ALKALINIZE WITH LEMONADE DIET & PH ADJUST

Fred Liers PhD lemonade pH Adjust alkalinizing formulaSummer is here. That means lemonade! As in the “Lemonade Diet” or “Master Cleanse.” The lemonade diet is famous since Stanley Burroughs wrote his classic, The Master Cleanser. Hollywood has used his lemonade diet for decades—for health and weight loss. In recent years, the lemonade diet has gone mainstream.

While safe, effective weight loss may be its “claim-to-fame,” the lemonade diet is useful as a kidney cleanser promoting the health of the kidneys and bladder system, including the entire urinary tract. The lemonade diet cleanses kidneys best when combined with kidney-specific herbs like Uva ursi, parsley, cornsilk, and juniper berry.

A major reason lemonade is beneficial for health is that it’s highly alkalinizing in the body. Lemonade itself is acidic on the pH scale. Yet, after it is in the body it acts as an alkalinizer! That might seem counterintuitive. But your health—and alkalinity—can count on lemonade to increase your pH levels.

Acid-alkaline balance is critical for health. Your body must maintain a pH of about 7.35–7.45. If you’re too acidic, then your body will find ways (even robbing your bones for minerals) to buffer acidity. Diets high in fruits and vegetables are more alkaline-forming, at least partly due to high potassium levels. High potassium levels drive higher alkalinity.

You can—and should—measure your pH using litmus paper. Once you’ve got a baseline of your pH levels, you can see for yourself how dietary changes—like the lemonade diet—help move your pH toward greater alkalinity and improved acid-alkaline balance.

Given that modern, Western diets high in meats and simple carbohydrates are acid-forming—often in the extreme—it makes sense that lemonade benefits anyone who needs to be more alkaline. Of course, I’m not talking about sugar-laden, or pre-mixed, artificially sweetened, fake lemonade drinks. I mean real lemonade—which is the only kind that works as a “master cleanser.”

I have written about the lemonade diet, as well about kidney & bladder cleansing. I often perform a 3–7 day summer kidney cleanse using kidney herbs—including tinctures and teas—and follow it with a few days of the lemonade diet.

Make lemonade: squeeze fresh lemons, add maple syrup and cayenne pepper

This summer, I totally reversed order. I started with a 15-day lemonade diet and followed it with a three-day kidney cleanse. You can gain huge alkalinizing (and kidney cleansing) benefits from lemonade alone.

The original recipe for the Lemonade Diet:*

2 Tbsp organic Lemon or Lime Juice
2 Tbsp organic Maple Syrup (dark color/robust taste) (Grade A)
8 ounces fresh water
1/4 tsp organic Cayenne Pepper (optional)

(* from The Complete Master Cleanse)

Modify the recipe to suit your taste. The original recipe can be strong and sweet. However, it provides sufficient calories (from maple syrup) to live on for days, weeks, or longer. Try using lime juice for a different flavor. I often use more water—up to 16 ounces or more—for this amount of ingredients.

Among the nutritional supplements that helps me while lemonade fasting—and especially on the longer fasts—is Rejuvenate! Original Greens superfood. It is highly energizing and nourishing. I recommend using a green superfood like Rejuvenate! Original Greens because it is highly energizing and nutritious, yet light in the body and supports detoxification. You can put it directly into your lemonade or take it separately. I prefer to stir it into my second or third serving of lemonade—so early in the day—but not in my first dose of lemonade.

Not only does Rejuvenate! Original Greens provide powerfully nutrition, including important vitamins and minerals, it also supports detoxification processes as it contains chlorella (40%) and dietary nucleic acids (dietary RNA and DNA). The cell wall of chlorella uniquely has the capacity to grab onto heavy metals, chemical contaminants, and toxins—and sequester them for removal from the body. Dietary nucleic acids are energizing and support detoxification processes.

I have used the “Lemonade Diet” for 20 years—in all seasons—at home and “on the road.” I typically go for one to three weeks. I have successfully completed longer lemonade diets, including several for six weeks and at least one for two months. I may not take Rejuvenate! every day during a lemonade diet, but this superfood provides benefits that help turn a “good” master cleanse in a “great” one.

MY LEMONADE DIET—AND A TWIST

After 15 days of lemonade, I feel lighter, leaner, and totally alkaline. In fact, I am more alkaline after this lemonade diet than ever before. Why? Because I did something different this year—I added a twist to my routine.

Instead of following my usual lemonade diet, I added a new alkalinizing supplement called pH Adjust. It is a pure, white powder that you can add to water or lemonade (or other liquid drinks) providing minerals formulated to boost alkalinity: potassium bicarbonate and glycinate, magnesium carbonate, and sodium bicarbonate.

I sometimes added pH Adjust to my lemonade. Other times I took it by itself in water. I started at one-quarter teaspoon (1/4 tsp) daily, and worked up to one teaspoon (1 tsp) daily over the course of my lemonade diet. Adding pH Adjust to my regimen made a significant difference in my overall alkalinity by increasing my pH levels. And I could feel the difference.

pH ADJUST

pH Adjust is formulated specifically to alkalinize your body. I believe it can be more alkalinizing than lemonade itself. Yet, lemonade and pH Adjust work well together to increase pH levels.

I test my pH levels daily using pH paper. I find that when compared to lemonade alone, adding pH Adjust boosts my alkalinity noticeably. I easily maintained an alkalinity between 7.4 and 8.0 for my entire 15-day lemonade diet. That is, I could more easily maintain a higher alkalinity than with lemonade alone.

Note: If I were to continue the lemonade diet longer than two or three weeks, I would recommend reducing or stopping use of pH Adjust. That’s because while you most likely want maintain a relatively higher pH level than you had before you started the lemonade diet, it is best not to maintain a pH of 8.0 for extended periods as you run the risk of too high pH. That won’t be a problem for most people, but testing your pH levels using litmus paper is important. Then you will know your pH levels—and can more readily balance your pH.

After you complete the lemonade diet and return to consuming solid foods, then it is advisable to use pH Adjust to maintain a balanced, but relatively alkaline pH of about 7.45—which is actually an optimal pH for health.

Keeping you alkaline is what pH Adjust is formulated to do…and it fulfills that promise—easily! Now it’s up to you to test your pH, get started on a more alkaline-forming diet, and feel the difference for yourself. Once you’re in the proper alkaline range, you won’t want to go back. And you’ll be better for it!

RACING AND RECOVERY WITH pH ADJUST ALKALINIZING FORMULA

Irena Ossola bike racing recovery pH Adjust alkalinizing formulaEditor’s note: HPDI’s sponsored pro cyclist Irena Ossola is a frequent contributor to our blog. Today she writes about her experience with adjusting and monitoring her pH levels using pH Adjust and pH test strips. ~

I have used HPDI’s pH Adjust alkalinizing formula for about two months, and my experience has been quite interesting. I can see how my body reacts on a chemical level to different stresses—such as racing, travel, training, rest, and different foods I eat. I consistently use pH paper to test my pH first thing when I wake up in order to have a more controlled test.

My primary finding is that after a race my body is quite acidic (pH of 6.3). While in contrast after a day of rest and/or dinner consisting of lots of vegetables and spinach my body is quite alkaline (pH of 7.5 to 8).

