MEGAVITAMIN MYTH-BUSTING – ORTHOMOLECULAR MEDICINE NEWS ON VITAMINS

Fred Liers PhD megavitamin myth busting orthomolecular vitamins andrew saul omnsAs the year draws to a close, it is a good time to reflect on the past year, as well as to look forward to the New Year with respect to one’s health goals. This includes assessing your nutritional supplement regimen. There is more confusion about nutritional supplements than ever. With this in mind, we present “Megavitamin Myth-Busting” from Andrew W. Saul, PhD and Helen Saul Case from the Orthomolecular Medicine News Service to clear confusion about vitamins and other nutritional supplements, and set the record straight. Enjoy! ~

MEGAVITAMIN MYTH-BUSTING

Commentary by Andrew W. Saul and Helen Saul Case

(Orthomolecular Medicine News Service, Dec 23, 2019)

People are so confused about endless internet vitamin legends. Now it’s time to be blunt and set the record straight.

The media says that taking vitamins will kill me. Is that so? NO.

It’s been said that the FDA does not regulate nutritional supplements. Is that true? NO. “FDA regulates both finished dietary supplement products and dietary ingredients.” [U.S. Food and Drug Administration, http://www.fda.gov/Food/DietarySupplements/ ]

I have heard that “vitamin supplements are useless” and that “supplements do not prevent or cure disease, and they do not help you live longer.” Is that accurate? NO.
http://orthomolecular.org/resources/omns/index.shtml

I get enough vitamins from my diet. NO, you don’t.
http://www.orthomolecular.org/resources/omns/v01n03.shtml

Aren’t foods a more economical vitamin source than supplements? NO.
http://orthomolecular.org/resources/omns/v09n32.shtml

Should I really stop all vitamin supplements for a week (or more) prior to surgery? NO.
http://orthomolecular.org/resources/omns/v11n07.shtml

Do I need special vitamin preparations for my body to absorb them? NO. With vitamins, there is usually no absorption issue. All animals need and absorb nutrients, including vitamins. If they didn’t, they’d be long extinct. The surface area of your small intestine, if all the nooks and crannies were flatted out, would be half the size of a regulation basketball court. There is ample opportunity for nutrient absorption.

Doesn’t taking vitamins just make expensive urine? NO.

VITAMIN C

Does vitamin C causes kidney stones? NO.
http://orthomolecular.org/resources/omns/v09n05.shtml

Does vitamin C interfere with chemotherapy? NO, vitamin C actually enhances chemotherapy.

http://www.doctoryourself.com/chemo.html

I have heard that ascorbic acid is not really vitamin C. Is that true? NO.
http://orthomolecular.org/resources/omns/v09n27.shtml and
http://orthomolecular.org/resources/omns/v05n10.shtml

Will vitamin C from a genetically modified (GMO) source hurt me? NO.

Does the acidity of ascorbic acid vitamin C destroy probiotics? NO.
http://orthomolecular.org/resources/omns/v09n27.shtml

If I take too much vitamin C during pregnancy, will it cause a miscarriage? NO, vitamin C is highly protective of your developing baby.
http://www.orthomolecular.org/resources/omns/v10n06.shtml

Does taking too much vitamin C during pregnancy causes infantile rebound scurvy? NO.
http://www.orthomolecular.org/resources/omns/v14n12.shtml

https://www.youtube.com/embed/04cOSwZ43II?autoplay=1

Will I get to much sodium from taking sodium ascorbate vitamin C? NO, says cardiologist Thomas Levy, MD, JD.
http://www.orthomolecular.org/resources/omns/v14n12.shtml

Does G6PD mean no supplemental vitamin C? NO. The Riordan Clinic has administered 15,000 mg vitamin C by IV to G6PD patients without harm.
http://www.doctoryourself.com/RiordanIVC.pdf

But since Linus Pauling died from cancer, didn’t he fail to benefit from all the vitamin C he took? NO.
http://orthomolecular.org/resources/omns/v06n24.shtml

VITAMIN A

Some persons have a genetic trait that makes it more difficult for them to convert dietary carotene into active vitamin A. Does this mean they must take preformed oil retinol A? NO. Even a poor converter can still make sufficient vitamin A from carotene if they eat lots of fruits and vegetables . . . which we should all be doing anyway.

