AT ISSUE: NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENT QUALITY AND PURITY

Dr. Hank Liers PhD supplement quality

The issue of nutritional supplement quality and purity has always been of great importance to Health Products Distributors, Inc. (HPDI). We entered the nutritional supplement industry in 1988 with the intention of providing the most pure and effective products possible and engaged in practices that ensured that our intentions for the highest quality and purity have been met (see below).

This issue is very important to me because on a daily basis I am dealing with the selection of ingredients, the selection and performance of our manufacturers, and the monitoring of product quality and testing.

vitamins quality purity safety

The HPDI approach emphasizes quality, minimal fillers, and good manufacturing practices (GMP).

GOOD MANUFACTURING PRACTICES (GMP) COMPLIANCE

Unfortunately, not everyone in the nutritional supplement industry did the same thing as HPDI. This has led to the industry organizations such as NPA and the FDA strengthening the good manufacturing practices (GMP) requirements and ensuring that the companies responsible for producing nutritional supplements were following the GMPs.

The issue of compliance with these GMPs is an ongoing concern. For example, in early February, the Office of the Attorney General for the state of New York sent cease and desist letters to four major US nutritional supplement retailers ordering them to stop selling seven herbal dietary supplements in their store brands.

The stores are GNC, Target, Walgreens, and Wal-Mart. The products are echinacea, garlic, ginkgo biloba, ginseng, saw palmetto, St. John’s Wort, and valerian root. An investigation of these products implied that several or all of the seven products tested are “either unrecognizable or a substance other than what they claimed to be, and therefore constitute contaminated or substituted products.”

The Natural Products Association (NPA) responded by letter to the Office of the Attorney General for the state of New York questioning the methodology for testing of the herbal ingredients and clearly state that federal regulations protect consumers. The link to the NPA’s letter is here.

THE HPDI APPROACH TO QUALITY SUPPLEMENTS

For the record, we provide below practices that HPDI follows to ensure that our customers are getting the most effective supplements available. To accomplish this goal, we focus our expertise on the following areas:

Building a Line of Supplements Based on Strong Basic Research and Clinical Studies

  1. Formulas carefully designed to include ingredients demonstrated to be effective in clinical trials and research studies.
  2. Formulas balanced across the product line, so that consumers do not get either an excessive amount of any ingredient or an inadequate amount of important substances known to be important for balance in the body.
  3. Avoidance of a “shotgun” approach in formulation in which every possible ingredient known to be useful for a condition is included in a product. This approach often leads to imbalances in an overall supplement program.
  4. We maintain knowledge of latest nutritional research and clinical studies, and also maintain strong personal contacts with knowledgeable authorities in the field. We improve our formulas whenever possible.

The Highest-Purity, Highest-Quality Ingredients

  1. HPDI uses only the purest ingredients available (often USP or Pharmaceutical grades) and we specify a guaranteed or standardized potency whenever possible.
  2. Raw materials are obtained from reliable suppliers dedicated to providing the highest-quality ingredients.
  3. Our products are designed not to target price points, but to achieve the best results. For example, we choose whenever possible to use coenzyme forms of vitamins in our formulas that may cost ten times more than the usual forms used by vitamin manufacturers. Coenzyme forms of vitamins are the forms that are used in the body and are usually found in food.
  4. Use of the nutrient carriers best recognized and utilized in the body. We avoid sulfates, chlorides, carbonates, and oxides. As appropriate, we use Krebs cycle bionutrients (citrates, alpha ketoglutarates, succinates, fumarates, and malates), amino acid chelates (arginates, glycinates, aspartates, lysinates, etc.), and body-specific carriers (picolinates, polynicotinates, etc.).
  5. Giving the body options by providing multiple mineral carriers. For example, we often use both Krebs cycle and amino acid carriers.
  6. Formulating and packaging products that contain fatty acids to best protect them from oxidation both in the bottle and in the body. This may include the use of a gelcap, Vitamin E, ascorbyl palmitate (fat-soluble Vitamin C), rosemary, or a coated tablet to keep out moisture and oxygen.
  7. Our manufacturers generally include desiccants in the bottles of capsules and tablets in order to retain freshness.

Minimizing or Eliminating Unnecessary Fillers, Carriers, Excipients, Food Antigens, Preservatives, Coloring Agents, and Other Additives.

  1. Exclusion of wheat, gluten, corn, dairy, eggs, yeast, simple sugars, preservatives, artificial colorings, and artificial flavorings in our products.
  2. Exclusion (with just a few necessary exceptions) of rice, rye, barley, oats, soy, tomatoes, wax, and salicylates.
  3. Exclusion of dicalcium phosphate, rice powder, or synthetic fillers such as povidone. When absolutely necessary, we only allow USP grade microcrystalline cellulose as a filler.
  4. Avoidance of all lubricants with the exception of magnesium stearate, stearic acid or ascorbic palmitate in small amounts (less than 2%) when necessary for successful manufacturing of tablets or in some cases capsules.