TESTING MY pH LEVELS FOR ALKALINITY

While in France and racing very hard, I noticed that taking pH Adjust every morning helped my body feel more balanced and avoid spikes of energy or tiredness. I could rest and sleep more deeply, and train with both greater quality and frequency.

Irena Ossola ph test pH Adjust

Wearing my HPDI gear. Products like pH Adjust and Rejuvenate! superfoods keep in me in top condition.

After a month in France of hard racing and training, I began experiencing leg cramping due to the fatigue and travel. I remained consistent in my testing and taking pH Adjust through this difficult period. Initially, my tests were very acidic when the cramps began. Then as my diet consisted of just soup and salad (to hydrate and ease the burden on my digestion/kidneys) the pH test strips showed my pH to be more alkaline.

Also, I read that bicarbonate could help with cramping as it acts as a buffer in the body. So I continued to take the pH Adjust consistently and even increased my doses by adding an evening dose as well, if my afternoon/evening pH test showed my body was acidic (below pH 7).

DIET AND pH ADJUST KEEP ME ALKALINE

During the period of cramping I know pH Adjust helped to reestablish an alkaline environment in my body. This is important in order to heal from the cramping which creates a lot of lactic acid and fatigue in my muscles. I noticed the symptoms were reduced. During the cramping stage, I usually have cramping even when walking, but this time it was limited primarily to the bike. I recovered faster and felt better sooner, which I think is a result of the pH Adjust and the correct diet.

test pH paper

Testing pH levels with litmus paper guides my diet and use of pH Adjust.

Even after travel and during my return to harder training I will continue to take pH Adjust as part of my normal routine. There is nothing else available or on the market that acts so specifically to balance the pH within the body. This is so important as we introduce and put many stresses on our body that take it out of balance. Whether it is environmental or nutritional, these stresses can lead to further problems. So simply taking pH Adjust every morning can help protect against these variables. I feel the difference when I am consistent in taking it, and my body is under constant stresses due to my work as a professional cyclist.

pH Adjust

pH Adjust helps me maintain optimal pH levels—there’s nothing else like it.

JUICE CLEANSE AND RECOVERY

Last month I returned from Europe where I was suffering from some leg cramping, so I decided to do a body cleanup. I was still taking pH Adjust in the morning and my normal supplements, but I also wanted to do a 3–5 day juice cleanse. This helped the recovery as it cleans out my kidneys and gives my digestion a rest. Whenever I return from travel or racing I try to do a juice cleanse to reboot my system.

Irena Ossola ph test ph adjust

Me and my bike!

The three day juice cleanse ended up being a great flush, and my legs were recovering very well after all the travel, racing, cramping, and stress.

I did notice some feelings of fogginess in my head during the cleanse. But I was told that this is not uncommon to feel as it could be either from the reduced amount of protein entering the body, or because the toxins are being cleaned out of the system, so the mind is also readjusting to this as well.

I have noticed that the more juice cleanses I do, the faster and easier my body adjusts to the fluid diet. I don’t feel hunger, but just craving for the juice and energy. As long as I have enough juice made and on hand, I don’t feel worried about my ability to nourish my body. Without intense training I really enjoy the cleanse and don’t feel the need or cravings for sugar or certain foods. It simplifies life, and allows me to focus on important things like training and my work as a pro cyclist.

Pro Tip: When going through lots of stress on the body like exercise, illness, surgery, polluted environments, etc., increase the amount of Rejuvenate! superfoods in your diet and eat sardines. Both of these nutritional components will help speed up recovery time, and battle any incoming hazards and risk factors to your body.

GUT HEALTH – INTESTINAL REJUVENATION FORMULA

Fred Liers PhD intestinal rejuvenation formula gut healthIntestinal and digestive tract health are critical for health. “All disease begins in the bowel” is a mantra for herbalists and natural healers. Healthy gut structure and function is important for digestion of food, assimilation of nutrients, elimination of wastes, detoxification, and even brain function and mental health due to reciprocal relations along the gut-brain axis.

Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula gut health

HPDI offers several products formulated for optimal gut health. That is, nutritional supplements intended to improve intestinal and digestive system health and function. These formulas include probiotics like Prescript-Assist™ (soil-based organisms), Restore For Gut Health (lignite formula), digestive enzymes, and Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula.

When used as part of an overall program of gut health and especially when combined with an excellent, whole-foods diet, these gut-health formulas help optimize intestinal health in a world fraught with environmental factors and lifestyle elements that can destroy GI tract health. I will talk about some of these products in this article. However, my main focus will be upon Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula.

INTESTINAL REJUVENATION FORMULA

Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula (IRF) is a high-fiber powdered supplement designed to act as a sweep to cleanse and help detoxify the entire gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Dr. Hank Liers formulated it as an effective drawing, detoxifying, and healing formula for the bowel. Within the HPDI supplement system, the formula is considered a specific-condition formula for gut health. That is, it is not a foundational supplement or an enhancement formula.

intestinal rejuvenation formula

Dr. Hank Liers’ Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula cleanses, detoxifies, purifies, and heals.

Detoxification is one of the main components of the HPDI Rejuvenation Program. As such, the capacity of Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula to detoxify the bowel makes it an integral supplement in the program.

Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula is a gentle-acting formula that may be taken daily or as needed. It is easily integrated into a gut health routine or regimen. Regular use is warranted for individuals desiring to maintain gut health. It is also beneficial for periodic use, such as seasonal cleansing, reduced bowel function, or constipation. Yet, it offers many benefits for chronic issues such as bowel pockets, diverticulosis, and diverticulitis. Acute uses include applications for upset stomach, food poisoning, diarrhea, as well as topical use for insect or snake bites.

Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula contains ingredients that help it to cleanse by sweeping wastes and deposits from the GI tract (psyllium, pectin, bentonite), coat and soothe (slippery elm bark and marshmallow root), sequester toxins (fibers and activated charcoal), heal and rebuild the mucosa (vitamin C and CGF).

GUT DYSFUNCTION AND TOXICITY

We live in an age where many environmental factors and lifestyle elements contribute to GI tract dysfunction. These include overuse of antibiotics and use of antibiotics in foods that destroy microbiome diversity. These elements also encompass agricultural toxins (e.g., glyphosate from RoundUp) used in growing GMO (genetically modified organisms) crops consumed in foods that contribute to weakening of tight junctions in the GI tract.

As such, it is imperative individuals take steps to restore proper function and rebuild gut health. Such steps may include consuming organic and non-GMO foods that neither contain herbicides like glyphosate nor GMOs.

In addition, overconsumption of wheat, simple carbohydrates, and sugars is a major element contributing to a pandemic of gut dysfunction. It is well known that wheat and other food crops containing gluten, gliadin, and related proteins readily contribute to GI tract problems among an ever increasing percentage of the population.

Books like William Davis’ Wheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight, and Find Your Path Back to Health, and David Perlmutter’s Grain Brain: The Surprising Truth About Wheat, Carbs, and Sugar – Your Brain’s Silent Killers and Brain Maker: The Power of Gut Microbes to Heal and Protect Your Brain for Life, document the adverse effects caused by the consumption of wheat and refined carbohydrates on health, especially gut and brain health.