Does beta carotene cause cancer? NO. (But cigarettes do.)
http://www.orthomolecular.org/resources/omns/v04n09.shtml and
http://www.orthomolecular.org/resources/omns/v04n23.shtml

B VITAMINS

Does niacin hurt the liver? NO.
http://www.doctoryourself.com/news/v4n21.html and
http://www.doctoryourself.com/niacin.html

Is niacin clinically incompatible for people with methylation issues? NO. Theoretically, perhaps. But Dr. Abram Hoffer, the world’s most experienced niacin physician, has said it is not clinically significant.

Aren’t B-vitamins so poorly absorbed that they need to be methylated? NO. Comparing their molecular weights with the simplest of all sugars, we find:

Glucose (C6H12O6) weighs 180 grams/mole
Niacin (C6H5NO2) weighs 123 g/mol
Pyridoxine 169 g/mol
Pantothenic acid 219 g/mol
Biotin 244 g/mol
Thiamin 265 g/mol
Riboflavin 376 g/mol
Folic acid or folate 441 [Methylated may be better. However: 1) See: Bailey LB. Dietary reference intakes for folate: the debut of dietary folate equivalents. Nutr Rev. 1998;56(10):294-299. And 2) The Linus Pauling Institute says: “Unmetabolized folic acid concentrations returned to baseline levels at the end of the study, suggesting that adaptive mechanisms eventually converted folic acid to reduced forms of folate.”
Cobalamin 1,355 g/mol [methylated is probably better in this case]

MAGNESIUM

I get plenty of magnesium in my diet! NO, you probably don’t.
http://www.orthomolecular.org/resources/omns/v13n22.shtml and
http://www.orthomolecular.org/resources/omns/v12n20.shtml

VITAMIN E

Is vitamin E dangerous? NO. The safety record of all forms of vitamin E is exceptionally good.
http://www.orthomolecular.org/resources/omns/v07n11.shtml

VITAMIN K

Do I need to consume vitamin K-2 because K-1 in foods is ineffective? NO. Your body will make the conversion for you. John Cannell, MD, writes that the conversion “occurs through an intermediary molecule, vitamin K3, which is made in the intestine from vitamin K1. [Hirota Y, et al. J Biol Chem. 2013 Sep 30.] “[M]odern humans are deficient in K2 because they do not eat large quantities of vitamin K1 containing foods. If we look at Paleolithic humans, they probably got high amount of vitamin K2 from eating large quantities of kale and spinach-like foods, very high in K1, which then supplied their tissues with all the vitamin K2 they needed. [A]s far as getting enough vitamin K2, the best thing to do is eat your greens.”

VITAMIN D

I drink milk, and I spend time in the sunshine. Don’t I get plenty of vitamin D? NO. If your shadow is longer than you are, you are not making vitamin D from sunlight, says William Grant, PhD. Thus, little vitamin D is made by your body in the six colder months of the year. This is also true in the summer months if only exposed to sun mornings and afternoons.

TRANSCRIPT (partial)

Hello, this is Dr. Hank Liers from Health Products Distributors, Inc. (HPDI). Today we introduce a new website: http://www.IntegratedHealthHemp.com. The purpose of this site is really to bring into one place some of the top of the line hemp extracts / CBD products available on the market today.

I would like to talk about the difference between “broad spectrum” hemp extract and “full spectrum” hemp extract. Both of those extracts are derived from the industrial hemp plant. When you do the extracts, the nature of the extract of the industrial hemp plant is that is has a THC level of less than 0.3%. This is not enough to cause “highs” or any problems. However, from a drug testing point of view, even if there is 0.2% THC in a hemp extract and someone takes it every day, it builds up in the body, and you might fail a drug test.

