Last month Fred wrote a blog article focusing on the scientific contributions of pioneer RNA researcher Dr. Benjamin S. Frank titled “Dietary Nucleic Acids – Dr. Benjamin S. Frank, Part 1.”
This month we present intriguing, practical ideas regarding the remarkable effects of dietary nucleic acids (RNA, DNA) – provided by high-RNA foods and superfoods like Rejuvenate!™ – for improved athletic performance and physiological function of the body.
Dietary nucleic acids significantly boost many human physiological functions. The effects and benefits of dietary RNA have been studied and documented for more than 40 years. Yet, for a variety of reasons, these effects and benefits have not been widely understood, utilized, or applied by sports medicine (and medicine more generally) and athletes, nutritionists, or the general public.
HPDI’s research into the beneficial physiological effects of dietary RNA led us to study the therapeutic benefits of chlorella. This ultimately led to Hank’s formulating Rejuvenate!™ superfoods in order to harness the nutritional benefits of dietary nucleic acids for health and healing.
Many of the benefits of dietary RNA in terms of increasing health and therapeutically for healing also apply for purposes of improving athletic performance. In addition to dietary RNA and DNA, Dr. Frank found that optimal results were achieved when his patients took a multivitamin and/or a B-complex supplement, minerals, proteins, and essential fatty acids. PHYSICAL PERFORMANCE: RESULTS OBSERVED BY DR. FRANK
Among his findings pertaining to improved physical performance, Dr. Frank reports these specific results:
1) Dr. Frank had seven healthy individuals climb flights of stairs both before and after RNA therapy. Whereas fatigue began by rapidly climbing 3 sets of stairs before RNA therapy, after 10 full doses (over a period of 1–2 weeks) of his RNA formula the same group was able to rapidly climb 6–10 flights of stairs before fatiguing.
2) Four males, aged 34–40, who were in very good condition were able to increase their ability to lift weights over their heads by 10–20 pounds after taking his RNA formula for a short time (about 2–3 weeks).
3) Mice were placed in sealed jars to determine whether RNA would affect the length of their survival. Dr. Frank found that RNA-fed experimental animals survived 48 percent longer than those on the control diet. In another experiment, he placed control and RNA-fed rats in a water tank to evaluate their swimming endurance. The RNA-fed rats averaged 15.6 minutes before exhaustion versus 11.3 minutes for the control group.
Amazingly, Dr. Frank discovered that anti-anoxic effect and all the other effects of RNA were long lasting. He found that these effects persisted for weeks after cessation of nucleic acid therapy. Dr. Frank’s experiments support the application of high-RNA therapy for enhancing sports performance in athletes.

DIETARY RNA ENHANCES ATP PRODUCTION FOR HIGH ENERGY LEVELS
In his books (e.g., Dr. Frank’s No-Aging Diet and Nucleic Acid Nutrition & Therapy), Dr. Frank addresses how dietary RNA dramatically increases cellular energy. RNA boosts energy levels in the body by significantly increasing production of the “high-energy” molecule ATP (adenosine triphosphate). Humans, and especially athletes, require energy from ATP for many purposes, including physical exertion, endurance, recovery, cellular repair, metabolism, muscle growth, etc.
DIETARY RNA: ESSENTIAL NUTRIENT FOR LIFE
In Nucleic Acid Nutrition and Therapy (1977), Dr. Frank notably asserts that nucleic acids (RNA/DNA) are “essential nutrients of human beings” as distinct from non-essential, accessory nutrients. He considered nucleic acids and nucleotides an essential dietary category, i.e., as being nutrients just as essential for humans as vitamins, minerals, proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids.
Dr. Frank acknowledged the body’s capacity to synthesize some nucleic acids, yet cited the marked improvements in degenerative conditions as the clearest evidence for nucleic acids as essential nutrients. In particular, he noted the health effects resulting from even relatively small (as little as 75 mg) intakes of nucleic acids (e.g., energizing effects, anti-anoxia/oxygen sparing effects, rejuvenation, greater vitality, etc.).