Wheat in particular is singled out due to its extensive hybridization, which has created a very different genetic profile for the grain (despite the fact that it has not yet been genetically modified on a large scale). This has created high-yielding wheat variants that can cause or contribute to adverse health effects, and have not been subject to safety testing.

Yet, it is known that glyphosate herbicide is routinely sprayed on non-GMO crops—like wheat, oats, and beans—as a drying agent to speed harvesting. Consuming non-GMO foods may not be sufficient to prevent ingestion of toxic glyphosate and therefore avoid its adverse GI tract effects. Consumers are best served by consuming certified organic, biodynamic, chemical-free, and/or home grown foods.

The increase in gut health issues among the population is reflected both in the dramatic rise of diabetes, celiac disease, obesity, and brain maladies (like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Disease) in recent years.

The authors suggest that elimination or significant reductions in the consumption of wheat, sugar, and refined carbohydrates will go far in helping to improve and restore health. And that starts in the gut.

In addition to dietary changes and lifestyle modifications, a balanced fiber and gut-soothing formula like Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula can be part of a complete program to cleanse, heal, and rebuild the gut for improved GI tract function.

A complete program for gut health includes probiotics, which are the subject of various articles we have written that include recommendations for consuming dietary probiotics and probiotics, creating a probiotic-friendly lifestyle, as well as supplementing with probiotic formulas like Prescript-Assist.

Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula contributes to gut health differently than dietary or supplemental probiotics, yet is designed to work well with probiotics of all types to improve gut health. HPDI recommends a synergistic approach to gut health encompassing diverse approaches (and multiple products) combined to produce optimal results.

INTESTINAL REJUVENATION FORMULA SUPPORTS DETOXIFICATION

Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula cleanses the entire digestive tract by drawing toxins, clearing blockages, and supporting natural movement. It works by coating and adhering to the lining of the intestines. This unique action allows it to absorb fecal plaques and other debris, soften unhealthy deposits, and sweep them away for elimination in the stool.

Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula neutralizes and removes hundreds of toxins, including heavy metals (e.g., mercury and lead). It draws out many times its weight in material encrusted or trapped in the intestinal lining. It also provides nutrients known to nourish the GI tract, and that promote normal elimination functions.

INTESTINAL REJUVENATION FORMULA RELIEVES CONSTIPATION

Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula relieves symptoms of constipation, including gas, bloating, cramps, indigestion, and nausea caused by excessive waste in the bowel. It also soothes the intestinal lining and colon wall, and promotes a well-functioning colon. This means it can contribute to greater health not only through removal of toxins and intestinal blockages, but also by allowing greater absorption of nutrients from food (i.e., after the intestines are cleansed). It also can contribute to achieving normal weight by promoting elimination of old fecal matter (e.g., post-putrefactive deposits), and by helping to establish and maintain normal bowel function.

INTESTINAL REJUVENATION FORMULA SOOTHES AND SUPPORTS HEALING

Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula acts as a wonderful soothing agent for the mucous membrane linings of the entire intestinal tract, especially the colon. This makes it an important formula for individuals experiencing irritable bowel syndrome, spastic colon, colitis, Crohn’s disease, diverticulitis, or any digestive tract condition causing hot, burning, irritated, or bleeding bowels and/or diarrhea. This unique healing formula is also an excellent remedy for food poisoning, because it can absorb harmful bacteria and toxins.

INTESTINAL REJUVENATION FORMULA IS IDEAL FOR PERIODIC CLEANSING

Due to its excellent detoxification and intestinal cleansing properties, Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula is ideal for use in periodic cleansing regimens, such as bowel cleansing, liver cleansing, kidney cleansing, or many types of juice cleanses, fasts, or flushes.

When using Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula as part of a short-term cleansing regimen (3–30 days), it can be used at higher levels, such as up to 1 tablespoon 3–5 times daily, as needed.

Note: After a cleansing regimen, it is useful to repopulate the gut with beneficial bacteria using a high-quality probiotic formula such as Prescript-Assist™ (soil-based organisms).

INTESTINAL REJUVENATION FORMULA HELPS LOOSE STOOLS & DIARRHEA

Another benefit of Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula is its ability to stop loose stools and diarrhea. This is especially important in cases of acute diarrhea in which dehydration and inability to assimilate nutrients from foods creates a problem for health.

As noted, Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula helps regulate bowel function. It therefore can help constipated individuals become more regular. However, in cases of diarrhea, it can fill the GI tract with sufficient bulk (fiber) to slow the rate of excretion, as well as help prevent dehydration due to fluid loss.

Because of the safety and efficacy of Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula, it is also safe for use with children and pets. Be sure to give with sufficient water and scale down the dose appropriately depending on the size of a child or pet.

This results in a formula that is superior in action and that can far more effectively support health and healing in the intestinal tract than single ingredients or shotgun approaches (that often result in reduced effectiveness through the use of fillers, imbalanced formulation, or less than the highest quality ingredients).

Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula is a superior formulation representing a higher level of design expertise. This unique formula can offer significant benefits and results for individuals who wish to improve, regenerate, rejuvenate, heal, and sustain excellent gastrointestinal health.

gut health intestinal rejuvenation formula

Ginger is an ingredient known to support gut health.

PSYLLIUM HUSK POWDER (organic)

Psyllium seed husks are soluble in water, expanding and becoming mucilaginous when moistened. Psyllium seed husks are indigestible in human beings and are used as a source of dietary fiber. They are used to relieve constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, diverticular disease, and diarrhea. They are also used as a regular dietary supplement to improve and maintain regular gastrointestinal (GI) transit.

The inert bulk of psyllium husks helps to provide a constant volume of solid material regardless of other aspects of the diet or any disease condition of the gut. Recent research also shows psyllium seed husks to be promising in lowering cholesterol and controlling diabetes.

APPLE PECTIN

As a dietary fiber, apple pectin is helpful in maintaining good digestive health. Pectin forms a colloidal solution in water and gels when cool. An indigestible, soluble fiber, apple pectin is a general intestinal regulator used in many healing preparations, especially as an anti-diarrheal agent. Researchers at the University of California, Davis (UCD), found that apple pectin acts as an antioxidant against the damaging portion of cholesterol in the blood stream.

It has been established that a diet rich in apple pectin may help protect against certain diseases. Research in Japan shows that apple pectin can act as a chemopreventive agent. Apple pectin helps maintain intestinal balance by cleansing the intestinal tract with its soluble and insoluble fibers.

Apple pectin tends to increase acidity in the large intestines and is advocated for those suffering from ulcer or colitis and for regulating blood pressure. Pectin is also effective in causing regressions in and preventing gallstones. There is also evidence that the regular use of apple pectin may lessen the severity of diabetes.

Apple pectin is known to draw radiation from the body. Russian doctors have found apple pectin to be among the most effective means for protecting against radiation when consuming contaminated foods is unavoidable. Pectin, along with vitamins and minerals, eliminates radionuclides ingested from foods. This is especially relevant given recent meltdowns and radiation releases from the nuclear complex in Fukushima, Japan. Radiation from this catastrophe has contaminated (and continues contaminating) food crops across the entire northern hemisphere (and beyond), especially crops grown in North America.

