of those, too.

How often? I typically perform three to five days of kidney cleansing every four months. That is, about once per season. And that’s almost always in addition to my “normal” consumption of fresh, organic lemonade for health.

Here is a basic lemonade recipe for a kidney-bladder flush:

1. KIDNEY CLEANSING LEMONADE

INGREDIENTS: JUICE OF ONE MEDIUM LEMON AND ONE MEDIUM LIME (OR TWO OF EITHER ONE), 16–32 OUNCES PURE WATER, CAYENNE PEPPER (PINCH), MAPLE SYRUP (OPTIONAL)

Mix these ingredients in a one-quart mason jar or pitcher. Consume the entire drink within a few minutes. Then about fifteen to twenty minutes later, drink two cups of kidney-bladder tea along with one-dropperful of kidney tincture per cup of tea.

You can obtain commercial kidney teas at natural foods stores. One good commercial kidney tea is Yogi Tea’s Peach-Detox Tea. Perhaps my favorite prepared loose tea for kidney cleansing is Dr. Richard Schulze’s K-B Tea (available from American Botanical Pharmacy: www.herbdoc.com). You can also make your own kidney tea with loose herbs you obtain yourself from natural foods stores or herb suppliers like Pacific Botanicals (see resources section below). If you decide to make your own kidney tea, here is a basic recipe:

2. KIDNEY CLEANSING TEA RECIPE

A) UVA URSI AND JUNIPER BERRY (MIX EQUALLY; THIS WILL BE 50% OF YOUR TEA)

B) THE OTHER 50% CONSISTS OF EQUAL PARTS: CORNSILK, PARSLEY ROOT, DANDELION, HORSETAIL, GOLDENROD, HYDRANGEA ROOT, GRAVEL ROOT, MARSHMALLOW

Use one rounded tablespoon (or more) of kidney cleansing tea per sixteen ounces of boiling water for this tea. Pour water over tea and let steep. You can also add fresh carrot tops or watermelon seed and rind at the time you make the tea. Drink two cups of this tea about fifteen minutes after you drink the lemonade drink. Ideally, you will also drink one or two cups of this tea in the early afternoon and early evening. If you require greater stone-dissolving power, you can increase the hydrangea and/or gravel root to as much as 25% of the second part of the tea mixture. Or you can try the four-day stone dissolving program (outlined below).

It’s fine to make one or two servings of kidney cleansing tea at a time. But I typically prefer to make larger amounts and simply re-heat it during the day. For example, I usually place six tablespoons of kidney tea into 60 ounces of water in a steel or glass pot (yielding six cups for the day). I usually do this the night before I plan to make the tea allowing the tea sit in the water overnight.

Then in the morning while I make my lemonade drink, I bring the water to a boil, reduce heat and let simmer for a minute before turning off the heat. 15–20 minutes after consuming the lemonade drink, the kidney cleansing tea has cooled a bit (but remains warm). I drink two cups (16 ounces) of tea at a time. I strain the herbs when making the tea and then add them back into the pot.

At the end of the each day, I add more fresh dried kidney tea and fresh water into the pot (usually six more tablespoons of tea and 60 ounces of water (i.e., one tablespoon of kidney tea per 20 ounces of water) and repeat this process the next day. After three days, I discard all the “used” kidney tea herbs, rinse the pot, and re-start the process with fresh dried kidney tea.

While the combination of lemonade drink and kidney tea is powerful by itself, greater effects are obtained when a kidney tincture is used with the tea either placed directly into it, or consumed separately. I consume approximately one dropperful of tincture per cup of kidney cleansing tea. Kidney tinctures can be found commercially, including the one I like best, Dr. Schulze’s organic K-B tincture.

Here is a basic recipe for a kidney tincture if you decide to make one yourself using organic or wildcrafted herbs from a supplier like Pacific Botanicals:

3. KIDNEY TINCTURE/TONIC RECIPE

A) 50% OF AN EQUAL MIXTURE JUNIPER BERRIES AND UVA URSI LEAF.

B) EQUAL MIXTURE OF CORNSILK, HORSETAIL HERB, AND BURDOCK HERB. (GOLDENROD FLOWER TOPS AND PIPSISSEWA LEAF OPTIONAL)

Place all herbs in a blender with vodka. Blend thoroughly. Place blended mixture into a mason jar. Label it clearly and include the date made. Let sit for at least two weeks, but preferably one month or longer. Then pour into a large bowl using a T-shirt (or cheesecloth) as a filter. Pour the filtered liquid back into the mason jar. Discard the solids. Ideally you would create the tonic on the new moon and strain on a full moon. As noted, use one dropper (35 drops) of kidney tincture per cup of kidney tea. Because ideally you will drink 4–6 cups of kidney tea daily, you will use 4–6 droppers total (one per cup) of kidney tincture.

START KIDNEY CLEANSING

A basic kidney cleansing program (i.e., kidney cleanse) can be as little as five days long. As I mentioned, it can be as simple as drinking a few glasses of freshly made lemonade and a two or three cups of kidney tea daily. However, I find that reserving at least five days for a dedicated kidney cleanse works best. That doesn’t mean you can’t do a Master Cleanse type lemonade diet for a few days or weeks. It just means dedicated kidney cleansing provides complete support for optimal kidney function.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING KIDNEY CLEANSING

Periodic kidney cleansing with vegetable juice and kidney herbs not only cleanses and detoxifies the kidneys, but also the entire body. For example, a kidney cleanses benefits the entire urinary (renal) system, including the bladder and ureters. It will dissolve mineral buildup and is known to dissolve kidney stones of various sizes. The kidneys main job is to filter and cleanse blood. What this means is that kidney cleansing will help your kidneys do their job of filtering blood. This ultimately improves the health of your blood cells, and thereby the health of your entire body.

