Fred Liers PhD hydrogen supplements drinks H2I love hydrogen supplements. So should you. Since starting my morning—and often afternoon—routine of making hydrogen drinks in the kitchen, I have come to appreciate the surge of energy lasting many hours, as well as a host of other benefits.

Most of all, I am amazed how easy hydrogen supplements are to use considering how much they do for you, and how well they complement the supplements I already take—seeming to make them all more effective.

I typically use one or two effervescing Active H2 Ultra tablets or Vital Reaction tablets in 8–16 ounces of water. Then I like to open one Megahydrate capsule directly in the effervescing water. I wait about 90 seconds to let the tablets stop “fizzing” and then I drink immediately. Allowing the drink to sit for a few minutes is okay, but the sooner you drink it, the higher the concentration of hydrogen.

Hydrogen supplements are among the newer, cutting-edge nutritional formulas available to support optimal health. More than 500 scientific articles now support the therapeutic potential hydrogen for essentially every organ system and in 150 human disease models, according to the non-profit Molecular Hydrogen Foundation. In fact, hydrogen is rapidly incorporated into medicine, sports medicine, peak performance, elite fitness, and more.

Hydrogen is an antioxidant. It is also an extremely small molecule that can penetrate even the tiniest cellular compartments. This helps explain how hydrogen works to offer free-radical defense throughout the entire body.

The medical and scientific literature is clear. Hydrogen’s modes of action:

  • H2 reduces oxidative stress as a selective antioxidant and by maintaining homeostatic levels of glutathione, superoxide dismutase, catalase, etc.
  • H2, like other gaseous signaling molecules (i.e. NO, CO, H2S), appears to have cell signal-modulating activity affording it with anti-inflammatory, anti-obesity, and anti-allergy benefits.

We include hydrogen supplements in HPDI’s system of Foundational Supplements. In fact, hydrogen formulas as just one of six foundational supplements. We consider hydrogen a “secondary” foundational supplement usually to be added to a supplement regimen after the four primary ones: multivitamins, antioxidant & vitamin C formulas, essential fatty acids, and superfoods high in dietary nucleic acids (i.e., Rejuvenate! superfoods).

The scientific literature discusses the use of molecular hydrogen for many clinical applications, including:

• Metabolic Syndrome including diabetes, hyperlipidemia, arteriosclerosis, hypertension, and obesity

• Ischemia/reperfusion injuries, including cerebral and myocardial infarctions, organ transplants, post-cardiac arrest

• Neuroprotection, including applications for dementia, Parkinson’s disease, depression, and anesthesia

• Inflammation, including applications for polymicrobial sepsis, rheumatoid arthritis, wound healing, and bowel diseases

• Mitochondrial diseases

• Hemodialysis and ventilation

• Aging, including cognitive decline

• Exercise, including applications for fatigue, lactic acid, recovery, and oxidative stress related to heavy exercise

Side effects of cancer therapies, including radiotherapy and chemotherapy

• Many other benefits

According to the Molecular Hydrogen Foundation, there are three ways molecular hydrogen exerts positive health effects.

1. Molecular hydrogen easily diffuses into subcellular compartments where it scavenges cytotoxic oxygen radicals, thereby protecting DNA, RNA, and proteins against oxidative stress.

2. Molecular hydrogen triggers activation or upregulation of additional antioxidant enzymes (e.g., glutathione, superoxide dismutase, catalase, and others) and/or cytoprotective proteins of the body.

3. Molecular hydrogen may be a novel signaling molecule that alters cell signaling, cell metabolism, and gene expression. This may explain its apparent anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, and anti-apoptotic (or anti-cell death) effects.

Molecular hydrogen exhibits great safety, and it is regarded as safe for use in the body. It is shown no toxicity even in high concentrations.

Safety standards have long been established for high concentrations of hydrogen for inhalation largely because of the history of high-pressure H2 gas used in deep-water diving gas mixtures for preventing decompression sickness.

Notably, H2 gas combusts only at temperatures higher than 527 °C, and it explodes by chain reaction with oxygen (O2) only in the range of H2 concentration (4–75%, vol/vol).

Molecular hydrogen is used for medical applications safely by several ingestion methods including inhalation of 1–4% hydrogen gas, for example, which exhibits great effectiveness. All these factors mean that hydrogen is safe, easy-to-use, and effective for therapeutic purposes.

vital reaction hydrogen supplements

Vital Reaction hydrogen supplement (60 tablets).

According to the Molecular Hydrogen Foundation, drinking H2-rich water is the easiest, and often the most effective, method for obtaining hydrogen.

Drinking hydrogen-infused water is easy to do, and convenient as you can drink it at home or while traveling. Effective hydrogen products HPDI carries include Vital Reaction tablets, Active H2 tablets, and Megahydrate capsules.