BENTONITE CLAY

Bentonite clay has a large and varied mineral content, including over 50 minerals. Seen under a high powered microscope, bentonite is composed of extremely minute rectangular particles. The wide surfaces are negatively charged and the edges are positively charged. Therefore, its adsorptive power is many thousand times more negative than positive. It has a negative electrical attraction for positively charged particles. In the human body, various toxic poisons are positively charged. The very minuteness of the particles give it a large surface area (about 1,000 square meters per gram) relative to its volume, thereby enabling it to pick up many times its own weight (as high as 40 times) in positively charged particles.

When bentonite clay absorbs water and swells, it stretches open like a highly porous sponge. Toxins (including pathogenic viruses, herbicides, and pesticides) are drawn into these spaces and bound through electrical attraction. The bentonite is eventually eliminated from the body with the toxins bound to its multiple surfaces. Diarrhea can be remedied through the use of bentonite clay because of its capacity to bind stools. Bentonite clay can act immediately to bind irritants in the gastrointestinal tract.

COLD-MILLED FLAX SEEDS (organically grown)

Flax seeds (Linum usitatissimum L.) contain essential fatty acids (an excellent vegetarian source of omega-3 alpha-linolenic acid), protein, soluble fiber, insoluble fiber, antioxidant lignans, minerals, and vitamins. Lignans are a phytoestrogens considered to be antioxidants. Flax seeds contain among the highest levels of lignans among all plant foods.

The unique properties of Heartland’s RCM™ Flax (Real Cold Milled) organic flaxseed provides enormous advantages over whole flax seeds, ground flax powders, and other milled flax seed products. In particular, cold-milled flax seeds offer readily assimilable omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids because of special no-heat processing that protects these delicate oils and makes them available for uptake into the body.

RCM™ Flax cold-milled flaxseed is processed using a unique, proprietary method that preserves the delicate oils and allows for optimal uptake of the oils and other nutrients (e.g., soluble fiber) into the body. That is, flax seeds must be milled into a flour or meal to obtain maximum benefits from its oils and dietary fiber. However, typical methods of grinding or pounding flaxseeds separate the oil from the seeds (and heat the oils), thereby causing the oils to oxidize and become rancid.

In contrast, cold milling is a unique process that does not involve heating delicate oils and keeps them protected within finely milled pieces of seed. Thus, cold-milled flax seed is not significantly oxidized and remains fresh for an extended period of time. Conversely, when flax seeds are harshly ground or crushed, the oils do not remain fresh because there is no inherent protection from oxidation. Cold milling allows the seed to retain and protect its oils because the process does not release the oils from the seeds .

RCM™ Flax offers a non-refrigerated shelf life of greater than 24 months. A study conducted at North Dakota State University confirms that peroxide levels of RCM™ Flax remain exceptionally low for an extended periods. While this flaxseed retains its freshness for an extended period, when refrigerated (or consumed within several months), it provides amazingly high levels of freshness.

The organic cold-milled flax seeds in Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula contain oil amounts varying between 38–45%, with the oil offering a high percentage (47–53%) of the omega-3 alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) and 15-18% omega-6 linoleic acid. Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) is an essential fatty acid acting in the human body as a substratum for the transformation into EPA and DHA through the action of desaturation and elongation enzymes. The seeds also contain some omega-6 essential fatty acids and exhibit a favorable omega-3 to omega-6 ratio of 3:1. Modern diets contain too few omega-3 fatty acids.

Cold-milled flax seeds possess 15–30% protein (typically 20%) and the amino acids of flax protein have no limiting factors in the adult diet (i.e., they are a complete protein source having all of the essential amino acids in an appropriate balance). Flax seeds are also a source of magnesium, calcium, potassium, phosphorus, zinc, and copper. They also have demonstrated antioxidant activity.

The most important antioxidants flax seeds provide are phytoestrogens known as lignans. Because cold milling flax seeds significantly reduces oxidation, this exceptional flax seed has great potential within the food industry when compared to other alpha-linolenic acid sources, such as typical ground flaxseed powders, which can exhibit rapid decomposition due to a lack of antioxidant protection from oxidation.

The human body easily digests flax seeds. The seed’s outer layer is rich in mucilloid soluble fiber (flax seed possesses 10-15% soluble fiber) and absorbs at least 4 times its weight in water. When mixed with water or stomach juices, the seeds form a gel that creates a physical barrier between the carbohydrates and the digestive enzymes that break them down. The carbohydrates thereby are digested and converted into glucose (blood sugar) at a slow, uniform rate. There is no insulin surge or spike needed to lower the blood sugar level. The water-retaining capacity of the gel also maintains bodily hydration (i.e., helping level out water intake) and electrolyte balance.

MARSHMALLOW ROOT POWDER (organic)

Considered the king of mucilaginous (gel-like) slippery plants, marshmallow offers a unique composition of about 37% starch, 11% mucilage, and 11% pectin (including flavonoids and phenolic acids). When it reaches the colon, marshmallow gel will soften hardened fecal plaques and help to remove them from colon walls. It also acts as a soothing coating and internal moisturizer for the entire digestive tract. Like chia seeds, it neutralizes irritants often found in the intestinal system, and thereby greatly relieves irritation to the mucous membrane lining of the digestive tract.

SLIPPERY ELM BARK POWDER (organic)

The health benefits of slippery elm are rooted mainly in its soothing properties. This mucilaginous herb is effective when used internally for coating and soothing mucous membranes while also absorbing toxins that can cause intestinal imbalances. Slippery elm is an effective remedy for duodenal ulcers, gastritis, diarrhea colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, hemorrhoids, and heartburn. The benefits of slippery elm also extend to being a simple food. As part of a normal diet, the inner bark of slippery elm can be ground and eaten as porridge. This porridge is extremely nutritious and high in antioxidants having a consistency and taste similar to oatmeal. It is also a wholesome and sustaining food for infants and invalids.

ACTIVATED WILLOW CHARCOAL (wildcrafted)

Activated charcoal is charcoal that has been treated with oxygen to open up millions of tiny pores between the carbon atoms. The use of special manufacturing techniques results in highly porous charcoals that have surface areas of 300–2,000 square meters per gram. Charcoal works to trap toxins through “adsorption.” When a material adsorbs something, it attaches to it via chemical attraction. The huge surface area of activated charcoal gives it countless bonding sites for adsorbing toxins.

When certain chemicals pass next to the carbon surface, they attach to the surface and become trapped. Activated charcoal is excellent for trapping carbon-based substances (i.e., organic chemicals), as well as other chemicals such as chlorine. It is known to trap over 20,000 organic chemicals. Many chemicals are not attracted to carbon (sodium, nitrates, etc.) so they pass through charcoal. Because charcoal is not “digested” like food, it may remain inside the GI tract for a time, thereby continuing to actively remove toxins via the bowel.