Kidney cleansing provides many of benefits, including providing a significant amount of hydration to the entire body. This high level of hydration will help support proper fluid and electrolyte balance in your body. One of the most important aspects of proper kidney cleansing with lemonade, herbs, and vegetable juices is that it gives the digestive system a break, and allows for simultaneous rejuvenation of the gastrointestinal and urinary tracts. A program for kidney cleansing can include a subprogram for bowel detoxification, which is considered by many to be a foundational aspect of detoxification. I will provide a complete kidney cleansing program (below) that includes bowel cleansing herbal formulas and routines.

There are additional benefits. Kidney cleansing is a great place to start your efforts toward overall body detoxification (i.e., detoxifications programs) because the skills learned and developed in implementing it are also applicable to liver cleansing (the subject of previous blog articles) and other modes of detoxification.

KIDNEY CLEANSING IS FUN

Another fact to consider. Kidney cleansing is fun!! Okay, it’s serious business when it comes to kidney health. It can transform you health and your life. But fundamentally, you will eventually find yourself in a state of bliss during your cleanse. I always do!! This kidney-cleansing–induced state of bliss not only relates to doing something supremely good for yourself, but more practically, it so amazingly improves your nutritional status, your alkalinity (pH), the health and vibrancy of your kidneys, your brain function, and so much more…that you simply bliss out. That’s a fact for the vast majority of people.

EQUIPMENT NEEDED FOR KIDNEY CLEANSING

There isn’t much equipment you will need, but these items are useful:

• Citrus Juicer (manual) (steel, glass, or ceramic) for juicing lemons and/or limes.

• Citrus Press (e.g., Orange-X) (optional) for faster juicing of lemons and limes, especially for larger amounts.

• Juicer (e.g., centrifugal, twin gear, masticator, single augur, etc.) for vegetable juices.

• Blender or Vitamix (optional) for blender drinks.

• Pot (steel or glass) for boiling hot water for herbal kidney tea.

START YOUR DAY WITH LEMONADE

A kidney cleanse involves consuming the kidney cleansing lemonade drink (see recipe above) in the morning. The lemonade is followed 15–20 minutes later by a hot (or warm) herbal tea containing kidney herbs plus an herbal kidney tincture formula (see recipe above). In addition to the kidney tincture, other useful tinctures include echincea tincture or detoxification herb tincture (see resource section below). You will again consume the tea and kidney tincture several times during the day. That is, drink two cups (16 ounces) of kidney tea 15–20 minutes after the kidney drink, and then drink an additional 1–2 cups twice during the day. Make sure to take a dropperful of kidney tincture per cup either in the tea itself or separately, if you prefer.

Fresh vegetable juices and superfoods are consumed after the lemonade kidney drink, kidney tea, and kidney tinctures. Drink at least 64 ounces (two quarts) of fresh vegetable juice daily in divided doses mixed with superfoods. Consume up to 128 ounces (one gallon) of fresh juice daily.

You can do a kidney cleansing program for as little as three days or for as long as three months (or longer) depending on individual needs. At longer durations, one week of kidney cleansing can be alternated with one week of liver cleansing or bowel cleansing.

After a long period of kidney cleansing (e.g., two or three weeks) it may be desirable to take at least a short break from herbs and tinctures. Continue with fresh vegetable juices and superfoods, and any additional protocols you may decide to follow.

You can initially aim for five to seven days of kidney cleansing. This can include one day of raw foods at the start and another day of raw foods at the end. Thus, a five day kidney cleanse might start with a day of raw foods (plus juices, teas, and tinctures) followed by three days of only juices, teas, and tinctures, and then finish with another day of raw foods (plus juices, teas, and tinctures). This schedule can work for individuals on the job, because it can start on a Thursday and end the following Monday.

NOW START JUICING

After consuming the morning lemonade drink, herbal tea, and tinctures, wait at least 15 minutes before consuming juice and superfoods. As noted, you can drink up to four quarts (one gallon) of juice daily (and two quarts minimum), so don’t hesitate to get started consuming fresh juice. Drink juice as often you like and whenever you feel hungry. Spacing your juice intake during the day may work best to keep up your energy. You may experience lulls in your energy levels. This is normal during kidney cleansing. Fortunately, more caloric energy is available in the form of fresh juice, so drink up!

Many people enjoy their superfoods added directly into their juice. Others prefer to drink superfoods separately in water. Because you will be consuming plenty of fresh juice and pure water, experiment to see what you like best. Superfoods can be very energizing, which also means they work well with vegetable juice to provide energy. You may wish to take most of your superfoods earlier in the day (e.g., between 9 am and 1 pm) in order to avoid over-energizing yourself as the day winds down.

WE RECOMMEND REJUVENATE! SUPERFOODS

We recommend taking Rejuvenate! superfoods during kidney cleansing. I primarily use original Rejuvenate! because it provides the most chlorella, which is highly cleansing and detoxifying for the entire body. All Rejuvenate! superfoods taste good (yet everyone has their favorite). I prefer Rejuvenate! (original greens) for purposes of cleansing and detoxification, but all of them provide therapeutic levels of dietary nucleic acids. Few people get adequate levels of nucleic acids in their diet.

Dr. Benjamin S. Frank asserted that nucleic acids are essential nutrients like vitamins and minerals. I personally feel the difference when I consumer sufficient dietary nucleic acids (about 300 mg daily minimum for me). That’s about the amount of nucleic acids provided by one scoop of Rejuvenate! (any version since they all provide about the same amount per serving). 300 mg (the amount of nucleic acids provided in one scoop of Rejuvenate! original) makes a noticeable difference in my energy level, feelings of well being, and improved appearance.

I recommend taking three to six scoops (or more) daily because the benefit continue to accrue at higher levels. 1,500 mg (the amount of nucleic acids in five scoops of original Rejuvenate!) seems to be an optimal amount to take per day. More than that amount doesn’t appear to give me any additional benefits, but I definitely notice a corresponding decrease in benefits when I consume smaller daily servings.