As noted, I make one or two hydrogen drinks daily, first in the morning and then often again in the afternoon. I drink them on an empty stomach. I enjoy a significant energy boost, which helps power me through my day. I gain other benefits, including improved athletic performance, noticeably faster recovery from exercise, and an overall greater sense of well-being.

I highly recommend you try hydrogen supplements for yourself, and then consider them for your clients or patients. Our experience is that most people are pleasantly surprised by the results they get from hydrogen supplements, especially if they have a need for exceptional free-radical defense, or stand to benefit from the proven effects hydrogen uniquely provides (see list above).

Once you try hydrogen, you will want to continue taking it because the benefits are so significant. Let the power of hydrogen starting working for you on a daily basis!

hydration water crystal energy

Dr Hank Liers PhD hydration crystal energyIn this article, my goal is to provide a more in-depth understanding of the importance of water and hydration to human health. In my recent research on these subjects, it became clear that our common understanding of water is inadequate to provide us with the knowledge of how we may significantly improve our health using water in ways that can vastly improve the hydration and health of our tissues and cells.

To accomplish my goal, it is important to gain a better understanding of the fourth state of water and how the water in our bodies are primarily in this state. A relatively short video by Dr. Gerald Pollack provides significant illumination on this subject. His book The Fourth Phase of Water: Beyond Solid, Liquid, and Vapor is recommended for those wishing to study in greater depth on this topic.

The fact is that most of the water in the human body exists in this fourth or “structured” state. Furthermore, Dr. Pollack points out that water surrounding colloidal particles such as silica colloids is also in this structured state. Dr. Patrick Flanagan has applied this understanding along with a method of producing nanometer sized silica colloids to enable greater hydration of the body, enhanced absorption of nutritional ingredients into cells, and improved cellular detoxification. Dr. Flanagan has incorporated these elements into his Crystal Energy® product.

To provide quantification of the benefits of Crystal Energy, I have provided a somewhat simplified version of an article titled: Quantitative Analysis of Membrane Diffusion Kinetics and Surface Tension Differentiation by a Colloidal Silicate Minerals by Cory J. Stephanson, PhD and G. Patrick Flanagan, MD, PhD. For those wishing a more complete understanding of hydration and Crystal Energy, please read their full article.

Water (H2O) has a profound effect on our lives. The surface of the earth is 75% covered by water. The human body is about 67% water by weight and because of its low molecular weight 99% of the molecules in the human body are H2O. According to chemistry books there are three states of water solid (ice), liquid, and gas (vapor).

hydration water states

However, deeper studies of water in more recent years have revealed a fourth state of water called by various names such as exclusion zone (EZ) water, structured water, fourth phase of water, and crystalline water. One of the primary researchers of water is Dr. Gerald Pollack from the University of Washington. Dr. Pollack’s TED talk included below (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-T7tCMUDXU) gives us a broad view of the properties of the fourth state of water. It is highly recommended that you view this video as the facts revealed are not commonly known, but are profoundly important in our lives!

The issues of hydration of the human body are highly important. With regards to physiological and biological implications, significance and impact, no nutritional substance is equal to or greater than the importance of water. Water maintains multifaceted uses biologically as a solvent, catalyst, and carrier for other reactions and compounds. The interaction of water and biological fluids is a profound topic that bears significant nutritional consideration. Changes in physical rheology of water can have a profound effect on the amount of materials that water can carry to and from the interior of cells.

With aging, the body’s mechanisms of water balance are disturbed, increasing the risk of dehydration (and loss of hydration) among the elderly. Dehydration is indeed the most common fluid disorder among older persons, and it can have considerable clinical impact. It is estimated that between the ages of 30 and 70 years old the body loses about 15% of its capacity to retain water.

Reasons for the loss of capacity to retain water include: 1) The elderly often experience reduced thirst sensation which leads to decreased fluid consumption, especially following water deprivation, 2) As a consequence of aging, renal water conservation is impaired. Aged kidneys are less able to concentrate urine, and thereby to retain water during water deprivation, and 3) Aging is associated with limitations such as reduced swallowing capacity, reduced mobility, or comprehension and communication disorders, which can lead to insufficient fluid intake, 4) Disease-related factors, such as fever, diabetes, or incontinence can increase water losses, and 5) Dehydration may also be caused by environmental factors (warm temperature, inadequate knowledge or the lack of time of care workers in institutions contributing to inadequate fluid intake) or iatrogenic factors (medications including laxatives, diuretics or angiotensinconverting enzyme inhibitors, and medical procedures such as those requiring fasting).

The great majority of people do not recognize the absolutely crucial value of drinking the right kind of water for purposes of hydration. When doctors say, “Drink plenty of water or you will become dehydrated,” they are talking about the water around your cells, the intercellular water. However, here we’re talking about cellular hydration, the water inside the cells themselves.