SPIRULINA PACIFICA

Research has shown that spirulina promotes digestion and bowel function. It suppresses bad bacteria (including E. coli and Candida albicans yeast) and stimulates beneficial flora, including lactobacillus and bifidobacteria. Healthy intestinal flora (i.e., “good” bacteria) are a foundation for good health. They increase absorption of nutrients from foods and help protect against infection. In Japan, researchers found that spirulina significantly reduces kidney toxicity caused by mercury and three pharmaceutical drugs. This suggests benefits for humans suffering heavy metal poisoning. Additional research found that rats consuming spirulina or chlorella algae eliminated seven times the amount of dioxin (a highly toxic chemical) when compared to a control diet.

INULIN / FRUCTOOLIGOSACCHARIDES (from Chicory Root)

Like other types of dietary fiber, inulin also has the benefits of enhancing digestive and intestinal functions, reducing cholesterol, and preventing disease. In addition, inulin has one other major health benefit: it is a prebiotic that feeds the healthy microflora that boost your immunity. Not only does inulin actively promote the growth of existing strains of probiotics in your colon, but it also encourages implantation, survival, and growth of freshly consumed probiotics. By boosting the survival and growth of beneficial probiotics in the inner ecosystem, inulin improves digestion, immunity, and disease-fighting capacity of the body.

GINGER ROOT POWDER (organic)

Ginger rhizome (Zingiber officinale) is an incredibly active and effective gastrointestinal aid with the following properties: 1) Contains a digestive enzyme whose effectiveness even exceeds that of papain; 2) Stimulates the flow of saliva and increases the concentration of the digestive enzyme amylase in the saliva; and 3) Activates peristalsis and increases intestinal muscle tone. Ginger is also known to be helpful in cases of nausea.

BIOVIN® GRAPE EXTRACT

BIOVIN® Grape Pulp, Skin & Seed Extract (>85% OPCs): The BioVin® grape extract in Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula is extracted by ethanol and water and contains the highest percentage of OPCs of any product on the market. OPCs, a class of bioflavonoids, are one of nature’s most powerful free-radical scavengers. As bioflavonoids, OPCs help to increase the effectiveness of Vitamin C. OPCs cross the blood-brain barrier to provide antioxidant protection to central nervous system tissue. Studies have clearly demonstrated that OPCs improve and normalize capillary activity, strengthening capillary walls. OPCs bind to collagen fibers, realigning them in the process to a more youthful, undamaged structure. Elasticity, flexibility, and strength are thereby restored to connective tissue.

LICORICE ROOT POWDER (organic)

Licorice root soothes the GI tract and aids intestinal health. Licorice root is used effectively in those individuals suffering from peptic ulcer and chronic gastritis. It is used to soothe coughs and reduce inflammation, soothe and heal ulcers and stomach inflammation, control blood sugar, and to balance hormones. Licorice is a potent antiviral agent and can be used to treat flu, herpes, and even hepatitis. Licorice is also a strong anti-inflammatory agent.

MAGNESIUM (from magnesium ascorbate)

Magnesium is important for the metabolism of many biologically active nutrients and substances, including calcium, potassium, phosphorus, zinc, copper, sodium, lead, cadmium, hydrochloric acid (HCl), acetylcholine, and nitric oxide (NO). It is required for more than 325 magnesium-dependent enzymes, cellular homeostasis, and activation of the B vitamin thiamin. It mediates the functions of the nervous and endocrine systems, supports proper muscle and nerve function, stabilizes heart rhythm, helps to regulate blood sugar levels, and supports normal blood pressure. Magnesium is important in energy metabolism and the synthesis of proteins.

CHLORELLA GROWTH FACTOR (CGF)

Chlorella Growth Factor (CGF) stimulates lactobaccilus (the “good” bacteria) to grow at four times the usual rate. Experiments with microorganisms, young animals, and children have demonstrated that CGF promotes faster than normal growth. In adults and mature organisms, CGF appears to enhance the functions of nucleic acids at the cellular level that relate to the production of proteins, enzymes, and energy. It also stimulates tissue repair and offers protection against toxic substances at the cellular level.

VITAMIN C (from magnesium ascorbate)

Vitamin C is known to perform many critical functions within the body involving detoxification, tissue building, immune enhancement, pain control, and controlling or killing pathogenic organisms. It is known to be helpful for wound and bone healing, healthy skin and eyes, infections, stress control, toxic exposure, and repairing damaged tissue of all types.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Additional Ingredients: Natural Lemon Flavor, Malic Acid, and Stevia Leaf Extract. These natural flavors and taste enhancers give the formula a pleasing taste and make it easier for individuals to consume.

DIRECTIONS: For long term, gentle rejuvenation of the intestinal tract take about one (1) teaspoon (about 1/3 scoop) several times daily away from food (by at least 20 minutes), or as directed by a health care professional. Place the powder in about 8 ounces of water, thoroughly mix (shake or stir), and drink immediately (before the formula becomes a gel too thick to easily consume).

For a more rapid healing cleanse take one tablespoon (one scoop) multiple times daily away from food (by at least 45 minutes). Add the powder to about 16 ounces of water, mix vigorously, and drink.

We recommend using a suitable container (such as a mason jar) for rapid mixing. Stir rapidly or shake vigorously (with lid attached).

Individuals suffering from conditions of severe diarrhea and loose stools can take one tablespoon (or more) multiple times daily (five times or more) and refrain from food. Put the powder in about 16 ounces of water per tablespoon, thoroughly mix, and drink immediately. In between servings it may be helpful to take 10–20 billion organisms of a multiple strain lactic acid bacteria formula (i.e., a probiotic such as Prescript-Assist). Place the formula directly in your mouth, chew, and then swallow.

While results can be obtained rapidly using this formula, it is most effective when used for longer-term gentle cleansing. Starting with lower doses and gradually increasing dosage often produces best results. This allows the body time to adjust to increased dosages (size and frequency) and facilitates greater therapeutic action from usage.

Note: Taking large amounts without sufficient liquid (e.g., water) or when first taking the formula can slow bowel transit time. Therefore, most individuals will benefit from starting at lower dosage levels and ensuring adequate fluid intake when consuming the formula.

External Applications: Make paste by mixing powder with water. Apply directly to skin or affected areas (e.g., stings, bites, wounds). Wrap with gauze, plastic, etc., and keep poultice moist. Use for up to six hours. Apply fresh poultice as needed. For more information, see the Insect / Bee / Snake Stings and Bites Supplement and Activity Schedule.

Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula does not contain wheat, gluten, rye, oats, corn, barley, soy, yeast, egg, sugar, dairy products, GMOs, wax, animal fats, preservatives, colorings, or artificial flavorings.

Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula is an effective, specific-condition formula for gut health.

INTESTINAL REJUVENATION FORMULA SUMMARY

“Health begins in the gut,” the saying goes. If true, and it seems likely to be, then taking care of the GI tract is more important than ever. This makes sense given the prevalence and multiplication of environmental and lifestyle factors capable of damaging the gut.

These environmental and lifestyle factors include, but are not limited to, 1) the use of antibiotics (both prescribed and found in foods), 2) genetically modified organisms (GMO), 3) the presence in foods (and water, soil, and air) of herbicides like glyphosate sprayed on GMO crops; glyphosate can loosen tight junctions in the GI tract to allow food proteins into the bloodstream, 4) Food proteins (e.g., gluten and gliaden) capable of damaging the gut, 5) dysbiosis, 6) lack of microbiome diversity, and 7) many others.