FOUNDATIONAL SUPPLEMENTS & ENHANCEMENT FORMULAS

I always recommend taking four foundational supplements daily. The four supplements are a high-potency multivitamin (like Mighty Multi-Vite!™), essential fats, antioxidant / vitamin C formula (like Ultimate Protector™ or PRO-C™), and a Rejuvenate! superfood. I have discussed the importance of foundational supplements in other articles, including Rejuvenation Program: Part Four.

During kidney cleansing, simply continue taking your supplements with juice. HPDI also recommends seven enhancement supplements important for building and maintaining optimal health. Enhancement supplements include: CoQ10 (ubiquinone) or ubiquinolMyo-Mag (magnesium & malic acid), Hepa Plus (liver support formula), Nascent Iodine, echinacea, and Immune-Assist. ADDITIONAL IMPORTANT PRACTICES

Other important practices you may wish to include during the remainder of the day after a morning kidney lemonade drink and kidney herbal tea include: 1) bowel cleansing herbs (no need to take a break from these herbs); 2) liquids (other than kidney tea), including herbal teas and pure water (try to drink at least a few quarts in addition to vegetable juices during the day), 3) exercise (preferably one hour) (at the intensity of your choice, but walking and yoga are good, especially for moving lymph fluid), 4) meditation, affirmations, prayer/mantras, deep breathing exercises, journaling, etc. to relax and center the mind.

If there is a particularly affected area of the body that you wish to heal, you may include hydrotherapy (e.g., hot and cold showers), sauna therapy, castor oil packs, or poultices (e.g., a drawing poultice). I have detailed some of these important practices in my articles on the Rejuvenation Program, including supporting protocols for rejuvenation. I won’t go into much detail here, but you can refer back to my series of ten blog articles on the Rejuvenation Program, and to the Rejuvenation Program page itself, which is on our main website.

If there are any practices or protocols that are important to you, then definitely consider adding them into your kidney cleansing routine. I make many suggestions, but you may know (or learn) what works best for you in terms of practices that will make your kidney cleansing experience better. Please include them!!

I won’t go into much detail at this point regarding many important practices that can support successful kidney cleansing. But I will address the beneficial role of parsley, garlic, and watermelon, as well as the topic of bowel cleansing. I have discussed bowel cleansing in previous posts (see Rejuvenation Program: Part Two), but I feel it is particularly valuable during kidney cleansing.

SPECIAL ROUTINES FOR KIDNEY CLEANSING

Beyond the basic kidney cleansing regimen I discuss above, there are several other routines that can boost kidney health. You can find ways to incorporate these routines or practices into the lemonade-based kidney cleanse, but they also work very well on their own. And for individuals who require kidney cleansing beyond the basic lemonade- and kidney herb-based routine, these special routines may be the very ones that make the difference in terms of kidney health.

PARSLEY JUICE

Consuming fresh parsley and drinking parsley tea are great for kidney cleansing. The most therapeutic form of parsley for kidney health is fresh parsley juice. Run it through your juicer. The best juicers for leafy green vegetables are twin gear (like Green Star), masticator (Champion), and single augur (Hurom). Common centrifugal juicers won’t juice parsley quite as well, but if that’s all you have then by all means use it.

Tip: If you’re using a centrifugal juicer for greens, then consider running the fresh pulp through the juicer a second time. This will help maximize the amount of green juice you obtain.

Garlic is another great herb not just for kidneys, but for the entire urinary tract and indeed the whole body. One neat thing I discovered is that if you juice fresh garlic with fresh parsley, then the parsley removes nearly all the garlic smell and taste. I have juiced a huge, spreading parsley plant from the garden along with an entire bulb of garlic. And you’d never know there was any garlic in the juice. Just use good judgement. If you’re just juicing a handful of parsley, then maybe just juice a a clove or two of garlic. Another tip. Put the garlic through the juicer first, and then add the parsley. That way the parsley deodorizes the garlic.

WATERMELON

Consuming watermelon is healthy for kidneys and urinary tract. If you eat one or two medium- to large-sized watermelons in a day, then you will definitely benefit from it. But like all the other foods I’ve talked about, juicing watermelon is really the most therapeutic. This is largely because it is the watermelon rind that provides significant benefits. It is much easier to juice the rind (since most people won’t eat it) right along with the red, meaty parts and the juice still tastes good. The rind also contains bioavailable minerals (like natural sodium) that are beneficial to kidneys.

Also note that watermelon seeds are beneficial for kidneys, so try to eat and juice varieties that are not seedless. Seedless varieties undoubtedly offer benefits, but watermelon seeds–like the rinds–provide uniquely therapeutic substances.

ADDENDUM

FOUR-DAY PROGRAM FOR ELIMINATING KIDNEY STONES

Okay, I’m including a special program for individuals who are already dealing with kidney stones. There are times when the basic lemonade-based regimen is not the most effective place to start kidney cleansing. As I mentioned, kidney cleansing should be simple and easily done routinely (i.e., once every three or four months). But kidney cleansing can’t be routine if you have large numbers of stones. That is, a lemonade-based kidney cleanse has adequate power to dissolve small stones while cleansing kidneys and the entire urinary tract. When there are a significant number of stones already present in the kidneys, it is best to first use an herbal formula specifically for removing stones. Here is a formula for dissolving kidney stones and a four-day program for eliminating them.