The following link provides additional information on our approach to the excipients we allow in the HPDI products – HPDI Statement on Excipients

Working with Experienced and Trustworthy Manufacturers and Suppliers

  1. We conduct business only with manufacturing companies that are trustworthy, understand HPDI’s philosophy and approach to product formulation, pay close attention to our guidelines, and have excellent reputations for using “good manufacturing practices” (GMPs).
  2. We have worked with many of our manufacturers for over 10 years. For any new manufacturers we work with, an intense education program is engaged in that quickly brings them up to date concerning our demands for high-quality products.
  3. HPDI products are produced by manufacturers of superior-quality supplements following FDA manufacturing guidelines and who have cGMP certifications from the most demanding certifiers such as NSF and NPA.

In conclusion, I want to assure you that HPDI is continually monitoring the quality of the products we provide to our customers and improving them in any way possible!!

(4) healthful diets may mitigate the need for expensive medical procedures, such as coronary bypass surgery or angioplasty;

(5) preventive health measures, including education, good nutrition, and appropriate use of safe nutritional supplements will limit the incidence of chronic diseases, and reduce long-term health care expenditures;

(6)(A) promotion of good health and healthy lifestyles improves and extends lives while reducing health care expenditures; and

(B) reduction in health care expenditures is of paramount importance to the future of the country and the economic well-being of the country;

(7) there is a growing need for emphasis on the dissemination of information linking nutrition and long-term good health;

(8) consumers should be empowered to make choices about preventive health care programs based on data from scientific studies of health benefits related to particular dietary supplements;

(9) national surveys have revealed that almost 50 percent of the 260,000,000 Americans regularly consume dietary supplements of vitamins, minerals, or herbs as a means of improving their nutrition;

(10) studies indicate that consumers are placing increased reliance on the use of nontraditional health care providers to avoid the excessive costs of traditional medical services and to obtain more holistic consideration of their needs;

(11) the United States will spend over $1,000,000,000,000 on health care in 1994, which is about 12 percent of the Gross National Product of the United States, and this amount and percentage will continue to increase unless significant efforts are undertaken to reverse the increase;

(12)(A) the nutritional supplement industry is an integral part of the economy of the United States;

(B) the industry consistently projects a positive trade balance; and

(C) the estimated 600 dietary supplement manufacturers in the United States produce approximately 4,000 products, with total annual sales of such products alone reaching at least $4,000,000,000;

(13) although the Federal Government should take swift action against products that are unsafe or adulterated, the Federal Government should not take any actions to impose unreasonable regulatory barriers limiting or slowing the flow of safe products and accurate information to consumers;

(14) dietary supplements are safe within a broad range of intake, and safety problems with the supplements are relatively rare; and

(15)(A) legislative action that protects the right of access of consumers to safe dietary supplements is necessary in order to promote wellness; and