The solution to these problems is complex, and partly resides in utilizing a combination of strategies and supplements capable of addressing the different aspects and causes of reduced or impaired gut function.

Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula represents one type of supplement known to be helpful in repairing, restoring, and maintaining healthy gut function.

“Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula works well for cleansing. It also helped stop runny stools I had after eating out while traveling.” – T.T., Seattle, WA

Power Juice & Super Smoothie of Pro Cyclist Irena Ossola

Irena Ossola pro cyclist juice cleanseJust the words “juice cleanse” can bring thoughts of hunger, struggle, and lack of energy. Yet, in my experience I have found juice cleansing simplifies life and gives a boost to my days.

I make enough juice each day and drink as much as I want or need. I notice some tired moments where the lack of protein affects my energy, but I also attribute that to my training.

As a professional athlete, I’ve learned a juice cleanse is all about timing. Outside of high-volume training, the juice cleanse is more just a mater of sticking to it. But during the season I recently learned my body fatigues more easily and lacks long-term energy for endurance during training.

Irena Ossola juice cleansing superfoods

Juice cleansing is not easy, but nicely supports my training, racing, and recovery.

This past week I have gone through a pretty tough round of cleansing. I did five days total in which three days were juice only.

I have done cleanses before and even for long amounts of time, but this was by far the most difficult I have ever done. Not because of juice quantity, or hunger, but because of training and energy.

The last time I did a cleanse was before my wrist surgery last fall. I was still training, but not as heavily or intense as right now since the racing season is underway. So when I recently had two hard days of four-hour rides/workouts, my body felt the effects of having no solid substance.

I admit I did “cheat” a little and eat grapefruits alongside the juice. It helped fill my stomach and give me a little more fiber and sugars for my workouts.

Other than raw grapefruit, I followed my cleanse routine: lemonade first thing in the morning, followed by herbal tea, and then fresh juice during the day. As usual, I added Rejuvenate! superfoods to my juices to help with energy, recovery, and needed vitamins.

Irena Ossola juice cleansing superfoods

Juice with superfoods is a nutritious combination.

From my past experience it takes about three days for my body to adjust to the diet. Considering my current training and focus on preparing for races, I don’t think it would be beneficial for me to do more than three days cleansing, especially on juice alone.

The purpose of this cleanse was to replenish my body with hydration and nutrients, whereas solid food is not as efficient. So despite some reduced energy and power, my body feels replenished and recharged. This makes it worthwhile!

As a professional athlete, it is important to tune into how my body feels and what it needs. I was not able to commit to a long cleanse, but as with so many things, every bit helps.

If you are thinking about doing a cleanse, this short 3–5 day cleanse could be a good stepping stone to see how your body reacts. One key component that I include with my juice is Rejuvenate! superfoods. This gives me the vitamins my body needs to recover after hard workouts, so that I can get back out and train hard again the next day.

CLEANSING “POWER JUICE” RECIPE

I use one-quart glass bottles that I reuse from store bought juice (lemon from my cleanse). I fill it about halfway with juice to leave room for supplements and shaking.

Juice:
Carrots
Beets
Celery
Cucumber
Apples
Watermelon
Lime
Ginger
Garlic (optional)

Supplements:
Rejuvenate! Berries & Herbs (pink) – 1 scoop
Rejuvenate! (green) – 1 scoop
Rejuvenate! original greens (blue label) – ½ scoop
Chia Seeds – 1 scoop (2 tbsp)
Glutamine – 1 scoop (5 gm)

SUPER REJUVENATE! SMOOTHIE RECIPE

This is the recipe for the smoothie I drink after my workouts and even just during the day when I am not training. It helps fuel me and gives me energy to last the whole day. It’s packed with vitamins and healthy ingredients. The taste is a bit interesting. I love the mix of lime, ginger, and chocolate that is like no other smoothie I’ve ever tasted.

Fruits
Spinach – about 2 cups
Frozen Berries – about ½ cup
Lime – 1 peeled
Ginger – about 1–2 cm piece
Shredded Coconut – 1 scoop
Banana or Orange – optional

Supplements
Rejuvenate! Berries and Herbs (pink) – 1 scoop
Rejuvenate! (green) – 1 scoop
Rejuvenate! Original (blue label) – ½ scoop
Chia Seeds – 1 scoop (2 tbsp)
Glutamine – 1 scoop
BCAA – 1 scoop (most protein powder contains some BCAAs, but this gives me added recovery)
Chocolate protein powder – about 1–2 scoops (I use egg white protein powder or Vega Protein)
Bee pollen – 1 tbsp
Flaxseeds – 1 scoop
Hemp Hearts – 1 scoop

JUICE JOURNEY OF CYCLIST IRENA OSSOLA

Fred Liers PhD juice cleanse kidneys Irena OssolaBack in July, HPDI’s sponsored athlete Irena Ossola was up in Canada training for and winning bike races. After months on the road of training, racing, and travel—and toward the end of the season—she experienced an episode of cramping. Blood tests showed a condition of rhabdomyolysis.

In rhabdomyolosis, damaged skeletal striated muscle rapidly breaks down. Consequently, the breakdown products of the damaged muscle cells are released into the bloodstream. Some of the products, including the protein myoglobin, can harm the kidneys.

Cyclist Irena Ossola and Fred Liers discuss HPDI supplements as part of peak-performance health.

Extreme or strenuous physical exercise is among the known risk factors for rhabdomyolosis. This is particularly the case when a person is dehydrated. Being an elite athlete who endures training, racing, and traveling for months, it is no surprise that Irena could experience this condition.

Fortunately, Irena’s cramping ended after a few days of rest, hydration, and electrolyte intake as directed by her doctor.

Having time available after her recovery, Irena decided to embark upon a juice cleanse.

She would start with a kidney flush. That made sense to her not only because she had the time available, but also because while she had resumed normal activities, she hoped to cleanse her system so she could return to training in an optimal condition of readiness.

After careful consideration, Irena plans and prepares for a five-day juice cleanse. She obtains a high-quality Breville juicer, kidney-specific herbal teas and tinctures, Rejuvenate! superfoods, and lots of fresh organic produce.

Her plan includes consuming raw foods on the first and last days, and just freshly made vegetable and fruit juices (along with teas, tinctures, and Rejuvenate! superfoods) on the middle days. She will consume up to one gallon of fresh juice daily.

She will not stop her training altogether, but not having to travel or train intensely for races means she can match her training level to her physical capacity during the cleanse.

Irena documents her daily progress in her blog. She ends up completing a full week (seven days) on her juice cleanse. At the end of her journey, she writes: “My body feels so good I am happy to have completed this journey.”

Below we include Irena’s full article complete with all entries and some of her photos. ~~~

CYCLIST KIDNEY JUICE CLEANSE

by Irena Ossola
(originally published July 2015)

PREPARATION

I have researched, discussed, and read so much about juice cleanses and think I am to tackle it for five days of rebooting my system.

After months of training, racing, travel, and other life stresses I decided I need to cleanse my body of all the toxins and get a fresh start for my kidneys. I returned from a long few months on the road and am just getting over an episode of cramping where blood tests showed rhabdomyolysis in my kidneys.