4. HERBAL FORMULA FOR DISSOLVING KIDNEY STONES

2 Ounces Hydrangea Root

2 Ounces Gravel Root

1 Ounce Marshmallow Root

DIRECTIONS

Preferably use all organic ingredients. Take a total of five ounces of these combined roots, either cut or powdered. Take two quarts of freshly squeezed apple juice. Place half the herbs (2.5 ounces) into each quart of fresh apple juice. Allow to sit overnight. In the morning bring the mixture to a boil and let simmer for 15 minutes. Let the mixture cool, strain the herbs from one quart of it. Drink the entire quart during the first day consuming about 2.5 ounces each hour. Also make sure to drink an additional two quarts (32 ounces) of water the first day. Let the other quart sit in a cool, dark place and shake it a few times daily. The next morning, strain it. Then drink this (second) quart at one ounce per hour (during the hours that you’re awake) for two days. On the days you should also consume two quarts of water and two quarts of fresh vegetable juice. On the fourth day, you should aim for a juice fast totaling 64 ounces of purified water and 64 ounces of fresh vegetable juices.

During the entire four-day period, you should consume only pure water and freshly made juices (including the strained apple juice with herbs). The idea is to gradually increase fluid intake daily. Thus, note that the first day you drink up to one additional quart of fluids, then two additional quarts on days two and three, and finally up to four quarts on the fourth day. Fasting the entire four days consuming only the fresh juices and purified water produces best results.

If you opt not to fast, then the diet should be totally raw and vegan (100% plant based) consuming only fruits, fruit juices, vegetables, and vegetable juices. Good juices include orange, cranberry, watermelon, and vegetable juice combinations such as carrot, parsley, garlic, and ginger. Also good are purified water with lemon and/or lime juice and and kidney and bladder tea (see above) at the rate of two to six cups daily.

Most people won’t need this four-day program for dissolving stones. That is, the basic kidney-cleansing lemonade program is quite effective on its own. But I feel obligated to include it for individuals who will benefit from it. For these persons (and maybe you’re one of them) dissolving stones is an important first step in the process of kidney cleansing. Once the stones are dissolved, then you can use the lemonade-based kidney cleansing regimen at any time.

I promised (above) to include a complete discussion about bowel cleansing, which is important for detoxification under any circumstances. Bowel cleansing can be performed during kidney cleansing, liver cleansing, or separately all by itself.

BOWEL CLEANSING

A BOWEL CLEANSE IS IDEAL WHILE KIDNEY CLEANSING

Many natural care practitioners say that all cleansing begins with bowel cleansing. I believe they say this partly because their experience shows that just doing a complete bowel cleanse can significantly improve their patients’ health and “cure” many maladies. Certainly, cleansing the bowel before kidney cleansing is a good idea, and will help prepare the body for it. Bowel cleansing itself no doubt is powerful. But when combined with kidney cleansing, bowel cleansing can facilitate the cleansing process, and support processes of detoxification, rejuvenation, and creation of optimal health. So, it is always a good idea to spend at least some time during kidney cleansing to perform a bowel cleanse. It can easily be done simultaneously or separately.

A basic juice flush usually acts to cleanse the bowel. However, the ultimate goal is to facilitate the body’s creation of health by engaging in practices that act synergistically to support the most complete cleanse possible. With respect to bowel cleansing, we recommend several excellent formulas that can be used while kidney cleansing. These formulas include HPDI’s own Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula, which acts to sweep the entire gastrointestinal tract.

INTESTINAL REJUVENATION FORMULA

We recommend you take Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula up to three times daily (away from food or juice) mixed with at least 12–16 ounces of water). Initially, you might just take it once daily at the level of one teaspoon. Eventually, you can work your way up to one teaspoon three times daily. It is important to make sure your bowel works well at the initial levels (1/2 teaspoon to 2 teaspoons) before increasing the dose. The reason for starting at lower levels is that some people can experience constipation (or reduced bowel transit time) initially due to increased fiber. The body eventually adjusts to it, and then the formula will help facilitate bowel action.

HOW IT CLEANSES THE BOWEL

Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula attaches onto materials in the digestive tract, helping to move them through the digestive system for elimination. The formula sweeps away blockages, debris, hard to remove materials, and even helps clear bowel pockets. Shake it vigorously until well mixed, then drink. Then you can add another four ounces of water to the jar and re-shake, then drink again. EFFECTIVE FOR BOWEL SLUGGISHNESS

Individuals with extremely sluggish bowels may require a stronger herbal formula to support movement in the bowel. Okay, I realize I’ve spoken at length about bowel cleansing in an article on kidney cleansing. It’s just that important!! So please consider starting a bowel cleanse before (or during) kidney cleansing because it can make a huge difference in the effectiveness of your kidney program (and detoxification programs in general).

PERIODIC KIDNEY CLEANSING SUPPORTS OPTIMAL HEALTH

Kidney cleansing is among the best ways to improve overall health, boost energy, detoxify the body, and increase quality of life. In fact, I believe it is now essential. Given the state of the average person’s diet, the lack of proper overall nutrition, and especially the amount of toxicity in our environment (including toxicity in food, water, air, soil, and our homes and offices), there is no reason not to perform kidney cleansing regularly. That is, at least once or twice per year, and preferably once every season (spring, winter, fall, and summer).

Kidney cleansing can be an ongoing part of your lifestyle even after a you’ve completed a periodic cleanse. For example, routinely consuming fresh organic lemonade, watermelon, parsley, garlic, vegetable juices, raw foods, and kidney support herbs (e.g., kidney teas containing herbs like juniper berry, uva ursi leaf, and corn silk).

As I’ve suggested, maintaining healthy kidneys can be aided by avoiding toxins. Read Part Two of the Rejuvenation Program series (see resources below). Avoid or reduce your exposure to kidney toxic foods, liquids, and substances. This includes conventional produce (containing pesticides and GMOs) and artificial ingredients (food colorings, flavorings, preservatives, and sweeteners). Avoidance of these substances reduces your toxic load and supports kidney health.