(B) a rational Federal framework must be established to supersede the current ad hoc, patchwork regulatory policy on dietary supplements.

~~~
As we head into the 21st year since passage of DSHEA, we submit the text of the Act as a milestone in the history of US law. We look forward to a time when the sentiments expressed in the 1994 congressional findings may lead to revisions to the law and new laws that expand and support individuals’ proper use of dietary supplements.
High-RNA Rejuvenate! Superfood
Dr. Hank Liers, PhDIn this article I will provide a bit of history and my excitement concerning the development of our high-RNA Rejuvenate! superfood. Over the past 25 years I have formulated hundreds of nutritional supplement products. As you may know, I first entered into the business of formulating and selling nutritional products because of my wife Joanne’s extreme multiple chemical sensitivities. The challenge to me always was to design products that even the most sensitive person could tolerate, and to create products that would provide significant benefit to individuals taking them.
I spent a great deal of my time reading scientific and clinical studies that showed the most effective forms and amounts of the ingredients. In addition, I read books on physiology, endocrinology, immunology, and biochemistry in order to understand how certain nutrients would be used in and affect the body. On occasions when I saw new possibilities for products with great potential I would take extra time with my research in order to ensure that I produced a groundbreaking product. This is the case with Rejuvenate!™.
Rejuvenate! High RNA Superfood rejuvenate
DISCOVERING DIETARY NUCLEIC ACIDS
In 2004, I first learned about the benefits of ribonucleic acids (RNA) as nutritional supplements. Initially, I discovered the idea of consuming dietary nucleic acids from several books by Dr. Bernard Jensen that my son, Fred, was reading at the time. These books included Food Healing for Man (1983) and Chlorella: Jewel of the Far East (1992).
Dr. Jensen told the story of a man named Charlie Smith. According to Dr. Jensen, this man had received a honorary high school degree at the age of 133. When Dr. Jensen visited Charlie Smith, the oldest living American at the age of 135, he was healthy, clear-minded, and had a wonderful memory.
Dr. Jensen’s first question for Charlie was, “What have you been eating for the last 30 years?” Charlie’s reply was that he ate canned sardines and crackers. Dr. Jensen couldn’t believe it. But after some investigation, he found out that canned sardines were the highest-known food in RNA.
We soon discovered references in Dr. Jensen’s books to the works of Dr. Benjamin S. Frank. Among Dr. Frank’s writings is Dr. Frank’s No-Aging Diet (1976). As presented in his bestselling book, the main components of Dr. Frank’s diet are: 1) one three-to-four ounce can of sardines at least four days per week, and some fish including salmon and other seafood on the other days, 2) calf liver once per week, and 3) beans or lentils once or twice weekly.
Dr. Frank had done extensive research on both humans and animals using his diet. In his books, he recommends a diet high in nucleic acids to counter the aging process and essentially to rejuvenate the body. We were astonished at the health benefits (see list below) reported by Dr. Frank. Benefits he found not only include improved tissue oxygenation and cellular energy production, but also smoother skin and a more youthful appearance. It was an exciting time for us. We could hardly wait to try Dr. Frank’s “no-aging” diet for ourselves!
BENEFITS OF DIETARY NUCLEIC ACIDS (RNA, DNA)
  • HIGHER ENERGY (ATP) PRODUCTION IN THE BODY
  • GREATER MUSCLE MASS / STRENGTH / ENDURANCE
  • SMOOTHER SKIN / MORE YOUTHFUL APPEARANCE
  • EASIER BREATHING / “ANTI-ANOXIA” EFFECT
  • ELEVATES TISSUE OXYGENATION
  • BENEFICIAL CARDIOVASCULAR EFFECTS
  • LOWER CHOLESTEROL LEVELS
  • OVERALL PHYSICAL REJUVENATION
  • TEMPERATURE TOLERANCE (COLD/HEAT)
  • IMPROVES LONGEVITY / QUALITY OF LIFE
  • FAR GREATER SUBJECTIVE WELL-BEING
FOLLOWING DR. FRANK’S “NO-AGING” DIET
After learning about the many health benefits of dietary nucleic acids, my family immediately began consuming sardines on a daily basis. We felt and saw the difference! We noticed we had greater energy levels, breathed easier (especially noticeable when exercising), greater tolerance to cold temperatures, and even smoother skin. Even our dogs gained these benefits!
I was somewhat surprised at these noticeable effects on health since for many years we had already been consuming a healthy diet of organic foods, taking high-quality nutritional supplements, and getting plenty of exercise.
In another book written by Dr. Frank, Nucleic Acid Nutrition and Therapy (1977), he notably states that nucleic acids [RNA and DNA] are “essential nutrients of human beings,” as distinct from non-essential, accessory nutrients. He considered nucleic acids and nucleotides an essential dietary category, i.e., as being nutrients just as essential for humans as vitamins, minerals, proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids.
Dr. Frank acknowledged the body’s capacity to synthesize some nucleic acids, yet cited the marked improvements in degenerative conditions as the clearest evidence for nucleic acids as essential nutrients. In particular, he noted the health effects resulting from even relatively small intakes of nucleic acids (e.g., energizing effects, anti-anoxia effects, rejuvenation, greater vitality, etc). Dr. Frank found he could not obtain such improvements in his subjects by increasing only the intake of vitamins, minerals, proteins, or other essential nutrients.
Dr. Frank asserts: “Nucleic acids are an essential nutrient in our daily diets, and…optimal health and reduced aging are clearly related to their intake, more than to any other nutrient. Nucleic acids in our diets are of paramount importance for the repairing of molecular and gross tissue degeneration, and for combatting the process of aging by simple, effective and essentially non-toxic, natural means.”