The doctor had me get an IV of 2L of fluid to help hydrate and flush my kidneys. After a couple more days of rest and looooots of pedialite and hydration the cramping stopped and I felt back to normal, at least with walking and everyday activity.

Training will take a little longer to rebuild however, so it is the perfect time for a juice cleanse. Without the big intensity workouts that require a lot of energy, and good recovery, I am able to stick with just juice and let my body recover.

Discussing a plan and information with Fred Liers, and Dr. Hank Liers of Health Products Distributors, Inc., we have put together the best program and technique for me as a professional cyclist to tackle this cleanse.

Over the next few days I will be posting daily updates about my journey. I will also include advice, recipes, pictures, and discussion of how I feel while still training and going through this cleanse/diet.

LET THE JUICE JOURNEY BEGIN!

Irena Ossola Kidney Cleanse Juice

Rejuvenate! Plus superfood, detox tea, and other supplies.

PROGRAM: 5-DAY KIDNEY JUICE CLEANSE

Day 1 and 5: Raw Foods – Eating just fruits and vegetables to ease my body into the more restricted and intense cleanse of just juice

Day 2, 3, 4: Just Juice – Drinking as much and as often as I feel. But only juices with a combo of fruits and vegetables to give me enough vitamins, minerals, and energy to keep my day going and keep training (even with no solid food).

Mornings: Start out with a Lemonade drink first off to get my system going. Then 15–30 min later I drink 8–16 oz of Detox Tea. Then about 1 hr later I’m getting hungry and it’s juice time.

Lemonade Recipe: 8 oz purified water, 4 oz lemon/lime juice (about 3 lemons and 1 lime), cayenne pepper (to taste as things get spicy), small amount of maple syrup or stevia to sweeten ( I have also just been toughing it out and doing without).

Detox Tea: I’m in a crunch for time and money so I just bought the Yogi Brand Peach Detox tea and put 2 bags into 3 quarts of water. 1 quart I drink for my morning tea routine, and the rest I drink throughout the day. The kidney cleanse also calls for taking tictures with the tea. These are reduced down herbal liquids that you can find at whole foods or ordered online.

Fred Liers of Health Products Distributors, Inc., recommended getting a couple different ones since I was in a crunch on time and not able to order the correct ones. I found the Uva Ursi at Whole Foods, but they didn’t have the Parsley or Juniper Berry. I took 2 shot glasses almost full of tea and put in a dropper of the tincture, then took them like a shot before drinking my 8–16 oz of tea.

DAY 1: RAW FOOD AND PREP

Today I started the cleanse with the Lemonade and Detox Tea but was happy to not jump in head first to the strictly juice just yet.

I ate an apple, banana, baby carrots, and a salad for lunch and dinner which included an avocado to get some protein and fats (you can also include nuts since that is considered raw food). I also threw in some watermelon and strawberries into the salad which made it extra good.

Since I got my juicer and wanted to get it for a spin and have some fun experimenting I did make some juices and drank those during the day also.

This first day wasn’t too hard since I am already used to eating a lot of salad and fruits. Just not having any meat or protein was tougher and felt a bit hungrier and meals didn’t hold over as long

I also noticed I was peeing A LOT more just from the tea and juices. This will probably be an indication of the bathroom usage to come in the upcoming days, haha.

Training: 1’20″ ride easy just to feel out legs and get some exercise on the bike. Swam about 30″ total, going back and forth between hot tub and pool to get contrast and circulation in muscles.

Irena Ossola salad raw food cleanse

I consumed raw foods the day before my cleanse.

DAY 2: LET THE JUICE CLEANSE BEGIN

Started off with my Lemonade, the sourness is already a tough chug but beware of that cayenne. Added too much this morning and it definitely woke me up.

After drinking the tea (20 min after the lemonade) I was surprisingly not very hungry during the morning. I had my first juice at 9:30ish and usually if I don’t eat soon after waking up I’m starving. This was a surprisingly common feeling all day. I kept drinking throughout the day but even when I was riding or swimming I didn’t feel weak or tired at all. Throughout the day I’ve felt pretty good overall.

I am enjoying the lack of thinking in this. I don’t have to think about what I’ll have post ride, or for lunch, or for dinner, because it’s already decided for me…JUICE! No dealing with cravings or suppressing hunger or getting snacks to hold off till meals. I like just being able to drink whenever and as much juice as I want. I feel lighter and no stomach issues.

Irena Ossola Breville Juicer

I use a Breville juicer.

cleanse juice bottles

Yummy juice!

Today’s Flavors:

1 –    Kale, chard, cucumber, celery, beets, carrots, few strawberries, lime rind, about 1/2 scoop Rejuvenate!

2 –    More Fruit (base from #1) – + Apple, orange, banana, more strawberries, watermelon, lemon/lime rind, ginger

3 –    Garlic (base from #1) – + Garlic clove, parsley, ginger

Review of Juices:

#2 – Definitely sweeter and lighter on flavor

#3 – The garlic juice had a funky aftertaste from the garlic and needed the parsley to cut the strong flavor, but probably put too much because the juice came out a bit spicy. Added more Rejuvenate to this one and helped bring down the intensity from the garlic.

Training: 2’ 10″ ride relaxed and feeling good. Not feeling hungry in the ride, but had to stop for a pee break (that seems to be a common theme today). Hungry at end of the ride and juice was great for recovery. Swam 40″ total, with some back and forth to the hot tub for more circulation.

Felt good and never got hungry since I had juice before and after exercise. That is one thing that was important today with exercising, is to keep juice and hydration available at all times. Pre and post is so important for training and on a cleanse you can’t neglect your body’s needed nutrients.

DAY 3: START STRONG, THEN A LITTLE TIRED

I didn’t even wake up very hungry, and once I had my Lemonade and Tea I felt full already before even having any juice. My routine has gotten pretty on point also; I get up and right away put on water for tea, then I start squeezing the lemons/lime for lemonade.

Once I’m done making the lemonade I sip on it while the tea steeps and I prep for juice. Washing all the produce and getting bottles ready. As I drink down the tea it’s juicing time. Lay out the spread and juice out 3 or 4 quarts. I am having a lot of fun with different recipes and playing with the flavors where each bottle is different.

Today’s Flavors:

1 –    The BASE – Kale, chard, cucumber, celery, beets, carrots, few strawberries, lime rind, about 1/2 scoop Rejuvenate!

2 –    More Fruit (base from #1) – + Apple, orange, banana, more strawberries, watermelon, lemon/lime rind, ginger but no carrots

3 –    Garlic (base from #1) – + Garlic clove, parsley, ginger

4 –    Base but added ginger and parsley

Review of Juices:

#2 –    Is probably my favorite, sweeter and lighter without any harder flavors like with the garlic

#3 –    This one makes me feel like I’m being healthy, cause it doesn’t taste so great, haha.

#4 –    This one had a little kick with the parsley and ginger, definitely tasty!

Juicing Tips: As you can see from the pictures juicing can get messy. I recommend getting all the ingredients and bottles ready and layed out so you can juice out more smoothly. Lay out newspaper under the juicer so and splattering or spilling is a lot easier to clean up. Beware of beets!! They stain and any platters in the way or cabinets needs to be wiped immediately, or it’ll leave a mark. The juicer is easy to wash, without oils it makes a simple rinse quick and simple.