The lemonade-based kidney cleansing program is as tasty and enjoyable as it is effective. I hope you get started on your kidney cleansing program today. And I hope you enjoy the kind of bliss that comes not only from giving your kidneys a break, but also from the improved state of health that cleaner kidneys will immediately begin providing to your entire body. Liver Cleanse with Juices & Herbs

However, the combination of juicing with liver cleansing provides what is probably the most effective means for liver detoxification for health and healing, as well as improved liver function.

Detoxifying the liver is important these days by any measure. Our environment presents our bodies with the job of detoxifying numerous toxins. These toxins accumulate inside the body and damage our health. The liver is our primary organ of detoxification, responsible for more functions than science can describe.

We therefore look to the liver when considering how best to detoxify ourselves. Any actions you take to detoxify your liver will pay you back handsomely in better health. Or at least in a cleaner liver, which equates to more effective liver function, a greater capacity to detoxify, and (ostensibly) a less toxic you.

Performing a liver cleanse regularly (ideally 3–4 times per year, i.e., once per season) not only allows your body to eliminate many of these toxins, but also keeps your liver and other organs of detoxification in good condition, prepared to continue doing their jobs well…and keep you well.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT DURING A LIVER CLEANSE

Periodic liver cleansing with vegetable juice and liver herbs not only cleanses and detoxifies the liver, but also the entire body. For example, a liver cleanse reduces cholesterol, thins blood, removes and reduces plaques in vessels throughout the body (including the brain). In sum, liver cleansing rejuvenates your body entirely from the inside to the outside.

One of the most important aspects of a proper liver cleanse with vegetable juices is that it gives the digestive system a break, and allows for cleansing and rejuvenation of the entire gastrointestinal tract.

A program for liver cleansing can (and should) include a subprogram for bowel detoxification, which is considered by many to be a foundational aspect of detoxification. I will provide a complete liver cleanse program (below) that includes bowel cleansing herbal formulas and routines.

There are additional benefits. A liver cleanse is a good place to start a detoxification program because it the skills learned and developed in implementing it are also applicable to kidney cleansing (the subject of my next blog article) and other forms of cleansing.

A LIVER CLEANSE CAN BE FUN

Another fact to consider. Juice cleansing is FUN! Okay, it’s serious business when it comes to health. It can transform you health and your life. But fundamentally, you will eventually find yourself in a state of bliss during your cleanse. It never fails for me.

This cleanse-induced state of bliss not only relates to doing something incredibly good for yourself, but more practically, it so amazingly boosts and positively affects your nutritional status, your state of alkalinity (pH), the health and vibrancy of your liver, your brain function, and so much more…that you simply bliss out. That’s a fact for the vast majority of people who do it.

HOW TO LIVER CLEANSE WITH JUICE

EQUIPMENT YOU WILL NEED

There isn’t too much equipment you will need, but it is helpful to have a few items:

Blender or hand blender (see Resource section below for recommended brands)
Juicer (e.g., centrifugal, twin gear, masticator, single augur, etc.)
Citrus Press (optional)
Vitamix (optional)
Pot (steel or glass) to boil hot water with herbal tea
Strainer

HOW TO START THE DAY

A liver cleanse involves consuming a liver flush drink (usually in the morning) followed 15–20 minutes later by a hot herbal tea containing liver healthy herbs plus several herbal tincture formulas. The tea and added liver tincture are then consumed again several times thereafter during the day. That is, drink two cups (16 oz) of liver tea 15–20 minutes after the liver flush drink, and then drink an additional 1–2 cups twice during the day. Make sure to include a dropperful of liver tincture per cup.

Fresh vegetable juices and superfoods are consumed after the liver drink, tea, and tinctures. At least 64 ounces (two quarts) of fresh juice should be consumed daily in divided doses mixed with superfoods. Preferably up to 128 ounces (one gallon) or more of fresh juice can be consumed per day.

The program can be done for as little as three days or for as long as three months (or even longer) depending on the needs of the individual. At longer durations, one week of liver cleanse can be alternated with one week of kidney cleanse, or other types of cleanse, including bowel cleansing.

Also, at longer durations, and especially after a week or two each of liver and kidney cleansing, for example, a break from herbs may be desirable. Just continue with juice and superfoods, and any additional protocols you may decide to follow.

A good, initial liver cleanse (or flush) should aim for five to seven days. This can include one day of raw foods at the start and another day of raw foods at the end. Thus, a five day liver cleanse could start with one day of raw foods (plus juices, teas, and tinctures), followed by three days of only juices, teas, and tinctures, and then finish with another day of raw foods (plus juices, teas, and tinctures). This is quite doable, even for individuals who work, because you can begin on a Thursday and end the following Monday.

MORNING LIVER / GALLBLADDER DRINK RECIPE

(Use organic or wildcrafted ingredients whenever possible)

8 ounces citrus juice (orange, grapefruit, and/or lemon/lime)
8 ounces purified water
1 clove garlic (and then add 1 clove per day up to 4–5 cloves)
1 inch ginger
1 tablespoon olive oil (and then add 1 tablespoon per day up to 4–5 tablespoons)

Juice the citrus separately and then place all ingredients into a blender. Blend until smooth. Drink.

Note: citrus juice is best to use in spring and summer. In winter, you can substitute fresh apple and/or grape juice.

Each day beyond the first, add to the drink one more tablespoon of olive oil and one more clove of garlic. Thus, on day two of preparing the liver drink, you use two tablespoons of olive oil and two cloves of garlic. As you can tolerate it, increase the olive oil to 4–5 tablespoons and the garlic to 4–5 cloves (i.e., you will be on day four or five by this point).

I generally do not go beyond five tablespoons of olive oil and five cloves of garlic, even when I prepare the liver drink for seven days. Also, feel free to increase the amount of ginger, especially if you feel nauseated by the garlic and/or oil mixture. Sometimes I like to “chase” the liver drink down by drinking a couple ounces of fresh-squeezed orange or grapefruit juice (or apple juice in winter), which helps to cleanse the palate of garlic taste.