Research in the field of cellular hydration has shown that when the cell swells up, it triggers an anabolic mechanism in the body, which is a healing mechanism. It is accompanied by positive nitrogen balance, protein synthesis, and growth hormone release, equivalent to useful levels even in older people. Cellular hydration also results in a reduction of cell acidity, reduced autoimmune response, increased fat burning, DNA repair, and increased resistance to viruses.

Now when the cells become dehydrated, it triggers a catabolic state accompanied by muscle wasting, cell hypoxia (oxygen starvation), DNA damage, and accelerated aging. As a result the cell becomes more sensitive to free radicals and more susceptible to viruses and autoimmune diseases. Virtually all symptoms of aging are the result of cellular dehydration accompanied by free radical damage. As such, proper hydration is essential for improved health.

Surface tension is an important indicator of the rheology or flow characteristics of water through a living system and across cell membranes. When a drop of liquid is placed on a solid or another secondary liquid, the first liquid either spreads to form a thin, more or less uniform film or remains as a discrete drop. The degree of interaction between the drop and the film is known as wetting. The former behavior is generally described as complete wetting, and the latter as incomplete or partial wetting of the surface.

The external measure of the degree of wetting is the contact angle, i.e., the angle formed between planes tangent to the surfaces of the solid and the liquid at the wetted perimeter. A zero contact angle is the condition for complete wetting of a solid by a liquid (e.g., water on clean glass). This concept is exceptionally important in the discussion of the nutritional aspects of a liquid. To fully discuss the phenomena and details of liquid interaction, it is important to understand the concepts of three terms: surface tension, wetting tension, and wetting angle.

Surface tension is the force that exists between a liquid and the atmosphere it is in. For example, in atmospheric air, a drop of water will bead up on some solid surfaces. It is the surface tension existing between the water and the air that allows this to occur. The drop of water can spread out on another solid surface if the new surface has molecular forces (surface energy) high enough to overcome the water/air surface tension and draw the water flat onto it.

Wetting tension is the maximum liquid surface tension that will spread, rather than bead up, on the film surface. It is a measurable property that estimates a film’s surface energy. Wetting tension is determined by applying different test solutions of increasing surface tensions until one is found that just spreads (wets) the film surface. Units are dynes/cm.

Contact or wetting angle (the angle θ shown in the diagram below) is a measurement of the behavior of pure water in contact with the film surface. The surface energy of the film controls whether the droplet tends to stand up or flatten out. This is quantified by measuring the contact angle of the droplet with the surface. A higher energy film will cause the droplet to be flatter and closer to the surface, which results in a smaller contact angle value.

hydration surface tension water

Ordinary water has a high surface tension, as well as a high wetting angle, which means it has a difficult time wetting the cells within the body. In the body our cell membranes contain a significant amount of phospholipids (fats), which have low surface tension of about 45 dynes/cm. Cells require a surface tension of about the same range for water to wet the cells, thus passing through the cell wall carrying nutrients etc. This concept is the same relationship as the idea that oil and water do not mix. Normal tap water has a surface tension of 73 dynes/cm which is able to suspend the cells in the body, but is not in intimate contact with the surface of the cell, passes through the body, and is not fully utilized by the cells. Higher surface tension water can actually dehydrate cells in which it comes into contact.

The lower the surface tension, the lower the wetting angle and the “wetter” the water becomes. With a lower surface tension and a low wetting angle, cells become fully hydrated and the water is fully and most effectively utilized by the body. By this means, cellular hydration is achieved.

Of direct biological interest, if for any reason nutrients are unable to influx into cells or efflux and remove the toxins from cells, the cells die due to accumulation of their own metabolic waste products.

In order for toxins to leave the cells and nutrients to enter the cells, the cells must be in intimate contact with water. Thus, a low surface tension environment is optimal for cellular health. In fact, it has been demonstrated that an increase of over 64 times nutrient capacity was observed by doubling the speed of fluid flow. Lowering surface tension and wetting angle is directly related to the speed of the fluid across cell membranes.

Hence, while water is one of the most important things we can put into our body, it is only the right kind of water that produces health and longevity. An individual could drink significant volumes of water at 73 dynes/cm, but without the micronutrients in your body to make the conversion to 45 dynes/cm, the body will be dehydrated at a cellular level.

Dehydrated cells metabolize in a catabolic state, which means the body starts utilizing its own tissue for energy production, resulting in degeneration of cellular health and immune response. Over time this process may result in auto immune diseases, such as lupus, MS, Chronic Fatigue, Rheumatoid Arthritis, allergies, and many more degenerative processes.

With this in mind, it is of utmost importance to make sure that the dietary intake of water is in its most useful form, i.e., the form that produces the greatest hydration in the body. There are many compounds and supplements that claim to catalytically increased nutrient absorption, however, most are unable to produce any empirical or other evidence to support those claims.