The industry has defined two levels. One is called a broad spectrum hemp extract and one is called full spectrum hemp extract. In the case of the broad spectrum hemp extract, there is further processing of the product so that THC is totally removed. In the case of the full spectrum hemp extract, there is no further processing, so you have small amounts of THC along with all the other ingredients, the cannabinoids and terpenes. In fact, from a full spectrum hemp extract, you tend to get a more effective product, but then you are in the position of perhaps not passing a drug test.

As we go through discussions of the products, you will see there are products in which we have broad spectrum hemp extract and products that have the full spectrum hemp extract, so you have choices to make. Still, with extremely effective products.

I would like to give an overview of products we carry on the new website. We have seven products. Five of them we buy from a company called Quicksilver Scientific. The reason we do is that they have a very special technology for delivering ingredients into the body that is beyond the typical oral supplement. This is called a “liposomal delivery system” where you actually pack the ingredients into a #liposome, which is very small, and can actually be absorbed through the tissues of the mouth and upper GI tract to get into the body very quickly and efficiently.

One of the reasons we love these Quicksilver Scientific (QS) products so much is that you might be able to get, for example, up to seven times more into your system within the time period of a few minutes. When you can do that, because you can get so much more in effectively, you don’t have to use as much in the first place. And secondly, because it goes in so quickly, you begin to get the effects and the benefits almost immediately.

The first two products I’d like to talk about are #hemp extracts. One is called Nanoemulsified Broad Spectrum Hemp Extract 400 and one is called Nanoemulsified Full Spectrum Hemp Extract 400. The broad spectrum has 0% THC and the full spectrum has a small amount, less than 0.3% THC. But if you were tested, you would not test positive with the broad spectrum, and you may test positive with the full spectrum. You have a choice from that perspective.

The next group of products I want to talk about are products Quicksilver just introduced, and they are called the CBD Synergies products. One of the things I like about these CBD Synergies products is where you combine the effects of the CBD and hemp extract with synergistic ingredients that give you a broader range of applicability and effectiveness.

NEW NANOEMULSIFIED HEMP EXTRACTS FROM QUICKSILVER

Dr. Hank Liers, PhD nanoemulsifed hemp extracts Quicksilver Scientific CBDToday I talk about two new hemp extracts available from HPDI in the Quicksilver brand. I specifically present the difference between two new products: Nanoemulsified Broad Spectrum Hemp Extract 400 and Nanoemulsified Full Spectrum Hemp Extract 400. These two products replace the single product known as “Colorado Hemp Oil” previously available from Quicksilver. We now offer these two products and a range of hemp and CBD formulas on our new hemp website: www.INTEGRATEDHEALTHHEMP.COM.

Quicksilver Scientific replaces its Colorado Hemp Oil with two superb hemp extract formulas. The new formulas (Broad Spectrum and Full Spectrum) are similar. They both have the same level (21 mg) per serving of hemp extract. Also, they both contain 16 mg cannabidiol, which is an increase from the 12 mg cannabidiol in the old product (Colorado Hemp Oil).

In addition, both of the new hemp extract formulas contain more ingredients associated with hemp extracts—including additional cannabinoids, terpenes, and beta-caryophyllene—that improve the effectiveness of hemp extract products.

The main difference between the Broad Spectrum and the Full Spectrum hemp extract formulas is that the Broad Spectrum Hemp Extract has 0% THC, and the Full Spectrum Hemp Extract contains a very small amount (less than 0.3% THC).

For people tho are regular tested for drugs (e.g., THC), the Broad Spectrum Hemp Extract is recommended. For those individuals who are not drug tested, the Full Spectrum Hemp Extract is recommended because it will better support the functioning of the endocannabinoid system.

The price of the Nanoemusified Full Spectrum Hemp Extract 400 and the Nanoemusified Broad Spectrum Hemp Extract 400 hemp extract products remain the same as the price for the discontinued Nanoemulsified Colorado Hemp Oil product. HPDI currently sells each of these new hemp extract liposomal products for $78.50 (retail).

These two new Quicksilver Scientific hemp extract formulas are superior liposomal hemp extract products. Both Broad Spectrum Hemp Extract and Full Spectrum Hemp Extract are highly effective formulas utilizing unique nanoemulsification technology to maximize the many known benefits of hemp extract.