DEVELOPING REJUVENATE!™ SUPERFOOD
I was absolutely impressed by the results we were observing, and by what Dr. Frank had discovered in his many experiments on humans and animals. But then things got more interesting! Because shortly thereafter, I read another book on chlorella by Dr. Jensen, Chlorella: Gem of the Orient (1987). Chlorella is single-cell freshwater algae with an RNA content in the range of 5–15%. Chlorella was being used extensively in Japan as a cure for virtually any illness.
My thoughts soon turned to developing a vegetable-based nutritional product that was a high-RNA superfood with nutrients that would support the body’s use of and production of  nucleic acids. Soon, I was reading every book written by Dr. Frank (a great challenge and learning experience in itself!) in order to gain a deeper understanding of what was required by the body in order to produce and utilize RNA. Piece by piece, the the elements of the formula fell into place. In January 2007, Rejuvenate!™ was ready. Here’s what Rejuvenate!™ contains:
Immune Strengthening using Medicinal Mushrooms
Dr. Hank Liers, PhDA healthy immune system is required for rejuvenation. Yet, often it is the immune system itself that requires rejuvenating to bring it to a level where it can better support rejuvenation of the entire body. Our Rejuvenation Program therefore builds the immune system and includes supplement recommendations and supporting protocols to accomplish that goal. The most important immune building supplement we recommend is Immune-Assist™, a mushroom complex of six medicinal mushrooms containing polysaccharides that provide a wide range of health benefits.
Other important immune building supplements included in HPDI’s Master Rejuvenation program are echinacea, garlic, olive leaf extract, and astragalus. We will discuss immune strengthening using medicinal mushrooms and Immune-Assist™ in this article. Additional articles (forthcoming) will be dedicated to the other immune-building supplements.
Medicinal Mushrooms Extracts: One of the Most Powerful Immune Modulators
Recent scientific research has shown that medicinal mushrooms grown on vegetable sources (such as millet, rice bran, buckwheat, barley, etc.) enzymatically activate a process whereby complex cross-linked polysaccharides from the vegetable sources are converted to biologically active immunomodulators (also known as biological response modifiers). As you will see from the discussion below, the polysaccharides produced by this process are effective and safe immune stimulants.
shrooms1
Medicinal mushroom research has focused on discovering compounds that can positively or negatively modulate the biological response of immune cells. Certain mushroom derived-glucans and polysaccharide-bound proteins have been shown to act as immunomodulators or biological response modifiers (BRMs). A variety of therapeutic effects often occur when these mushroom-derived polymers interact with the immune system to upregulate or downregulate specific aspects of the responses of the host. Whether certain compounds enhance or suppress immune responses can depend on a number of factors including dosage, route of administration, timing and frequency of administration, mechanism of action, or the site of activity.
Many mushroom-derived polysaccharides appear to fit the accepted criteria for BRM compounds. They cause no harm and place no additional stress on the body, they assist the body to adapt to the various environmental and psychological stresses, and they have a non-specific action on the body, supporting all the major systems, including nervous, hormonal, and immune systems, as well as regulatory functions.
The anti-tumor polysaccharides isolated from mushrooms (fruit-body, submerged, cultured mycelial biomass or liquid culture broth) are either water-soluble β-D-glucans, β-D-glucans with heterosaccharide chains of xylose, mannose, galactose, or uronic acid or β-D-glucan-protein complexes – proteoglycans.
While the role of medicinal mushrooms in immunomodulation and anti-cancer activities represents the central theme of much of the conducted research, it is pertinent to observe that many of the medicinal mushrooms have been highly valued for other medicinal properties including hypercholesterolemia, high blood pressure, diabetes, anti-viral, anti-bacteria, and antioxidant and free radical scavenging.
Mushroom-Derived β-glucans are Safe
The safety criteria for mushroom-derived β-glucans have been exhaustively carried out in pre-clinical experiments. Acute, subacute, and chronic toxicity tests have been carried out together with administration during pregnancy and lactation with no adverse effects. There were no anaphylactic reactions and no effects in mutagenicity and haemolysis tests, blood coagulation and a wide range of other regulatory tests.
There was no evidence of genotoxicity. Similar results have been obtained with other β-glucans. When applied to humans in Phase 1 clinical tests, the β-glucans demonstrate remarkably few adverse clinical reactions.
Therapeutic Properties of Medicinal Mushrooms
In the 2001 report Medicinal Mushrooms: Their Therapeutic Properties and Current Medical Usage with Special Emphasis on Cancer Treatments, a wide variety of mushroom polysaccharides, including Lentinan (from L. edodes), Schizophyllan (from S. commune), PSK and PSP (from Trametes versicolor), and Grifron-D (from the Maitake mushroom G. frondosa) and others are described, and their properties are shown to satisfy the criteria for BRMs.
Many of these mushroom-derived polymers potentiate the host’s innate (non-specific) and acquired (specific) immune responses in a similar manner, where they activate many kinds of immune cells that are vitally important for the maintenance of homeostasis. Key innate responses that are stimulated by these mushroom derived-β-glucans or polysaccharide-protein complexes include host T-cells (such as cytotoxic macrophages, monocytes, neutrophils, natural killer cells, and dendritic cells) and chemical messengers (cytokines such as interleukins, interferon and colony stimulating factors) that trigger complement and acute phase responses.