LIVER / GALLBLADDER TEA RECIPE

15–20 minutes after consuming the morning liver / gallbladder cleanse drink, consume two cups of hot liver / gallbladder tea. Add liver tinctures (2 droppers per cup) directly into the tea or else take directly into mouth or separately in a little water. Then drink two more cups of hot or warm tea twice during the day along with liver tincture.

Liver tinctures are available from health food stores or natural products companies. Liver  formulas typically have names like “Liver Detox” or “Wormwood and black walnut.” Look for ingredients like milk thistle, wormwood, oregon grape, black walnut, dandelion, gentian, and garlic.  You can also make your own (see instructions below).

If you don’t wish to use a tincture in your tea, HPDI offers Hepa Plus, an excellent capsule formula (with milk thistle), which you can take separately.

RECIPE FOR LIVER / GALLBLADDER TEA: Use two parts dandelion root and one part of each of all the other ingredients. You can obtain these herbs at your local natural foods store or from Pacific Botanicals (www.PacificBotanicals.com) and/or Blessed Herbs (www.BlessedHerbs).

Dandelion root, burdock root, Pau D’arco inner bark, cinnamon bark, cardamom seed, licorice root, fennel seed, Juniper berries, ginger root, clove buds, black peppercorns, uva ursi leaves, horsetail herb, orange peel, and parsley root and/or leaf.

Mix all ingredients in a large bowl. Then place into glass jars (or other suitable containers) for storage.

Another option is to purchase liver tea premixed. Liver teas can be purchased at your local natural food store. One good brand is Yogi Tea, which makes a “Detox” tea and “Peach Detox” tea that include many of the ingredients listed above. You can use 2 or 3 teabags to brew a stronger tea in lieu of making your own tea.

Perhaps the best commercially available liver tea is Dr. Richard Schulze’s Detox Tea, which 100% organic and/or wildcrafted. It is sold in six ounce bags by the American Botanical Pharmacy (1.800.herb.doc) (www.herbdoc.com). This is my favorite commercial liver tea and the one I recommend most highly (if you don’t make it yourself).

LIVER TINCTURE

As noted above, it is best to include a liver tincture right into your liver tea. You will do this at least three times daily by adding two droppers of liver tincture into your liver tea. You can also take the tincture in a little water or directly into your mouth, if you prefer.

There are several good brands of liver tincture. I prefer to make my own liver tincture, but my favorite commercially available formula is Dr. Schulze’s L-GB Formula.

If you wish to make your own liver tincture, here is a good recipe. Milk thistle seed (eight parts or 40%), Oregon grape root (two parts or 10%), dandelion root (two parts or 10%), Wormwood (one part or 5%), gentian root (one part or 5%), Chaparral (one part or 5%), Black Walnut (one part or 5%), Ginger Root (one part or 5%), Garlic (one part or 5%), Fennel Seed (one part or 5%). Note: parts apply to weight, not volume.

Assemble the fresh herbs. Put them into a blender in the proper proportions. (You can mix them in a bowl first if it fills more than the blender can accommodate at once.) Then add enough 80 to 100-proof vodka to cover the herbs. Then pour the resulting herbal vodka mixture into a mason jar and let it steep for at least 14 days, and possibly many months. Shake it at least once or twice per day.

Sometime after a minimum steeping time of 14 days, strain the mixture through cheesecloth or a t-shirt into a large bowl, and then pour the tincture back into jar(s) and store in the dark. Ideally, start this process on a new moon, and strain the finished tincture during the full moon. That’s a 14-day cycle. If you wait longer, the tincture will be stronger, but sometimes you can’t wait. If you do wait longer, still strain it on (or near) a full moon because the tincture will contain more of the active ingredients.

WHAT TO DO AFTER THE MORNING DRINK

After morning liver or kidney drink and herb tea, then wait at least 15 minutes before consuming juice and superfoods. As noted above, you can drink up to four quarts (one gallon) of juice daily, so don’t skimp on fresh juice. Indeed, drink juice as often you can, and certainly whenever you feel hungry.

You may find that spacing your juice intake throughout the day works best to keep up your energy. You may experience lulls in your energy at times. This is normal during a liver cleanse, but it’s also a great time to drink more juice. So, drink up!

Many individuals prefer to concentrate their intake of superfoods in the morning or early afternoon (e.g., one dose with juice at 9 am and another between 11 am and 1 pm). Superfoods can be very energizing, which may not be desirable late in the day. However, you should experiment to see what works best for you.

IMPORTANCE OF OWNING A JUICER

Juicing is powerful and an integral part of the liver cleanse experience. What juice does is provide extremely potent nourishment that requires little or no digesting. People ask me whether they can use a blender. Not for making juice on a liver cleanse. A blender is a great tool for making the citrus-based liver drink, but not juice.

For example, juice made in a blender contains all the fiber, which is not necessarily a bad thing if you’ve completed a juice flush, and are just making drinks or smoothies. You can even use a blender to mix juice (that you’ve made in a juicer) with superfoods like Rejuvenate!™ while on a liver cleanse.

But the point of juicing on a liver cleanse is allowing your body to apply all its energy for detoxification, purification, rejuvenation, and regeneration. Forcing your body to digest fiber just isn’t compatible with a juice-based liver cleanse. I tell everyone who doesn’t already own a juice and a blender to get both. They are tools indispensable to anyone serious about their health. So whichever one(s) you don’t already own…get them today!

I personally own six juicers, including a Champion, Green Star, Breville, Hurom, and Omega. I use them all depending on my daily needs. Green Star (twin gear juicer) produces the best juice with the driest pulp (i.e., better extraction), but it takes more time. It also does the best job with juicing leafy greens.