RECENT ADVANCES IN LIPOSOME TECHNOLOGY

Dr. Hank Liers, PhD liposomes liposomal nutrientsHealth Products Distributors, Inc. recently decided to augment the variety of liposomal products we carry based upon the significant advancements of the technology during the last few years.

Among the benefits of using liposomes are that significantly higher levels of certain nutrients can be delivered directly to the cells where they are needed. In this article, I will discuss some of the recent scientific advances and new products associated with these advances.

Types of Liposomes

Figure 1 – liposomal types

SMALLER IS SIGNIFICANTLY BETTER

In December 2015, I wrote a blog article on liposomes to introduce the liposomal products we began selling at that time. Unfortunately, the particle size of these original products are on the order of 500 nanometers (nm), and as such are not nearly as well absorbed as the much smaller liposomes that have recently been developed by Quicksilver Scientific.

Figure 1 gives an overview of current liposome types. These include multi-lamellar vesicles (MLV) that range in size from 300–5,000 nm and have more than one bilayer.

Large unilamellar vesicles (LUV) range in size from 100–300 nm. They have a single bilayer and a high trapped volume, but have lower thermodynamic stability and decreased uptake.

Small unilamellar vesicles (SUV) range in size from 20–100 nm. SUV have a long circulation half-life and better cellular accumulation. Small lipid particles have the fastest uptake kinetics and can participate in paracellular (between cells) transport. The nutritional liposome industry is moving toward the use of SUV.

Small liposomes (SUV) are drastically more efficient at intracellular delivery of encapsulated compounds. In a recent study with carefully sized liposomes, cellular uptake increased nine-fold as liposome size was decreased from 236 nm to 97 nm and was 34 fold higher at 64 nm (see Figure 2). This figure shows flow cytometry results (a measure of cellular uptake) for Caco-2 cells incubated with liposomes containing Dil-C18 at 15 min and 60 min intervals.

Size effects of liposomes for cellular uptake

Figure 2 – Chart showing greatly enhanced absorption of liposomes as size decreases

HPDI CARRIES NEW LIPOSOMAL PRODUCTS

Our new liposomal product supplier currently is providing a wide range of products that have stable liposomes of about 50 nm. These products are bottled in such a way that they are taken by pumping (or squirting) the contents directly into your mouth (i.e., oral administration). This is an extremely clean method of dosing in which a few pumps of liposomal liquid can be rapidly taken or administered with no need for placing the product into separate glass of water or squeezing packets.

Because of the very small size much of the ingredients are absorbed through mucus membranes and into the system and cells extremely quickly (within seconds/minutes). In addition to the ingredients within the liposome, one gets significant amounts of phosphytidal choline into the cell membranes with a very beneficial effect on membrane function.

We are currently carrying the following Quicksilver Scientific liposomal products:

  1. Vitamin C with R-Lipoic Acid
  2. Glutathione
  3. Colorado Hemp Oil
  4. NanoMojo – a unique combination of 19 adaptogenic herbs

Quicksilver Liposomes

We highly encourage that you use the products because of the huge benefits they provide. We use them ourselves every day.

BENEFITS OF LIPOSOMAL NUTRIENTS (LIPOSOMES)

Dr. Hank Liers, PhD liposomes liposomal nutrientsHealth Products Distributors, Inc. carries Quicksilver Colorado Hemp Oil, Glutathione, Vitamin C, Milk Thistle, Melatonin, and  NanoMojo. Among the benefits of using liposomes are that significantly higher levels of glutathione and vitamin C can be delivered directly to the cells where they are needed. In this article, I will provide some of the basic information required to understand the benefits of these products.