Moreover, mushroom polysaccharides or polysaccharide-protein complexes are considered as multi-cytokine inducers that are able to induce gene expression of various immunomodulatory cytokines and cytokine receptors. In addition, acquired responses are also enlisted, where lymphocytes that govern antibody production (B cells) and cell-mediated cytotoxicity (T-cells) are stimulated. While the immune system is shrouded in tremendous complexity, our current understanding shows that it is regulated in an orchestrated dynamic manner.
Mushroom-derived polysaccharides have shown anti-tumour activities in both pre-clinical models and in clinical trials. Although the mechanism of their anti-tumour action is still not completely clear, Lentinan, Schizophyllan, PSP, PSK and other mushroom polysaccharides appear to mediate their anti-tumour activity by activation or augmentation of the host’s immune system (via stimulated cytotoxic macrophages, cytotoxic T-cells and antibody-mediated cytoxicity of targeted cancer cells), rather than direct cytotoxicity.
Thus, both cell-mediated immune responses against the target T-cells initiated by macrophage-lymphocyte interactions and cytoxicity induced by antibodies to target T-cells are believed to contribute to the elimination of targeted tumour cells. Recent evidence suggests that several mushroom polysaccharides may also possess cytotoxic properties. Grifron-D from G.fondosa mushroom was reported to induce apoptosis (programmed cell death) in human prostate cancer cell-lines.
IMMUNE-ASSIST™ Incorporates Polysaccharide Extracts from Six Organically Grown Medicinal Mushrooms
In China, Japan, Korea, and more recently in the US, hundreds of mushroom species have been studied during the past 20 years. Extracts from most of the medicinal mushrooms show a common property of enhancing immune function by modulating cell-mediated immunity. Simply put, such mushroom extracts seem to turn on cells in the immune system, which appear to have significant disease-fighting properties. In fact, three different anticancer drugs extracted from mushrooms have been approved by the Japanese equivalent of FDA (that is, the Japanese Health and Welfare Ministry). These three are lentinan, derived from shiitake; PSK, derived from coriolus versicolor; and schizophyllan, derived from suehirotake.
Based upon a a large amount of research, a US-based company has formulated Immune-Assist™ , which includes a combination of more than 200 different polysaccharides, derived from the enzymatic breakdown of complex organic plant material from six different species of medicinal mushrooms. These include Agaricus blazei, Cordyceps sinensis hybrid, Lentinula edodes(shiitake), Grifola frondosa (maitake), Ganoderma lucidum (reshi), and Coriolus versicolor.
Immune-Assist™ contains simple polysaccharides similar to many other products on the market, but it also contains much more complex polysaccharides like the cross-linked beta mannans and beta-glucans, as well as hetero-polysaccharides which combine both alpha- and beta-bound monosaccharides into the same molecule. This is the reason that Immune-Assist™ shows such a greater range of immuno-modulation bioactivity than other bran-based supplements. Included among the important substances in Immune-Assist™ are Arabinoxylane, Lentinan, Grifolan (Dr. Nanba’s original Maitake D-Fraction), PSK and PSP, and Active Hemicellulose Correlated Compound (AHCC).
Below we provide a brief summary of the research and clinical studies for each of the mushrooms contained in Immune-Assist™:
Shiitake is now the most popular and most cultivated exotic mushroom in the world. In China, shiitake has a history that dates back to the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644 ACE). The mushroom was used not only as a food but was taken as a remedy for upper respiratory diseases, poor blood circulation, liver trouble, exhaustion and weakness, and to boost chi, or life energy.  It was also believed to prevent premature aging.  Today the shiitake is recognized for its antitumor action and has been extensively researched in regard to its immunologic activity. The initial antitumor research was performed in 1969 by Tetsuro Ikekawa at Purdue University, along with colleagues at the National Cancer Center Research Institute in Tokyo. The researchers found that water extracts of shiitake produced high rates of tumor inhibition in mice (72–92%). Ikekawa later identified a polysaccharide in shiitake called lentinan as having powerful antitumor activity.
Coriolus (or Trametesversicolor is the most thoroughly clinically researched mushroom. An extract of Coriolus versicolor known as PSK is sold in Europe and Japan. It is the best-selling cancer drug in the world and recently accounted for more than 25% of Japan’s total national expenditure for anticancer agents. In addition to possessing many different antitumor properties, it is also an immunostimulant; demonstrates anti-viral activity; enhances T-cell proliferation; and has been shown to improve both disease-free and survival rates in cancer patients. In an 8-year clinical test of breast cancer patients, and in another 5-year study, it was shown that the polysaccharide compounds contained within Coriolus versicolor work particularly well as an adjuvant for cancer therapies, exhibiting diverse biological activities.
Maitake may be even more potent than any of the other mushrooms previously studied. This legendary giant mushroom has been studied for its anticancer, anti-diabetic, anti-hypertensive and anti-hyperlipemic effects since the mid-1980s. Its anti-HIV activity in vitro was demonstrated in tests conducted by the Japan Institute of Health and the US National Cancer Institute in early 1992. Among various extracts obtained from the Maitake mushroom, a specific extracted fraction named Maitake D-fraction is the active constituent. This extract contains beta-1, 3-glucans and beta-1, 6-glucans protein-bound polysaccharides. It has demonstrated remarkable antitumor activity by activating the immune system through oral administration.