The Champion (masticator) is fast and offers the easiest cleanup, but results in wetter pulp (which both my dogs and chickens love). Breville (centrifugal juicer) offers speed and relatively easy cleanup, and works well for root vegetables. Single augur juicers (like Hurom) offer high-quality juice with reasonably dry pulp and still do a good job with leafy greens.

For individuals who worry about the cost of a juicer, I can assure you the health benefits far outweigh the costs. Juicing regularly is like health insurance, only better since it actually makes you healthy instead of just helping fix you when you’re sick (which juice also does). Yet, I know people who regularly spend a lot of money to keep their cars in shape with regular oil changes, tune-ups on schedule, and periodic preventive maintenance. But they won’t buy a juicer.

Everyone knows that taking care of your car via routine maintenance helps prevent unexpected breakdowns and keeps the vehicle in shape so that serious problems don’t occur. But not so many people extend this principle to themselves. However, a little “routine maintenance” on your body/mind/soul three or four times per year (even for just 3–5 days) makes a world of difference when it comes to building and maintaining good health.

Tip: If you or someone you know can’t afford a juicer, try your local Goodwill, Salvation Army, or thrift store. I’ve seen high-quality, commercial-grade juicers in such stores for $15.00. When I find one at low cost, I usually buy it, and then give it away to someone who really needs it.

WHAT ELSE JUICE WILL DO FOR YOU

Juice nourishes, hydrates, alkalizes, and supports the entire cleansing process. It also boosts mood and can modulate pain (depending on the type juice you make). In addition, juice is sometimes to referred to as a “blood transfusion.” Think about it, juice is a fluid that doesn’t require digestion. It is full of minerals like magnesium, sodium (e.g., from celery) (which is very different than processed table salt), silica (e.g., from cucumbers), and iron (from many red vegetables). Thus, juice is well known to build low blood counts, especially when red vegetables (like beets) are juiced.

In this way, juice demonstrates its healing powers to build blood counts, whereas modern medicine will employ a blood transfusion. Juice does it naturally, inexpensively, and without complex procedures, or admission to a hospital.

Juice also provides high levels of plant phytochemicals that protect cells, act an antioxidants and Nrf2 activators, combat aging, and keep us youthful from the inside-out.

WE RECOMMEND REJUVENATE!™ SUPERFOODS

We recommend taking Rejuvenate! superfoods during your liver cleanse. I especially enjoy using original Rejuvenate! because it provides the most chlorella and spirulina, which are highly cleansing. And it tastes great in juice.

But all the Rejuvenate! formulas taste good (although everyone seems to have a preference). And while I like greens for detoxifying, all the formulas provide therapeutic levels of dietary nucleic acids, which support detoxification and are highly nourishing to the body.

Few people these days get adequate levels of nucleic acids in their diet. Dr. Benjamin Frank went so far as to argue that nucleic acids are essential nutrients like vitamins and minerals. I am inclined to agree with him because I have personally feel the difference when I am getting enough nucleic acids (about 300 mg daily minimum for me) compared to times when I don’t (which isn’t often these days). That’s about the amount of nucleic acids provided by one scoop of Rejuvenate! (any version since they all provide about the same amount per scoop).

So, 300 mg (the amount of nucleic acids provided in one scoop of Rejuvenate!) makes a noticeable difference in my energy level, feelings of well being, and improved appearance. However, I try to take three to six scoops (or more) daily because the benefit continue to accrue at higher levels.

1,500 mg (the amount of nucleic acids in five scoops of most Rejuvenate! formulas) seems to be an optimal amount to take per day. More than that amount doesn’t appear to give me any additional benefits, but I definitely notice a corresponding decrease in benefits when I consume smaller daily servings.

FOUNDATIONAL SUPPLEMENTS & ENHANCEMENT FORMULAS

We always recommend taking four foundational supplements daily. The four we recommend are a high-potency multivitamin (like Mighty Multi-Vite!™), essential fats, antioxidant / vitamin C formula (like Ultimate Protector™ or PRO-C™), and a Rejuvenate! superfood. I have discussed the importance of foundational supplements in other articles, including Rejuvenation Program: Part Four. During a liver cleanse, continue taking your supplements with juice. These supplements will support your body while you cleanse, just as they support health before and after it.

Beyond foundational supplements, we recommend seven enhancement supplements that are important for building and maintaining good health. These include: CoQ10 (ubiquinone) or ubiquinol, Myo-Mag (magnesium & malic acid), Hepa Plus (the liver formula I mentioned above), Nascent Iodine, echinacea, and Immune-Assist. OTHER IMPORTANT PRACTICES

Other important practices to include during the remainder of the day after a morning liver or kidney drink and herb tea include: 1) bowel cleansing herbs (no need to take a break from these herbs); 2) liquids (other than liver/kidney tea), including herbal teas and pure water (try to drink at least a few quarts in addition to vegetable juices during the day), 3) exercise (preferably one hour) (at the intensity of your choice, but walking and yoga are good, especially for moving lymph fluid), 4) meditation, affirmations, prayer/mantras, deep breathing exercises, journaling, etc. to relax and center the mind.

If there is a particularly affected area of the body that you wish to heal, you may include hydrotherapy (e.g., hot and cold showers), sauna therapy, castor oil packs, or poultices (e.g., a drawing poultice).

I have detailed some of these important practices in my articles on the Rejuvenation Program, including supporting protocols for rejuvenation. I won’t go into much detail here because of space considerations, but please refer back to my series of ten articles on the Rejuvenation Program, and to the Rejuvenation Program page itself, which is on our main website.

If there are any practices or protocols that are important to you, then definitely consider adding them into your liver cleanse. I make many suggestions, but you may know (or learn) what works best for you in terms of practices that can take your liver cleanse over the top (so to speak). Listen to yourself.