Crystal Energy hydrationRecent assays evaluating the functionality and efficacy of the nutritional supplement, Crystal Energy®, demonstrate the innate ability of the compound to reduce surface tension and wetting angle, while increasing nutrient absorption through increased fluid speed and diffusion rates. All the while increasing the conductivity and dissolved solids within the solution. Crystal Energy®, is the retail name for Flanagan Microcluster® colloids, that were developed and perfected by Dr. G. Patrick Flanagan.

Dr. Flanagan discovered that anomalous properties that sustain increased longevity and lifespan are the result of a special type of colloidal mineral found in some types of water. This is true of five main areas in the world, including Hunzaland in Pakistan, where larger numbers of people are often known to live past 100 years old while maintaining excellent health. Locals from these areas attribute their longevity to the water they drink. It was the study of these special minerals and ions that led to the development of Crystal Energy® concentrate.

Microcluster minerals, which are found in Crystal Energy, alter the structure of drinking water and reduce the surface tension. These attributes are the keys to the secrets of the Hunza water.

Microcluster minerals are unique in that they have a very high electrical charge (Zeta potential) and are small enough to be easily utilized in the body. Normally the charges on ordinary colloidal minerals have little or no effect on the structure of water. Colloids that are found in dead sea beds and mineral clays have low zeta potential and are too large to be used by a living system.

Zeta potential represents a basic and fundamental Law of Nature. It plays a vital role in all forms of plant and animal life. It is the force that maintains the discreteness of the billions of circulating cells that nourish the organism.

Microcluster minerals consist of elements and combinations of elements which are by definition in the smallest possible size range while still remaining molecules. When Flanagan Microcluster® silica colloids are diluted for drinking, they have such powerful surface energies that they have a profound and significant effect on the water, including decreased surface tension, as measured in dynes per centimeter.

Hunza water has a surface tension value of 58 dynes/cm. Crystal Energy treated water has an even lower surface tension than Hunza water and a greater Zeta potential, providing a more advantageous environment in the organism. Assimilation of nutrients and vitamins from our foods is largely dependant on our body’s ability to wet and process nutrients in the digestive system.

The ability to wet foods depends on the Zeta potential and surface tension of our digestive fluids. Through this mechanism, Crystal Energy demonstrates a significant impact on how nutrients are absorbed into the living system.

To quantify the efficacy and mechanism of Crystal Energy, a series of analytical tests were performed: Diffusion kinetics to determine the fluid speed and nutrient absorption characteristics were measured through the spectrophotometric monitoring of visible light absorbance of a food-grade dye and select vitamins in water, osmotically diffusing across a semi-permeable dialysis membrane. Additional assays were performed following the change in surface tension, conductivity and total dissolved solids with the incremental addition of Crystal Energy to various waters.

Surface Tension Analysis: The surface tension levels of ten different commercially available waters were analyzed before and after treatment with Crystal Energy. Surface tension was monitored by a Du Nouys Ring Model 21 Surface Tensiomat and measured in dynes per centimeter. Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) measurements were made with an Orion model TDS-1 meter and reported in parts per million. Conductivity was determined by a Sper Scientific SP-2 conductivity meter and reported in Siemens.

For each assay, instruments were calibrated and 35.0 mL of analyte water were added to a plastic weigh boat and placed on the surface tensiomat platform. Initial readings were taken with the tensiomat, TDS and conductivity meters. Sequentially one drop of Crystal Energy was added and subsequent readings of surface tension, TDS and conductivity were taken. This protocol was followed for two and four drops as well. Each analysis was performed with six replicates.

The results indicate a mean reduction in surface tension of 35% over the course of the assays. In each replicate and water type, the conductivity increased and the total dissolved solids increased. Increases in conductivity of up to 45% were observed in the treated waters. Increases in total dissolved solids up to 40% were also observed. The decrease in surface tension of 35% places most of the Crystal Energy® treated waters in the range of 43 to 47 dynes/cm clearly demonstrating the decrease in wetting angle and “wetness” of the waters. This range, as previously mentioned, is optimal for biological activity and maximized nutrient assimilation.

The increase in Total Dissolved Solids shows that many minerals in the water are being broken down to their smallest, dissolved states. This is further supported by the increases in conductivity which additionally promote better assimilation, nutrient transfer, and increases in reaction kinetics. Coupled together, the addition of the Crystal Energy creates an environment optimized for increased rates of nutrient assimilation as well as toxin removal from cellular structures!

Diffusion Kinetics: As a means to validate and understand the preceding results and to determine any increase in the speed of the fluids and differences in the diffusion kinetics, a second series of experimentations were executed that monitored the influx of a colored dye and vitamin C through a semi-permeable dialysis membrane over the course of several days. This environment best mimics the human cellular system and the dialysis membranes have similar diffusion properties to that of a human phospholipids cell.