Overall today was a little tougher, and I’m only 3 days in!! How the heck do people do this for months?! The morning and all day was pretty good in not feeling very hungry, but my energy level was definitely lower.

I got about halfway through my ride and started feeling my muscles getting tired even though I wasn’t even going very hard. My mind wasn’t focusing as well (bonktown USA) and wanted to finish the ride, but I stuck it out and finished the training.

Same thing when I went swimming, just feeling like a nap and not high on energy at all. My body is feeling great, clean and light. It’s just that since I am so used to having constant protein and other nutrition inputs this change has come with a little getting used to.

DAY 4: TRAINING A LITTLE TOUGHER

One thing I noticed today is that waking up and getting out of bed was easier and I was ready to get the day going. I don’t feel hungry or sluggish in the morning but found my juicing routine has been pretty nice in the morning. What did hit hard to day was feeling tired in training and then in the evening before bed.

This cleanse is definitely not for the high volume athlete or intense training season. I am glad to be doing light riding and swimming, but I still feel my body tired about 1 hr into a ride and just want to pull over for a nap. I make sure to drink plenty of juice before and after my training for energy, and lots of water during for hydration.

Tip: Make sure you do the cleanse when you can exercise but don’t have intense, high volume, or super focused training. This will drain some of your energy, but you will feel so much better through and after the process is complete.

Today’s Flavors:

1 –    The Base – But no red beets, plus squash, no watermelon + Rejuvenate! mix

2 –    Fruit – + Raspberries and watermelon + Rejuvenate! mix

3 –    Garlic, parsley, squash, no strawberries + Rejuvenate! mix

4 –    Mix assorted + Rejuvenate! mix

Rejuvenate! Mix – 1/2 scoop of Rejuvenate! Plus, 1/3 scoop of Rejuvenate! Berries and Herbs, 1/4 scoop of Rejuvenate! Original (Greens).

By adding this Rejuvenate! superfood mix to my juices it has given me more energy and adds more vitamins and minerals so I am not just drinking the juice alone but also getting other benefits and nutrients that my body needs. There is also extra protein that adds some more substance to the juice to hold my appetite over.

DAY 5: DON’T HOLD BACK, GOING THE DISTANCE

Today should be the last day and the raw food day, but I’ve decided to go for a whole week of cleansing. So I will make it five days of just juice and two days of raw food on either end. I am feeling good with the juice and something in me doesn’t want to stop before complete a full week.

My biggest tip for today when doing the cleanse is to not hold back on the amount of juice you make or drink. It doesn’t matter how much you drank the first day because as the days go on your body will need more nutrients as it burns through stores.

I found that I am losing a lot of weight, not intentionally, but just because of the cleanse and exercise. So if that is your goal then don’t think you have to stick to just a certain volume everyday. Each day I have increased my juice intake by at least two cups. Today I am at four 32 oz bottles (not completely full), and the first day I only had three. Listen to your body and give it what it needs.

Today’s Flavors:

1 –    The Base – + Garlic, parsley, banana, squash, no red beets

2 –    Fruit – The Base – +  Watermelon, strawberries, raspberries, ginger, apple, banana

3 –    Garlic – Garlic, parsley, ginger, red beets, watermelon, no apple

4 –    What was left –  Ginger, apples, kale, beets

I’ve upped the garlic and banana; since garlic is so good for vitamin C and cleansing and banana has some extra calories and energy to run on.

DAY 6: HOME STRETCH

So everyone has said “Wow, only juice, you must be so hungry.” But I’m really not, and I haven’t really had big cravings for anything either. Getting my body into the routine, it has settled and is happy with the nutrients of the juice.

I am happy to start eating real food again tomorrow, but definitely very happy I did this and went through the experience of cleansing. Not just for my physical health but also mental. It was great to refocus on what is important for my training and life beyond just meals and satiating hunger through the day. This helped me rebalance and feel my body in a state of renewal.

One concern for most people when doing something like this is time and money. For time, if you think about the time you take to either make and eat meals or get food at a store or restaurant it takes up about 2–3 hours per day, give or take. I have been getting up each morning and it takes me about 1.5 hrs for prep, juicing, and cleanup. And I drink throughout the day so I am not having to sit down with a plate or meal. It really is a great on-the-go kind of plan.

For money, I have saved all my receipts from the grocery store, so after tomorrow is over I will calculate all of my expenses for this experience. But it has cost me roughly $15 – $20 per day. And that is completely organic produce. I have gotten a couple things from my dad’s garden (which is obviously ideal), but most was store bought.

Thinking about what people spend on meals and eating out, that can get well over $20 per day. And getting juice at a shop or store, can run $5 just for a quart, and I am drinking well over four quarts per day. This is definitely an economical diet if done correctly.

Today’s Flavors:

Basically the same, but today I threw in peaches and more berries…I also strategically put in a banana into my first and second juices, so that before my ride and after I would have the extra sugar and potassium.

Irena Ossola Rejuvenate superfood mix

My superfood mix uses all three Rejuvenate! superfoods.

DAY 7: ALL JUICED UP

Today was the final day of official cleansing and a day of raw food. I think my body knew it was the day because I woke up hungry for the first time all week. I still did my lemonade/tea and juicing for the day as I wanted to keep my hydration up and keep the routine.

It was nice to think about what I would eat for my first food back, and I went for a banana this morning. Seemed appropriate since bananas are the common cure for cramps, and that’s why I did the cleanse. It was so great tasting and funny thing is, the chewing sensation was weird to get used to again.

The rest of the day was pretty normal and not any huge cravings, but I had half an avocado before my workout and the other half after.

I was surprised to not eat more but just didn’t feel like it, my appetite was pretty slim. But I was definitely satisfied and could say full after just eating a little bit.

In the evening for dinner I went out and had an amazing salad. My body feels so good, I am happy to have completed this journey.

Irena Ossola juice cleanse

My first solid food in a week!

I did not do this cleanse for weight loss, but to clean out my body and help my kidneys and system recover after the fatigue of cramping. But considering I was in a down time with training it was the perfect time to do it and also shed a couple pounds before harder training again.

So I will say it was incredible to see my weight change as each day passed. I started out at 148 pounds which is pretty normal for me and what I have been racing at this season, today I weighed myself in the morning and was 143.

I am pretty shocked by how much I lost in this short time. And I wasn’t even holding back or feeling the pains someone usually feels in dieting or losing weight, I drank as much as I wanted and never felt hungry or strong urges to eat.

I would really recommend this cleanse to anyone looking to clean up their system and/or to shed some unwanted weight.

It is so important to take on things like this with a smart and prepared approach with the intent of health and well being, not just to get skinny or for looks. If that is the drive then it’s more likely the weight will be put right back on, because it’s about a lifestyle and making good choices for the benefit of your body.

To eat well and be happy with your body is the most important thing.

So I hope this blog post has helped anyone looking to start or research doing a kidney cleanse. Or even just reading along as I go though along my road as a professional cyclist.

It has been an amazing experience and I plan to do it again before my season of hard training starts in the fall/winter.

HAPPY JUICING!