The Chinese people have long used Cordyceps sinensis to promote overall good health, and modern research indicates that it does indeed support liver, kidney, heart, and immune system function. Cordyceps sinensis has been used to protect the bone marrow and digestive systems of mice from whole body irradiation. One experiment noted that Cordyceps may protect the liver from damage. An experiment with mice indicated the mushroom may have an anti-depressant effect. Researchers have observed that Cordyceps has a hypoglycemic effect and may be beneficial for people with insulin resistance. Cordyceps mushroom extracts have been shown to stimulate the number of T helper cells, prolong the survival of lymphocytes, enhance TNF-alpha and interleukin 1 production, and increase the activity of natural killer cells. One study indicates that cordyceps can stimulate progesterone production in animal cells. Another study has shown that cordyceps may be effective against tumor cells by down-regulating MHC class II antigen expression. In addition, historical use data suggests that cordyceps can cause a reduction of cyclosporin and aminoglycoside-induced renal toxicity.
Reishi possess anti-tumor, immunomodulary, and immunotherapeutic activities, supported by studies on polysaccharides, terpene, and other bioactive compounds isolated from fruiting bodies and mycelia of this fungus. It has also been found to inhibit platelet aggregation, and to lower blood pressure (via inhibition of angiotensin-converting enzyme), cholesterol and blood sugar. Laboratory studies have shown anti-neoplastic effects of fungal extracts or isolated compounds against some types of cancer. In an animal model, Reishi has been reported to prevent cancer metastasis, with potency comparable to Lentinan from shiitake mushrooms. The mechanisms by which Reishi affect cancer may target different stages of cancer development include: 1) inhibition of angiogenesis (formation of new, tumor-induced blood vessels created to supply nutrients to the tumor) mediated by cytokines, 2) cytotoxicity, 3) inhibition of migration of the cancer cells and metastasis, and 4) inducing and enhancing apoptosis of tumor cells. Besides effects on mammalian physiology, Reishiis reported to have anti-bacterial and anti-viral activities. Reishi is reported to exhibit direct anti-viral effects with the following viruses: HSV-1, HSV-2, and influenza.
Agaricus blazei is an edible mushroom native to Brazil and cultivated in Japan and the USA for its medicinal uses. It has been used to treat arteriosclerosis, hepatitis, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, dermatitis, and cancer. In vitro experiments and studies done in mice have shown that Agaricus has immunomodulatory, antitumor, and antimutagenic properties. The polysaccharides and anti-angiogenic compounds present in Agaricus are thought to be responsible for its antitumor properties. Such effects are believed to be exerted by immunopotentiation or direct inhibition of angiogenesis. A recent randomized study showed that oral administration of Agaricus extract improved the natural killer cell activity and quality of life in gynecological cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Agaricus was also shown to have antidiabetic effects in vitro and in animal studies. In addition, results from a study done in human subjects with type 2 diabetes suggest benefits of Agaricus extract in improving insulin resistance, and a pilot study indicates that Agaricus extract may reduce weight, BMI, body fat, and serum glucose and cholesterol levels in healthy individuals.
AHCC as a Component of Immune-Assist™ Daily Formula
AHCC is produced by from the enzymatic action of vegetable sources with mycelial extracts from several different mushrooms. There is about four times more AHCC in each dose of Immune-Assist™ than there is in other AHCC products on the market.
AHCC is a food substance that contains a broad range of polysaccharides. It is believed that a special polysaccharide with a molecular weight of about 5,000 and an alpha 1,4 glucan linkage in this mushroom extract is primarily responsible for the powerful immune enhancing effects on natural killer cells. A heavier polysaccharide in the extract appears to have a powerful stimulating effect on macrophages which, in turn, further stimulates the immune system including a number of cytokines (Interleukin-2, Interleukin-12, Tumor Necrosis Factor [TNF], and Interferon).  Furthermore, some research has indicated that components of AHCC may have direct cytotoxic effects on cancer cells and prevent metastases from occurring.
Natural Killer Cells
The human immune system is comprised of more than 130 subsets of white blood cells. Natural Killer (NK) cells make up roughly 15% of all human white blood cells. They provide the first line of defense for dealing with any form of invasion to the body. Each NK cell contains several small granules that act as chemical destroyers. Once an NK cell has recognized a cancer cell, for example, it attaches itself to the cell’s outer membrane and injects these granules directly into the interior of the cell. The granules then destroy the cancer cell within five minutes. The undamaged NK cell then moves on to other cancer cells and repeats the process. When the immune system is particularly strong, active NK cells will often take on more than one cancer cells or other infected cells at the same time.
NK Cell Activity, Not Number, Determines Immune System Strength