While I won’t go into much detail at this point regarding many important practices that can support a successful liver cleanse, I will address the topic of bowel cleansing. Although I have addressed this topic before (see Rejuvenation Program: Part Two), I feel it is especially relevant to liver (and kidney) cleansing. (You can read what I’ve written before, but I want to present a slightly different perspective on bowel cleansing here.)

BOWEL CLEANSING IS IDEAL DURING A LIVER CLEANSE

Many natural care practitioners say that all cleansing begins with bowel cleansing. I believe they say this partly because their experience shows that just doing a complete bowel cleanse can significantly improve their patients’ health and “cure” many maladies. Certainly, cleansing the bowel before a liver cleanse is a good idea, and will help prepare the body for it.

Bowel cleansing itself no doubt is powerful. But when combined with liver or kidney cleansing, bowel cleansing can turbocharge the cleansing process, as well as accelerate the processes of detoxification, rejuvenation, and the creation of optimal health.

So, it’s true! It is always a good idea to spend at least some of the during your liver cleanse (or kidney cleanse) performing a bowel cleanse. It can easily be done concurrently with liver or kidney cleansing, or separately.

While a basic juice flush usually acts to cleanse the bowel, the ultimate goal is to facilitate the body’s creation of health by engaging in practices that act synergistically to support the most complete cleanse possible. With respect to bowel cleansing, we recommend several excellent formulas that can be used while cleansing the liver or kidneys. These formulas include HPDI’s own Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula, which acts to sweep the entire gastrointestinal tract.

INTESTINAL REJUVENATION FORMULA

We recommend you take Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula up to three times daily (away from food or juice) mixed with at least 12–16 ounces of water). Initially, you might just take it once daily at the level of one teaspoon. Eventually, you can work your way up to one teaspoon three times daily.

The key is making sure your bowel is working well at the initial levels (1/2 teaspoon to 2 teaspoons) before increasing the dose. The reason for starting slowly is that some people may experience constipation (or reduced bowel transit time) initially do the increased fiber. The body eventually adjusts. At that point, the formula can help facilitate bowel action.

HOW IT CLEANSES THE BOWEL

Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula grabs onto materials in the digestive tract, moving them through the digestive system where they can be eliminated. The formula will sweep away various blockages, debris, hard to remove materials, and even clear bowel pockets.

The formula includes ingredients (like slippery elm and marshmallow root) known to coat and soothe gatrointestinal mucosa. In this way, it both sweeps away hardened debris, but also softens such deposits before removal, and protects the entire lining of the GI tract.

As a consequence of its capacity to latch onto materials in the digestive tract, Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula is especially effective for detoxification. The GI tract, and especially the bowel, is often the most toxic region of the body.

When blockages occur and elimination functions are compromised, the intestines are a source of toxicity. Notably, Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula is useful both for sluggish bowel action and for too frequent bowel activity. For sluggish bowels, it adds bulk and clears the digestive tract with a sweep-like action. For overly frequent bowel action (or diarrhea), it regulates flow by controlling the rate of elimination. In this latter capacity, it has been known to prevent dehydration and fluid loss from chronic diarrhea.

As you might guess, a formula like Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula can be taken regularly or periodically, and it will always act to help regulate bowels, remove toxins, and cleanse the bowel. I take it year-round with just a few breaks.

According the the Merck Manual, the majority of Americans (and increasingly everyone around the world) will suffer from bowel pockets, if they live long enough. Most of want to live a long life with a high quality of life. Taking Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula can help prevent bowel pockets and/or help cleanse bowel pockets if they already exist.

I can think of no other single reason for taking Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula than to keep the bowel free of pockets. But the other reasons for taking it, like detoxification, sequestering of poisons, and effective bowel regulation are equally compelling.

We need to continue to cleanse our GI-tract throughout our lives, and especially as we age (and our metabolism slows). HOW TO TAKE INTESTINAL REJUVENATION FORMULA

The easiest way to take Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula is to mix it into water. I usually put it into a 16-ounce mason jar with about 12 ounces of water. Shake it vigorously until well mixed, then drink. Then you can add another four ounces of water to the jar and re-shake, then drink again. This clears the jar of any loose formula, and ensures you get the entire dose.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU HAVE AN EXTREMELY SLUGGISH BOWEL

Certain individuals with extremely sluggish bowels may require a stronger herbal formula to provide the body with greater support for creating movement in the bowel. In such cases of extreme bowel sluggishness, we recommend Intestinal Formula #1 (available from Dr. Richard Schulze’s American Botanical Pharmacy). If this is the case for you, then take Intestinal Formula #1 as directed (usually one capsule daily with dinner) until the bowel function is normalized. Then you can shift on to Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula in order to obtain all the benefits of a fiber and herb formula designed for sweep the entire gastrointestinal tract.

CONCLUSION: PERIODIC LIVER CLEANSING SUPPORTS OPTIMAL HEALTH

Liver cleansing is one of the best ways of improving health, boosting energy, detoxifying the body, and increasing quality of life. In fact, I believe it has become essential to cleanse your liver. Given the levels of toxins in our environment, including in foods, water, air, soils, and throughout our homes, there is every reason to cleanse you liver often. That is, to do a liver cleanse at least once or twice per year, and preferably more often, such as once per season.

Yet, liver cleansing can also be done more frequently by incorporating cleansing techniques into your lifestyle. For example, consuming more fresh vegetable juices, raw foods, liver support herbs (like milk thistle).

Remember, too, that keeping you liver clean can be aided by avoiding toxins. Read Part Two of the Rejuvenation Program series (see resources section below). Avoid or reduce your exposure to liver toxic foods, drinks, and substances. The list includes alcohol, conventional produce (containing pesticides), and artificial ingredients (food colorings, flavorings, preservatives, and sweeteners (like aspartame and sucralose). Prudent avoidance goes a long way toward reducing the toxic load that must be dealt with by your liver.