To start the experimentation, 190 mL of analysis water were added to a Pyrex beaker. 10 mL of a 0.5 mg/mL solution of Red #5 food coloring and a 0.5 mg/mL vitamin C solution in their respective analysis waters were added to the 190 mL beaker. 10 mL of the analysis water were added to a wetted and tied 2 cm diameter dialysis tube and suspended in the solution. Treated waters were conditioned with 10 drops of Flanagan Crystal Energy®.

Readings were taken with a spectrophotometer initially and at the following intervals: 10 minutes, 20 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour, 4 hours, 24 hours and 48 hours. Spectra were taken from 340 to 700 nm and were blanked against the respective analysis water. Data were collected at 350 and 523 nm for the vitamin C and red #5 dye, respectively. Controls using tap, spring and distilled water and with both food coloring only and food coloring with vitamin c were used to verify the adsorption and quantification consistency of the vitamin c in solution.

The absorbance data (diffusion rates) showed a significant linear increase up to the 4 hour mark, at which time the diffusion rates slowed significantly and then leveled off by the 24 hour mark and maintained the concentration up to the end of the assay at 48 hours. The mean increase in diffusion rate between a Crystal Energy treated water and a non-treated water was 2.51 +/- 0.15 (Standard Deviation 0.003) times greater. These results clearly indicate a significant increase in fluid speed and nutrient absorption. This equates to an 80 times greater potential for nutrient carrying capacity. The significant increases in diffusion rate compared to controls demonstrate a profound ability of Crystal Energy® to aid in increasing the catalytic nutrient absorption properties of water .

Overall, all of the precision of the data were exceptionally consistent with each other clearly indicating: 1) A mean increase in the rate of nutrient flow across the membrane of 2.5 times over that of non-treated water. 2) A mean decrease in surface tension of 35%. 3) A mean increase in Total Dissolved Solids of 40%, and 4) A mean increase in conductivity of 45%.

All data indicated the requirements needed to optimize an environment for nutrient assimilation through decreased surface tension, wetting angle and increases in Total Dissolved Solids and conductivity were satisfied. Through the controlled monitoring of the diffusion of common water soluble vitamins, Crystal Energy® demonstrates the innate ability to act as a catalyst and aid in the increased rate of absorption in an in vitro, mock-cellular environment. The increase in absorption rates, coupled with its wetting properties, clearly demonstrate the Crystal Energy® conditions water to be highly optimized and essentially prepared for assimilation by the body.

Fred Liers PhD rejuvenate! lemonade

In the early 2000s, not long after I moved to southern Arizona, someone turned me on to a delicious drink we call “chlorella lemonade.” That person undoubtedly was my father, Dr. Hank Liers. At the time, he was into putting chlorella into different foods and drinks with an eye toward improving nutritional value. He still tinkers that way. In any event, that’s how I became enamored with chlorella lemonade. I’ve drunk it for more than a decade.

Fresh lemonade itself is a great thirst-quenching drink. Adding chlorella to lemonade improves its nutritional profile, adds significant detoxifying and healing characteristics, and makes it essentially a hydrating, alkalizing “green” drink. All without sacrificing taste. That is to say, it won’t be a deal breaker (for most people) when it comes to flavor, or texture for that matter.

While taste is a matter of opinion, the health-building characteristics of chlorella are indisputable. That doesn’t mean I never make straight-up lemonade. But I’m far more desirous of creating fresh, custom lemonade drinks using superfoods, including chlorella.

Indeed, one of my favorite drinks is a great-tasting chlorella lemonade made with fresh-squeezed organic lemons, organic grade B maple syrup, chlorella (1–3 teaspoons), and perhaps a pinch of cayenne. That’s a great basic recipe.

Over the years, we’ve created different versions of the basic recipe. Some ingredients include fresh limes, fresh hot peppers (including habanero and chiletepin peppers, blackstrap molasses, chia seeds, and chlorella, of course.

In fact, when I think of all the different versions of lemonade we’ve created, the single ingredient that sticks in my mind is chlorella. I simply love chlorella lemonade. It even tastes great to me without any maple syrup or cayenne pepper. Especially on hot summer days.

My days of drinking chlorella lemonade are far from over. But I’ve come to favor a unique kind of superfood lemonade. It’s called “Rejuvenate! Lemonade.”

About seven years ago (in 2007), HPDI launched its first Rejuvenate!™ high-RNA superfood (original greens). You might call it a “chlorella-based” superfood since it’s about 40% chlorella. But it’s got a lot more than chlorella going for it. I’ll talk more about that later.

I had sample versions of Rejuvenate!™ superfood in 2006. I was taste-testing it and experimenting with various drink and smoothie recipes. One day, I ran out of my supply of chlorella just as I was planning to make a batch of chlorella lemonade. Having no chlorella available, I reached for the new Rejuvenate! formula as the best alternative I could find. To my surprise, it tasted just as good. Maybe better!!