Dr. Frank found he could not obtain such improvements in his subjects by increasing only the intake of vitamins, minerals, proteins, or other essential nutrients. He declares: “Nucleic acids are an essential nutrient in our daily diets, and…optimal health and reduced aging are clearly related to their intake, more than to any other nutrient. Nucleic acids in our diets are of paramount importance for the repairing of molecular and gross tissue degeneration, and for combating the process of aging by simple, effective and essentially non-toxic, natural means.”
CHLORELLA: CONCENTRATED SOURCE OF NUCLEIC ACIDS
Following Dr. Frank’s research studies, Dr. Bernard Jensen helped thousands of his patients recover their health using nucleic acid therapy. In particular, Dr. Jensen dramatically raised awareness of the healing powers of nucleic acids through his publications, including Chlorella: Gem of the Orient (1987). Due to his efforts, chlorella, a high-RNA (5–15%) fresh water algae, is now readily available to consumers and is an ingredient in many superfoods.
In his book Chlorella: Jewel of the Far East (1992), Dr. Jensen simply states: “When we have a sufficient intake of foods rich in DNA and RNA to protect our own cellular nucleic acids, the cell wall continues to function efficiently, keeping the cell clean and well nourished….when our RNA and DNA are in good repair and able to function most efficiently, our bodies are able to use nutrients more effectively, get rid of toxins and avoid disease….cells are able to repair themselves, and the energy level and vitality of the whole body is raised.”
While chlorella is a concentrated source of dietary nucleic acids, we at HPDI believe it’s preferable to consume nucleic acids from a variety of sources. This is because various high-RNA foods and superfoods have unique nucleic acid profiles. Balance is key. In addition, there are other nutrients (e.g., d-ribose and certain B vitamins) that optimize the body’s uptake and utilization of dietary nucleic acids. These are just a few reasons HPDI developed the Rejuvenate!™ line of superfoods.
SOURCES OF RNA & DNA IN REJUVENATE!™ SUPERFOODS
While Dr. Frank’s sources of RNA were primarily fish, there are now a variety of vegetarian sources of RNA/DNA available, including the fresh water algae chlorella and spirulina, nutritional yeast, chlorella growth factor (CGF), and yeast extracts of RNA/DNA. Rejuvenate!™ superfoods incorporate these sources to provide a minimum of 340 mg of RNA per serving.

Dr. Frank recommends consuming additional nutrients needed by the body for nucleic acids to be optimally effective. These nutrients include proteins, vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids. SUGGESTED AMOUNTS OF REJUVENATE!™ SUPERFOODS
One serving of Rejuvenate!™ (original) superfood provides about 340 mg of dietary nucleic acids. Serving sizes vary somewhat with Rejuvenate!™ original providing the most per unit weight and more servings per container. Rejuvenate!™ PLUS and Berries & Herbs provide similar levels of dietary RNA with somewhat larger serving sizes, yet these include higher levels of protein, built-in coenzyme vitamin complexes, and other nutrients like herbs.
Rejuvenate!™ Berries & Herbs actually provides the most dietary RNA per serving at 390 mg. This despite the fact that it’s the only Rejuvenate!™ superfood that does not contain any greens (i.e., chlorella or spirulina).
Results have been gained with as little as one serving per day, i.e., just 340 milligrams of dietary RNA. Dr. Frank notes that an upper limit for most individuals is about 1,500 mg daily. That is, benefits level out beyond this point for most people. However, it has been suggested that for athletes and individuals engaging in extremely demanding activities (e.g., Olympic-level training or extreme sports) benefits can be gained at levels up to 3,000 mg of RNA daily.
REJUVENATE!™ SUPERFOODS ARE FOUNDATIONAL SUPPLEMENTS
For best results, HPDI recommends that individuals take four types of foundational supplements, including Rejuvenate!™ superfoods.