Figure 1 shows the basic design of a liposome with the nutrient to be delivered in the center.

liposomes liposomal nutrients

Figure 1 – Liposome Diagram

liposome is a spherical vesicle having a lipid bilayer (see Figure 2). The liposome can be used as a vehicle for administration of nutrients. Liposomes can be prepared by disrupting biological membranes (such as by sonification). Liposomes are most often composed of phospholipids, especially phosphatidylcholine derived from soy or sunflower lecithin.

liposomes liposomal nutrients

Figure 2 – Cross-Section of Liposome

DISCOVERY OF LIPOSOMES

Liposomes were first described by British haematologist Alec D. Bangham in 1961, at the Babraham Institute, in Cambridge. They were discovered during testing of the institute’s new electron microscope by adding negative stain to dry phospholipids. The microscope pictures served as the first evidence for the cell membrane being a bilayer lipid structure. Their integrity as a closed, bilayer structure, that could release its contents after detergent treatment was established during the next year. Bangham and colleagues Jeff Watkins and Malcolm Standish subsequently wrote a paper in 1965 that effectively launched the liposome industry.

MECHANISMS OF LIPOSOMES

A liposome has an aqueous solution core surrounded by a hydrophobic (water hating) membrane, in the form of a lipid bilayer. Hydrophilic (water-loving) solutes dissolved in the core cannot readily pass through the bilayer. Hydrophobic chemicals associate with the bilayer. A liposome can be loaded with hydrophobic and/or and hydrophilic molecules. To deliver the molecules to a site of action, the lipid bilayer can fuse with other bilayers such as the cell membrane, thus delivering the liposome contents directly to the cell.

DIETARY AND NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS

Until recently the use of liposomes were primarily directed at targeted drug delivery. However, the versatile abilities of liposomes are now being discovered in other settings. Liposomes are presently being cleverly implemented for the specific oral delivery of certain dietary and nutritional supplements.

A small number of dietary and nutritional supplement companies are currently pioneering the benefits of this unique science towards this new application. This new direction and employment of liposome science is in part due to the low absorption and bioavailability rates of some oral dietary supplement ingredients such as glutathione. Therefore the natural encapsulation of lypophilic and hydrophilic nutrients within liposomes (see Figure 3) has made for a very effective method of bypassing certain elements of the gastric system and aiding the encapsulated nutrient to be delivered directly to the cells and tissues through the lymphatic system.

It is important to note that certain influential factors have far reaching effects on the percentage of liposome that are yielded in manufacturing. These influences also have an effect on the actual amount of realized liposome entrapment and the actual quality of the liposomes themselves. These are very crucial elements which lead to the long-term stability of the liposomes. These complex yet significant factors are the following: 1) The actual manufacturing method and preparation of the liposomes themselves; 2) The constitution, quality, and type of raw phospholipid used in the formulation and manufacturing of the liposomes; 3) The ability to create homogeneous liposome particle sizes that are stable and hold their encapsulated payload. These primary and key elements comprise the foundation of an effective liposome carrier for use in increasing the bioavailability of oral dosages of dietary and nutritional supplements.

OUR SUPPLIER HAS IDENTIFIED HOW TO MAKE
HIGH-QUALITY LIPOSOMAL SUPPLEMENTS (LIPOSOMES)

Our supplier, Quicksilver Scientific, has spent years researching the best formulation techniques and manufacturing processes for liposome encapsulated supplements. As part of this research, they analyzed a broad range liposomal supplements. This is what was learned:

Liposomal Supplements Must Use Phospholipids Suitable for Making Liposomes. In order to make strong, stable liposomes that can encapsulate nutrients and not “break apart” too easily, it is important to use Phospholipids from highly refined sources that have a natural mix of phospholipids, including a high percentage of Phosphatidylcholine (PC) and Phosphatidylethanolamine (PE).

Some products are made with low-quality soy lecithin, which does not have the proper percentage of PC or PE to make liposomes. This type of lecithin is typically used as a food additive, and should not be used in liposomal supplements.

They have found that Phospholipids extracted from non-GMO soy lecithin work the best for high-quality, affordable liposomal supplements. While a very high intake of unrefined soy ingested as food may contain tiny amounts of undesirable substances, the intake of highly refined and purified phospholipids derived from soy lecithin does not pose much risk. In fact, they have not found any evidence of anyone being harmed by the regular intake of phospholipids extracted from non-GMO soy lecithin. (Some manufacturers use a high-quality non-GMO sunflower lecithin.)