Now I make Rejuvenate! Lemonade on a regular basis. I make it year-round, but I tend to drink more of it in the spring and summer months. It provides high-level hydration and quenches thirst supremely well.

Because Rejuvenate! is so rich in dietary nucleic acids (i.e., the richest source per unit weight among our three Rejuvenate! superfoods), I find it easier to reach my daily goals for RNA intake. That is, I aim for at least 340 mg of dietary RNA daily, but I prefer to consume 1,000–1,500 mg. Just three scoops of original Rejuvenate! puts me over 1,000 mg. I may drink two quarts of Rejuvenate! lemonade (each with 2–3 scoops of Rejuvenate!), so I can easily meet my optimal daily intake.

I drink Rejuvenate! Lemonade frequently. But about once or twice per year (usually in the warmer months), I will drink it exclusively for one to weeks. That is, I will flush (or fast) using Rejuvenate! Lemonade alone. I greatly enjoy my Rejuvenate! lemonade flushes!! In fact, I look forward to them. I will talk more about lemonade flushes or diets later.

The Rejuvenate! Lemonade recipe is delicious and amazingly nutritious. After you taste it, you may wish to consume it frequently!! As we say, it is delicious, satisfying, and detoxifying!

Basic Recipe for Rejuvenate! Lemonade. Mix Ingredients in a Quart Jar:

• 4–6 Tbsp Organic Lemon Juice (Fresh Squeezed Best)

• 3–6 Tbsp Organic Grade B Maple Syrup

• 1–2 scoops (2–4 Tbsps) of Rejuvenate! (Original). (I sometimes add a third scoop of Rejuvenate!™.)

• Pinch of Cayenne Pepper (Organic) (Fresh or Powder) (Optional)

• Ice Cubes (Optional) (great for warm days and for keeping Rejuvenate! Lemonade cold.)

Fill the jar with purified water. Add all ingredients, i.e., lemon juice, maple syrup (grade B), Rejuvenate!™ original, cayenne pepper (optional) and ice (optional). The order in which you add ingredients doesn’t matter so much, but fill the jar with water first to prevent Rejuvenate! from sticking to the jar. We then prefer to add the lemon juice and maple syrup before adding the Rejuvenate! because it helps make measuring easier. Shake or stir well. Enjoy!!

I typically use a one-quart mason jar. That way I can easily put the lid on the jar and shake to mix. But any quart-sized or greater jar or pitcher will work, as long as you shake or stir well. The ingredients go into suspension reasonably well, but there may be some settling. Consider re-stirring if it sits for a while. A straw or long spoon works nicely for this purpose.

Even kids love Rejuvenate! Lemonade. This means it’s a great way for them to get concentrated nutrition that supports good health, proper growth, and ensures intake of nutritious greens!!

Rejuvenate! Lemonade is satisfying & cooling on warm days in spring and summer.

Rejuvenate! Lemonade is great for use daily or whenever you feel like it. But for those interested in taking advantage of therapeutic benefits of Rejuvenate! Lemonade, here are a few things to consider. Rejuvenate! Lemonade is an excellent kidney cleanser, supports processes of detoxification, and can helpful for weight loss,

Over the years, our recipes and therapeutic uses of lemonade have been informed and inspired by Stanley Burroughs’ The Master Cleanser and similar proven resources. Regular lemonade (e.g., our recipe minus Rejuvenate!™) actually exerts potent healing properties well beyond hydration. It can be the basis for an effective kidney cleanse or flush, especially when used in combination with certain kidney herbs (e.g., tinctures and teas), superfoods, and a complete program of juicing. That will be the subject of a forthcoming article on the HPDI blog (so look for it!!).

In The Master Cleanser, Burroughs recommends consuming regular homemade lemonade for at least 10 days and up to 40 days. If you’re interested, you should definitely check out his work because there are many considerations to take into account when doing a lemonade diet. As noted, these are somewhat different from those I might suggest for a complete kidney cleanse. But they are worth contemplating if you’re going on a lemonade diet.

Adding Rejuvenate! to lemonade boosts its therapeutic value both for every day use (e.g., to optimize intake of dietary RNA) and for therapeutic purposes like kidney cleaning. That doesn’t mean a program for cleansing kidneys (or a Master Cleanser type lemonade diet) necessarily includes Rejuvenate! superfood in every glass of lemonade. However, Rejuvenate! strongly supports detoxification which is useful when cleansing and purifying the body.

rejuvenate! lemonade rejuvenate superfood original greens high-RNA dietary nucleic acids doctor hank liers hpdi

Just as with a regular lemonade diet, you can drink 2–4 quarts of Rejuvenate! Lemonade daily as a rejuvenating, cleansing diet for a period of 1–3 weeks. I usually do a “Rejuvenate! Lemonade Diet” twice yearly for about two weeks. I will drink 2–3 quarts daily depending on my level of hunger. That is about 8–12 glasses (8 ounce) per day. Beyond that I will mostly only consume water (as per Burroughs).