Unlike other white blood cells, inadequate numbers of NK cells are very rarely a problem. Instead, it is the activity of the cells that generally determines whether one is sick or healthy. As long as the NK cells are active, everything remains under control. If NK cells lose their ability to either recognize or destroy the invader, however, the situation can deteriorate rapidly. In AIDS and cancer patients, NK cell activity is probably the primary criteria for estimating the chances of survival. It’s commonly accepted that when NK cells cease to function, the end is near.
In addition, research has now confirmed that individuals with low NK cell activity are significantly more susceptible to autoimmune diseases, chronic fatigue syndrome, viral infections and the development of cancerous tumors.
Doctors can test NK cell activity with a test called the NK cell function test. Basically, a blood sample is taken from the patient and placed in a vial containing live tumor cells. After four hours, a count is taken to determine what percentage of the cancer cells have been destroyed by the NK cells. The higher the percentage, the more active the cells. This test is referred to as the 4 hour Chromium-release assay. Your doctor can order the test from Immune Sciences Lab in Beverly Hills, CA at 310-657-1077.
How IMMUNE-ASSIST™ Increases NK Cell Activity and Immunity
The capacity of Immune-Assist™ to boost NK activity and overall immunity appears to stem from the following:
1) Immune-Assist™ increases the number of explosive granules in NK cells. The more granules an NK cell carries, the more cancer and virus-infected cells it can destroy,
2) Oral ingestion of Immune-Assist™ can increase NK activity as much as 300% (or even higher),
3) It increases interferon (IFN) levels. Interferon is another potent compound produced by the body that both inhibits the replication of viruses and other parasites and increases NK cell activity,
4) Immune-Assist™ increases the formation of Tumor Necrosis Factors (TNFs). TNFs are a group of proteins that help destroy cancer cells,
5) It increases number and the activity of other lymphocytes, especially T-cells (up to 200%) and macrophages,
6) It stimulates cytokine (IL-2, IL-12, TNF, and IFN) production, which stimulates immune function.
Applications for Immune-Assist™
Applications for Immune Assist™ include: 1) recurrent infections, such as colds, flu, and parasites, 2) gum disease, 3) heart disease, 4) peptic ulcer, 5) cancers, 6) slow healing wounds, 7) digestive problems, 8) AIDS, 9) hepatitis, 10) multiple sclerosis, and 11) autoimmune illnesses. Immune Assist™ has not exhibited side effects and is completely non-toxic even after years of use at therapeutic levels.
Owing to its tremendous immune enhancing effects, Immune-Assist™ is likely to be of significant benefit to individuals suffering from a wide range of conditions. Impaired immunity is a result of a wide range of poor lifestyle habits including high stress levels, exposure to high levels of toxins, and poor nutritional status.  As such individuals in the following categories could also benefit from Immune Assist™:
  • Individuals who constantly work with paint (artists, house painters, etc)
  • Chemical and refinery workers and others exposed to heavy doses of toxic chemicals
  • Heavy smokers
  • Heavy drinkers
  • Individuals with gum disease
  • Individuals with peptic ulcers
  • Individuals with prostate infections
  • Individuals with chronic fatigue syndrome
  • Individuals with diabetes
  • Individuals with heart disease
  • Individuals experiencing autoimmune deficiencies (multiple sclerosis, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis)
  • Individuals with recurrent infections, such as colds, flu, yeast, and parasites
  • Individuals whose families exhibit a significant history of cancer
  • Individuals with slow healing wounds
Immune-Assist™ Dosages
Immune AssistThe dosages used in studies are scientifically based on repeated NK cell activity tests. As such, they are consistent and easy to follow. They fall into two types:
1) For cancer, HIV or other life-threatening condition, take three grams per day for two-to-four weeks, then one gram per day until the problem is resolved. Some people continue to take the maintenance dosage even after the problem has been resolved, while others stop taking it and resume if the problem returns. In rare cases taking as much as six grams daily was necessary.
2) As a form of prevention take one gram per day.
In all of the studies, it has been found that taking 3 grams a day resulted in a dramatic increase in NK cell activity within one to two weeks. At the lower dosage of only one gram per day, the same activity wasn’t reached until about four weeks. Thus, the initial heavy doses of three grams per day.  Even after the dosage is dropped back to one gram per day, NK cell activity will continue to increase.  It is best to take the Immune-Assist™ capsules with meals in divided doses.  For example, when taking three grams per day (which works out to six 500 mg capsules), two capsules can be taken with each meal. When you reduce the dosage down to one gram a day (two capsules), you can take one capsule at breakfast and one at dinner.
Conclusion
The importance of a strong, adaptable immune system cannot be underestimated, especially in the context of building (or rebuilding) health and for successful rejuvenation. While there are other useful immune building supplements (e.g., echinacea, garlic, olive leaf extract), Immune Assist™ is highly effective for boosting immunity as part of a complete program for rejuvenation.
Rejuvenation Program Part Nine: Acupuncture & Traditional Chinese Medicine
Stefanie Lischer Liers LAcThe HPDI Rejuvenation Program provides practices, protocols, and recommendations proven over 26 years. It is a complete program to rejuvenate, regenerate, and boost vitality to body, mind, and spirit. It is especially helpful for those who want to restore health. This article discusses the role of acupuncture within the HPDI Master Rejuvenation Program.
The Rejuvenation program emphasizes establishing basic nutrition, foundational supplement formulas, and high-RNA Rejuvenate!™ superfoods and other sources of dietary nucleic acids. The program rests on six elements: 1) Attitude/Commitment, 2) Detoxification, 3) Preventing Toxicity, 4) Health Building Nutrition, 5) Building Powerful Immunity, and 6) Supporting Protocols.