Liposomal Supplements Must Have at Least an Equal Ratio of Phospholipids to Key Nutrients. By analyzing many commercial and homemade products, it was found that most of them are of poor quality. Some are merely emulsions.  This means the nutrients are simply mixed with a small amount of low-quality phospholipids or lecithin, and there are very few liposomes, if any at all.

One indicator of an emulsion is the amount of phospholipids or lecithin in the product. For proper liposome encapsulation, you must have at least an equal amount of phospholipids and nutrients. If the phospholipids or lecithin are listed as “Other Ingredients,” it is very likely there is not enough material to create any liposomes, even if the production process is otherwise appropriate.

Some companies choose to make emulsions and call them “Liposomal Supplements” because they are easy and inexpensive to produce.

If you take an emulsion that contains lecithin and a nutrient like vitamin C, you may see overall good results since both components are excellent supplements individually. You will not, however, be able to experience the potentially exceptional results offered by products using real Liposome Encapsulation Technology.

Liposomal Supplements Must Be Protected from Oxygen. Liposomes are a natural fit for water-soluble nutrients that are not otherwise bioavailable. But the process of making stable, quality liposomes is tricky. Liposomes are sensitive to factors such as heat and oxygen.  The inherent stability (and in some cases instability), of the phospholipids and each nutrient also play an important role in the overall stability of liposomal products. Getting all of these things exactly right, then assuring the liposomes and nutrients remain stable throughout the product’s shelf life is key.

One way to enhance the stability of a liposomal product is through uni-dose packaging. Many of the liposomal products that have been analyzed are stored in jars, plastic bottles, or even capsules within bottles. Opening the bottle to remove the product exposes the remaining product to heat, light and oxygen. This can be detrimental to the liposomes, and can cause rapid degradation of the nutrients.

Uni-dose packaging protects the product from oxygen until moments before it’s consumed, keeping it safe and effective throughout the shelf-life of the product.

Three Additional Signs of a Low-Quality Liposomal Supplement:
1) Consistency. If the product is very watery, it is most likely due to an insufficient amount of phospholipids or the use of low quality phospholipids.
2) Uniformity. If the product separates into layers, it is a strong indicator the liposomal mixture is deteriorating. On the other hand, if there are noticeable lumps or the product feels gritty, it is a sign that the nutrients are coming out of the liposomes and forming crystals.
3) Size. If the volume of the dosage is too small, there are not enough phospholipids and water to make proper liposomes.  For example, 1,000 mg of vitamin C and 1,000 mg of phospholipids, along with the necessary amount of water for proper liposome formation, will fill a teaspoon (5 ml).  It is not likely this amount of material could fit into one or even two large-sized capsules.

EFFECTS OF LIPOSOMAL SUPPLEMENTS

Liposomal supplements effects are significantly increased as far as mental and physical potency, due to increased absorption into the system. The effects of specific supplements are increased to extreme degrees, because higher doses can be taken of vitamins and minerals with minimal side effects endured and because they are delivered directly to the cellular structures where they are needed.

As an example of the power of these liposomal supplements, Dr. Thomas Levy (who has extensive experience with liposomal supplements) states “My clinical opinion is that one gram of properly-produced and orally-ingested liposome-encapsulated vitamin C is as or more effective than 5 to 10 grams of vitamin C given intravenously, for an acute viral syndrome”.

LONG-TERM BENEFITS

Over the long-term, the added benefits of liposomal products include, increased vitality and immune support, lowered tolerance to the substances (even at high dosages and when taken over long periods of time) administered, and supplements lasting much longer due to the increased strength. Liposomals are now attached to some of the strongest, most popular and most well known anti-oxidants in the world (e.g., glutathione, curcumin, R-lipoic acid, and vitamin C), and are becoming a mainstream phenomenon in the supplement industry.

SHORT-TERM BENEFITS

Many users of liposomal supplements decide to do so in order to reap many of the short-term health benefits they can offer, which include increased energy throughout the day and a much brightened mood.