However, I will sometimes add an extra scoop of Rejuvenate! to my lemonade recipe. And occasionally I drink four quarts of Rejuvenate! Lemonade in one day. The keys are flexibility, listening to your body, doing what you feel comfortable with, and what feels right to you.

Note: We at HPDI recommend taking foundational supplements, including a multivitamin, essential fats, an antioxidant / Vitamin C formula (like Ultimate Protector), and Rejuvenate! superfoods. Generally speaking this recommendation holds during times of cleansing and fasting. Maintaining intake of foundational supplements helps ensure good nutritional status during a fast, cleanse, or Rejuvenate! lemonade “diet.”

Fresh-squeezed lemonade and “chlorella lemonade” provide significant levels of nutrients for good health. Rejuvenate! Lemonade provides even greater nutritional power.

That’s because Rejuvenate!™ high-RNA superfood was formulated by Dr. Hank Liers not only to provide therapeutic levels of dietary nucleic acids, but also to include nutrients supporting the metabolic pathways that allow the body to uptake, assimilate, and utilize dietary RNA.

Nutrients such as D-ribose, magnesium, folate, and vitamin B12 are all known to support the body’s use of dietary nucleic acids (i.e., RNA, DNA, nucleotides, and nucleosides). For example, D-ribose is actually the rate-limiting natural sugar (backbone) for the uptake of dietary RNA. That means if your body’s has a good supply of D-ribose, then it will use it to better assimilate dietary nucleic acids.

I include the Ingredients List and Nutrition Facts Table for Rejuvenate!™ superfood at the bottom of this article. You can also find these tables on the Rejuvenate!™ product page.

You’ll notice Rejuvenate! superfood also provides other nutrients like spirulina (blue-green algae), natural seaweeds (good source of natural iodine and other minerals), rice bran solubles (source of antioxidants like tocotrienols), and chia seeds (source of essential fats, fiber, and other nutrients).

Beyond chlorella, Rejuvenate! superfood includes other high-density sources of dietary nucleic acids like Chlorella Growth Factor (CGF) (nucleic-acid rich extract from chlorella), nutritional yeast, and yeast RNA. All this adds up to a potent nucleic acid profile (i.e., better balanced than straight chlorella) and an overall nutritional content that supports optimal uptake and assimilation of dietary nucleic acids.

For individuals concerned about blood sugar issues, you can simply use less maple syrup. That is, start with maybe 1–3 Tbsp of maple syrup and adjust accordingly depending on blood glucose or glycemic symptoms. In fact, one of the reasons we recommend grade B maple syrup is because it is contains more minerals than grade A maple syrup.

Grade B maple syrup not only is visibly darker and richer than grade A, but also due to its higher nutrient content produces fewer glycemic effects. This is especially true when it’s combined with Rejuvenate!™ superfood, which includes fiber from chia seeds, rice bran solubles, etc.

Another option for improving glycemic effects is to replace maple syrup with organic blackstrap molasses. Molasses works extremely well in Rejuvenate! Lemonade. The taste is different and distinct, but typically it grows on you. For individuals who are sugar-sensitive, hypoglycemic, or tend toward low blood sugar, using molasses may be the best way to enjoy this recipe.

The maple syrup in this recipe also allows you to control calorie intake. Typically, lemonade diets are reducing diets. That is, they cleanse the body, give it a break from digesting solid foods, and support weight loss. Yet, by adjusting the amount of maple syrup in the recipe, you can encourage weight loss, maintain weight, or actually increase body weight.

Most people are not seeking to gain weight, but it’s something of which to be aware when using Rejuvenate! Lemonade for cleansing purposes. That is, don’t overdo maple syrup if you wish either to lose or just maintain weight.

Finally, we always recommend using fresh-squeezed lemons (or limes) to make Rejuvenate! Lemonade. I own a medium-size “Orange-X” citrus press, which is highly effective at making fast work of juicing lemons and limes (or other citrus fruits). I use it most during my semi-annual Rejuvenate! Lemonade flushes. Or when there’s company or I’m making larger quantities to share with friends.

For smaller amounts of lemon juice, a small hand juicer (ceramic, glass, or steel) works nicely. Or simply hand-squeeze lemons half-cut or wedged directly into your jar, glass, or pitcher.

If you are traveling or otherwise unable to squeeze fresh citrus for the recipe, then you can use an organic 100% lemon or lime juice, such as Santa Cruz brand lemon juice available in glass bottles. It won’t taste as fresh, and nutrients like enzymes and vitamins will be missing or lowered. But it is viable alternative when you have no other choice.