The six foundational elements remain powerful individually, but act synergistically when combined to support optimal health. The results are greatly improved capabilities for your body to heal, regenerate, rejuvenate, and restore its vitality.
In Part Eight of the Rejuvenation Program series, we discussed the Massage Program (part three of four sub-articles on supporting protocols), which is an important supporting protocol in the Master Rejuvenation Program.
SUPPORTING PROTOCOLS FOR REJUVENATION
In this article, we present another supporting protocol in our Master Rejuvenation Program: the Acupuncture Program. We include acupuncture in our Rejuvenation Program because it offers proven modalities for healing based in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). These modalities include acupuncture, but  encompass an entire system of medicine designed to maintain balance for mind, body, emotions, and spirit through the use of specific recommendations for diet, exercise, herbs, meditation, and more.
acupuncture program
TCM is a complete system that is designed to promote the flow of life energy (Qi) and to remove blockages that adversely affect its flow. It is the unrestricted, yet balanced flow of energy that promotes harmony in the body, and thereby helps create health. Like massage, acupuncture and other TCM modalities can improve the flow of energy, blood (circulation), and lymph, and therefore prevent or treat problems relating to blockage, statis, or lack of proper flow.
THE ACUPUNCTURE PROGRAM
Acupuncture involves tapping into energetic meridians or pathways in the body using needles. There are 12 primary meridians and 8 extra meridians that are categorized according to yin (cool, internal, passive, etc.) and yang (hot, external, active, etc.).
While imbalances in the yin organs potentially result in hot, irritable, dry symptoms, imbalances in yang organs potentially result in cold, weak, pale symptoms. (One common example of a yin deficiency of the kidneys is menopause, during which a woman can experience feelings of heat, dryness, difficulty sleeping, or irritability.)
Traditional Chinese Medicine has been practiced in China for around 5,000 years. It involves not just acupuncture, but also Qi Gong (moving meditation), Tui Na (massage), and herbal and dietary prescriptions for bodily constitution and seasons.
One basic premise is that it is the individual’s responsibility to keep themselves in balance through the use of food and plants as daily medicine, and the practice of Qi Gong or Tai Ji. The practitioner’s job is to educate the patient and assist when needed using acupuncture and other methods.
According to Chinese Medicine, aging happens as we lose Qi (or Energy) and Jing (or Essence) in the body. Western lifestyles can contribute to the loss of Qi and Jing. Methods to conserve essence and energy involve the “Four Pillars of Health”:
  • Proper Eating: Moderate amounts of foods for a person’s constitution and the season.
  • Proper Rest: Resting when tired and not pushing oneself when fatigued.
  • Proper Thoughts and Emotions: Positive thoughts and meditation, and avoiding extremes of emotion.
  • Proper Exercise: Daily moderate exercise including brisk walks and avoiding strenuous daily exercise.
Practicing Qi Gong is an important way to replenish Jing/Essence after it has been spent. This involves both movement and visualization. For example, imagining light coming in to fill the lower part of your abdomen as you ‘Gather the Qi’ with your arms. Acupuncturists can recommend certain movements to keep energy flowing along a meridian.
Foods and herbs are an important part of staying well and maintaining Qi and Essence. In China, eating a balance of the five flavors (sweet, salty, sour, bitter, acrid) is important at every meal. Depending on the season and your body constitution, you may need more of one flavor than another. For example, bitter foods are recommended in summer because they are cooling and cleansing. But if you are feeling deficient and weak, these may not be the proper foods for your constitution. In cooler winter weather, foods that are more warming/nourishing or acrid are generally more appropriate. This is one reason why consuming soups with root vegetables, hot peppers, and small amounts of red meat can be so satisfying during winter months.
How can acupuncture benefit you? If you experience symptoms indicating that your body is out of balance, then acupuncture can help to alleviate those symptoms without the need for pharmaceuticals. The number of sessions it takes to resolve an issue depends on the amount of time you have been out of balance. For example, if you have back pain that began yesterday, you may feel relief after one session. However, if your back pain has persisted for years, then it may take weeks or months to return to balance, and you may also require treatment with herbs.
Acupuncture is not just for musculoskeletal issues. It can be used to treat many health issues, either alone or in conjunction with western medical modalities. One of the advantages of acupuncture (and TCM generally) is that it works well with other elements (including Supporting Protocols) in our Rejuvenation Program. That is, the methods used are intended to help create health by nourishing the body, removing blockages (and/or toxins), promoting flow (i.e., energy, blood, lymph, etc.), and supporting health holistically (mind, body, and spirit).
Even if you are feeling pretty well balanced, acupuncture can help during the change of the seasons to keep you in balance, in much the same way that regular maintenance on your car helps prevent problems.
Remember, acupuncture is most effective when you feel a resonance with your practitioner. Your results will be best when you can be fully relaxed with someone who you trust and feel good about.