Rejuvenate! Lemonade is excellent for kidney cleansing, weight loss, hydration, increased energy, mental clarity, and more. Rejuvenate! superfood provides high levels of dietary RNA and nutrient dense foods.

The winning combination of dietary nucleic acids and supporting nutrients results in a superb Rejuvenate! Lemonade providing exceptional nutritional potency. This nutritional power supports a broad range of health benefits.

The Summer Lemonade Diet: Refreshes, Hydrates & Cleanses Kidneys

Fred Liers PhD summer lemonade diet integratedhealth rejuvenate superfoodsEvery summer I do at least a couple weeks of the “Lemonade Diet.” It is an excellent cleanse for the kidneys and a welcome break for the digestive system. Plus, it tastes great and really satisfies thirst on hot summer days.

Summer is an ideal time for the Lemonade Diet because of increased needs for hydration. Also, by late summer I personally have finished my spring and summer juice fasts, including a long liver flush. So, I’m ready for kidney cleansing.

The Lemonade Diet is essentially consuming fresh lemon (or lime) juice in pure water with a splash of maple syrup (optional) and maybe a pinch of cayenne. Simply squeeze the juice from two fresh organic lemons (or limes). Mix the lemon juice with one tablespoon (or more) of organic grade-B maple syrup, and add chile pepper powder (optional).

Yummmm! Lemonade! summer lemonade diet

Yummmm! Lemonade!

2 medium lemons (or limes) (juiced)
Grade B Maple syrup (1–2 Tbsp) (optional)
Cayenne pepper (optional)
Pure filtered water (32 oz)

Place all ingredients in a large glass or mason jar. Stir or shake well until mixed. Alternatively, you can place all ingredients in a blender and mix. This works better if you’re using fresh chile peppers that require blending.

Adjust the recipe and ingredient ratios according to your taste. For example, I prefer using less maple syrup, but using up to one tablespoon per drink will encourage some weight loss. Whenever you get hungry, just drink more lemonade. There is no limit, but lemonade amazingly satisfies hunger.

The Lemonade Diet can be part of an overall kidney cleansing program when combined with kidney herbs (teas and tinctures), and especially with a vegetable juice flush or raw foods diet. If you’re going for a full kidney cleanse, then look for kidney teas, tinctures, and herbal formulas containing herbs like juniper berries, corn silk, uva ursi root, and parsley root. These herbs are powerful kidney cleansers.

If I do a kidney cleanse (whether for one day or one week), I usually drink two cups of hot herbal tea for kidneys 15 minutes after I drink my first lemonade drink for the day. I usually add two to four dropperfulls of a kidney tincture to this tea, or take the tincture separately in a little water. I will drink two to four more cups of kidney tea during the day along with additional tincture (two droppers per cup).

If you plan to drink vegetable juice while on the Lemonade Diet (i.e., do a juice flush or a full kidney cleanse), then start your morning with a lemonade drink and 15 minutes later with kidney tea, and hold off on drinking juice (with or without superfoods) for at least 20 minutes. That is, drink juice or superfoods a little later in the morning and at least 15–20 minutes away from any additional kidney teas or tinctures. This gives the body a better opportunity to cleanse the kidneys.

For lovers of hot chile peppers, you can add cayenne powder of any heat level (start 30,000 Scoville heat units (SHU) and gradually work your way up to higher heat levels). I typically use a habanero-pepper–based cayenne blend that rates at 250,000 SHU. As I mentioned, you can use fresh hot peppers by placing all ingredients into a blender.

Hot pepper is ideal for use on hot summer days because it boosts your circulation, thereby cooling you down. This is one reason hot peppers are consumed widely in tropical and equatorial regions of the world. Peppers are native to the Americas, but it did not take long for their use and cultivation to spread.

I also love to use hot chile peppers in vegetable juices. One of my favorite vegetable juices is “The Doctor” which can include the hottest peppers your palette can handle.

It’s not difficult to thrive on the Lemonade Diet for two or even three weeks. I frequently add superfoods like Rejuvenate!™ and chlorella into my lemonade. These “green” drinks leave me feeling a bit more nourished and provide all the benefits associated with therapeutic levels of RNA and chlorophyll. For example, I’m warmer, more energized, and I can go longer before my next glass of lemonade. (In fact, one of my favorite versions of the lemonade diet is the “Rejuvenate! Lemonade” diet.)

With the addition of Rejuvenate!™ (especially the original greens version) and other superfoods, I can probably go one month or longer on the Lemonade Diet. But this year after I finish a few weeks on the diet, I think I will reserve one day each week to consume lemonade with superfoods (i.e., have a once-per-week lemonade day). This practice will bring me into the fall season with super cleansed kidneys. Then, I’ll be ready to start my fall liver flush!
